This was my first book from this author. I really enjoyed this book. I will try and read more from this author. I was hooked and really liked the ride reading this book
I haven’t been to Paris. Yet. But after reading Fromage àTrois by Victoria Brownlee I more than ever feel this urge to visit the city and eat as much cheese as I can. And probably not drink as much champagne as I could.
Mostly I read fantasy, sci fi and horror stories but when I saw that this book is about Paris I thought why not, I will give it a try. And what a book. I thoroughly enjoyed the adventures of Ella. I laughed and cried with her.
Ella moves to Paris after breaking up with her longtime boyfriend and moves to Paris. There she explores cheese and finds love. I liked the other characters pretty much too.
The plot is nothing too complicated or new but it was exactly just what I needed.
I received an ARC of this from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I never knew there were so many french cheeses! Every time I picked this book up to read it, it never failed to give me cravings for wine and cheese. It was a cute, short, romance novel. I really enjoyed the descriptions of Paris, the cheese dialogue and of course Ella's character. Ella has some serious guts just packing up and leaving Australia to go to Paris. Not to mention, she's pretty feisty, I LOVED the email she sent back to her ex.
This was a nice break is my usual pattern of books. It was easy to read and I enjoyed the ending.
What an addictive read that made me devour cheese immediately and during reading this book! I loved the location of the story taking place in Paris. If your looking for a culture, fictional, world romance grab this book!
This book draw my attention right from the start with the name and cover. Reading the description and knowing it was set in Paris and that was about a girl close to her thirties, only added to my wanting to read the book.
Of course, the cheese part seemed strange at first, but along the pages as the story progresses, that part becomes unique and quite interesting.
The story is easy to read, it is funny, riveting and has a great pace. I really liked Ella, her character was complex and her way to think was very amusing. Serge was a lovely character as well, and I liked Clothilde and Billie as Ella’s best friends.
In this book, we get to see Ella managing living in Paris on her own; a new life with a whole new set of opportunities. Nevertheless, of course, things get complicated along the way… It was nice reading about her worries and I felt related to most of them (also, I would love to live in Paris for a year!). I loved reading about Paris, its cheese and wine (and it left me starving a bit every time I read about it). I kind of liked how it doesn’t focus the regularly covered places in Paris, even though I adore Paris and its beautiful, tourist sites, I also enjoyed reading about other places in the book.
In addition, I appreciated that the book was not just about romance but also about taking chances, finding yourself and about friendship. Overall, I deeply enjoyed the story and had a very good time reading it.
Adorable title with a compellingly cute story and a reminder that I love cheese exactly as the French do!
What a FUN read. I am such a fan of chick lit/Romance and this book just nailed it. From the heroine's adventures in France, cheese tasting descriptions, to the adorable heartwarming romance, I loved every page of this novel. I read it really quickly, and you know that's the sign of a great novel. It was the first book in a long time where I fell in love with the classic "unlikely love interest" and cheered them along in their love story in a way I haven't done in a book for quite some time. The quirky characters were super lovable. I highly recommend this book!
Ella has been with Paul for a good number of years. She thinks he is finally going to propose, but instead he says he is going on a quest "to find himself". Of course, Ella is flummoxed and devastated. She decides she is going to take a big leap into an adventure of her own. She quits her job in Melbourne, Australia, takes her savings out of the bank and heads for Paris. Even though she knows very little French, she is confident she is beginning a new, exciting phase of her life.
The "fromage" in the title fits very well since Ella becomes enchanted with French cheese after finding a lovely cheese shop with a helpful owner named Serge. The reader truly learns a lot about French cheese as Ella experiences a multitude of varieties and even accepts a cheese challenge.
Author Victoria Brownlee fully develops the characters in this charming novel. She is a food writer, too, and that shows as she describes food, wine and cheeses so you can almost taste them.
Ella's journey is not just one of dealing with lost love, but of discovering new skills and confidence. There is romance, but embracing a new culture, despite the "fish out of water" feeling is Ella's biggest achievement.
The author has written an uplifting novel that will entertain readers and perhaps encourage them to try new things out of their comfort zones.
I am not a big chick lit reader and this book is every bit chick lit and not much else except a sincere devotion to cheese.
Ella, misreads every sign, gets dumped by her boyfriend and disintegrates to a whining, sniveling, mess. Leaving Melbourne, Australia she lands in Paris intent on becoming something, I am just not sure what. She makes many more bad choices, informs the reader all about her sex life and makes a few more bad choices. There is some humor, but many more cringeworthy moments and who I can eat that much cheese and not become lactate intolerant?!
Obviously not the book for me but I thank NetGalley and Amberjack Publishing for a copy.
I really enjoyed this book. I’m glad I had the opportunity to read it. The story is good. The book is well written.
What's not to like about this book? I loved everything about this book!
Fromage à Trois was an absolute delight, filled with cheese, humor, romance, and all things French. For a debut novel, I have to say that I am very impressed.
*****
The story revolves around Ella, a 29-year-old, whose boyfriend of 8 years suddenly decides to go on a retreat in Thailand to find himself, unsure of where their relationship is headed. She's left with no choice but to break up with him. Feeling dejected and hurt, Ella books a one-way ticket to Paris looking for a fresh start. We follow her on her adventures while living in France.
The writing complements the story with detailed descriptions of Paris and authentic dialogue. The characters were diverse and I enjoyed the whole cast. Ella as the main character was well drawn and highly relatable. The author portrays her so vividly that the reader could easily imagine themselves in Paris with her.
