I've had this book for years, I still haven't, unfortunately, got to it, so this is a placeholder review to reduce my shelf for my own sanity, but will replace this if I ever get to the book
I do love books that are set in areas that I have visited and as my husband lived in Martham within the Norfolk Broads when I met him and we visited Great Yarmouth quite a few times I knew this was a book that would spark my interest!
The pace was good for this one and I enjoyed the plot but I found it was a little disjointed about a third of the way through but it soon picked back up and I enjoyed the ending.
The characters in the story were good and they are definitely ones I wouldn’t mind reading about again. They were well developed and I enjoyed that their different personalities shone through.
Four stars from me for this one, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
This started off so well and I was very excited. Then I don't know what happened; I understand that the author wanted more than one thread running through, but either there were too many threads or each thread had too many people attached. I got totally confused by which criminal was attached to which crime. At times it felt like the initial murder had been forgotten in amongst everything else that was going on. I got hopelessly lost, and that led to me losing interest in the outcome. It ended up taking me over a week to read because I kept falling asleep whilst reading. Not for me this one I'm afraid.
Title was archived before I could review it sadly. Guess I will have to buy it if I would like to read it. I am new to the Galley and was not aware of the fact that the archival date meant that I could not access the title anymore. Too bad
DS Adam Burnt has just moved to the Norfolk Police Force from the Midlands for personal reasons (He thinks his wife is cheating on him). He lands his first case which is the death of two teenage boys who, according to a witness, were fighting. Later there is another death.
Murder by the Broads is a good Police Procedural. I enjoyed the story, though I found it complicated to follow the various shifts in time and characters but overall not a bad read at all
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book.
A boy is dead after being hit by a vehicle and another boy is found with a knife in his neck. No one is sure what happened. Nothing seems to fit and the search is on for a suspect. Adam Burnt is assigned the case and he's determined to solve it.. No one is telling the truth so it will take all his skills to figure it out.
The writing was very confusing to me, with people being introduced with not much information about who they are . The story is interesting with twists and turns and a surprise at the end.
Not only is this the debut book in the DS Adam Burnt series, it is the author's debut book! Sometimes when you read British police procedurals, it almost seems like the main leads are superhuman- you can't quite picture them say having the flu, whining to their spouse, or the like. But not this one. Burnt is a character we all can relate to- while he knows he is a good detective, he wonders still why his wife married him and if she leave him. Then add in a murder that doesn't make sense, and he has some serious clue hunting to set off on. The book is told from different perspectives at times and that may seem like it's slowing the book down, but it is giving the reader more clues, and allowing for a slower set up, to the nail biting ending! This was a good read, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
Well written and definitely a thriller! The development in the story after one of the characters was attacked and institutionalized was a bit distressing for me - not sure why - and I took a break from the book
A story with many facets which take some keeping up with until gradually they all start to intertwine in such a devious plot it beggars belief of your regular citizen. This book disturbingly gives a birds eye inside view into the minds ravaged by drugs and the evil beings who profit from their misery, who will stop at nothing to cover their tracks. Detective Burnt is clever and honest but he’s fighting against the odds with a bent colleague carefully pointing him in the wrong direction. The chapters are told from each character’s point of view which takes some keeping up with if you’re not reading in one sitting but it’s so worth persevering as this is original, gripping and a very cleverly told tale. A great read.
Netgally copy.
I really enjoyed this. Its been a whole since I've read a good police procedural and this didn't disappoint. Twists and turns throughout. Definitely a good read:)
3.5☆ A Debut Crime Thriller
(Rounded up to 4☆ for Amazon and Goodreads)
Murder By The Broads is a crime thriller, debut novel and the first book in a new series.
DI Adam Burnt has just moved into a new area with his family and it's not long before his thrown into a double murder.
Two teenage boys have been found murdered. Adam is tasked to work out if the two murders are connected.
I think the case is particularly tough as they two boys are both young.
