This book featured a series of short stories with characters who all worked for the same company. The stories were very loosely related but there was no over reaching plot. This book would be great for short story or novella romance readers.
*Rating: 3.5/5
I received a copy of this through NetGalley for my honest review. What initially drew me into this book was that it was a collection of short stories. Some of these stories were easier and faster to fly through than others and those that didn't follow as easily could have been condensed and still read beautifully. One of my favorite things throughout all stories were the characters and how characters from other stories make cameos in another story. Overall this collection was a thoroughly fun and iteresting read. Would I read more from this author? I would like to read an entire novel by this author to see the differences/similarities to the short stories.
*I RECEIVED AN ARC FROM NETGALLEY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW*
I honestly didn't exactly know what to expect when I started reading this collection of intertwined stories. Sure, I knew they were basically retellings of fairytales and folklore stories, but still, I didn't expect to adore some of them and to feel completely indifferent about others.
The thing I loved the most about this book was the fact that all those traditional myths and tales were beautifully transferred into the modern world, reminding me a bit of those Hallmark movies I enjoy watching from time to time. They were enjoyable, they were well-written, they were fun, even though they seemed kind of predictable.
Still, this collection was an easy, summer read, and if you're into those contemporary, happily ever after kind of stories, you should definitely pick up that book.
You may cringe sometimes with some of the characters and the things they do, the decisions they make and the way they act in general, still the main idea of each and every story remains clear and pure, and it sends a pretty direct message to the reader.
I'll definitely reread some of those stories, especially Love's Code, which is inspired by the Greek myth of Minotaur!
Overall, this was a pleasant read. Nothing amazing, still beautiful enough to keep me entertained.
Since the very first time I saw this book I knew I want to read it. Because last time I kind of like retellings and I also love MM stories - so, could I say no to an anthology of MM retellings? Of course I couldn't.
Asta Idonea created a great universe to work with - the whole company called DunGriffinCorp where we go through all the employees and their love life, all of them inspired by each fairy-tale or myth. This idea is really impressing. We meet all of the characters through all the stories and even watch some "backgrounds" to specific scenes, which was perfect! And don't you try to tell me you never imagined Cinderella with men only. And since all the stories are told by bussinessmen, I was curious even more.
Sometimes I was just wondering with the characters - there's really a lot of them. I understand that even the author could easily get lost, and sometimes I wasn't able to tell difference between some characters. But that was occasional.
So, as I'm used to, I will go through all the stories and review them one by one.
DRAGGED INTO LOVE - 3*
Of course I know the Scandinavian mythology and I love both Thor and Loki, but I didn't know about this myth. So I was surprised what I got in this story. It was predictable, yes - but I still like it. Readers complain about Theo being selfish, but I thought he was cute. I had more problems with Graham, didn't like this guy. But I burst out laughing during reading that, so that's a good sign - three stars as an avergage.
LOVE'S CODE - 4*
I was really surprised there. The main character, Andre, is programming, which is kind of thing I never understand to so I was amazed by the way he was doing. The way Idonea adjusted the myth about Minotaur was great in every way. And it was even better than the first one, I liked the love line better than with Theo and Graham.
GUESSING GAMES - 2,5*
This was kind of a problem. I understand why readers don't like Sasha, but from time to time I felt a bit sorry for him. While reading this I've already forgotten what kind of story it is, so when I found out, that was kind of surprise! Of course it becomes predictable since we all know Rumplestilstkin, but as I didn't read all the employees on the list, I was excited to know the real name, just like I haven't read the original story.
ASSIGNATIONS ND ULTIMATUMS - 3*
This couple is definitely most cute from all of listed. I loved Ross and Hunter's relationship since the very start, though the storyline was kind of weird to me. It's not the worst one, but not the best one though.
LOST AND FOUND - 4,5*
And there came the big surprise, Cinderella! I was chuckling the whole time. This story was great. Although the ending was a bit strange I liked the plot and I definitely loved Cillian. He's such a sweet boy.
A DEBT IS A DEBT - 5*
Beauty and the Beast is one of my most favourite fairy-tales, so I was kind of glad that this story took place as a last. And when I started reading it, it was sure I'm going to love it. It's definitely the best story from the whole anthology. I loved them both, I loved how their relationship was going on. 5 stars without any regret.
The writing style is fast and sweet, you'll probably smile the whole time while reading it. In conclusion; this was a nice surprise. I'll definitely get back to some of its stories. The average of all ratings says it's 3,6, so improved three stars.
Huge thanks goes to NetGalley and NineStar Press for letting me to read this book!
I was so happily surprised by this collection of stories. I loved the idea but I was worried about the execution, because I’d read something alike and I was left unimpressed. I’m so thrilled to see this was such a different experience. I had a wonderful time reading it.
I don’t want to say what each story is about. I start reading it without knowing it myself and I guess that was part of the charm, not knowing what to expect or what fairytale of myth might be the next to take place. I loved the way it connect the modern business world, so plain and boring, with the magic of fairy tales and myths. I also loved how the characters were, somehow related. It is beautifully written and I didn’t felt the time reading it.
Obviously, I had ones that I liked more than others. Guessing Games was my favorite, the characters on it were adorable. Even though I had some that I liked more than the others, I enjoy every story I’d read, even the ones I didn’t knew the myth or fairytale on which it was based. I guess it might be because of it that I liked them the most, because I didn’t know what was going to happen. Overall it was a beautiful book, utterly entertaining, lighthearted and magical. A fantastic reading experience.
Thanks for lettin* me try these short stories. Nice spins on fairy tales made for a bunch of quick reads. Not at all my normal genre, actually requested by mistake but felt I owed the courtesy of. Checking it out.
I like anthologies, especially ones based around myths and fairytales. I cringed at the first story, Theo is a selfish idiot first bargaining his sister and then jumping the gun.
Next up a reinventing of the labyrinth. This one was pure genius, in what I find boring and impossible to understand- coding.
The next story is fun. Instead of gold straw it’s a database records problem. I like how mischievous Jack is.
The next one is probably my least favourite, mainly because I couldn’t stand the father or Cameron. Hunter and Ross were adorable.
Lost and found was my favourite. I liked how it jumped back and forth between Mark and Ci. Not sure I liked the method, seemed a bit much when a company yearbook would do. Luke makes an appearance. Is that guy gay or not?
Finally the last story- was kinda hoping for a sleeping beauty retelling, coz there’s always someone sleeping at their desk- a Beauty and the beast retelling. Didn’t like the brother. Wynn was sweet and a perfect match for Dunstan, who I felt sorry for. I liked the small part at the end. Each story is short and sweet, perfect for stop and start reading.
