I am really enjoying this series a lot. The books are well written. The characters are very likable. I found Keli to be much more likable in this installment. I love Wes and all the quirky side characters. I love the Wiccan holiday theme and the settings. The mystery in this one was very well laid out and kept me guessing right up until the end. So yea, this was a delightful way to spend a grey and rainy Saturday.
Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Books for this ARC of Samhain Secrets.
Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year, especially in October. There is something that just feels magical about that time of year. The beauty behind the leaves changing colors, the scent of cinnamon and baked apples, and the crisp night air. Needless to say, I was very excited to read such an autumn themed book!
Samhain Secrets is a fascinating crime thriller, including; Samhain, Halloween, Wicca, environmentalists, ghosts and other supernatural elements! Hesse did a wonderful job making it feel as if I was walking through the Autumn days with Kelli! Her descriptions and settings were easy to imagine and I even felt like I could smell the apple cider donuts at the pumpkin patch too!
*spoilers*
Kelli is a lawyer and also Wiccan. It's not surprise to her when a woman approaches her and says her Aunt Josephine is missing. Josephine has always been a free spirit who travels from place to place. Somehow though, Kelli has always felt a strange closeness to her aunt. Josephine is found murdered and Kelli is left reeling. At first it appears the murder could be a horrible accident, but Kelli uncovers secrets about her aunt and she knows she needs to help find the killer. Kelli doesn't know who she can trust in this web of secrets. Soon, supernatural occurrences begin to happen and one thing Kelli knows for sure; Josephine's death was no accident.
Samhain Secrets is a great mystery and a great read for any stormy, Autumn day!
I enjoyed this book, it was the perfect book to read in the heat of summer wishing it was Halloween. Keli is a great female slueth, who is hiding her Wiccan religion from her law firm colleagues. She is running a haunted house while trying to convince her client that her house near a graveyard isn't haunted. In the middle of this, she learns that her eccentric environmentalist aunt has gone missing. Can she figure out where her aunt is and debunk the ghosts? This was a nice quick read. The beginning was a little s!is but picked up i would recommend this book, especially the paranormal and Halloween fans
I love these books, I’ve talked about that a lot in previous reviews. What really stood out to me was change in Keli’s life. A lot of information about her family comes out and she’s becoming stronger spiritually. Her relationship is changing but perhaps not for the best. And she finally faces up to her work situation and that change is needed there too.
I love the way Hesse writes Keli - she may be indecisive at times, but she’s never stagnant. I feel like she’s constantly moving forward in her self-discovery journey. Can’t wait to read the next one!
Samhain Secrets is an interesting addition to the series.
I like Keli and how she follows her beliefs. In this story, a murder hits close th home leaving the investigation in Keli's hands, since it is her Aunt who has been murdered.
Someone is trying to prevent the truth from coming out, and danger lurks around every corner.
I volunteered to read and review an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
I love fall, Halloween and Samhain. Reading Jennifer David Hesse Samhain Secrets in Mexico got me so excited for Fall. While I do love these long summer days and nights, I am more of a sweater weather and jeans kind of girl. I loved being transported into the town of Edindale, Illinois where the Wiccan Wheel Mystery Series takes place. Main character Keli Milanni is a great character. She feels like someone I could be very close to and a great friend to have. This book I will tell you had me sad in the beginning, so sad, I felt so much empathy for Keli and yet then so inspired. I felt so emotionally invested in the story that I hated to put it down, I cried, I smiled, I loved and I laughed. In the end my heart soared. I loved this book and I love this series. This one is out at the end of the month and is a must read, the series is a must read for light paranormal witchy mystery fans. I also love these great covers that Kensington has for this series.
Samhain Secrets by Jennifer David Hesse is even better than the previous books in the series. I really like the main character, Keli Milanni. With each book the author allows the character to grow even more. She's not as hesitant to accept help from Mila and her coven as she used to be, though she still won't join a coven herself. I was a bit sad that the victim was Keli's Aunt Josephine because I had hoped we'd see them meet and get to know one another eventually. I was taken by surprise when the motive for murder was revealed, but I did suspect who the killer was. But I also suspected three other characters, so it still was kind of a surprise when I found out who did it. Another thing I liked about this book is that it was kind of hinted at that maybe there's going to be a new love interest for Keli eventually. Not that I don't like Wes, but it would provide some new dynamics in the series if that relationship ended and a new one began. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the author has planned there in a future book. All in all, the story was terrific and the mystery was very clever. I like the supernatural elements and how the author incorporated them into this particular book. I highly recommend this book, especially if you love witchy mysteries.
