I practically speed-flipped through this one. Who doesn't love a well-developed villain? No spoilers here, it's all in the synopsis.
Now, will she get away with it? And what else does she have in her?
This book actually deals a few really deep and important issues making it a quick favorite for those readers who prefer their suspense border on upmarket. It's YA and nicely flows, much like that river that's constantly described in the story and is to blame for everything and anything.
A quick read with long-lasting thoughts to keep!
Thank you Aria for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
This is a story that starts with a murder. So you know who the murderer is throughout the entire book. However, you also learn how manipulative, naive and blind some people can be. It's a tale that probably happens every day but not one you would think about. For me, this is 3 stars. It definitely makes you think.
I was given in and Vance readers copy in exchange for an honest review. I really wanted to like this book. I love anything about a female Sociopath, and teenage best friend dramatics. But I never really got the vibe of this book – she didn’t seem to be that Sociopathic, not in a truly interesting way – and we never really heard that much about the friendship. Just seemed like a sad lonely girl who for some reason killed somebody. Not very well-developed. Skip it
I wasn't sure what to make of this book,I thought it started out well but then seemed a bit slow to me.I thought it was an interesting idea but wish I had felt more empathy with both the main character and the police officer, I felt nothing for either character.I kept reading to find out what happened rather than because I was really engaged with the story .I would have to say for me this wasn't a great read.thanks to the publishers and netgalley for an ARC
Hayley has a tough life, she isn’t accepted at home or at school and when her best friend pushes her away she decides that her friend has to go! This is a very disturbing, dark read which I’m sure will divide people. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest review.
This was a great summer read. Suspenseful and creepy. Detective Samuels is determined not to let another young girl pay for her unacknowledgent and let another killer slip through her hands and it makes you wonder if she is thinking rationally; Hayley is one messed up girl, but is she believable? redeemable? Psychotic? I liked the pacing of this book for the most part, at times I found there was info that felt unneeded. It makes me wonder if we sometimes accept things at face value because it’s what we think it should be the alternative feels unacceptable.
I will definitely check out this author again.
Well written psychological thriller with a twist in that you know 'whodunit' from the first chapter. Themes around the impact of early experiences, complex personalities and how we can all interpret situations differently and how these interpretations are impacted upon by our past experiences.
I truly struggled getting through this book but once I finally finished it wasn’t that bad. Stick to reading through it and you’ll be glad you did!
This book is seriously chilling. Very dark. I absolutely loved it.
The location just came alive for me. I feel like I just stayed in this village for a few days.
I can see how this book might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it certainly is mine.
I look forward to more from this author.
A big thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. This one will stay with me a while.
iss Her Goodbye is a page turner of a psychological thriller where the question is not who did what but whether or not they will get away with it.
We have two main protagonists both of whom are highly intriguing – engaged in a battle of wills only the reader can see and that only one of them fully understands.
Susan Gee does a great job of manipulating the plot – In a lot of ways I wanted both of them to win, even though when you really dig deep and think about what Hayley is doing it’s horrifically compelling.
There’s a wonderful emotive edge to proceedings and I’m still not sure how I felt about the ultimate resolution- but what I loved about this book was the total avoidance of cliche. Here we have two strongly independent female characters, it’s all about them. The supporting cast are well written and have depth but they are all drawn, in one way or another, into the vortex of these two. Hayley, murderous and damaged and Beverley, whose investigation is driven from within.
Kiss Her Goodbye is a story of perception, truth and consequences. I thought it was excellent.
Recommended.
Well, as you know I read a lot of dark psychological thrillers with nasty characters in but Hayley Reynolds the main character in this book has to be amongs the most chilling, menacing and manipulative psychopaths I have met!!!
She is disturbing, the book is disturbing but then its meant to be!
It is not an easy read ( in places ) and it certainly wont have you laughing out loud much ( ever!! )
Apart from her the characters are not endearing and that included DI Beverley Samuels who really needa to sort some of her personal issues out as at times they ‘overcrowded’ the story!
Hayley’s family, ‘friends’ and ‘boyfriend’ are in equal measure abhorrent!!
Some of the descrptions of the river and area surrounding it became repetitive, there are only so many ways to describe water!
I LOVED the book being set in the 80’s and the references to the music and tv etc of that brilliant decade
The story does enough to ‘keep you’ with the vile carryings on of Hayley and then, just as you may feel like your getting irritated by it WHAM, ‘it happens’ you see the direction the book is going and where its been heading all along and it leaves you, well me, shocked, there is NO happy ending or 3 years later merry little epilogue to this tale, I was fuming at what happened, I am sure that is what the author intended
A very exciting and gripping ending that made this booku well worth the read
8/10 Overall 4 stars
I do not like to give critical reviews or post critical reviews and I try to find some redeeming qualities and positives in books, therefore, I wanted to provide private feedback on Kiss Her Goodbye.
The premise of this book sounded diabolical, and I really wanted it to be the “dark psychological crime novel.” However, to me, it fell flat from the beginning. The killer introduced herself right from the first page, which was okay, but the writing of this character and other characters in the book was not well developed and the dialogue and storyline did not seem plausible with these girls being in college. Even though the book description read like the girls were in high school they were actually in college and still victims of bullying and overall bad plot development. The dialogue between the characters didn’t seem to match up with college-level girls. The main character, Hayley, was quite evil, and if the dialogue and setting were different or revamped, it would read better. The ending was surprising, though.
There has been a lot said about this book treating college age students like jr. high schoolers. As a public school educator, I can say that some students of that kid behavior really does carry over into post secondary education. The characters could have been a little more realistic, but sadly, the situations are all to realistic
I am so sorry but this book was not at all what was advertised in my opinion. The main character is bland and really hard to enjoy reading about.
The story is all over the place and it does not flow naturally. All in all, I did not enjoy reading this and I would not recommend this book.
Gosh I really hate having to give negative reviews but this book was unbearably bad. The cover, however, is gorgeous and includes the blurb "She was my best friend. So why did I kill her?", only that's not entirely true. The murderer, Haley, introduces her victim, Kirsten, as her best friend and then a few pages later she introduces Leila, whom she's known most of her life, as her best friend. This is just one example of the glaring inconsistencies in this story. Haley and her victim go to college together where Leila is ruthlessly bullied. Yes, I said bullied. In college. On the day of her murder she is tormented by girls making fun of the fact that her period has spotted her tights. Really? In college? They apparently have principals in college and they call your mom if you're absent, too. I knew at that point this book was going to drive me to new depths of frustration. All of the college kids in this book read more like cliché 8th graders from a really bad YA novel. The murder and subsequent storyline is so implausible and poorly developed I thought my eyes were going to stay permanently rolled up into my skull. Even the writing style is juvenile, reading more like a middle school creative writing assignment. That's all I've got. This book has exhausted me.
I was provided an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
