A great start to a new series from Wagers. I’ll read anything by them, and I think fans of action-packed science fiction should find plenty to like, here.

Different emphasis in this sci-fi tale of our galaxy and its various inhabitants. Although indicated as #1 of Farian War series, there is a tremendous volume of references to the past history of Wagers prior trilogy. Felt in the dark in a sense some of the time due to commentary about past relationships.

I read the Indranan War trilogy that takes place before this book and really enjoyed it! These books are a fun sci-fi space opera with a good blend of action-adventure and characters that you can fall in love with.

While this was a good start to the next trilogy, it wasn’t as good as the books before it. While “There Before the Chaos” still has the action of the prior 3 titles, all the action happened at the end. There was a lot of waiting around and politics in the first 2/3 of the book. I love political SFF, so I wasn’t bothered by it, but if you need action all the time, this book will feel like it drags.

Also, be warned for a MAJOR clifffhanger endings. If that’s not something you enjoy be sure to have the next book handy after you read this one.

While not required, I do highly recommend reading the Indranan War trilogy before this title, as otherwise you will miss the finer details of the story.

3.5 stars rounded up.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the e-ARC. All my opinions are my own.

There Before the Chaos epitomizes the space opera genre, weaving a complex universe with a powerful protagonist and a story that utilizes political intrigue, space travel and a strong history. The novel is an extension of an existing universe but it stands mightily on its own. Wagers is an expert at dialogue and discourse, taking you directly into the action that unfolds after the dust of war has settled. Prepare to contemplate the trappings of power and the consequences of actions that could put an end to the universe.
