Another great Charlie Gallagher novel. Really enjoy following George as he works to solve his cases. Great development of the personal life angle within this novel too
Her Last Breath is the type of book that you simply can't put down. It, at times, gave me "Silence of the Lambs" vibes in terms of the serial killer, Henry Robert's, and the police detective pursuing him. Detective George Elms is an interesting character, torn between his career and his family, and this bit of humanity makes you root for him even more. Overall, I highly recommend this novel.
I was drawn in by the first page. Great storyline and characters you could connect to. Lots of other books to read in this series but you can read them as standalones.
This was another killer read by a very talented author. I have read some of mr Gallagher's work in the past, so I knew what to expect. I did however not expect to be thrilled from beginning to end. Recommended.
A very well written suspense book. Kept me captivated from the start to the exciting conclusion. A bit gruesome at times but enjoyable read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Jorge Books for letting me read this one in exchange for my honest review! This was my first book by this author but definitely won't be my last. This book was such a fast paced, action packed thriller that I did not want to put down, I kept wanting more. This is for sure a page turner and you will not be disappointed. I definitely recommend this one!.
Thankyou to NetGalley, Joffe Books and the author, Charlie Gallagher, for the opportunity to read a digital copy of Her Last Breath in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.
I struggled to finish this book unfortunately. I found the storyline on the slow side and could not connect with the characters. Not a book for me.
I didn’t enjoy the writing style and I didn’t like any of the characters. There seems to be a lot of loose ends and the fact that the author had to explain the ending just makes it even worse, like a bad indie cop film.
There were few entertaining actions bits, that’s why I gave it 2 stars rather than 1.
I would like to thank Joffe Books and the Netgalley website for this partnership.
I've been wanting to read it for a long time, that's it. I was immediately attracted by the blanket and we see a young woman from behind who seems to be looking towards the forest.
It all began when serial killer Henry Roberts was sentenced to life imprisonment, his type of wife: young and attractive blondes. He is about to die, he wants to be moved to the sea and tell the police where the remains of the bodies he hid are. Except that the police will find out that he was not doing this alone, and one day a woman disappears and then a second one. Time is running out for the police.
A thriller that I found captivating, full of suspense and twists and turns. I immediately became hooked on the story. Looking forward to reading another book by this author.
3.5 stars: I could tell very early on that this was not going to be a "run of the mill" thriller. The plot elements that drive this novel are anything but formulaic and the characters are relatable and likable (except for Henry Roberts, obviously, who evokes the sensation of being surrounded by pure evil). George is not another grizzled cop with an axe to grind. Emma is not the weaker, grating partner. It is clear the author gave due diligence to giving the readers everything they would need to like these characters, to root for them, and to follow them on an intense, captivating roller coaster of a journey.
There were some elements to this story that stalled out a bit. The book, as a whole, became a bit unrelatable and unbelievable once elements of the villain came to light. However, the main characters were perfect and I would look forward to reading additional books with these two as protagonists.
The story was well thought-out and exciting, fast-paced and full of just the right kind of emotion and suspense. I did not want to put this book down.
I had a hard time getting into this one. I couldn't mesh with the characters, which left me feeling disinterested.
A thrilling and captivating book, it has an intense and engrossing storyline with awesome characters, which set the intriguing pace of this book. A fascinating read which grips your attention and mind, by drawing you into it’s inviting and intensely gripping pages. Truly a mind twister with riveting hold from the first chapter, it drags you along forcefully whether you want to go or not, you can't help it, you just gotta go along until you reach the end the last page. A truly entertaining package well-written and interesting, a worthwhile inclusion to any library, a must read.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book it was an emotional rollercoaster full of twists that I didnt see coming. It was fast paced and kept me engaged all the way through the book. A very cleverly written story and I didnt see that ending coming at all! Very well deserved 5 stars a cracking good read.
A great book with a clever twist at the end. This was my first introduction to Charlie Gallagher but I have already looked up more books by him as I was so impressed with this one. I gather from other reviews that this is part of a series. I didn't feel I'd missed anything from not having read the others but I definitely plans to read them. There are some dark, chilling and graphic descriptions of the crime scenes -not one for the faint hearted! It was a little bit slow to start but once it gets going, it's hard to stop reading.
