I really enjoyed this book and the entire series. The premise is one of the coolest I ever read.
A world renowned cat burglar falls in love with a British billionaire after she safed his life, while breaking into his Florida mansion. That alone is awesomeness!!!!! And ever since reading the first book, Samantha and Richard have been one of my most favorite couples yet.
Throughout the series, there has been growth in regards to characters as well as their relationships. Samantha and Richard had to learn how to compromise and adjust to each other's life and to make space for the other. They learned how to life together and to trust each other, especially in regards to Samantha's past. Samantha opened up to Rick, acknowledge her feelings and finally allowed them to surface. I loved how very mature both characters were in these instances. And even though it wasn't easy, they were willing to put the time and effort into a relationship that could explode into their face any day. And I loved that both always were willing to talk and never to walk away without cleaning the air first.
I loved their banter. Both were incredibly smart and savvy, which is one of the reasons they were attracted to each other. They were always one step ahead of everyone and it was a pleasure seeing them do what they did best. Rick making money, and Sam getting into mischief. And the way they always had each other's back was heartwarming and utterly addicting.
In Barefoot in the Dark, Sam and Rick were on "vacation", at his Scottish ancestral home, to meet his relatives. The slower pace of the Scottish country side didn't bother Samantha at all. She found excitement in cataloging artwork, and hunting down a hundreds year old treasure. The additional ghost hunting spiced up the rather quiet and slower country life to everyone's, but especially Samantha's delight.
I found Barefoot in the Dark to be an utterly entertaining and charming novel in a series that I absolutely adore. Honestly, it's hard to convey how happy I am that the author decided to pick up this series again. Barefoot in the Dark had all the characteristics I love in a contemporary mystery novel. Strong characters, a mature and self-confident main couple, a fabulous supporting cast, a charming Scottish landscape and its quriky inhabitants and a plot that moved along splendidly and was never boring.
I'm so looking forward to the next book.
I haven’t read this series before or even realized this was a series so obviously I need to go back and read the previous ones because this was amazing. Without spoiling anything Sam and Rick goes for a trip to what Samantha things is England but they are going to middle of nowhere Scotland. They get to be away from the paparazzi and she meets his family. This was amazing. Loved it! Thank you for letting me review this!
Will add link when review posts.

Rick faced her. "How often do prisons allow conjugal visits?"
"Not often enough for you. I can pretty much guarantee that."
He stuck a finger into the belt of her jeans and tugged her close. "Then let's avoid that, shall we?"
Last time readers spent time with Sam and Rick was way, way, way back in 2007 with the release of A Touch of Minx, which was book 5 in the Samantha Jellicoe series. If you aren't familiar with this awesome contemporary, romantic suspense series Samantha is a former thief/cat burglar/current security specialist who fell in love with billionaire Englishman Rick Addison after being hired to rob him. That was five books ago. These days Sam and Rick are getting used to settling down and living a less adventurous life on the right side of the law.
After talking down Sam from climbing the walls of his estate, trying to escape the paparazzi, Rick decides they need some time away from everyone. This might be a good time to introduce her to his family. So he whisks them away to his eight hundred year old castle in the wilds of Scotland. The estate is crumbling down and definitely needs a whole lot of updating, and Rick's family is... kind of difficult, but Rick is certain Sam will enjoy herself. Maybe. Hopefully.
I kind of wondered how easy it would be to jump right back into this world after being away from it for so long, but I shouldn't have. Right from page one I kind of fell back in love with Rick and Sam and their back and forth banter. This story was so easy to read. There's a mystery for Sam to dive into, lots of time spent with Rick's family, plenty of Rick and Sam navigating the ins and outs of their relationship and some damn fine sexy times. All in all, a lovely reunion with one of my favorite couples.
If you feel like diving into a great romantic suspense series, this one is so much fun.
Sam Jellicoe reformed cat burglar and Rick Addison need to visit his castle in Scotland to get away from the press.
The family castle may be haunted and we even have the mystery of buried highwayman treasure. Throw in a cousin who won’t let the treasure go and you have a blend of romance and action. This book reunites Sam and Rick in a new romantic crime thriller.
I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Great story. Hidden treasures. What's not to love. Great story from start to finish. Didn't want to put it down. Loved these characters. Had me hooked from the beginning.
Great story. I love the haunted house storyline. Samantha really is adjusting well to her life with stealing priceless jewels and artwork.
