I liked this story. Emi was a likeable person and I connected with her immediately. I understood perfectly where she was coming from when it came to Jack. Her fears were very relatable. I liked her chemistry with her brother Evan and his fiancée Hannah, although that didn’t feel as forced as what it’s made out to be. The chemistry between Emi and Jack was also questionable but I felt for them more the more I learnt about the important moments in their past relationship.
One character I wasn’t so keen on was Lily. She was extremely judgemental when it came to things Emi done, like the wine scenario at the airport. That was a little OTT and after that she just didn’t sit right with me.
I liked Jack and felt sort of sorry for him. Emi didn’y really even give him the time to try and explain, just leaving without any contact. The twist involving Jack was a little expected but it was still quite shocking. I didn’t really like the character to begin with, and then we learn why Emi didn’t like her either.
I love the fact that we got backstory from Emi and Jack’s relationship. Those moments were what made me root for them even more. They were a sweet couple, and as a character said, their romance was very much a Hollywood romance.
The writing style really flowed well, with hilarious moments involved, including drunken moments. Honestly, I didn’t get the lucky dress thing. I didn’t see any evidence of this so I’m a bit sceptical about it. I don’t think it really made the story or anything. It felt like a very convenient storyline to flow with.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and liked the characters. I’ve given this book 4/5.
I wanted to like this a lot. I was looking for a quick, romantic read and was thrilled when Netgalley and Aria provided me with an advanced copy in return for an honest review. What I ended up reading was something that was "fine" ... it simply didn't jump off the page as one of my favourite loves stories to date.
Meet Emi, twin sister of Evan who is getting married to Hannah - the girl who was almost her sister-in-law because Emi was engaged to Jack, Hannah's brother. But that was before Emi walked in on Jack with a half-naked woman on his lap; and before she ran away to the other side of the country to get away from him and their past.
Since Emi is forced to attend her brother's wedding, she knows she's going to see Jack again and have to deal with what happened all those months ago.
Sounds like the makings of a romantic comedy - because obviously we need to throw in misunderstandings, other romantic possibilities and a little bit of drama. However, in this case the story fell a little flat for my liking.
I think it's because I wasn't a super huge fan of Emi's. She was nice and sweet, but she seemed super naive, and childish in the way she dealt with Jack. Also there was way to much of a focus on her having gained 30 pounds between their break-up and the wedding. Honestly ... the focus on her physical appearance, and her lack of self-esteem, got a little tiresome.
I did like that the story jumped from present to past - so every other chapter gave us a glimpse into their relationship - moving from the day she "caught him cheating" to their very first date. Those chapters were great. It was how she was acting present day that seemed to annoy me a bit.
I wish I'd liked it more. Aimee Brown ends the book with a letter to her readers announcing her follow-up novel, involving one of the characters from this story. I'd totally give that one a chance. So although this book was an OK read, I think Aimee Brown is worth giving another chance to.
2.5 star read.
I'm really pleased I was able to get a copy of The Lucky Dress from the author. It's such a lovely story with everything you could want in an exciting romance - a girl and a boy, their build up of romance, a complication or two that gets in the way to test their relationship then finally love reunited.
I adored the various timeline flashbacks of Emi's and Jack's relationship, it was a great build up of the characters which worked extremely well with the present story. Each flashback told it's own little chain of events within the last 5 years before bringing us back to the present wedding day. You understood each emotion from the characters because of this unique structure in each thread of timeline that was told from when Emi caught Jack in his office with his receptionist, right up until the day they met.
What I really enjoyed about this romance is that usually when someone cheats, the author will allow the reader, as well as most characters, to hate that person in question, the protagonist will still have feelings for them but will gradually discover that someone better is out there. Not this time. Aimee Brown made the reader fall in love with Jack even though it appeared that he had done Emi wrong which was absolutely delightful. The concept of 'love is worth fighting for' is portrayed perfectly in this fantastic novel.
The characters were brilliant. Emi's friendship with Lily is just want you want in a best friend, someone who isn't afraid to tell you that you look a mess, who can read you like a book and will answer the phone mid conversation because you don't waste time with silly small talk.
