Had high hopes for this, and they were....somewhat met. This is an excerpt and not the full book, butI am curious to keep reading. I might take this out of my local library.
The main characters were likable, the world was really interesting, moments of strong writing. The beginning was bogged down by exposition and info dumps, but it does get better as one goes along. Getting the feeling there will be a romance in this, which is ok, if a bit unnecessary.
Recommend for a fun pirate adventure!
*Egalley provided in exchange for an honest review
This was a really fun peek into what sounds like a thrilling adventure! I'll definitely be picking this one up and adding to my TBR
This got me intrigued and privies my interested. I ended up buying the book! It was enough to give me a sense of the feel of the book and main character!
A rollicking and fast-paced sea adventure story full of women's and girls' strength and camaraderie. Though the plot was a bit predictable at times, I stayed up late to read it and enjoyed seeing what and where Caledonia's crew would encounter next.
I got a copy of a sneak peek version of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I am hooked!
The sense of the fantasy place and the characters instantly drew me in, urging to scroll my screen for more. Will add this to my list.
I think this book makes a fantastic Christmas present for a teenager and/or his/her parents!
The characters are developed so that you can form a connection with them. The story starts off with a bang and continues. Great story.
A pirate story with a difference, an all female crew brought together by loss and a sense of pride to fight for what is right.
In a world where a man called Aric wants to rule everyone, who takes children from families to use them for his own cause & sails the seas with his Bullet Crews, dominating the waves. Calendonia is the captain of the Mors Navis an all girl crew determined to take down Aric once and for all, one ship at a time.
These girls have balls and have made there own kind of family and they leave no one behind, sisterhood is all.
The world building in this story is great, so vivid and real, the emotions are also very real! We go through all the emotions in this book. There is romance but it is not the main theme of the story, to be honest i would like to see these relationships grow more in the next book. The secondary characters all have strong personalities that you come to admire what each girl brings to the story.
I can’t wait to see where this story takes us especially after that cliffhanger of an ending!!
Super excited to read this! This was just an excerpt but boy am i hooked! i cant wait to see what happens in the full novel.
On the water in a futuristic dystopian setting that wasn't really explained Caledonia tries to make up for a mistake she made at 14 by living with very strict rules for her and her all female crew. Caledonia believed a Bullet which cost her and her bestie's families' ship and crew to die. Four years later, and a new crew/ family of 52 ladies everyone knows: Never trust a Bullet. The girls all have their own strengths and specialties. One prefers being in the water, another is good at tinkering, another skilled with healing, another at navigation. Teamwork is natural and the members take pride in their abilities. They are not better than one another but instead are dependable and appreciated for their contribution.
Aric Athair commands a mostly male fleet calling his henchmen Bullets, insuring loyalty and aggressiveness by keeping them doped up on Silt after stealing them from their families. Each one of the Mors Navis crew has lost loved one to Aric's tyranny so they decide to fight back every chance they get attacking one ship at a time leaving as many Bullets dead as they can. Its an extreme battle of the sexes and I would've preferred Caledonia's crew to be more mixed.
During one raid Pisces, Caledonia's long time friend and 2nd in command, gets captured and saved by a Bullet that turned against his crew. Pisces brought the Bullet, Oran, aboard with her in hopes of changing the mission. Maybe they can detox and save some Bullets or find their brothers? Friendship and loyalty is tested. The recurring theme is revenge but focuses on friendships and sisterhood. Girls can be especially catty so its nice to see healthy relationships displayed.
I'm disappointed this is going to be a trilogy and I have to wait years to finish this adventure.
I thoroughly enjoyed this little sneak peek, the writing is great, the characters are fantastic so far, and I'm enjoying the setting. I will definitely check out the whole book.
Rating: 4 stars
TWO CHAPTERS!!! How can I review based on two chapters? I have no feelings, no attachments. I really don't care to read any more of this book.
Even though this is just a sneak peak, it made me super excited to read the rest of the book. I'll be checking it out from my library ASAP!
Action-packed and fierce! I can't wait to read the whole book. The stakes are high, and the girls are smart and determined to get revenge. It seems like a fantastic story.
