Elle is a cute, athletic woman running around the neighborhood. The only thing that makes her different from the other joggers is that she is canvassing the area for a good house to burglarize. So far she has been able to turn this into a good way to support herself.
One house looks perfect until she hits the bedroom and three people have been murdered!
Was someone watching? Now she is running for her life.
This book grabs from the beginning and all of the twists and turns will keep you reading.
Thomas Perry delivers another high concept thriller. You will not want to miss this book. If you are either new or a veteran a Perry new reader you’ll want to plan a sit down with this action thriller.
The main character, Elle Stowell, is meticulous, investigative, and swift. She knows how to pick locks, enter residences quietly, scout out homes and locations, and obtain wares from homes without owner knowledge – for the most part.
One day, she enters a home she’s been casing for a while. Thinking she’ll make out with some amazing objects, she assumes the owner is gone, but unfortunately finds him and two other women in an uncompromising situation in the bedroom and they are deceased. Elle panics a bit, realizes there is a camera filming and she’s now part of the footage. She takes the camera, goes home to study it, and returns it to the homeowner’s residence for the police to find after she’s wiped any trail of her presence.
Where she thought she was doing a good deed, tides begin to turn. Someone is aware that she was there and now they are after her. As she begins to research and study people associated with the murder victims, the lens begins to narrow to her. She doesn’t know who to trust and she doesn’t know where she’s safe.
Who is after her and why? And will she be able to get herself out of the situation alive?
I enjoyed this book. I liked the fact that after a bit of a backstory of Elle, even though many may disagree with her life choice of being a burglar (vocation passed down for generations), you begin to identify with her and want her to “win”. There are a few intense moments of car chases, foot chases, and an urgency that was well written. She is smart, determined, and willing to outsmart those chasing her, so justice can be done.
I loved the pace, the intrigue, the suspense building up to an event with someone she thought would become a love interest. That was better than the ending, in my opinion. But this was well written and hooked me. And I certainly learned a lot about burgling! 🙂

This was my first book by Thomas Perry and I found the storyline tedious and unbelievable. From one contrived situation to the next, nothing about this book made sense. I DNF’d.
Thoroughly enjoyed this thriller - loved the pace, the taut suspense, and trying to figure out the twists and turns and the what, why, and how. Elle Stowell is a professional burglar - she cases rich neighborhoods, gets familiar with the comings and goings of neighborhoods by jogging, strolling with a dog, and generally fitting in seamlessly. All the while, she’s checking out the house she really wants to break and enter into. Young, fit, petite, dressed to fit with the Jones, she’s not the type that would raise anyone’s antenna in a ritzy neighborhood. But then she breaks into a high-end home and makes a gruesome discovery - three dead people - all shot at close range. And, to her horror, she realizes that she has been discovered…(not going to give anything away here) and the hunt is on for her. From here on out, it’s a mad dash to figure out who knows what, why she’s being hunted and who is really after her. She knows there’s not going to be a “happy ever after” ending - it’s either her or the killers. She has to solve the case before she gets killed! This was an action-packed, full-on fast-paced thriller. Suffice it to say the reader knows Elle is going to emerge victorious - what thriller’s hero/heroine doesn’t? But how? That’s the beauty of the book - trying to figure it all out! The only nit about Elle - if she’s so smart, quick witted, and worldly, why the heck is she a petty burglar? Besides, she also has a conscience…But then again, we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience this heart-pounding book I guess! A recommended read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I enjoyed this book until everything started to come to light. I don't know why but it felt really drawn out and I found myself skimming most of it. Then then ending was unbelievable to me. It wasn't bad, it was worth the read. I would be willing to try another book by this author.
I tried a couple of times to get into this book, but didn't make it very far on both attempts. Could be the timing, not sure. I may go back at some point & give it another go, but I often found, if a book doesn't grab me from the 'get-go', it's lost to me.
The pacing of this book was so weird and it made it rather difficult to get into it.
I was really intrigued by the main character and seeing where she went but some of her thoughts were so back and forth that I found myself not enjoying her or caring much about her life.
This was a good thriller. It was entertaining and kept me moving right along. That being said there was some pacing issues where a paragraph would skip days and weeks at a time.
Elle is a burglar and she very good at it. On a regular night of finding her next dime she stumbles upon a crime scene though and her streak of not being caught has turned from avoiding jail time to avoiding death. She just needs to find out who is chasing her and why.
