Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC!

Pastors Cowles and Roberts work primarily with folks who have experienced or are experiencing homelessness and/or addiction. I found their theology very concerning: (subtly) anti-LGBTQ+; too individualistic (focusing on individual choices to the exclusion of systemic analysis); suggesting folks experiencing domestic violence can/should "save" their abusive spouses; constantly calling those they serve "broken people"; etc.

1/5 stars.

What an amazing book!
I shed tears, laughed and got cold shivers. It is so good. As a pastor in a small but growing church, it's often hard to navigate the messiness of people's lives when they come to faith. I appreciated Matt and Rob's honesty about the struggles that come with this, but ultimately the fulfillment as well. They root their thoughts in theology but the book is filled with experience and stories of how this flashes out in real life. A good read for leaders in the church everywhere!

“Nearly everyone has someone in their circle of acquaintances who struggles-an-out-of-control friend or relative whose habits or relationships are in chaos. Is there any hope, or is he or she doomed to self destruction?

Matt Roberts and Rob Cowles provide a sweet and strong topic to read about. Organized thoughtfully, this message is important for anyone to read.

New beginnings are possible no matter how broken, devastated, messy, or crazy someone’s life may be.

This book is powerful. I cried through sections of this book, surprised at just how powerful this narrative can be. You have the opportunity to create a new life. You can pursue real relationships. You can open up your true self. You can build a true and safe community.

Roberts and Cowles book is a must read for those interested in the Christian genre, and those who are interested in learning more.
