A lady bug is small enough to sit on a leaf, but a giraffe is not. BUT! It is big enough to reach the leaves on treetops to eat. While one animal might be perfectly small enough for one task, a contrasting animal is not, but it is big enough to do a task that is important to them.
Just the Right Size is about being just the right size for tasks that are important to the animals, but one of the greatest things about this book is the sentence repetition. The sentences follow the same "this animal is small enough to do this. But this animal isn't! It's big enough to do this!" all the way through the book until it concludes with the child being also being the perfect size.
Ana had her own version of this kind of book. The book was entirely built of sentence repetition and she requested I read it so much, it actually fell apart. I read that damn book so much that 4 years later, I can read it to you. FROM MEMORY. IN THE SAME DAMN VOICE. [And yes, of course I still have the pieces packed away in my memento box like a loon.]
But these kinds of books are so, so, so important!
Books with sentence repetition teach vital grammatical forms, event sequencing, the skill to predict what comes next, and the reenforcement of the overall idea in the book.
Cute book that involves comparing sizes that are big and small. Ends with a positive message of being the right size for a hug. Which I thought was a cute way to end the story.

This adorable story celebrates the unique abilities of big and small animals of the wild. Some animals are gigantic, while others are tiny, but they each have a strength.
This story is great for teaching your little ones the difference between big and small. It can also be used for teaching kids that like people, animals come in different shapes and sizes, too.
This adorable book explores the concepts of BIG and small in a kid-friendly and understandable way. The simple text contrasts a variety of opposite-sized animals perfectly.
"Did you know...
that a ladybug is small enough
to land on the branch of a tree?
A giraffe is not.
But a giraffe is BIG enough
to reach a treetop without
stretching its neck."
The book teaches that size should not be an issue. No matter what your stature you are just right the way you are. The illustrations are expressive and sweet making the book a wonderful bedtime story. The last page sums it up spot on:
"DID YOU KNOW...
that no matter how small or how BIG,
you're always just the right size...
for a hug!
"I KNOW!"
Celebrate your size and who you are. There is no one else like you... you are amazing! BIG or small you are a winner!
The illustrations are adorable. The text is simple and contrasts the opposites nicely. The repetition of big and small is perfect for early readers. With the engaging artwork, and the sweet ending, this would be perfect for families at storytime.
The cover of this book grabbed my attention right away, and I found the rest of the illustrations to be equally adorable. I especially enjoyed the way the illustrator captured the animals' expressions. The author used such a clever way of presenting the advantages of being big or small. Everyone is created just the right size. Unfortunately, the words didn't flow properly in the electronic version of my ARC due to formatting issues. I look forward to reading the print edition with full-size illustrations to my three-year old granddaughter. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a sneak peek.
Personally loved this book. The pictures of the animals are so cute. I read this book to my nephew and he really enjoyed it. Usually he struggles to sit still when read together but he was really engaged with this book. He managed to sit to the end. We read it 3 times before I had to say “that’s enough for today”. He was really happy that he could recognise most of the animals.
The book is great for teaching little ones about the concept of big and small. It also teaches them that it doesn’t matter if things are different. Definitely will be recommending to me friends who work with little ones.
Thank you NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for an advance digital review copy in return for an unbiased review.
Such a cute, lovely and educative little book.
I read this book to my daughter. She is a lively little monster, jumping and running around all the time, God bless her. But she actually sat all through my reading and loved the adorable illustrations.
The cover says it all!
No matter who you are or what you are, you are the right size. Don’t try to change to fit in. You are who you are. Each and every one of us has a place in this world and possess unique abilities, however insignificant, to help the ones who need our love and support.
Thanks to Bonnie Grubman, Clavis Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a copy.
This is a cute book with sweet illustrations. A great book to read to young children about size. There are comparisons of large and small showing that everyone/everything can do different things because of their size. Not everyone can do the same thing in life, but that is okay. Just the Right Size reminds us that everyone is different, and it's alright! When I read this to my grandson, we talked about things he could do that I couldn't and things I can do that he can't. He understands that he will grow up and be able to do the same things as daddy and mommy and when he gets older, like grandmama. He liked the pictures and talked about them as we read this story. A nice book for classrooms, especially kindergarten, family libraries and public libraries. The publisher, Clavis Publishing, generously provided me with a copy of this book to read.
This is a great little book but the illustrations really put it over the top. I didn't have a chance to read it to my grandson, but I know he would have liked it because it has pictures of animals that he can recognize and at 3 he understands big and small. I will definitely buy the hardcopy for him.
Read this book for my son as a bedtime story. We both enjoyed this book. My son likes the illustrations of all the small animals and I like the comparison between small and big. A cover shows the mom elephant can shelter the baby elephant from the rain and the baby elephant can shelter a baby bunny from the rain. Can you spot the baby bunny on the cover? (Answer is no because the bunny is not on the cover haha.. but it is in the story). A cute & quick read. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read in an exchange for an honest review.
Clear comparisons of creatures big and small. The illustrations are gorgious. This little big book oozes cuteness. Lovely!
The book is cute and adorable, the illustration is spot on and very suitable for kids 3 years old and above.
Thanks netgalley for providing the arc
JUST THE RIGHT SIZE teaches its young readers that no matter how big or small you are that you are enough. A very sweet story with adorable pictures.
The kindle book is cute, but it has a few formating issues. The gold fish and dolphin comparison overlapped, the beaver and ant overlapped as well. I think its a good book for 4 to 8 years old.
JUST THE RIGHT SIZE teaches kids about the concept of big and small ... and that no matter your size, you’re just right. With darling illustrations by Suzanne Diederen. For readers ages 3 and up.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.

Just the Right Size is a picture book focusing on whether we're big or small, we're perfectly suited to specific tasks. The book portrays animals of all sizes; for instance, a ladybug is small enough to perch on a leaf. A giraffe is too big for that, but the giraffe can reach the leaves because of its long neck.
I first read this with my four-year-old daughter, and she was amused. As she sometimes struggles with feelings of frustration when she's not allowed to do as much as her big sister or stay up as late as her parents, this was a good reminder to her that there are things she can do better because of her small stature. Without prompting, at the close of the book she said she was small enough to crawl under a desk chair during hide-and-seek, but the rest of us would be too big to do the same.
This book offers a way to discuss frankly what we love being able to do because we are the size we are, and it has the potential to help a small child (like mine) pause and reflect on their abilities instead of wishing they were bigger and older.
I received a digital ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This book teaches you size does not matter. It’s a great kids book, mainly for younger kids. I loved the ending of the book and the lesson. My daughter loved it as well.
I received a copy of the book through netgalley, and found it to be an interesting book for children, loved the use of illustrations to emphasise the use of opposites, with the word enough, still keeping it interesting enough to continue reading it,also teaches children about various animals that can lead to project work in the classroom, animals, opposites, habitat, endanged animals etv.
A must for a class or school library not to mention the home.
Super cute book about every size being special for different reasons. Sometimes being bigger allows you to do things you couldn’t do if you were smaller and vice versa. Beautiful pictures and would be a great read-aloud for the little one in your life.