After a 10 year hiatus, romance author Suzanne Enoch is back with a new edition to her Samantha Jellicoe (and Richard Addison) series two weeks after she left off of her last novel. It was a delight to see characters come to life again on the page after so long a time. It was interesting to see how Enoch dealt with the time jump from 2007 to 2018, but in book time only two weeks actually passed for the characters.
In Barefoot in the Dark Richard’s personality develops more and we meet the last remains of his nuclear family, while also beginning to understand the lack of closeness that the Addison’s share. We also finally learn how Richard’s parents died, something that had irked me since the first book for having not been mentioned— I also feel like these personal details are important for the character’s and their history and the reader really struggles with believing in the character’s development because of this stunted growth. The nonexistent explanation of Samantha’s mother also is filed under this header. There were also redundancies that come up in this novel that were also featured in this novels predecessors such as Samantha’s fear of Richard’s defection and Richard’s fear of Samantha’s fleeing.
Enoch takes us on a fun romp in the Highlands of Scotland while pressing history, ghosts, and treasure-hunting into the bag. It really was a delight to see Samantha and Richard back together again after so long, something I know I lamented throughout this review, but I really mean it.
Since Barefoot in the Dark ended without an epilogue, there will most likely, hopefully, be another book.
Please Suzanne, do not make us wait this long—another 10 years—for the next addition to the series. Because every one of your contemporary series fans wishes for a happily ever after finish for the Jellicoe-Addison duo that includes marital bliss and babies galore.
As requested, any ARC I am given gets my fair and honest review. Suzanne Enoch has such a great writing style. Witty and intriguing with characters that you love. This is another of those stories. Mystery, haunted castle and people. I think you will enjoy it the same as I did.
I stumbled upon Suzanne Enoch's work in the dead of winter and quickly became a huge fan of her Rick and Samantha series. I read through the series and settled in to wait for the next installment. These books contain a great cast of characters, a sexy British man, a brilliant cat burglar and mystery. Barefoot in the Dark is a wonderful addition to the series.
When the press closes in on Rick and Sam they run off to a castle in Scotland where life is quiet and the press won't think to look for them. Here we see Samantha out of her element due to the pastoral setting as well as not only meeting Rick's closest living relatives, but actually having to play hostess for an extended time.
If you love books by J.D. Robb, or Marie Force you are sure to love this series by Enoch.

I loved this book! It was so great to see Samantha Jellicoe back after 10 years. I enjoy the rapport between Sam and Rick. The only thing I did not like about the book (and this is minor to the story) is the title and the cover. I don’t think people realize how great a book is behind that cover! I hope Suzanne Enoch writes more of this series and that the next cover will be full body shots of real people who look as she has portrayed them. Couldn’t put this down! When is the next one?
Finally! After a decade, Samantha Jellicoe and Rick Addison have returned in author Suzanne Enoch's 6th book featuring this very sexy duo. Barefoot in the Dark picks up just weeks after the end of A Touch of Minx, and retired cat burglar Sam, billionaire Rick, and Ms. Enoch's storytelling have lost none of their magic. Sam and Rick are off to Canniebrae, Laird Rawlings' ancestral estate in the Scottish Highlands, for a respite from the press after announcing their engagement, where they're joined by Rick's closest family members. What Rick had hoped would be a quiet couple of weeks turns into a treasure hunt, and the race to prevent a centuries old secret from being discovered. Very nice mystery, and the old gang is back together as both Donner and Stoney join in on the fun. Well worth the wait, and well worth reading. If you haven't started this series yet, do yourself a favor and pick up Flirting With Danger (book 1) for some background - you won't be disappointed! A+++
I have been eagerly awaiting Suzanne Enoch's newest book. Samantha Jellicoe is one of my favorite characters and I am so thrilled the series has been continued. Witty and wonderful!
Rick's life will never be boring with Samantha in it. Barefoot in the Dark, is book with a wonderful treasure and ghost hunt in it. Scottish castles and townsfolk that will stop at nothing to protect what is theirs.
Will read/review after reading the previous series and getting back to this one.
I gave this three stars because I was forced to give a rating even though I didn’t read it (or finish it, rather). BAREFOOT IN THE DARK is listed as the first book of a new RS series by Suzanne Enoch. It wasn’t far into reading the book, however, that I got completely lost and realized this is a continuation of another series about this same couple.
I’m going to have to put this aside until such time I can read the previous series and figure out what the heck is happening. Not cool.
Needless to say, forget that this is listed as book one of a new set. It cannot reasonably be read standalone. It will drive the reader nuts trying to fill in blanks of past history and trying to figure out what’s going on.