The story is told in alternate time lines from the present and leading up to the murders. I quiet like it written like this as the reader gets to be involved from the start.
However I did get a little confused at times when the story switched and found myself flicking back to make sure.
The pace is steady which made a change to the fast paced crime thrillers/ mysteries I usually read.
You do get a fair amount of story about Adam and his home life. I am intrigued to see how his character will develop. He is extremely dedicated to the force and his family seem to take a back seat.
Murder By The Broads is a slower paced crime fiction, that has a few lil twists and a dedicated DI.
Overall a good first book in the series.
Intrigued to see what's next in-store for the series.
Thank you to Bloodhound books for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
A very confusing and difficult plot to understand. The story seemed to jump backwards from time to time. Struggled to finish, found the end totally confusing.
My review is written with thanks to Sarah Hardy at Bloodhound Books for inviting me to participate and for my copy of the book via Netgalley.
Detective Sergeant (DS) Adam Burnt is at a crime scene when he realises he is not dealing with one, but two murders. The clues lead him to St Nicholas Mental Health Institute, where he is under pressure to find the killer and bring them to justice. Can he find a balance between his personal and professional lives and discover what really happened by the broads on the night the victims were killed?
Murder By The Broads is our first introduction to DS Adam Burnt. As a police officer, he struggles to ingratiate himself with his colleagues and the wider community, and this means his methods sometimes come across as a little cold. However, the reader does get a glimpse into his family life, and this helped me to see why Adam behaves in the way he does. I enjoyed this insight into his character, and believe that there is definitely more to come from him, especially given the way the novel ends.
There are several characters in Murder By The Broads, and this leads to quite a few suspects! Although it took me a while to fully understand who was who and how they were related to each other, I found them all very interesting in their own way. Tamiozzo creates a comprehensive back story for each character, even those who are relatively minor, making the novel incredibly compelling as I tried to work out what happened.
The plot of Murder By The Broads is very complex, and I can only assume it took several timelines and post-it notes for Tamiozzo to get it spot on. After the first few chapters, the novel goes back in time to the days and hours leading up to the murders. As such, the reader is aware of what has happened before the police, making for very tense reading and a very enjoyable cat and mouse chase.
DS Adam Burnt's move to the Broads is not going well. But is made worse when he is called out to the scene of two deaths. What is the story leading to the deaths of these boys and who else has been and will be affected.
An interesting well-written story with a multi-lavered plot which kept my interest. A good start for a new series, in which I expect to learn more about these characters.
Murder By The Broads by Anthony Tamiozzo
In his debut novel author Anthony Tamiozzo introduces us to DS Adam Burnt. Burnt moved his family from the east to the midlands a couple years before the story begins and seems to still not be 100% part of the police team he works with. His partner, DC Ashley, his partner, does seem to have his back.
Burnt is different than most heroes. Main characters in this genre often have flaws but Burnt’s are a bit different than others I have met through reading and for some reason I would really like to know why he is so jealous, why he puts his job before his family and a bit more about his past. His flaws begin to show soon in the story and increase as he works to find out who might be behind the death of two young men. The flaws are not enough to keep him from doing his job but definitely make him interesting.
The story begins in the present with DS Burnt being called out to the location of the dead youths. A few chapters in the story goes back a week in time to the beginning of the story and unfolds in a way that I was not expecting. There are drugs, young thugs, mental patients, internal police issues, family issues and more that are exposed as a clearer picture of what occurred and why it happened as it did is unveiled.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Will I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloodhound books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4 Stars
This is the first book in the DI Adam burnt police procedural series... it is also this author’s debut, so a big congratulations on your first published book! More than I will ever be able to say, that is for sure!
So Adam has moved his family to a different location in the UK, mainly to improve his marriage... The problem is Adam is married to his work, he also does not trust his wife... at all! However, this book focuses much more on the case rather than Adam’s home life... two teenage boys are murdered and their bodies are found close together... how are these murders related and why would anybody kill these young boys? When another body is discovered the case really gets heated up with much pressure to solve... Adam is a committed detective however his lack of familiarity with the area does hurt him....