'I'm not sure what happened; one minute I'm sobbing and rambling to Lily about Jack, and the next I hear a door shutting and Lily is walking in with a pizza, her husband Josh behind her carrying two bottles of wine.
"What's going on?" I ask.
"Um, you stopped making sense about five minutes into your story so I may or may not have slipped you a Xanax." Lily attempts a guilty smile. "After that, you cried yourself to sleep, and I have been declining Jack's calls all afternoon."
Emi is true and completely relatable with her wrapped up complicated emotions for the love of her life who hurt her. At times she appears weak with her feelings being so mixed up, but she did ignore Jack for a whole year whilst creating a new life for herself which couldn't have been easy. Her decisions are completely understandable with wanting to run away, to standing up for herself when it counts.
Jack is a mix of charm and disappointment but wrapped up in a lovely little romantic bow. He's a really interesting character that I'm sure many, like me, expected to hate. Who would forgive someone who was caught with their receptionist days before their wedding? When the truth unfolds to how Jack ended up in that uncompromising position, we rally for Jack all over again. His flashbacks in romancing Emi are enough to make us forgive and forget.
'I swear it was just twenty minutes ago I was standing here staring at the ocean, and now there is a full dinner and waiter in our room.
"This is Elliott, he's our chef and waiter for the evening." Jack pulls my chair out for me like the gentleman he is.
"You hired a private chef?"
"I did." He grabs the wine bottle and pours us each a glass of wine, pink in colour. "I also instructed him to bring dessert first, because I know how you love eating cake for dinner." He laughs as he sets the wine back in the bucket.'
One of my favourite characters was Jack's mother, Amelia. She's a strong willed, dominant socialite with influential power who knows how to throw a party. She's also taken Emi under her wing to make sure she had the support she needed when her mother died. Amelia loves Emi like family which creates a powerful connection between the two of them that isn't easy discarded, even when Emi runs away from her son, Amelia welcomes her back with open arms straight away. She is scary, intimidating and just brilliant when she wants things done her way - particularly with Greta. She's still human and she makes mistakes but she more than makes up for them.
'"Yes, yes, it was a part of the so called plan," she uses air quotes around the word plan with a roll of her eyes. "But you got anxious and disappeared before I could work out phase two."
"You were playing me?"
"Well, not in a cynical kind of way like you're making it sound, but sometimes you have to create a situation so that the right outcome will prevail. Especially, when your two players are so stubborn that they'll never figure it out on their own."
Overall a fantastic romance that I guarantee you'll read in one sitting because you won't want to put it down.
An ex, a wedding and snarky, mean girl provide the perfect ingredients for a summer rom-com.
Faced with the ultimate dilemma, Emi has to attend her brother's wedding, no question, but he's marrying her ex's sister. The ex in question cheated on Emi, and so the romantic and often humorous story begins.
The story tells Emi and Jack's story through a series of flashbacks, which introduce the secondary characters and give insight into Emi and Jack's emotions, throughout their love story and at the break-up.
There are the requisite wedding disasters, and a cast of characters, which add depth to the story, which is unashamedly romantic and a lovely summer read.
I received a copy of this book from Aria via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Emi’s best friend was Lily. Lily always had Emi’s back but also also told her the truth even if it was something Emi didn’t want to hear- she was a straight shooter. Emi was to be in Hannah’s wedding, she was trying on her dress for the wedding and had to put a tight corset on as she had gained some weight recently. Emi could hardly breath. Emi is the girl who would fall in the middle of the sidewalk wearing no heals . Emi owns a coffee shop called The Coffee Bean. Emi loves everything she served. Who doesn’t drink a lot of Lattes a day when they open their own business, move two thousand miles away from the life you thought you would never leave is stressful and two days before you are to marry you found you fiance with his naked assistant a top of him. Hannah is marrying Emi’s twin brother Evan and her brother is Emi’s ex fiance. Emi had managed not to see him since that day but now she will have to face him. Not one day goes by that Emi doesn’t relive everything that happened. Emi is even going to this wedding to support Evan and Hannah. Also to prove to herself Jack is exactly the guy she witnessed the day he broke up with him. But there is a part way down deep that wants to know for sure she is over Jack and he her. Then Emi got an email from Jack saying he had to talk to her and it had been different from the ones she had gotten before from him. If eEi had a she she would rather not face Jack at all. Emi meets a cute bartender -Liam- and invites him to be her date at the wedding. Even a year later Emi is not over jJck or he her but he is now engaged to a pregnant Greta who had always felt Emi was not good enough for Jack.
