I really enjoyed the His Fair Assassin series- the main characters were assassin nuns, a very fun concept. The romances were generally good too.
I got about a quarter of the the way through this one and didn't care what happened next. Sybella is a favorite character of mine but she didn't make up for Genevieve, who I could not care about at all. The book felt slow paced to me and my understanding is that the two storylines don't merge until the very end of the book. I'm going to just stop with the first three books in this series and be satisfied.
I really enjoyed the storyline in world building in the novel. I also really liked the characters. I thought this was a solid read, and I will definitely be reading more by this author.
Sadly, I have decided that this book and the authors other books are just not of interest to me anymore. I tried to pick this up a few times and I just couldn't get back into the world.
My first book by this author—which was a mistake on my part! I’ll have to get caught up on her earlier works now!
A return to the world of the assassins of the convent of St. Mortain! We reconnect with Sybella and the Duchess of Brittany and meet Genevieve when their worlds collide! A great read!
Robin LaFebers always delivers. I'd read her grocery list. She writes with a deep understanding of what fantasy readers want.
Unfortunately my Amazon account got hacked numerous times and I closed my account. When closing the account, I lost all of my electronic kindle ARCs from netgalley under that email including this title which I am unable to review
Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review your titles.
I do appreciate it and continue to review books that I get the chance to read.
Thanks again!
I think it was written well but I’m afraid I wasn’t the target audience. I think a lot of people will like this one but it just wasn’t for me.
Having loved the original Fair Assassin books, I was cautiously optimistic about this new duology continuing Sybella's story and introducing new characters. After reading it, I think this may have been better to tie specifically to the prior series (book 4 instead of book 1 in a new duology) because it picks up right where MORTAL HEART ends. Sybella is accompanying the Duchess to France where she will wed the king and finally end the long war. Unfortunately, the French court is almost as deadly as the battlefield they just left, and Sybella must figure out a way to keep everyone she loves safe. Meanwhile, we meet a new character, Genevieve. She was placed as a spy in a Count's household 5 years ago and has had no directions from the Abbey since. When she learns devastating news, she decides to journey to the French court to make herself useful, but the journey there is filled with snags and stumbles. As Genevieve and Sybella's paths start to cross, the stakes are higher than ever to avoid another war and more lost lives.
Sybella is such a fantastic character, and I enjoyed seeing the loose threads of her prior ending start to resolve in unexpected ways. She had such growth in DARK TRIUMPH, but the road to trust and love in yourself and those around you is rarely a straight line. She is faced with old and new challenges in the French court. I particularly enjoyed the focus on her relationship with the Duchess as she becomes queen.
Genevieve is a wonderful addition to the prior trio of young women in this series. She's brash, at the end of her rope, and angry. She's had silence for so long, lost a dear friend, and feels trapped in every avenue left available to her. I love her spunk and determination to do something good, even if she's looking in the wrong direction. She also develops a possibly star-crossed romance with a prisoner in the household she was stuck at who is connected to her story more than she could ever imagine.
I highly recommend doing a read (or reread) of the original trilogy before diving into IGNITING DARKNESS. Regardless, IGNITING DARKNESS was a fantastic addiction to the world of St. Mortain and his daughters.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series by Robin LaFevers. The original trilogy is simply amazing and this series is so captivating. Unfortunately I am unable to post a review of this book on my blog at this time. I am excited to read more by Robin LaFevers and this publishing imprint. Thank you so much for the opportunity.
The Eater of Books!
The His Fair Assassins might be one of favorite series which is why I was so excited for this book. I loved the call back to earlier characters and plots but the new plot took forever to get going. I found it hard to get invested in the new characters because everything was moving so slow. There was finally pay off towards the end but man it was tough to get there. I appreciate the strong female characters and the touch of romance and danger but the pace really through me off. I will continue to promote the series and I look forward to the sequel because now I have to know what happens!
Unfortunately I tried MANY times to read this ARC and I just can't connect with the story! The plot moves way too slow for me!
I DNF'ed because I thought I would enjoy it, but it turned out not to be my style. However, thank you for the opportunity to read and review this title.
My expectations were too high.
I know it's true. I enjoyed the His Fair Assassin series years ago and maybe I wanted too much from this book or maybe it's because it's been so long since I read the original trilogy so present day me doesn't love it as much but either way... I wasn't feeling COURTING DARKNESS. The world was great and it's one of those rare books/series with a historical setting that I enjoy. Anad I liked Sybella's story. But I wasn't a huge fan of Genevieve (so that's half the book right there) and I almost wish their stories had been separated into two shorter/concurrent books.
A mostly average read for me.
I thought I reviewed this but hadn't. I want to re-read it before the sequel comes out because I don't remember it as well as I should.
I do remember being on the edge of my seat and turning pages as fast as I could and being so sad when I had to put the book down because I had to know what happened next. I also liked the mystery of figuring out who one of the main characters was, and the way they connected into the series. When it ended, I knew it would be a tough wait for the sequel!
Loved this author and her fair assassin series, I loved delving back into this world. Beautifully written!
I really enjoyed this one! My only complaint is that there were SO many characters (like Stephen King amount of characters) and the plot really dragged a couple of times. Other than that, this was a really enjoyable read!
Courting Darkness is book one in Ron LaFevers CD Duology! This book focuses on death's daughters! I feel like I should go back and read the first series His Fair Assassins since this is a spin-off series. This is a slow burn, political, and sometimes confusing, therefore I think I need to read the first series! Though it was very interesting and detailed.
This is the first in a new series set in LaFevers’ world of The Fair Assassin. Saint Mortain is the convent where assassins are trained. The book follows dual plotlines of two of the convent’s girls.
Genevieve was sent out with her sister on assignment years earlier but has had no word from the convent for a very long time. When the king showed an interest in Genevieve, the girls were moved to a different castle. Now, having no purpose, Genevieve wanders afield and finds a prisoner left for dead in a pit. Intrigued by him, she and the prisoner strike up a strange but alluring relationship.
Sybella is the most lethal assassin from the school and her assignment is to protect the Duchess who’s now the new Queen of the French Court. She’s busy determining the safety of the kingdom and searching for two contacts she was to rely on but who are proving difficult to locate.
LaFevers’ books are riveting and darkly romantic. Her return to the land of her earlier series will please her loyal readers. With strong characters, intense action and writing that flows, this is sure to be another winner.
