I instantly fell in love with the cover of this book the second I laid eyes on it, and its punny title made me smile. I really enjoyed how Emily Albright crafted a fun storyline; however, the lack of development for the characters, romance, and romance hindered it from being a truly great read.
The writing of the story was incredibly simple, and while simple writing makes for an easy read, it read like an early rendition of someone's fanfiction rather than a final, edited piece. We are told by the author when something happens rather than having it shown to us, making the pacing feel sporadic and all over the place.
We're also shown every cliche in existence from enemies to lovers to finding the perfect dress. I personally love many of these cliche tropes, but this book has one occur every other chapter and the story became too predictable.
Perfect Harmony has the cutesy elements to be an all-star Disney movie but it leaned more towards cheesy Lifetime/Hallmark classic. Truthfully, I wish we had a greater focus on Pippa's love for music and less angsty teen drama. I really wanted to love this contemporary because it had great potential, but unfortunately, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
As a music student it was so interesting to see the competition that comes with being the top. The slow hate the love burn was definitely worth it and it was nice to be able to relate so much to a character (even if I'm sure her skills way surpass mine) - it was like reading about a friend and as the story unfolded it just got more and more touching.
Perfect Harmony speaks of two things: cuteness and music.
In fact, it is probably the embodiment of a dream my mom once had for me when I used to play the violin when I was 10-years-old. Maybe I’ve mentioned this at one point in my blogging career, who knows. She wanted me to be famous (well, actually, she still does) and as a result, I stopped playing after a year because of too much pressure to practice, practice, practice (and 10-year-old me probably didn’t care about fame more than actually enjoying the instrument itself).
But I do like the violin when I think about it! It’s such a delicate and tiny instrument making pretty music. But I digress – Perfect Harmony reminded me a lot about my orchestra memories.
Soooo What Can We Expect From Perfect Harmony?
Because that’s the most important question of them all.
Lots of music!
Pippa is super passionate about playing the cello – it’s become a part of who she is as a person, and if someone takes it away from her, it’s like they’re taking away her soul. Music to Pippa allows her to express her emotions much like words allow writers to express their emotions. There is not a page that goes by without some reference to music in Perfect Harmony.
Cuteness (or rather, a cute and fictional boy)!
Pippa’s life seems perfect until she meets her competition in the form of Declan during her senior year, who is just as good at the cello as she is and seems determined to keep her dreams as dreams. Declan is the cutest and sweetest boy ever – omg he did not deserve the harshness of his life. He’s a precious cinnamon roll, and I’ll keep him forever if Pippa ruins his soul.
Sometimes there were too many love crises.
It was hard to keep track who was attracted to who and who was pissing off who deeper into the story. I’m sorry I get confused so easily.
Friendship! Family! Siblings!
All of these play a huge role in addition to the musical competition and passion. Since a lot of the characters grew up together or watched each other grow, it was fun to see them get through all the obstacles life throws at them and find their path to each other, whatever it may be.
Writing that is meh?
The writing style is why I rated the book lower than I wanted to since I enjoyed the novel. A lot! But it was so hard to look past and see into the book itself because I just didn’t like the writing for some reason – maybe it’s just me. It is, however, easy and quick to read. It just didn’t ring well with my reading preferences.
Thank you net galley for the advance read copy this novel. I enjoyed this contemporary teen romance about two musicians. At first, they don't even want to be by the other but the romance was a slow build. The ending was expected and a few of the threads within are common with the YA genre. As a music lover, I enjoyed this novel very much and the feelings of years gone by it envoked.
I’m torn with this book. It’s not the greatest but not too bad. It’s just really cheesy and corny. I know others might feel the other way but I hate love triangles.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an Arc of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
2.5 stars
This is a cute and adorable story. There is music, friendship, family, and love. There is some good stuff here.
At the same time, Pippa annoyed me to no end. Perhaps it is personality differences or me being too old for some YA books now. While I could understand most of the drama, I thought some of it was drawn out or overdone. There were a few tropes at play here that I don't particularly like-- such as friends not talking to each other and fighting over guys, friends not being honest with each other, and ... well, snooty main characters.