This is a book you need to pay close attention to as it jumps around quite a bit... admittedly there were times where I was a bit confused and had to go back and reread... i’m thinking because this was the author’s debut he probably had a lot going on in his head that he wanted to put to paper.... but sometimes less is a little bit better... definitely a complex plot that kept me on my toes! I also thought Adam Burnt was a interesting character and I am super curious to see what this character does next... there is quite a bit of potential for some tremendous character growth with him!
Recommend two fans of the police procedural, a good start to what looks like a wonderful series!
*** many thanks to Bloodhound Books for my copy of this book ***
"Murder By The Broads" is the first book in the DS Adam Burnt series based in Great Yarmouth. The author, Anthony Tamiozzo, uses this setting as it is where he grew up and having known many people who died or were killed because of drugs he uses these memories to inspire his writing and drugs feature strongly in this, his first book.
When the body of a dead teenager is found having been stabbed and another is discovered crushed by a lorry in a nearby location it has the look of a ruckus that had fatal consequences for the two involved. However, DS Burnt has a feeling that there may be more to it and resolves to investigate the matter further. Will it be a tragic fight gone wrong or will there be far more sinister undertones to the two boys' deaths?
I was eager to get into this one as it sounded right up my street but unfortunately it didn't quite work for me. Don't get me wrong, the story was engaging and interesting and had all of the elements to make it a fantastic read. However, there were a few issues with it - firstly, there were a multitude of different strands that made up the plot which meant it was difficult to keep up with and made me think that the author had tried to cram in as much action as possible. In most books less in most certainly more, and although I enjoyed DS Adam Burnt's character, I felt that at times there was a little too much information about his troubled relationship with his wife whom he believes has been unfaithful and not enough focus on building his character identity. The format was overcomplicated as not only does it move back and forth between present day and the lead up to the two teenagers deaths, it also has changing points-of-view and sometimes these changes appeared unannounced in the middle of a chapter so if you don't spot it quickly you easily become lost and rather confused. As we do not know the characters well with it being the first book this obviously made the recognition of different voices and perspectives almost impossible.
This is a promising debut from an author who definitely appears to have the potential to be successful if he just reigns it back a little. I will be keeping up with this series and watching its evolution closely. I hope to learn more about the characters in the upcoming books, especially DS Burnt - I feel his personal development was put on the back-burner here in order to explore his troubled marriage. Ultimately, as I read fiction for relaxation purposes this overcomplicated format coupled with the non-stop plot action made it difficult to enjoy and takes a lot of effort to keep up with.
Many thanks to Bloodhound Books for an ARC. I was not required to post a review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
This is a great debut novel. We are introduced to DS Adam Burnt who has recently moved to the Norfolk police for a fresh start. Although we get an insight into his personal life I hope we get to know more about him in the future.
His first investigation is into the deaths of two young boys found close to each other. The plot thickens when there is another death.
The story is told through present and past. It’s a complex story which you need to concentrate on to get the most from the story. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more from him in the future.
An excellent debut novel featuring DS Adam Burnt. The story flicks between the present day and the events leading up to the deaths of two boys. You really have to concentrate on this book and the pace is steady and tense. I had to go back and reread a couple of times due to the format but it is a good read and I would recommend it. My thanks to Net Galley for my copy. Reviewed on Goodreads and Facebook, with Amazon to follow.
This is a real page turner and it's hard to believe it is a debut novel. The pace is fast and the plot complex, keeping the reader thoroughly engrossed from the first page to the last, although I fear the number of strands running through may be a little off-putting for some. The story starts in the present day, then goes back a week to explain how events have unfolded to get to where they currently are, and then moves forward onto the shocking conclusion. The good characters were (in the main part) good with the customary few flaws, and the baddies were really bad! I liked DI Burnt and DC Ashley, and I hope that they appear in another story soon as I really enjoyed this one.