I would have LOVED to read this book, but it disappeared from my shelf before I had chance. I won't give it one star for that, though, as it is neither the author's fault nor fair.
This book kept me hooked and threw me for a loop at the end! A gripping story that will keep you turning the page.
O.K., so I'm a sick freaking beeyatch. I kinda liked this book. A lot! Would I have lubbed this book a week ago? Please, who knows. And so are the days of our lives. This is an author I will be reading again. Seriously, I need more Charlie Gallagher in my life...or in my kindle! Again, as I always forget, my thanks to Netgalley, and the publishers for the arc. Seriously dudes, of course I forget, but I'm not here to remember the free galleys, I'm here for the stories. Just saying.
I had been wanting to read this book for a while but had to read other books that I had promised to review for other blog tours so it took me longer than I would normally take to get to this one – and now I’ve read it I can honestly say that is was so worth the wait!!
I loved the plot line and the story was one that completely gripped me, so addictive and I needed to keep reading right to the end, finishing the book in the early hours of the morning. The character development was completely on point and I loved their interaction as the story progressed.
The writing style was brilliant as I have come to expect from this author and I am already looking forward to his next release.
An absolutely cracking thriller – 5 stars from me – loved it!!
Henry Roberts is a huge man; he is also a convicted serial killer who is dying of cancer. He reaches out to the police with a deal - let him die in a cell with a sea view and he will tell them where the bodies of his last two victims are. Detective George Elms is the officer who reluctantly becomes Roberts' messenger, looking back at the closed case as the impossible request becomes a reality. What he finds is evidence that Roberts didn't work alone ... and then another woman goes missing.
Thanks to Netgalley I was able to read an advanced copy of this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Charlie Gallagher doesn't pull any punches in his description of the crime scenes nor does he shy away from the effect the case has had on the detectives who first dealt with it. He takes the reader through the beautiful Welsh countryside, the valleys and the peacefulness and then slams them back into the depravity which has tainted the very ground he stands on.
I found the whole story to be easy to read even though the crimes were horrendous and all the characters suffered because of them. I liked George and although he grated on his colleagues he knew it, apologised and still got the job done.
Detective Inspector George Elms knew that he should have said no,he should have said that he was busy, that he had paperwork to do,that he was taking his daughter to the park or the zoo.He should have just put his foot down and refused to go but Major John Whittaker made it sound like a simple task.Just go to the prison, get serial killer Henry Roberts to sign a piece of paper and then leave, job done, end of story. But George should have known that nothing involving John Whittaker ever goes as planned. Henry Roberts decides that George is going to be the first police officer that he is going to communicate with since his arrest more than three years ago.George swiftly finds himself over two hundred miles from home, caught up in a complex, frustrating case involving missing girls, torture devices and a evil puppet master who seems to be able to control George's every more as easily as a puppeteer controls a puppet on a string.
Yay,George is back, doing what George does best, sticking his size tens in where they are not wanted and generally rubbing people up the wrong way. This time he finds himself staying in a rental cottage in the small English village of Symonds Yat on the Welsh border.A gorgeous, tranquil sounding place that lay among steep, dramatic hills and had the river Wye running through the middle. It also happened to be the village where Henry Roberts grew up and the home of one of the latest missing girls.George unsurprisingly soon finds himself butting heads with DI Emma Rowe who was in charge of the original investigation into Henry Roberts crimes.Emma isn't interested in George's theories that the latest missing girl is all part of a bigger plan.Emma got on my nerves and I could easily understand George's feelings of frustration and anger over her attitude and stubbornness.Fortunately George could always rely on Emily Ryker`s help with the investigation as well her usual sarcasm and witty comments.Unfortunately we found out quite early in the story who had abducted the girls and there was chapters voiced by this person interspersed throughout the story as well as a few chapters voiced by the missing girl from Symonds Yat.The person who has abducted the girls is a twisted, evil psychopath but why have they been abducted and will George be able to find them before time runs out?
In stark contrast to the stunning settings where some of the scenes are set,the descriptions of the crimes that Henry Roberts was convicted for are dark, disturbing and spine chilling. This is a gripping, well written thriller that holds the readers attention throughout and has a surprising, twist ending.Sadly this is the last George Elms thriller. Goodbye George,I'm going to miss you.