The romance isn't really bad for a YA novel. The two are cute together, especially when doing music together. The other potential romance, because this is a forced love triangle, doesn't get much time to make his case and just kind of there to create drama. I wished there was more build up between both potential love interests. Of course, it is also nice when people talk about other things besides the potential love relationships.
While the main character wasn't for me, I see how people will relate with the main character's problems. If you like your books with a mix of music and boy drama then you should definitely check this one out.
Perfect Harmony is a perfect to read for young teens and young adults. It is very entertaining and engrossing as Declan and Pippa learn to harmonize on cello and in a relationship. There is a lot of stretching for Pippa’s character as she learns to adapt to challenge and learns to love alongside the challenge.
Perfect Harmony by Emily Albright was an absolute treat of a read. When I read YA, I like to think back to when I was in the target demographic. Y'all, this one spoke to the high school version of me like you would not believe. First of all, the main character in this one is Pippa who is a cellist in her high school orchestra. For those who don't know, I was all about orchestra (I play violin), so on that plot point alone I was here for this story. Then, there was the storyline of Pippa's long-time crush on her brother's friend, Noah. Noah is a jock, and without taking an unnecessary (and unwanted) trip down memory lane, the unrequited love wrapped up in this spoke to teenage me like whoa. Pippa's world is then rocked. First of all, Declan arrives. Declan is a cellist, and he's coming for Pippa's first chair status. Then, things might be changing in her relationship with Noah. Pippa now has to navigate these two men in her life while also hoping she'll get into her dream school. I cannot tell y'all how much I adored this read. It was the romantic comedy that I would have written for myself as a teen. I loved so incredibly much that the heroine was in orchestra, and I also loved that experience was so authentically written. There was a depth to the orchestra experience that isn't always in a story like this. So often they focus on the trope of the "nerd" and/or the want to be popular, and this one instead focused on centering the things Pippa loved throughout. Orch dorks don't always get love stories like this, and my heart was so happy to see this happen. Oh, and a big thank you to NetGalley for bringing this book into my life.
Unfortunately, the story starts with little to no build up. The dialog feels stilted and forced. All the characters are introduced in the first 5 pages, and none of them seem like real people. At the end of the book, we know very little about any of the characters. There is a ton of cheesy drama in every interaction, and very little depth. The writing is really obvious, no subtleties at all. The author gave lots of unmissable foreshadowing, especially with Lexie. As the story progressed I still got sucked in. I really loved Declan and I loved the connection between him and Pippa. I felt like the last 1/3 of the book forced extra drama that wasn’t necessary. We could have cut Declan having to stay in NYC and the story would have been fine. The addition of Declan being moody and not liking his dad added nothing to the story line. It felt disjointed.
I honestly didn’t want a happy ending for shallow, wishy-washy Quinn. I thought less of a Phillip for liking her. I was annoyed with how quickly Pippa moved past Declan’s heartbreaking text in to a swoony, firework ending. I mean, you take the random word of a known instigator and cut her out of your life, leaving her heart shattered for MONTHS, but it’s okay because you’re HERE now and you’re SO cute and you’re SUCH a good kisser. Seriously though, I wish I had a dollar for every time Pippa said Declan was SUCH a good kisser. In general, this book is not well written. But it’s a cute story none-the-less.
So days ago I was looking for a new book to read, usually when I don´t have any idea of what to read next and I start looking for a new book, I choose it by its cover, that is the first thing that have to catch my attention.
I was like.. yeii music, I like it so I decide to read the synopsis… And after read it, I was 100% into the book, I didn´t hesitate to request the book, I got it immediately and of course at eleven at night I started reading it.
The book catch your attention from the first couple of pages, since the beginning you find problems, drama, boys, music, and who doesn´t like that?
Yeah, Declan our Romeo of the book is awesome but, I have to admit that at the beginning I was TeamNoah, but then Declan start doing his way to my heart and now I´m TeamDeclan.. Sorry Noah!!!