Thank you to NetGalley an E-ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Elle has a cute house she loves, a car, good friends and a career. Elle’s job is a special one that only a few of her closest friends know about. Elle is a burglar.
She has worked hard to hone her burglary skills and she is very good. She does her research, plans her jobs carefully and works with precision. She is very selective in the homes she breaks into and the items she takes. She is a professional. But even the best laid plans can often go awry.
For her next job, Elle chose a house in Beverly Hills. She has cased this home carefully and worked her plans out down to the last detail. Everything is going along according to her plan until she enters the master bedroom in the house. What she finds there is not what she expected. Instead of cash and jewelry Elle finds three dead bodies.
The first thought that hits her is to get out quickly. But as she prepares to leave the room she sees a video camera. She works her way over to the camera, shuts it off and takes it with her. She knows that the camera is evidence that the Police will need but there may be images of her on the recording.
When Elle watches the film the murder unfolds in front of her eyes. The killer does not come into the room so only a hand and gun are visible. Elle is relieved to see that her hat brim and shoe is all that shows in the recording. But she erases all evidence of her from the film. She knows she must return the camera to the scene of the crime but first she makes a copy for herself. If the Police do happen to find her then the film will prove that she was at the house after the murders took place.
Elle drives back to Beverly Hills, enters the house and puts the camera back where she got it from. Just as she is preparing to leave she hears the Police arrive. As Elle is driving away more police cars are coming in.
Safely back at home Elle hopes that this is all over now. What she doesn’t realize is it has just begun.
Suddenly Elle has become the victim. Someone is searching for her with deadly intent. Elle must find out why and who they are before they find her.
The author keeps your interest from the beginning to the end. His attention to details, surprise twists and turns make this book one you don’t want to put down.
This is my first book by this author but definitely will not be my last. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this great book.
Very interesting main character, Elle, who’s 24 years old, has been on her own for the last 10 years, and is a burglar, and is fairly accomplished at the trade. It is just her job, breaking into houses isn’t exciting and special, it’s just that inside the house is where the jewelry and money is kept, usually hidden. The plot gets very convoluted and somewhat paranoid by the end, but it’s an interesting plot.
The first three quarters of the novel are gripping and captivating, but the final quarter loses it's pacing and becomes mired in itself. Very disappointing ending to an otherwise well written and interesting novel.
The storyline was a great idea, but the ending was lacking .... I was pulled in immediately but as the story goes on I began to lose interest. Nice try but not quite want I was expecting
The Burglar is the story of Elle Stowell, a 24 year old burglar who stumbles across a triple murder during the commission of one of her crimes. She soon realizes that someone knows she was at the scene and is hunting her now, too. Elle leaves her home and moves in with her best friend, Sharon. When Sharon and her new boyfriend, Peter, wind up dead in the same manor as the orignal three, Elle knows that she must solve this case herself to prevent running, hiding and looking over her shoulder for the rest of her life. Can Elle solve it before she is murdered?
The writing and Elle's character hooked me immediately , and I enjoyed the book much more than I anticipated. At about 80 percent done, the novel started to slow and drag, becoming less about the action and adventures of Elle and more technical and heavy of art and the art industry. The ending was told by one of the characters, not lived by them, so it seemed rushed and uneventful.
I enjoy all of Perry,s books but I just couldn’t finish this one. Some of the character’s escape scenes just went on & on & on that I was skimming 10 pages at a time.
Interesting mostly. The story line makes you wonder regarding what people are actually doing behind the impressions they give.
This was an entertaining read. I liked the writing style and I enjoyed both the characters and the plot.
The Burglar by Thomas Perry was a fun read. Ellie is a burglar who stumbles upon murder. I found Ellie very likable and easy to route for in spite of her unorthodox career choice. Fun lol title murder mystery.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. It had a author well-read and very knowledgeable. Best of all I didn't find any instance of the girl getting captured or tortured. Just enough suspense to keep me reading! #TheBurglar #NetGalley
Elle Stowell is a burglar in LA who stumbles across a triple-homicide. I really wanted to like this story, but it was wordier than necessary. Additionally, most of the book is an inner dialogue with Elle and not a lot of interaction with other people. There seemed to seem to be a fair amount of repetition, too. I get the feeling the story was rushed to meet a deadline.
