We all wish to be more mindful, engaged, present – loving the life we are living, but is this possible and how? You Are Not Your Thoughts: The Secret Magic of Mindfulness makes the journey into a mindful way of being a profoundly simple one, both to understand and to access. It is a book for those who want to truly know the power of mindfulness to transform their experience of life.
Self help books usually scare me. But this one didn’t. I think the book was strong and filled with strong ideas on how to train your brain to be stronger, to have stronger concepts, and to help you avoid negative thoughts.
This book is a great introduction on mindfulness and meditation and approaches the subject in a way that is attainable for any reader to take on the challenge. Another great idea would to be to utilize the Oak app to meditate after having read this book.
This book isn’t long. It’s pretty short but still packs a detailed punch on the concept of mindfulness.
I’m glad I discovered the book. While brief, it’s strong and provides a great opportunity for any reader to learn more. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about mindfulness or meditation or wants a new perspective.
I found the book to be practical and insightful., filled with nuggets on how to train your mind to think positive and live a productive life avoiding the pitfalls that negative thinking. A must read.
A good, solid introduction to mindfulness and meditation. This book is short and sweet and easy to follow. I found it really helpful with anxiety and depression. I’m an over thinker and learning to be in the moment and mindful is taking lots of practise.
I’d recommend this book for teenagers and adults. The fact that it’s not a long book is a positive thing. There’s enough information to start you off and keep you going.
Thank you to #netgalley and John Hunt publishing for the ARC.
This book was a happy surprise. I've read a lot of books on meditation and mindfulness, and often they are trite and too distant from real life. You Are Not Your Thoughts, however, is simple, both in its brevity and it's language. It feels like Trussell is just chatting with you, talking about things she's learned and wisdom she's gained. Definitely recommend this book to anyone new to mindfulness but would also recommend to anyone who wants a refresher.
A great concise introduction to mindfulness and how to separate ourselves from our thoughts. Although, it is a very quick read it is packed with insights and tips for incorporating mindfulness into our everyday life. It removes the mystery from mindfulness meditation, is written in straightforward language and bite-sized chunks, so is suitable for everyone.
I will definitely recommend this book to anybody who is curious about or new to mindfulness.
I have to admit this book was a lot shorter than I thought it would be. I would definitely recommend this as a good introduction to mindfulness and meditation. I'm was looking for something a little more in depth so it didn't have a ton of impact on me. Although it's always good to read over the basic concepts of mindfulness.
I loved this book,I felt very peaceful reading it and loved that it helped with managing your emotions through being present, although I have read many similar books for help with this,I felt through the simplicity of the writing in this book, something clicked for me and it made sense. Many thanks to the Author,Publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this wonderful gem.
This is not so much a book as it is a series of how to posters pulled together. The format was a bit tough for me to get over. The content was fine enough, all very common sense, but nothing I haven't read before. Perhaps some will find the way the author has laid out the concepts helpful, but I didn't find anything particularly new or useful.
"Thoughts are in your head, Feelings are in your body."
At only 104 pages, this book is a fast read about being mindful, meditating, and present in your life. What I liked is that the language is straight forward and in layman's terms. I don't think there is any new information presented, but this book does present the information in a very succinct way. Everything makes sense and one section of the book flows nicely into the next.
"Mindfulness is... the art of paying attention."
Many people talk about meditation, being mindful and for some that may be confusing. How does one meditate? What are the steps to letting go of repetitive thoughts, racing thoughts or to simple calm our minds? Being mindful and meditation is all the rage these days, but it has been around for a long, long time. I remember when I first starting hearing about meditation and asked someone I knew who meditated to describe meditation to me. His response was basically, that mediating was just that meditation. Which led me to ask but how do you meditate? and his response was you know, by meditating. UGH! You will not get his type of response in this book. Instead the author talks about counting the in and out breaths as a way of keeping you in the moment and not letting other thoughts in. It helps discipline the mind to focusing on the present and just breathing rather than all the thoughts that pop into one's mind. This is one of the examples she gives in the book of being mindful and how to quiet your mind.
"Meditation help you focus on the now so that this can then be carried through to the rest of your life. It sets you intention to be mindful and reminds us how refreshing this can be. Plus, it has many health benefits."
The Author does not get into the health benefits in this short book but focuses on thoughts and how we get used to thinking about certain things repeatedly. She encourages readers to deal with or face the events in our lives and not to spend too much time thinking about them.
This book has some great tips and exercises for those new to meditation and being mindful. For those who are more knowledgeable on the subject, this will reinforce what is already known. I like that the Author is to the point and does not rely on flowery language or repetition.
