All right, this is could have been a great book but it's marredd by trash themes and poor execution as far as I am concerned. The author was failed by her editors :s
The author is talented, the world building is fantastic, the mythology is great and fresh but the beginning is unbearable and I grew up on bad fanfic! The abuse that's included and how it's rationalized with fallacious cultural relativism is just ewww inducing. I also had to refrain from throwing my reader across the room every time blood purity being so spechul111 was brought up.
It's a hard no for me.
The captivating contemporary fantasy trilogy about a tribe of shapeshifters, deep within the inhospitable forest of northern Maine USA, in an alternate dimension known as Blackwater Hills.
This was a pretty good trilogy. It was definitely different from other stories I read. The stories flowed seamlessly from one to the next. I liked following the characters throughout. I recommend.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
I tried reading this and unfortunately this was not a book for me. I had a very hard time connecting to the characters and the way it was written was not really my taste. I do think the premise is good and that other people will enjoy this, however it wasn't my cup of tea. That being said I was unable to finish after 75% and felt I would not review unless you specifically requested.
Not what I was expecting - While it starts off a little odd, if readers stick with it you'll find a lot of intrigue and a unique take on the shapeshifter lore.
This... Was not what I was expecting. In quite a good way. I thought it would be a shifter romance, and it is, in parts. But actually, its a clan-drama in a fantasy setting, full of social politics and scheming, lies and retribution. And it's actually rather good! If, like me, you were hoping for some steamy fluff, you may be disappointed, as the few sex scenes are PG, but I certainly got embroiled into tribe politics and didn't feel the lack.
The trilogy takes place over a large time period, but focuses on one family within the tribe. I felt a little confused at the beginning, as the author chose to have a minor character begin the novel, which was a little jarring, and there are a few clichés within - the protags describing themselves whilst looking in a mirror (which is fast becoming a real pet peeve of mine) or a reflection in the pond.
However, in all, a broadly entertaining trilogy well worth a read if you like fictional gods and the secrets that bind.
Four stars as I really lost interest in the third episode, I had little to no interest in Catriona's story, and would have rather had either a development or similar within the Corvus tribe.
