“What I’ve Done”, by Melinda Leigh, is another thrilling romantic suspense novel featuring lawyer and former public prosecutor Morgan Dane, aided by boyfriend and partner Lance Kruger and friend, private investigator Lincoln Sharp.
What I absolutely loved about this story was the development of Sharp’s story and character and the unexpected, but utterly delicious twist on his (I hope) romantic life. I loved that the author introduced two possible female interests and apparently the chosen path is the least expected. I really look forward to have more about Sharp in the next books.
Morgan’s and Lance romance takes a new step too, that was lovely to watch.
As usual, I’m more interested in the romantic plot and the romantic and non-romantic dynamics between characters when working in dangerous conditions. While the suspense and crime plot evolves, the familial and friendship relations and scenes, the heroism and unselfishness of the main characters are so appealingly written that captured my heart.
Melinda Leigh’s characters are believable, relatable and seem human and I’m looking forward for the next story.
I have loved every book that MeLinda Leigh has written. Her books are full of suspense and emotion. I love the secondary characters and hope that this series continues
This series just keeps getting better!!!!
Thank you #netgalley and #montlakeromance for the eARC.
Someone from Lincoln’s past needs help when her daughter is accused of murder. Morgan is recovering from a concussion after a client sucker punched her outside court. Morgan takes the case to help Lincoln who has done so much for her. The facts of the case against their client are overwhelming. When they start investigating it appears someone is determined to shut their investigation down, by any means.
This book grabbed me from the first page. There is suspense with plenty of twists and turns in the story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I love the characters and how they connect to each other. This is part of the Morgan Dane series and could stand alone, but the other books are just as good so why deprive yourself. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
Haley Powell has no recollection of how she ended up in the bed she awakes in, nor why she is covered in blood. When she finds someone she does know there is no relief as he is dead, obviously murdered and all she can ask is 'What have I done?' Luckily her mother is on hand to help and contacts her old friend Lincoln Sharp, P.I! What could possibly go wrong?
This is an excellent fourth installment of the Morgan Dane series. As with the previous three I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and was kept guessing on the main aspects of the storyline until the end. I can highly recommend all of Miss Leigh's series but this is definitely my favourite at the moment.
The three main characters, Morgan, Lance and Sharp, are on top form and their working relationship has been moved along nicely. With each book Morgan is becoming more a part of the team, trying to accept her defection to, as she sees it, the dark side as a defence attorney as well as understanding what makes the three of them tick both as a unit and individually. She is also getting bolder and dare I say, kick ass. I love it.
This time we get to see a little more of Sharp; his background and vulnerabilities as well as his personal view of right and wrong. Haley was a baby the last time he saw her and he has an almost overwhelming need to right previous wrongs, as he sees them, and protect her and her mother. Neither woman is as sympathetic as the main characters in the previous stories, to me at least, but they are written in such a way that by the end you can accept their flaws and see what causes them. There is also the introduction of an interesting female journalist who I very much enjoyed.
As with all of Melinda Leigh's beautifully written novels the case intrudes into the everyday lives of Morgan, Lance and Sharp, making all three of them assess what they have as well as what they have lost. Although we see less of Morgan and Lance's families this time the ending is no less satisfactory because of this. I think there is at least one more story to be told in this series; I am already looking forward to it.
Fast paced, never slowed down. Roller coaster of emotion from beginning to end. I love Morgan and Lance. I love the fact that Morgan is a strong independent women, mother, attorney. I want her to be my friend :) I love the relationship between Lance and Morgan. Every relationship between all family members is so relate-able. so understandable. Then the plot just knocks you on your butt, tangles you up as you search for the actual culprit right along with Morgan and Lance. I am ready for the next book, and whats up with "Lincoln" lol, where are we going? I highly recommend this to all. You don;t need to read the previous books, but why wouldn't you? Thank you Montlake, Thank you Net Galley and thank you Melinda Leigh!
What I’ve Done, By Melinda Leigh is a thriller that you will find hard to put down. The story is well written, with well-defined characters and a plot that will keep you guessing as it takes you on a twisting and winding road.
The story begins with a horrendous crime, a sure conviction of the vulnerable culprit and a cocky DA that you love to hate and hate enough to love. There is no sure thing when Morgan and Dane are involved, and doesn’t the sheriff and DA know it. The acting sheriff in over his head and DA that hates that Morgan has bettered him in every case that they worked as opposing opponents, mostly because he was always on the short end to the stick.