Thank you to John Hunt publishing and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
There is very little here that hasn't been covered a million times over by all over the other meditation books. The author seems nice but I struggle with that being enough.
I would like to thank both NetGalley and John Hunt Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read ‘You Are Not Your Thoughts’ in exchange for my honest unbiased review.
This is a self help book on mainly mindfulness what it is and how to embrace it into your life.
It is very easy to read and also enjoyable too.
I have read many self books and none have made such an impact as this one.
This book is ideal for young adults and adults.
I was wrong. On first reading this book could have been considered over-simplistic, but having got to the end, that would be really unfair. Why? Because for once this gem of a book is not full of padding, fluff, repetitive writing or rubbish. Neither does it claim to cure world hunger or be something it isn't.
It is concise, well written and to the point. But still comprehensive, whilst encouraging the reader to delve deeper into the issues, subjects and techniques it describes. Really, the author should be congratulated on a superbly written book.
I loved it, and reading it again to get the best from it. and actually have started to implement the practical tips - how often can you say that about a book!
Coming in November, You Are Not Your Thoughts: the Secret Magic of Mindfulness by Frances Trussell. I am a big fan of self-help books, I feel like its good to always be learning and growing as a person. I’m always excited to get some tools in my emotional arsenal on how to look at things and process situations.
This book will help with mindfulness which usually results in a calm state of mind.

I will be ready this one in the very near future and look forward to gaining some insight on helping my anxious mind.
“You are not your thoughts” by Frances Trussell is a short, but thought provoking on mindfulness. I really think this book will help me with my anxiety. Look forward to using the tools put forth in Trussell’s book. Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for this Advanced Reader Copy a
Thoughts are things and we must be careful with them. Desiring to be proficient in mindset mastery, I have been scouring the bookstores for texts on the very topic of thoughts and mindfulness. Enter Frances!
With detailed advice, tips, and instructions, this little book gave me the information I have been searching for.
Highly recommend for readers who enjoyed The Power of the Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy and The Game of Life by Florence Scovel Shinn.
Mindfulness is ‘in’ and everyone is seeking for the best way to be devoid of stress. This book is good for breaking down what you’re actually trying to achieve and why.
I enjoyed this quick read, for all of its valuable insight and tools for living in the now. To be fair, I just read it so I haven't had a lot of time to put into practice the authors suggestions but I definitely look forward to seeing what progress is made. Suffering from anxiety, I know that my doctors have encouraged this form of treatment but I've been a tad reluctant. This book breaks it down very simply and efficiently making it a lot less overwhelming than many books I have read on the subject. Being overwhelmed is a huge struggle in my life so the way it is presented is just as important as the subject matter, its the spoon full of sugar approach that makes me rate this book as high as I have.

'You Are Not Your Thoughts' by Frances Trussell is a quick and easy guide on mindfulness. Unlike other books on this topic, ‘You Are Not Your Thoughts’ describes what being mindful really is and how you can achieve it...yes, you! What’s unique about this book is that it is written using simple language and page long chapters that easily flow into the next. For example, a counting breath meditation is followed by a chapter that discusses the discouragement we can feel when attempting to meditate, which is then followed by a chapter on the breath. Most books tend to brush past the time and patience that learning something new will take, but Frances Trussell makes a point to be honest and upfront about how learning mindfulness is a journey that requires us to unlearn a lot of things. Her words of encouragement and explanation of how mindfulness will change your life are needed in a time when most authors make mindfulness sound like an exclusive rite of passage. Mindfulness doesn’t have to be a complicated ritual or practiced in a yoga studio. Mindfulness is so easy it can be done in anyplace at anytime by anyone. If you’re looking for a manual on how to do it, this is the one!
This book brings mindfulness back to the basics. Simply enjoying a hot cup of tea, noticing your breath, and finding a reason to smile everyday are all ways to detach from your thoughts. It’s this simplicity that is the secret magic of mindfulness.
This brief book is a lovely addition to materials already available on the topic of mindfulness. If I was a beginner to the subject, this would likely have gone over my head a bit. Since I already have a firm grasp on the concept, it resonated with me in a strong way and provided a few tips I had not seen elsewhere. The writing is almost lyrical and I'd get into a rhythm while reading that was relaxing on its own. The author puts a big emphasis on the importance of meditation in a mindful life, and provides several exercises. I appreciate the kind tone and straightforward writing style.
This is a wonderful book on mindfulness that explains it very well and shows you how to do it easily. I enjoyed this book. I recommend it to anyone interested in mindfulness.