The characters are brilliantly crafted to feel real and consistent. They were sympathetic, funny, likeable and quirky. Ella’s friend Billie—and her voice-of-reason—is adorable. Her colleague at Flat White, Chris, is funny—what with his obsession with French women. Clotilde, ever the quintessential Parisienne, was a very good friend and housemate. I loved how their friendship developed as the book progressed. Serge, a cheese connoisseur —and owner of the fromagerie, which Ella frequents—was very likeable.
Then there’s Ella’s former weird housemates, an elderly French woman who still lives her 40-year old son. Gatson is a handsome narcissistic and a jerk, and Ella’s ex, Paul will make your blood boil.
The descriptions of France and the food were evocative and I came away from the book knowing a great deal about French cheese; their origin, texture, and more. You could almost smell the aroma of cheese emanating from Serge's cheese shop.
Fromage à Trois is a fun, entertaining read that is perfect for an afternoon curled up on the sofa with a hot chocolate, or with a glass of Vin de Paille 🍷and a slice of Comté. I highly recommend to everyone.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Amberjack Publishing, and Victoria Brownlee for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
My Thoughts
‘I’d relearn how to live life as a solo adventurer. I’d take things as they came and make up a plan on the way.’
‘Fromage à Trois’ is worthy chick lit - lighthearted and entertaining. It’s a tale about Ella escaping to Paris after her dreams of marriage did not come to pass and her ensuing journey to rediscover herself. Many a cliched story like this has been told, so what invites the reader to this particular version?
‘... the makers of the cheese had known that I would move to Paris to mourn a breakup. It was as though they’d anticipated that I would start to fill the void in my broken heart with French cheese.’
Well ... we’ll always have Paris ;) One never really tires of a fictional journey to wander the streets of this city. Add into this an incredible and delectable selection of cheeses and this book really does provide that something different to this genre. The Instagram cheese journey is really something different and enlightening. Then there is a solid array of characters to make life interesting in Ella’s new venture. Overall, this is worthwhile writing and reading. Of course there are some moments that are cringe worthy and just drag the story down a bit but I try to overlook that and instead enjoy brief escapism on this whimsical and rather decadent ‘cheesy’ journey.
“Can you please write the name of the cheese and where it came from on a piece of paper for me?” I asked. “I’m interested in learning more about French cheese.”
This is a tale that will leave you with a good feeling - characters that engage you and an introduction to Parisian fromageries! You will be given a little of everything - romance, deceit, anguish and laughter - a little of everything except cheese! There is more of that than you can imagine!
“So what is it with you, Paris and cheese?”
This book was really enjoyable for me. I love the setting and how detailed everything was. The main character annoyed me at times but other then that there’s no complaints from me.
What's not to love about cheese and Paris? Right from the title I knew this would be a fun read, little did I realize I'd want to kick some of the characters and help Ella power on. It was full of laughs and dramatic moments. Great read!
Very likable book - almost too likeable - and it didn't resonate with me. Love the cover, the clever title, and the premise. The story, however, moved a little too slowly for me. And I just don't know enough about Paris to connect with so much of what was going on.
This book is perfect for chic travelers who think of Paris as a second home or well-read francophiles who admire the City of Lights from afar. It'll be the perfect frothy read for so many people, but I wasn't one of them.
Thank you to Net Galley and the author for granting my request for an ARC.
After horrible break-up, Ella decides to move to Paris for a year to drink wine and eat cheese. Funny and charming and heart-warming, This was a fun, charming read about a young Australian woman who takes off to spend a year in Paris, and ends up devoting herself to researching and tasting cheese.
Fromage à Trois was a fun, lighthearted read. I enjoyed Ella's journey to finding love and herself. Brownlee's descriptions of food, particularly cheese, were fun and left my stomach growling. In all, it was a great break from heavier topics and I loved ending my day seeing how Ella's life was changing.
Paris, Food, Cheese.
Need I really say more? seriously?
The name of the book itself should make you want to read this book.
A very enjoyable read. Fromage a Trois is a breath of fresh air... it makes you feel like you've taken a journey right alongside Ella. You feel like you are experiencing every single thing Ella does and my lord is it good.
Like I said, Paris. Food. Cheese...... Need I say more? lol
Title: Fromage à Trois
Author: Victoria Brownlee
Genre: Fiction, romance
Rating: 4 out of 5
Ella and Peter have been together 8 years and she’s expecting a proposal. What she gets is Peter telling her he’s off to find himself—and he never intended to marry her. With her heart broken, Ella decides to move to Paris for a year. Her French is questionable, and she doesn’t know a soul there, but she knows a change will do her good.
In Paris, Ella wanders into a fromagerie—a cheese shop—and ends up in a bet with Serge, the owner, that she can’t eat 365 kinds of cheese in a year. In between washing dishes at a coffee shop, she explores the city, works on her French, and meets a dashing French man.
Ella is torn between the two sides of life and Paris, and she’ll have to decide if her dreams will ever live up to reality.
This was a fun read. I might have wanted to slap Ella couple of times, but her adventures made me laugh. I can’t imagine just moving to another country for a year, so I admire that, and the cheese made me drool!
Victoria Brownlee is a writer and editor from Australia who now lives in France. Fromage à Trois is her first published novel.

I really liked this book. It’s very funny, and I found the characters to be very likeable. The Paris described in the book is one I would love to visit. I’m not a great cheese eater but I think if you are, then you might be tempted to do,some cheese shopping after reading this book.