Declan it´s handsome, a sexy musician, funny, passionate, smart, and he is an amazing kisser!! On the other hand we have Noah, her eternal crush, he is a beautiful blondy guy, an athletic, popular, he is funny and really cares about Pippa, our protagonist. And Pippa is our lucky girl, she is a talent cellist, she has a twin brother, Phillip that is the best friend of Noah.
The characters in this book are amazing, they are strong characters, easy to define each one, you don´t confuse them or forget their names, because they are well describe and Emily did an awesome job creating each of them..
Also I have to say that I read 70% of the book in one sit.. BUT there are things that I don´t like about this book, and that´s why I'm giving 3 stars of 5.. There are those little details, like the relation between the twins, I mean they are TWINS, they should have this awesome relation of twins, but no, they have a good relation, but just that, a relation between siblings, I feel like they do not have that "thing" that the twins usually have.
Another thing that I don´t like it, has a name, and it is Quinn, I hate her, she is the "Best Friend" of Pippa and she was a B****, I don´t think she deserves the end that she had.
And then, this is like the worst thing for me in all the book.. The author didn´t transmite me the feeling that Pippa or Declan or any of then were feeling, for example, Pippa loves her cello and it´s the most important thing for her, it is her passion, and I understand that because I´m a musician too.. but the book should make me want to be like Pippa, to have the same passion of her, I it doesn't. The book doesn't make you want to be like Pippa or be in her shoes, didn´t transmite you any feeling or emotion, especially at the end, the last ten percent of the book was really flat for me.
So this is my recommendation, if you enjoy book of musicians (but not the kind of rock stars) you may enjoy this book buuuuut if you don't like a book relate with music, I'm afraid you may not enjoy it. But anyway I DON'T regret read this book.
I received Perfect Harmony by Emily Albright from Netgalley. This has no impact on my thoughts. My thoughts are my own.
When I first saw the plot of Perfect Harmony, I was really intrigued. I was a choir student in high school so I can sort of understand band related stuff. I liked the fact that Pippa was really involved with her cellist and I liked the competition between her and Declan.
The things I didn't like were the romance and the drama between Pippa and Quinn. I didn't even like how Pippa treated her brother's best friend. I get all that is high school, but that part of the plot was a little bit standoffish for me. I still liked the book very much and just wished it had focused less on the romance part.
Perfect Harmony was a four mostly because of the misgivings mentioned above, but as a whole I thought it was a good book! Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read it.
A quick read, though I have to say that this isn't exactly what I was expecting. I wanted more about music, but the balance of the book didn't really support that all too much.
All of the characters were kind of unnecessarily sketchy. Bad friends, bad people, and having two interconnected love triangles was highkey not the best for me. Excluding triangle complications and "best friends," the dynamics of the main couple themselves were written pretty well, though I think their relationship developed a little too quickly.
Regarding the plot, the course of the book was predictably predictable, which can be nice every once in a while, and the musical tie-ins were definitely appreciated.
(I may or may not have a thing for books about music)
Overall, reading Perfect Harmony was a pretty pleasant experience, even though I did have some issues with the way things worked out.
My thanks to Netgalley and Amberjack Publishing for the ARC!
A lovely break from the all fantasy I've been reading.
The story is so cute and fluffy that I kept squealing with every interaction between the main love interest, though some parts were cliché I still love it.
The cover of Perfect Harmony is very lovely. I like the soft colors!
It's a great book with interesting characters. I liked the music theme throughout the book! It was fun and light to read, perfect for autumn. Overall, the story was good, though it was a bit predictable.
This book had a lot of potential, but I felt like the author was trying to play it safe. Everything felt muted, the personalities, the locations. I all felt less defined to give a more general, relatable feeling that wasn't entirely there. In the end, it ended up being very generic and I felt like I've read it all before. While it was light and fluffy and a fun read, I was bored at some points because it seemed so predictable. I did not always guess at parts, but I wasn't shocked at what happened either.