I enjoyed reading this book. A fun summer emotional romance. I was glad Emi had Liam with her when she seen Jack and heard he was engaged and to who. I did feel bad for Emi and Jack and the people who came and tried to come between them. I enjoyed the plot of this book. This made me chuckle at times and other choked me up. I felt bad for Emi when she walked in on Jack and his assistant even when everyone told her that didn’t sound like Jack and when she finally goes to Jack’s apartment to see what he has to say she sees him let Greta into his apartment and just walks back away. Would any explanation be ok with Jack having his naked assistant over him and her hands through his hair. Two days before he was to marry Emi? I loved Emi friendship with Lily. The author did a very good job on a debut book. I felt there was a bit too much drama in this book. This also ragged for me at times. I really liked the author’s way of writing.I loved the ending. I usually don’t like going back and forth between past and present but for some reason it didn’t bother me in this book that much. I loved the twists and turns in this book and the characters and I recommend.
I received a copy from NetGalley of The Lucky Dress for an honest review.
Overall, a cute story. I liked the wit, the characters and the tension/conflict/resolution aspects a lot. My least favorite aspects were the lengthy flashbacks. While, they had some meaning in the story, I didn't think it was necessary to reintroduce a lot of the flat characters and reaquaint us with them during the flashbacks. I would have delved more into the scene/action that mattered for the story arc. I liked how Aimee revealed Jack's intentions, truths, and motivations throughout the story as it progressed; that was my favorite aspect.
This was such a fun little book! I enjoyed the story, and how it flips back and forth from present day to the past. There are good secondary characters as well who kept the story going and offered good banter. ****Spoiler**** I don’t know if there is any plan for a series, but I would love to know what happens to Liam! Really enjoyed and would recommend.
After reading quite a few psychological thrillers, I was looking forward to a nice, light read. I got to the second chapter of this book, and everything started to sound very familiar. By the third chapter, I was convinced I had either a) read this book before or b) read one that was VERY similar. The truth is actually both. This book was previously released as “Little Gray Dress,” which is what I originally read. I did speed through this book to see if there was anything that jumped out at me as a major change and didn’t find too many major points of change. The story is quick moving, the characters don’t have a lot of depth, but aren’t superficial; in fact they’re all likeable (or, in the case of the villain, unlikeable) in a “real” way. I think the major change is that when I read this book originally, it was marketed differently; there was a focus on Emi meeting a bartender. In this re-write/re-issue, that isn’t the focus; this is a change for the better, because it isn’t a major plot motivator as originally marketed. This is a fun book with an HEA, perfect for summer! Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC (even though I’d already read it) in exchange for an honest review.
"The Lucky Dress" is an adorable romantic story. I enjoyed the flashbacks on different moments from the love affair between Emi and Jack. You really understand the tension and stress building up to their seeing each other for the first time since their break up a year prior at the wedding of Emi's brother to Jack's sister. There were a few unique twists and turns. Emi taking Liam to the wedding and Jack showing up with Greta, who was part of the initial breakup. I didn't know who I wanted to end up together. I thought the pregnancy scenario at the end was a bit odd, but other than that, it was an very romantic tale that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I would like to thank NetGallery, the publisher and Aimee Brown for the opportunity to read "The Lucky Dress......I appreciate being able to give my honest and true review of this wonderful book.
I have to say this book was so refreshing to read, I needed a break from the thrillers I have been reading and "The Lucky Dress" certainly was just that. I laughed out loud more then once, the humorous aspect was enjoyable.
Was the book predictable? In a way it was and in many ways it wasn't. I know I kept thinking about the book when I wasn't able to read it.....wondering what was going to happen. I don't have this happen to me very often so that in itself tells you I enjoyed this book immensely.
The two main characters are Emi and Jack......along with Lily, Emi"s best friend. And, of course, the crazy lady in the book, Greta. There is also Liam, the helpful bar owner that comes to Emi's rescue.
If you are looking for a light, romantic beach read, this book is perfect.
