I received this book in exchange for an honest review, which has not altered my opinion of this book.
This was not one of my favorite books. Humor and satire books are very hit and miss with me, mostly due to the fact that I either understand the book and appreciate the humor or I don't get it/get annoyed with it. This book was for sure one that I ended up getting annoyed with. There were so many face-palm moments and so many times that I groaned out loud at the humor many a time but sadly not in a good way.
Honestly, I am almost surprised that I wanted to finish this book, but there was something captivating about it that made me want to finish the story. I guess it might have been the impending possibility that they would all die in some random way. This is not a ya book but was still approachable and if you want something super light and humorous with face-palm moments, this is a book for you. Unfortunately, this was not a book for me. 2.5 out of 5 from me.
Clever Nonsense with a Don Quixote Vibe
This is a cheerfully inane book that scores its best laughs when it isn't trying too hard to be funny.
Our setup is that we have a feckless knight and a long suffering squire who wander into a dangerous and pointless sidequest in a dark mine. The plot has the squire constantly advising caution and the knight cluelessly rushing into peril. None of that was especially novel. But, the fun is in the cross-talk between the two, with some very clever wordplay and deadpan one-liners.
About a third of the way into the book, and the mine, I thought that pattern was starting to wear thin. Fortunately, at that point a tough as nails half-human half-ogre paladin shows up to straighten out, guide, and protect the two lost heroes, and she gets all the best lines from there on out.
I was happy to go along with the gang for the rest of the tale, and there were plenty of amusing bits sprinkled along the trail. This was a fun find.