Lance a PI and former police detective working with Sharp, a benevolent steward, friend and life-long friend of the family, has a nose for finding the truth. A sleuth in the truest sense of the word and teamed up with Morgan a true-blue heart if there ever was one, work together to prove that Haley is innocent of murder even when it looks like her conviction is a hands down sure thing.
Leave it to Melinda to provide you with a ride that will rival the best fun-park in America. Potential villains are brought into the story and once you are completely enrapped with their flawed and unscrupulous character, another one pops up to dispel the previous. Just when you are sure that you have figured it out another twist in the tale is introduced which you can’t help from questioning your earlier convictions.
I highly recommend this book for your sure pleasure and enjoyment. I fun way to spend a day when the weather is not so favorable and there is time on your hands. You won’t want to put this book down until the very end.
BOOM 💥
I know I say this every time...
But this was sooooo absolutely fabulous. This series just keeps getting better & better. Morgan Dane is a total badass, mom, lawyer & gun wielding solver of crimes!!!! Love all the surrounding characters too. I can’t wait for more.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #MontlakeRomance for the ARC
Leigh’s fourth book in the Morgan Dane series and she continues to do what she does best and surprise us. The book reads better as part of the series though it can be read as a stand-alone. I recommend reading the whole series as the characters will be severely under-developed without doing so. Their backstories truly make the whole story.
A young woman wakes up groggy and with no memory of the previous night’s activities. She finds herself in a strange bed, naked, and covered in blood. When she contemplates leaving, she finds a man’s dead body, a man she may or may not have slept with the night before. All she can think is, "What have I done?!"
When Morgan Dane decided to make the switch from the prosecutor’s bench to the defense’s side of the courtroom she did so with the premise of helping those wrongfully accused. Morgan is up against insurmountable evidence pointing to her next client being guilty. A client that she took on as a favor for her friend, Lincoln Sharp. With the help of her boyfriend and partner, Lance Kruger, Morgan and Lance work to piece together the night in question. However, as they get closer to the truth, both Morgan and Lance become targets themselves. Will they solve the mystery before its too late?
In typical Leigh format, we are held in suspense until the very end. The romance factor in this book is a bit scaled back for her style of writing. However, as readers who have followed this series, we do get to see the relationship development aspect between Morgan and Lance play out which is a bit more satisfying. 4 stars. Nice, easy read.
Thank you for this early copy!
I would recommend this to anyone who loves a well-written thriller. It was an interesting read.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
First off, I have read all of the books in this series. I've read a lot from Melinda Leigh and have liked her stories and writing style. Something that I appreciate with this series and author compared to some other romantic suspense/thriller books I have read is that the the suspense/thriller is a good story in itself. It doesn't rely on the romantic side to fill up pages or to move the story along.
I absolutely love the dynamics within Morgan's family and her work. Morgan, Lance, and Sharp have great work chemistry and a true respect for each other. They all take their work seriously and recognize their own strengths and limitations. This case for them has a lot of moving pieces and lot of things just aren't lining up. This case brings them a lot of danger but everything works out in the end. I'm interested in the incorporation of Espisito into the story more. We are learning more about him and are not quite sure what to think yet.
This story is one of the first times we get to sneak into Sharp's life a little. And is that a potential romance for Sharp!? I love Morgan and Lance's relationship. Nothing ever seems forced or like they are just riding adrenaline. Their love just seems very organic and real. So happy for them!
Thanks to Montlake romance and Netgalley for an early copy.
I've always Melinda Leigh's works. Her imagination is vivid and she sticks to develop a rigid storyline with definitive characters.
Lately, I've been reading a lot of domestic Noirs, that to me, this particular plot appears a bit monotonous. The memory loss after a terrific incident, bloody hands not remembering what happened before plot is something in trend these days.
Yet for the love of Melinda's writing, I am continuing with reading the novel.
This is the 4th in the series. The previous ones are brilliant but this is the best one yet!! I raced through it because I couldn't put it down!
Once again we see Morgan, Lance and Sharpe working together to solve a gruesome case! Sharpe is asked by an old friend to help her daughter who's accused of murder and gas no recollection of the night in question! With all the evidence pointing to her being guilty Morgan, Lance and Sharpe race against time to prove her innocence....if she really is innocent!! Lots of bumpy rides along the way.