This sneak peek definitely pulled me in and got me interested. I was able to read the first three chapters very quickly and it already had me feeling for the characters and engaged in their story. I am quite sad this is only a sneak peek. It does have me curious enough the consider buying the full book, but it did not sell me one hundred percent, so we will see. It certainly had a good start though. It was exciting and intriguing.
❝ Caledonia was no stranger to sacrifice, but she preferred to make sure Aric’s would be greater. ❞
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a sample of this book! All opinions are my own!
As with any review based on a portion of the book, it is difficult for me to really judge how my initial reaction to the book will compare to the rest of the novel. So while I wasn’t overwhelmingly impressed with this book I am still keeping an open mind. I ordered a copy of the book and hope to be able to update this with a full review in the future, but for now, I’ll discuss my impressions based on the sample I received.
Things in the first three chapters felt kind of slow to me. Like in most books, the first chapters are spent worldbuilding and introducing characters. I think what made that feel like it was dragging on was that we were introduced to the life on the Ghost, building up their way of life, their beliefs, etc. and then when things progressed the story had to shift and kind of start over with the new crew and the main character on the Mors Navis. Once again, we had to be introduced to life on the ship and the characters so it just felt like the majority of the sample was spent stuck building up the environment and characters rather than working on the plot.
That being said, I was curious about the story and characters enough to preorder this book. However, I also felt like there were some similarities between Seafire and Zenith by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings that made me kind of hesitant about this book. I didn’t have a positive experience with Zenith because of its lack of originality and the choppy writing style and I noticed that Caledonia’s crew was similar to Androma’s crew from Zenith. Most notably, they both insist on using the character trope of a very small, young girl who is a gunner/fighter and kind of bloodthirsty.
When I made that connection I think I started to be more wary of the writing because I didn’t want Seafire making the same mistakes Zenith did. And it’s a big reason why I took a step back to look at this more objectively and settled on my three-star review; because while Seafire didn’t suck me in right away, it didn’t make any major mistakes that would make me want to quit on the book either.
I’m really hoping that once I get a chance to jump into the finished copy of Seafire that I’ll be pleasantly surprised by the story and character growth. It does feel like Seafire is trying to fit the gap that Zenith left with so many disappointed readers and I’m hoping that it’ll succeed in delivering a good story.
While it may be too early to tell, I’m really hoping this will be the fun all-female-pirate-crew novel that I’ve been looking forward to.
Seafire was released on August 28th, so feel free to check it out for yourself!
I received a preview of this book, which was roughly the first 30 pages - so this is a partial review.
The cover and the premise of the book first drew me to it. I was coming off reading a female pirate crew series and was immediately interested in reading more. The first few pages drew me into the story - fight scenes, death, possible betrayal - all so invigorating! I kept reading until my preview was over and I wanted more! This is definitely a book that I would read on and I hope to get a full copy soon!
Overall, the first few pages were definitely interesting enough to pique my interest, and I'm sure the rest of the book would have held it!
This looks AMAZING. I will definitely be buying the entire book after reading this sample! It's everything i needed in my life right now.
I didn't realize that this was a sampler, but I really enjoyed reading it. It made me very excited to check out the book!
[I was given a free digital copy through NetGalley]
Although I was only afforded an excerpt of this book, the sneak peek was worth the read. The excerpt included a prologue and three chapters, which was roughly only about fifty pages, give or take. Only the first couple of pages was enough to get me straight into the action of the novel. With a story set on the raging sea, the stakes are high for the all-female crew going up against the deadly league of men under the antagonist’s reign. The stakes are so high, in fact, that one has to prepare for character deaths before the ball even gets rolling. The story’s face-paced narrative had me reading this excerpt from start to finish. The all-female crew also added a little something to the story for me, especially because it’s such a great vision to see all of these girls holding all of these crew roles and keeping each other going. Despite not getting much of a chance to enjoy the main two characters, and only ever getting vague references to the main antagonist, this novel definitely has some spark and some grit to it, and I look forward to divulging into the rest of the story and its deadly sea.
This preview left me wanting more. I'm looking forward to picking up this new release. Thank you for the chance to read the preview.
