What an incredible book! Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT! I love poetry books like this one!
Pay attention to this words: I predict that this book is going to have a huge success, an overwhelming success as Milk and Honey had!
This book will be released in October this year. So first of all I want to thank Andrews McMeel Publishing for giving me this book in advance via netgalley.
The structure of the book consists of a poem always accompanied by a photo, ie. the book joins two things I love: photography and poetry.
This book is divided in four parts: The Sun, The Moon, Stars and The Rain.
Honestly I can not tell you which of my parts was my favorite because I loved them all, but I can leave you here the poem I loved the most!
"It does not count if you believe in yourself when it's easy to believe in yourself it does not count if you believe the world can be a better place when the future looks bright. It does not count if you think you're going to make it when the finish line is right in front of you.
It counts when it's hard to believe in yourself, when it looks like the world's going to end and you've still got a long way to go.
That's when it counts. That's when it matters the most."
I highly recommend this book! It's the best poetry book I've read so far this year!
I recommend it my friends and I know that this book will be a success!
This is one of those books that if I had a physical copy I would put a thousand post-it's and as I had it in ebook I ended up marking a lot of pages and phrases. Seriously, 80% of the pages have something underlined.
Thank you to Iain S. Thomas, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and NetGalley for allowing me the extreme pleasure of access to an advanced reader copy of “I Wrote This for You” for an honest review.
This collection was gorgeous and there is, indeed, “something magical” about it. The books starts off divided into four chapters, titled Sun, Moon, Stars, and Rain, which absolutely is magical, and got me curious from the get go about getting to last section, given it was the only section not given a solar-typed nomenclature.
I was pulled from the curiosity, not entirely, but most from the moment I started because the words you find yourself in demand all your time, and mind, and heart. These lines feel like they slow slide down your spine, to twine around your heart and remind you exactly how you, too, felt these emotions in similar situations.
I love love love this book! I think it's thought provoking and very personal. I think anything that gets you to think is great and that the author provokes deep thought or emotion with a few sentences is amazing! Will always recommend this author!
This was just alright to me, I wasn’t blown away. Some of the pieces were very pretty, but most of them weren’t lyrical, and were just stuck with a nicer looking photograph. I enjoyed the concept of the author writing for a specific person, but this wasn’t a collection I felt compelled to buy and read again.
I really enjoyed this book. I related to more of the poems than any other poem collection, I would have loved it in more if the pictures would have shown up for me. I think it would have really enhanced the reading experience. I will definitely check this out when it comes out.
"I Wrote This for You" is a collection of mostly rather short prose, mingled with photographs with the intent of capturing an atmosphere that was sadly lost on me.
This is not to say, objectively speaking, that this is a bad book. Reading this felt like opening someone's diary, and there were moments where I felt heartache and moments where I smiled and felt melancholic. I believe a lot of people can identify with many of the central themes being presented.
It just felt too personal and specific for me at times, like I was meant to pinpoint something and go "Yeah, I remember that." when clearly I wasn't there, nor did I experience it. It's a bit awkward when you feel detached with a title like "I Wrote This for You".
To sum it up, this just wasn't for me, and that's okay. I can take it at face value and still recommend it to others, because I feel it's a book that affects everyone differently.
Perhaps written before the craze of Instagram and tumblr poets (or maybe as a part of the latter), I Wrote This For You is a mix of poetry and photographs that those who like short bursts of poems will enjoy.
I’d heard about this collection years ago and was always interested in reading it. I’m glad I got a chance to if only to check it off my list. I liked a few of his longer poems, but as usual, I found I struggled with the short snippets.
I love this collection! Great prose, beautiful writing, it's so unfair that poetry can move you with so few words! I love the art too.
Thanks NetGalley for the eARC.
There are a few ways to consider this book-- one, as a poetry collection. To be frank, the poetry is pretty bad-- a lot of cliches, small thoughts not developed in interesting ways. There is the occasional gem of a line, but no single poem impressed me. The second thing to consider is this as a collection of photographs-- I found the photography to be composed with great skill. A lot of it was very interesting and unique and beautiful and odd. It was definitely a successful bunch of photos. Finally, when considering this book as a combination of the two things-- poetry and photography-- it largely fails, mostly because there is a disconnect in skill level, kind of like when a comic book has a great story but awful art, or vice-versa. Even though I loved the photographs, I didn't love them in the context of this book-- I just want to seek out more of this photographer's work elsewhere.