Note: I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review.
It’s that time of year again when ghosts come out to play. But attorney Keli Milanni discovers it isn’t just restless spirits who walk the night, so does murder.
After her recent promotion to junior partner, Keli is putting in overtime to juggle her professional career and private Wiccan spiritual practice, and her boyfriend. With Halloween fast approaching, her duties include appearing as a witch at a “haunted” barn and hand-holding a client who’s convinced her new house is haunted. But it’s the disappearance of Josephine O’Malley, her aunt that has Keli spooked.
Keli’s aunt is an environmental activist and free spirit who always seemed to embody peace, love, and independence. When Josephine is found dead in the woods, Keli wonders if her aunt’s activities were as innocent as they seemed. As Keli comes to terms with her loss, her live-in boyfriend and demands at work, she must wield her magic to banish negative energy. If she’s going to catch a killer this Samhain season, it's going to take a bit of magic.

Series: A Wiccan Wheel Mystery - Book 4
Author: Jennifer David Hesse
Genre: Cozy Mystery/Witch/Paranormal
Publisher: Kensington Books
Jennifer David Hesse is a gifted storyteller; her Wiccan Wheel Mystery series is thought-provoking and timely. In a world where everything is out of balance, it is refreshing to find a book series that reminds us that we need balance in all things. This series is quickly becoming a fan favorite and should continue to enthrall readers for many years to come.
Samhain Secrets is a well written, fast-paced and highly enjoyable book. This is the 4th book in this series and is a great fit. At long last readers get to meet Keli’s enigmatic aunt. Unfortunately, that aunt has been murdered. Keli sets her sights on finding out why her aunt was so mysterious, and why someone wanted her dead.
Keli is a likable character who continues to evolve, both personally and in her beliefs. She isn’t as averse to being around other Witches, or Wiccans and finds that she enjoys the company of others who have her same beliefs and religion more and more. She is a character who knows that things aren’t always what they seem, even murder. She has her hands full with work, boyfriend, and community, adding murder to the mix has become almost mandatory in her world. She handles everything well and shows that she is stronger than she ever thought she could be.
All the characters in this new addition to the series are memorable. They each have a role to play in Keli’s life. They help comfort and on occasion remind Keli of who she is. They are not just friends but have become part of her family. They, like Keli, are evolving and becoming more well-rounded individuals. Most are lovable, and it is easy to connect to one or more of them.
The setting is wonderful with just enough forest and city combined to make anyone want to visit or move there. It has a quality that allows the reader to think of it fondly, like a treasured place from childhood.
All in all Samhain Secrets is a fun, enjoyable and highly entertaining book that adds flavor and intrigue to the series. Readers will love Keli and the other characters that charm and delight throughout the book. I highly recommend this book and the series to anyone who enjoys a good who-done-it, magic and the wonder of the world around us.
ARC recieved from NetGalley
I enjoyed this but would like to go back to the beginning to get a better feel for Keli and how her relationships and introduction to Wicca started. It was easy enough to follow along, however, and understand the characters and mystery, it would just be nice to know their history with each other.
This is the fourth book in the series, and as the previous books, it is a home run!
The characters are engaging, the whodunit was well written, and the premise is A1.
I hope this series continues!
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
This book was a delight. I was initially skeptical at how witch and conservative sounding lawyer would work as a character, but the author blends the two gracefully.
Keli's aunt is quite the enigma, and while I don't quite understand why she outright avoided her family, it all adds to the mystery.
Wes and Keli's relationship also seemed quite tense in this book so it will be interesting to see where they go from here.
I enjoyed sharing this book with my audience and will continue to follow the series.
Fourth book in the series, but the first I've read. Unfortunately, a little too Wiccan for me so was not able to get into it. Completely my fault as it is called the Wiccan Wheel mystery. I wasn't sure if the Wiccan practices had basis in reality or were completely fiction so couldn't make a connection.