I hope to be reading more from Aimee Brown in the future!
*Looking forward to a sequel to "The Lucky Dress" to include more about Liam.....
This book is not so good. The flashbacks each chapter are just not so good, just tell me the story. These flashbacks could be condensed into a few paragraphs in the book. Emi is an awful leading lady in this book, she is so needy, whiny and constantly counting on others for her happiness or even mental stability to deal with her ex. She ran away from Jack without ever talking to him, not like he deserved it but maybe if she would have picked up t he phone after she ran away and got some closure she would be less bitchy. Then she never tells anyone what happen she bottles it all up and runs away and then everyone is walking on eggshells when she comes back to her brothers wedding. Then the lying to the family and it just builds and builds. It is awkward and hard to read. This book goes on and on and on and it just gets more awkward and harder to read.
Thank you to Aria publications for the opportunity to read and review this book. I totaĺly recommend the Lucky Dress to anyone who is after a funny, light hearted, romantic read. I fell I love with the main character, Emi quite quickly and wanted her to have her happy ever after. Just as in the sitcoms , true love doesn't run smoothly and Emi and Jack must over come many hurdles.
The book engaged me from the beginning and made a nice read till the end. The ending was especially lovely. One for the romantics
I loved it! I love second chance romance books but I especially love ones with laugh out loud situations. This story is very cute.
Of course you want that perfect dress when faced next to your ex.
Aimee Brown is new to me, but I like her style of writing. Nice easy beach read or lazy Sunday!
The Lucky Dress is well written has a good plot and great cast of characters. The author is new to me and I enjoyed her writing. I highly recommend this books. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
I love stories where the heroine has to face the awkward situation of dealing with an ex fiancé after two years of a bad breakup (cheating). It’s entertaining, funny and emotional. Perfect for summer.
A reasonable summertime read. Aimee Brown has gone for a fairly predictable romance story which is an easy read. The only problems are the parts which are a bit far-fetched - when her boyfriend is supposedly caught in a situation which isn't quite believable and the part where his mother gets another girl to falsely say she is pregnant in order for him to win the main character back. This really doesn't read right.
I've actually read and reviewed this book before - except Aimee got a new publisher and rewrote the book and so it's not technically the same book at all. I never read books twice - I mean why would you when there are so many books to read. However, something about the previous version of the book "The Little Gray Dress" hooked me so much that I just had to see how Aimee changed it.
Now don't get me wrong - I loved it the first time, but this time around as The Lucky Dress it is even better. Emi and Jack have only been apart a year instead of two this time around and although the "lovely"! (not) piece of work that is Greta is still hanging onto Jack's arm as his new girlfriend, this time around I felt more confident that she could be thrown off - but I will leave you to read and find out if that gets to happen.
The star of the book has to be Jack's Mother Amelia - do Mother-in-laws like this actually exist? - I wish this one did, what a true lady. I found myself waiting with glee for her lines.
I found it interesting to see how Aimee switched around some of the story a little but if it is the first time reading for you - you are in for a real treat. Such a good story with a romantic but down to earth feel - so glad I read it twice!
Five out of five stars to Aimee not only for a fab read but also the tenacity to rewrite - I'm not sure I would have had the tenacity - I hated rewriting and editing essays only a few thousands words long.
My thanks to Netgalley and Aria Publishing for an ARC of the book for review.
Also - Emi's friend Liam is going to get his own story due out next year! Can't wait.
I floved this book so hard! Total swoonage over here. It’s 2 a.m. and I should be sleeping, but I just had to finish it!! Ems and Jack are everything. This is one of my favorite books this year, maybe even ever.. A perfect ending for such a wonderful and well written story. If you love this genre of romance, you’ll love this book too. Read it!
What the hell was lucky about this. I couldn't read anymore, it was ridiculous that it would take so long for them to get a resolution. What? So they are in love, thru a misunderstanding (supposedly) they break up she moves, and what they don't have phones? airlines? is there no way that Jack who supposedly was heartbroken couldn't get to her and tell her the truth? Yeah that killed it for me, he should have manned up and then we have him getting together with this mean girl that I know he had to have known Emi wasn't crazy about. All these people sucked and I dont care what they do.