This is book of poetry and photographs pertaining to love, loss, and emotions that can apply to anyone that reads it. I thought the writing was beautiful but couldn't always relate the picture to the message I took away from the words. However the pictures themselves were works of art. It is easy to read through this book too quickly and I found it better to read the poems a few at a time to absorb their specific meaning to me. I don't usually read poetry but this was a lovely introduction to it and I may read more again.
Thanks to NetGalley, Iain S. Thomas and Central Avenue Publishing for a free electronic copy of this poetry.
Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for a chance to read this poetry collection!
Themes: Love, relationships, grief/death, finding yourself.
What I liked:
-I loved the layout, with a photograph accompanying each poem, it was a unique detail and I liked how the author combined photography and poetry together.
-I liked how the author speaks directly to the reader.
What I didn't like:
-I was expecting something different, these poems mainly focus on relationships and love, maybe I was hoping for something more.
-Towards the middle, the poems started getting very repetitive and I struggled to connect. I couldn't really feel any emotion in the poems.
My favourites:
-The Best Way to Run in Traffic
-The Twins
-The Fur
-The Paint Hides the Brick
-The Children of Time
Overall, I am very glad that I read this collection. Everyone takes away something different from poetry, so if this sounds like something you would enjoy I would definitely recommend giving it a go.
I loved this, so highly recommended.
This is something that everyone should read at some point in their lives, in my opinion, it's something that everyone can relate too.
This book of poetry is so raw and real and heartbreaking. The pictures are amazing, too. Thanks so much for letting me read and review this one. My favorite poem was The Truth is Born in Strange Places.
It was very... Basic. There were a couple of poems which stood out, but none of them really impacted me. I consider it an easily forgettable poetry collection. The pictures were impressing, but after a while I got bored of their simplicity, and also, they were just too many of trains and stations and subways.
Overall, it didn't impress me.
"You forget that, in the dark, we must move closer together in order to see each other. You were never alone."
This book employs poetry placed next to photographs, which I was excited for, but it fell completely flat. All the pictures were blurry and of random things, and they weren't necessarily pretty, and didn't really add anything to the poems.
And the poems themselves were sometimes pretty, sometimes okay. When I got to the final section of this book, I was ready for it to be over. It wasn't necessarily bad, but the subject matter and the way love was discussed just became super generic. I highlighted a few lines here and there, but it nothing that made me think too hard or sit back and go "whoa."
I finished this completely unaffected and glad it was over, but there were still some nice quotes sprinkled in.
This isn’t the first time I’ve read I Wrote This for You by pleasefindthis, or Iain S. Thomas. I fell in love with it a number of years ago, having bought the e-book rather quickly after I learned of its existence. The experience was emotional, the poems filling with me with all sorts of emotions that sent me on a bit of a whirlwind. It was beautiful, there was no question. And so, naturally, I had to buy a physical copy which has sat on my shelf since 2014 and every once in a while I pull it out and read through the feels, reeling in the poignant sadness that the poetry and matching photos bring out.
I’ve loved this book for a long time, so naturally when I saw that it was being republished with “several” poems that have not been read before anywhere else and that it was available for review, there really wasn’t a single moment of hesitation. I wanted quite desperately to have a chance to read the new poetry, to delve back into the feelings that the book brings out. And I will say, the poems and the story they tell are just as hauntingly beautiful as they were the first time I read them. But much to my dismay, as I compared the copy I currently own and the arc I was reading...I only found one poem that was actually new.
And I guess I was just thrown, my resulting action to flip through every page in each copy—the arc and the one I own—in hopes that I was somehow wrong and that the initial index at the beginning listing the poems was simply...incorrect. But unfortunately that was not the case. And so, it left me feeling somewhat cheated by the description, which cited “several new and exclusive poems that do not appear anywhere else,” something that is clearly either a lie or an immensely disappointing exaggeration. One new poem does not several make.
So unless I somehow got an incomplete copy...?
While I utterly adore this book, the poems, and the photography the only difference that this one has with the 2014 edition is the fact that the author’s name is finally included on the cover alongside his pseudonym please find this and that the first poem and photo in the book is actually new and unique. Considering this, I’ve come to the conclusion that, while the new poem is good and all, this book isn’t really worth buying unless you’re of a desire to have all the copies of his books or you haven’t read it before.
If you’re new to I Wrote This for You, I’d definitely suggest getting a copy, since it is a lovely collection of poetry. But if you already have a copy, one poem might not be worth it.
I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is full of hauntingly beautiful poems. No matter who reads this book, it feels like it was made for you personally. The poems are lovely and I enjoyed reading them all. The pictures comment to poems nicely as well. I am so happy I came across this wonderful gem.