I received an eARC from Kensington via NetGalley for an honest review. - The characters and the setting are nice and it made perfect sense as to why the main character became involved in the murder.
With time I’ve become a fan of Jennifer David Hesse. It’s why I’m greatfull to netgalley, I discovered this writer through this website. It’s got everything I enjoy in a cozy: mystery, well created, witty characters (I really like Keli) and it hooks you up from the beginning. Thanks for my copy.
Samhain Secrets by Jennifer David Hesse was a great addition to this series, IMHO. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Kelli is swamped with work as a new partner at her law firm. She hardly has time to spend with Wes or her friends and the stress is beginning to get to her. Then the police contact her to notify her that her Aunt Josephine has been killed in the woods near Edindale. She is heartbroken but determined to find out who and why her aunt was killed. The plot captured me from the first page and sped along at such a quick pace that I didn't want to put it down. With the help of her friends, a little Wiccan magic and Kelli's own stubborness, she begins to unravel the life of her mysterious aunt. I always learn something new about the Wiccan culture in Ms. Hesse's books which I appreciate. So many suspects, twists and turns, friendships, family, a "haunted" house and a little touch of magic made this a book that captivated me from the beginning.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own. I would like to sincerely thank Kensington for allowing me to read and review this book.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This was a cute cozy witchy mystery. This is the first book I have read by this author. I plan to read the three that came before this. I like the Samhain season and learning about Keli's magickal practice. What she has to do to find what happened to her aunt and find out about her new client's house. This kept me wandering each time I turned the page what was going to happen next. I can't wait to go back and read the other so I know about the whole series. This little taste left me wanting more.
A cozy mystery... I liked the book, it had mystery and murder in it, this time a little closer to home. I realized this book was a part of the series, but I didn't have problems following the characters.
Keli as the main character was cute; I liked her Wiccan practices. It was fun to read about the spells cast and the commune with nature. I liked her investigative skills.
My first book by author Jennifer David Hesse, and it ticked all the right boxes of cozy witchy mystery. The mystery of who murdered her aunt caused Keli to go hunting for the murderer with a few clues from the aunt via dreams and channeling and some from other spirits and others from snooping into suspect's home (also known as B & E). I liked the friendships which weaved around Keli, keeping her tied to her beliefs and to her community.
Reading a cozy book after such a long time, this was a pleasant jump into this genre. But I would have loved a better story, more intrigue, more spirit-y horror, more emotions to make this an awesome read.
Overall, a sweet fast read!!
It's Halloween season and Keli has a lot going on, she's finally made Junior partner in the law firm, it's also Samhain for Keli's Wiccan side, a former client is haunted in her new home and the aunt Keli has always hoped to meet has gone missing. When Keli is notified that her aunt has been killed, she steps up again to solve the mystery, with a some help from her friends.
This is the fourth book in the Wiccan Wheel Mystery series and Hesse can truly paint a scene for the reader. Just like the cover you'll feel the crisp night air and shiver in the graveyard with Keli while she's closing in on the ghostly sounds coming from a tomb. The characters are well rounded and the story rolls along a fast pace, it takes a couple of different storylines and ties them together well with an uplifting ending. Strong. smart female characters and a good community storyline..
The story line cover all kinds of topics, friendship, balancing work and personal relationships, and a mystery to boot. It's a fun quick read and I think it will appeal to a wide variety of readers. I had not read the first three books, but didn't have any problems diving in and enjoying the story. The ending leaves you ready for the next book and hints at some new directions for Keli, I can't wait to see where she goes.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) from NetGalley in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
My review has been posted to Goodreads.
Review has also been tweeted as usual.
Thank you! :c)
Attorney Keli needs the help of her friends from her firm to find out about her aunt Josephines death. However, Keli has only met her aunt once and her life has been a total mystery. Jealousy, greed, money, ask play an important role.
It’s not easy being a partner in a law firm while still finding time to practice her spiritual life, but Wiccan Keli Milanni is doing her best. With Halloween fast approaching, Keli has a lot to juggle, but the disappearance of her aunt, Josephine O’Malley trumps everything. Keli’s worst fears are confirmed when her peace-loving environmental activist aunt is found dead. Using her magic, Keli will attempt to smoke out a killer and get justice for her aunt