Beyond brilliant I can't wait for the next one!! Thanks a million Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this book. Melinda you've outdone yourself again!!
Thank you MontLake Romance and Melinda Leigh I received a digital copy of this book from the author and publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Melinda Leigh does it again. Each book gets better than the one before and the ones before are excellent. I always love the connection between Lance and Morgan and of course their boss and friend Sharp. If you haven't read the previous books you can read this stand alone but I encourage you to read the others soon because it helps you connect with these characters even more and are excellent reads. Morgan, is a defense attorney and a widowed mother to three lively little girls. Sharp head of their PI agency is contacted by a woman from his past who's daughter Haley has been arrested for murder. Lance, a former police officer and now PI and partner to Morgan will do anything for his boss and mentor Sharp. Keeping Haley from going to prison for a heinous murder they don't think she committed is going to be one of the toughest challenges they have faced. The evidence is overwhelmingly stacked against her. Found covered in blood and only her finger prints on the murder weapon are just two. Complicating it even more she has no memory of that night and after being kept in jail for the weekend it's too late to see if she was drugged. She is a quiet nice girl and liked the victim why would she? When death threats and even attempts on their lives happen Morgan and Lance know they have to keep themselves safe and find out the truth fast. The sheriff is not looking at any other suspects as he already settled on Haley for the murder because of so much evidence. Plus searching for a girl who's been missing for over a week is keeping the sheriff busy anyhow. More than once Lance and Moran just barely escape death in their search to save Haley all the time strengthening their bond to each other. Lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing and interested I highly recommend this book.
Morgan has a messy case land in her lap in this 4th outing of the series. A person from Lincoln Sharp past begs for his help after her daughter his accused of a viscous murder. He in turn asks Morgan to represent her and she and Lance are in a race against time to prove her innocence even though all evidence points to her guilt. But the deeper they dig into things it becomes obvious that someone doesn't want them proving her innocence and everyone's life is suddenly becomes in danger.
Full of suspense and harrowing moments. Also lots of character development in this one – one from a staple of the series and another from a surprising secondary character. This series gets better with each book. Cant wait to see what's next.
OMG.. I started reading this book, and had to stop to go to work. The kindle went to sleep, and when I got home from work the bottom of the kindle screen wouldn't come on (NOOOOOO.. yes I actually yelled that).
I dug out an old tablet, and of course it had to be charged (groan.. yes I did groan).
Finally get the tablet charged enough to read with the tablet plugged in, and OMG.. SOOOO much suspense in this book.
I sat up reading through the night and into the morning to finish the book hahaahaha. Have everything you'll need for snacks, drinks etc ready and beside you, because you aren't going to be able to walk away from this book for even a minute.
The amount of things that could go wrong for Morgan and Lance do indeed go wrong. Everything you can think of gets thrown at them throughout this book, and the intensity had me clenching my jaw. A very emotional read as well.. omg.. I went through so many different emotions it was ridiculous.
This is my new favourite book in this series.. yes I say that after each book, but seriously.. A fantastic story, and well worth losing a couple of hours of sleep over.
The book can be read as a standalone, but the whole series is so amazing it is definitely worth reading all of them in order.
Bravo Melinda.. Another outstanding book!
The fourth installment in the Morgan Dane series. Can be read as a standalone novel, but to truly grasp the relationships between the characters it would be worth your while to read all the books.
Complex character development is a hallmark of Melinda Leigh's writing. Her characters are always people I can relate to, people I would like.
Twenty-five year old Haley Powell goes out to the club with her friend one night, and wakes up in the morning with a gap in her memory and blood on her hands, and the body of the man she went home with dead in the yard. With the evidence overwhelmingly against her daughter, her mother Eliza reaches out to private investigator Lincoln Sharp, an old friend, for help. He asks attorney Morgan Dane to take the case and attempt to find out what really happened that night. What Morgan doesn't know is that by helping out her friend, she's walking right into the path of the killer, and putting the people she loves there too.
3.5 Stars. I enjoyed this; but didn’t realize I was jumping into a series four books in. The case itself was a good read. The dynamics that have been building since the beginning of the series threw me, though. I definitely don’t recommend reading this standalone.
