The illustrations in this book are just fine; they are colorful and cute. The text seems a bit disjointed. Although an attempt is made to cover the typical fall things, the transitions are clunky. This is a simplistic narrative without much depth or cohesion.
Thank you to NetGalley and Clovis Publishing, Inc. for providing an advance readers copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Sammy in the Fall follows kitty Sammy and his horse companion, Hob, as they find adventures on a rainy, fall day. They pick apples, rake leaves, collect chestnuts, jump in rain puddles, and read a book before bed.
I absolutely loved the illustrations. They are colorful and drawn in a style that really appeals to me. The backgrounds are full of details like little animals, birds, and toys, and I can imagine a child exploring the pictures with delight. However, there are some missed opportunities as well. On one page, the text asks the reader to find baby hedgehogs asleep in their nests, but this is the only explicitly interactive prompt in the text.
The books’ weakness is its narrative. Sammy and Hobs engage in a chain of unrelated events, and not all of them are exclusively associated with fall (such as taking a walk, making crafts, or playing in puddles). The story suffers from a lack of a unifying theme.
The hard copy has a half-page feature that hides then reveals illustrations but it was difficult to see this in the e-book.
We read this story few days ago. My preschooler wanted to read this again and she referred to it as the rainbow story.
The motifs of fall leaves, hedgehogs, mushrooms, squirrels, acorns and chestnuts are cute. The peeka-boo surprise is cute. kids do enjoy that kind of thing of hiding and finding.
On the second read, we notice the white bark of the aspen trees.
The colors and illustrations are cute. The window as the frame of the outside world works very well. You see fall and rainfall through it.
Hob's character has been well done too as both animate (falling asleep during bedtime story) and inanimate at once. Just noticed the little sail boat in the house.
Creative idea of making spider web with yarn and sticks. Cameos by parrot and owl dont go by unnoticed.
Sammy in the Fall tells the story of a young boy and his adventures on a fall day. It's written with nice illustrations and a few words per page. Kids can enjoy following along with Sammy's day, complete with ending the day getting into bed.
This would be a cute bedtime story for kids ages 2-4. They will enjoy looking at the pictures and wanting to do the things Sammy does (jump in leaves and puddles).
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The pictures in this book were very bright and cute and there were a lot of detail. The story was cute too. I think this would be best suited for younger preschoolers.
I liked the format/story of the book and following the two adorable characters through their interaction with autumn .. works for this.
Overall: The books are geared toward toddler but could work in a kindergarten classroom or student in my opinion.
Cute story about Sammy and Hob having fun on a fall day! My young daughter really enjoyed it and loved the pictures!
Such a delightful autumnal read. From the colours to the activities, it’s the perfect seasonal read.
Sammy in the Fall provides its reader with a brief glance at some of the different activities Sammy and his friend Hob do on a Fall day. From picking apples, to building leave piles, to crafting inside, there are so many things to do. There are moments in the story that lend themselves to interaction between the reader and the characters in the book, and the bold and bright illustrations are sure to please younger readers. The story appears choppy at times, and while the story was written for younger audiences with shorter attention spans, the plot suffers because of it.
Fall can be also an enjoyable experience if you know how to wisely spend your time. Let's see what you can do, together with Sammy the courageous and creative cat. If you are dress well you may enjoy every single drop of rain, but also develop some creative indoors activities, like for instance build up with yellow leaves. Exploring the nature is also part of the list of recommended activities this time of the year. Through creative illustrations and wise words, Sammy in the Fall is a great reading, as it is involving the little child alongside with the adult reader in discovering different hints spread all over the page. A great read for the fall long evenings and not only.