For once, the main character was not very irritating, but there was nothing extraordinarily likeable about her either. She had a so-so personality and is generally forgettable. The love triangle wasn't irritating, or annoying or stupid, but there wasn't really any build-up either. The struggles and the problems seemed catty and superficial and like something I've read before.
The writing was okay. It was simplistic, making it easy and enjoyable to read, but at some points, I found that I wanting more.
Lastly, I was hoping for more of a focus on music. It was there, but it was more of a subplot. I was hoping for a good battle between the main characters, I wanted them to go from enemies to lovers. I wanted a large battle and emotions that weren't muted affection. If anything fell short, it was here.
In the end, I think this is a great novel for a quick escape if you aren't looking for anything deep or original.
I love this book because I haven't read any romance like this one. Pippa, the main character, wanted to stay focus on reaching her lifetime goal and play her cello, which I love those kind of character. Then, when she saw that she has competition, she ended up pushing herself to be better, and Pippa found out that she had to do a duet with him. As a reader, it made me want to find out what happens after that moment in the book. I enjoyed the characters, the romance, and how the plot went along with the story really well.
I loved this book so much. I really needed to read a really good romance novel that has some quirk in it and I think that's it.
So well wirtten with a beautiful base for it to be built upon.
I never knew that I could love a musical instrument as much as I know adore the cello. I kinda got connected.
I loved reading about Pippa and Declan's friendhip/realtionship and I think you will too!
I instantly enjoyed this book and wondered if that feeling would continue throughout. As time went by I found that I was more into it at some points compared to others but it always stayed at an unputdownable (new word alert! 🚨😂) level.
Pippa (the main character) was very relatable which I was glad to discover as recently I haven’t had that with many books. She stuck to her guns even when the going got tough and despite worrying if she was doing the right/wrong thing she always managed to push forward and came out the other side. At times I was unsure of her and doubted her choices but I grew (alongside her in a way) to understand her viewpoint more clearly as the plot thickened.
It wasn’t too lovey-dovey and that helped a lot as with that being the main focus of the book it had to be done just right in order for the reader to not be baying for Declan, the love interests, blood with the amount of time she could have gone on about him 😂 It was kept at an entertaining level especially with Noah, Pippa’s long-term crush added to the mix (I was unsure how to take him as at times I felt sorry for him but then I saw that he doesn’t really know what he wants so can’t really expect others to aswell).
As I mentioned above, I was more into it at some points compared to others and in these moments I felt like it was dragging a little bit and I’d say to myself “I know how this is going to end so why can’t it just get there already!” but then it picked up, stuff started to happen and I understood why we had to take the longer route round (as readers) to reach the expected result.
Although occasionally it got to be predictable as soon as I acknowledged this fact the story caught me and threw in something I hadn’t seen coming. When I had no idea what was going to happen next, I held onto the fact that with these kinds of books there wasn’t exactly going to be an unhappy ending was there? (did I just reveal a massive spoiler? You already knew that anyway because great minds think alike! 💫….without even having read it on your side yet too 🤔😂).
Friendships were tested, relationships both shrank and blossomed at exceedingly fast rates and our main protagonist, Pippa, learnt a lot about herself and what her hopes and goals should encompass all while staying true to her self.
It’s a very lighthearted, easygoing romance filled book which I know can turn off some readers from wanting it on their shelves but I want to jump in there before you might decide to make that brash decision and say give it a go because at times we all want a refreshing read planted in between our usual jaunts. That being said I would recommend it to everyone and anyone who likes carefree yet predictable stories (because we want to know where we are in life sometimes so let a good book do it for you! 😂).
Sweet YA romance with realistic and believable characters and a good, strong premise. I enjoyed the story and the competition between the two characters. This is a good, clean book for teens with enough depth of character and story to make it more than a light, fluff story.
This was darling. I loved Albright's first two books, so was eagerly awaiting this one, though it is completely different. This is a super sweet YA romance, and I really enjoyed it. I loved all the characters and really wanted to know what happened next after the book ended. Hopefully we see more in this world.
