Due to a passing in the family a few years ago and my subsequent health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for years after the bereavement. Thank you for the opportunity.

160 Pages
Publisher: Inner Traditions / Healing Arts Press
Release Date: November 6, 2018

Nonfiction, Health, Mind, Body & Spirit, Essential Oils, Aromatherapy, Meditation

The book has the following chapters.

What is Mindfulness
Essential Oils as Meditation Companion
Applying Essential Oils
Complementary Wellness Techniques

I enjoy finding books that combine complimentary topics. The idea of essential oils and aromatherapy being used with mindfulness and meditation is not new, but the author does a good job of showing how and why they work together. She also includes a chart with the Noble Eightfold Path along. The photos in the book are beautiful.

The author provides a table detailing where specific plants store essential oil. As someone concerned with safety, I appreciate that the author does not recommend ingesting essential oils. She does an excellent job detailing the olfactory, respiratory, and limbic systems. This is a very thorough book and would be a great resource for anyone working with essential oils for themselves or others.

As an essential oil user this book is incredibly valuable to me. I loved the mix of meditation with Essential oils , an incredible resource book for getting the most out of essential oils.

Although this book is more academic than I expected, it is very informative and useful for anyone with an interest in essential oils and mindfulness

This book was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a user-friendly guide to essential oils and how they can be incorporated into mindfulness and meditative practice. Instead it is a highly theoretical book that read very much like a college thesis. There was a lot of scholarly jargon, quotes from various studies, and charts discussing the purpose and application of various essential oils. Thrown in were also chapters giving an overview of mindfulness, meditation, healthy eating, and other self-care practices. It had some information I found helpful, but overall I did not find it very interesting and I admittedly skipped through a lot of it. This is not by any means a light read, and I would not recommend it to people who are unfamiliar with essential oils and their therapeutic properties.

I loved the chapter on Mindfulness.  I found it very informative and helpful in understanding what mindfulness is and how it helps us in our daily lives.  I also found the chapter on how our bodies absorb and utilize the essential oils to be fascinating.  I used some of the relaxation techniques.  I did, however, find the chapters on nutrition and food to be out of place in a meditation and mindfulness book.  I would have liked to see more practice techniques, maybe a section on practice techniques and essential oil blends for anxiety, for peace, for calming, for jet lag, etc.  I thought the presentation was too text-heavy and would have been better with more graphics and illustrations.

I found the chart about where essential oils are stored in the plant to be fascinating--this is information that I have not seen in any of the other essential oils books I have looked at or own.

Overall I found this book to be far more wordy and academic than I would have like. There are lots of explanations, quotes and facts, tables of information and not enough information really on or put in such a way that it stood out more, what essential oils are best. Yes there is a table with this but its not the easiest way to read it.

It provided information on mindfulness but again it was all wordy. Too much for me to take in. Think I need to take it back a notch or two so its of benefit to myself.

I received this book from netgalley in return for a honest review

I am reviewing “Essential Oils for Mindfulness and Meditation” by Heather Dawn Godfrey.

I am just developing an interest in the self use of essential oils having had them used effectively during massage sessions in the past. I found this book to be a clear and concise relating of information particularly to someone new to the art of the use of essential oils. Many times books of this type heavily subscribe to the specific mindset of a user and do not give a broad application of knowledge for all types of people and their varying interests. This was absolutely not the case with Ms. Godfrey’s book. It was well researched and documented and would be a wonderful reference book for the use and application of oils and the ancillary healing and meditative methods that support them. All this in lay terms that anyone can understand without a great deal of prior experience.

Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review this book.

More on the scientific aspect of the subject and will not give a chart or a few pages per oil. So if you are expecting that another book would do the trick. But this book is, to me, more information and benefits to them and can be a good addition to ones resource pool.

As a certified Clinical Aromatherapist, I am more focused on the therapeutic benefits of essential oils. This book provides a good introduction to using essential oils and aromatherapy in meditation and mindfulness.

A great addition to my bookshelf! Looking forward to applying the use of my oils to a new area.

This book is an informative guide to the use of essential oils as an accompaniment to meditation/mindfulness. It finishes with a chapter on other forms of achieving wellbeing - nutrition, exercise and relaxation. There are footnotes and a bibliography for further information. As such it’s very comprehensive but as a newcomer to essential oils I didn’t find the content intimidating. Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for the chance to review this ebook in exchange for an honest review. I liked it so much I’m putting in on my paperback birthday wish list!

Essential oils have become so popular. It’s nice to have the opportunity to read a book combining mindfulness, meditation and essential oils. I would definitely recommend reading this book. When, how, where and the best time to use the essential oils is outlined throughout the book. A great reference book too.

Essential Oils for Mindfulness and Meditation is a great resource for those who want to deepen their understanding of aromatherapy and the use of essential oils in general, but particularly as a way to enhance mindfulness.

The book begins with a high-level discussion of mindfulness, then moves onto a thorough exploration of essential oils and how to use them as part of your mindfulness practice. This means that you don’t have to have background knowledge about mindfulness, meditation, or essential oils before coming to this book. You get to learn it all in one place.

Godfrey approaches the material academically. She cites numerous studies and references to back her claims. She explores essential oils from a variety of directions to include the history of their use, the science of scent, and the practical application of how to use them. She talks about how to choose them, how to store them, proper dosages, dilution, and so on. In addition to standard prose, the book includes photographs, tables, and diagrams to make the information easy to understand. The book even includes a section about complementary wellness techniques in which Godfrey touches on exercise and nutrition.

I enjoyed reading this book. First of all, it is pretty. There is something to be said for a book that sparks peaceful excitement just by looking at its pages. The information is organized well, and I learned a lot. For example, I didn’t realize until I read this book how prevalent the mention of essential oils is in spiritual and historical texts. It is a practice that has been going on in some form for a very long time. I learned that adding essential oils to my bath mixed with a carrier oil is preferred to reduce the risk for drying and irritation over my current method of adding the drops “neat.”

This book is great for people who want to expand their own techniques at home, as well as for those who offer services to clients — particularly meditation instructors, Reiki practitioners, yoga instructors, and other mindfulness practitioners.
