The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald
Abi Knight gets a call stating her daughter Olivia has fallen off a bridge. When arriving at the hospital she is informed that Olivia is brain dead. Olivia is also pregnant and must remain on life support to keep her baby alive. Abi feels the police are not investigating the incident. She believes that Olivia did not fall off the bridge. Abi is determined to find out what happened to Olivia.
I nearly read this book in ONE day!! This book has it all, suspense, intrigue, family secrets, and a heart-wrenching storyline. I found the story so gripping and was up reading way past my bedtime on a work night! I woke up in the morning and had to finish before going to work. I am so thankful for a flexible work schedule.
All I could think about throughout the story was how powerful a mother’s love is for her child and what lengths she will go to in order to protect her child.
I normally take a couple of days when I finish a book to digest it and think about what I want to say but here I am just minutes after finishing The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald writing my review as fast as I can realizing that there is no need dwelling on this book because it was so riveting, raw and real. My gut feeling and the emotional reaction to this book are telling everyone out there that this is good, really good. It feeds ask of your emotions and curiosity, leaving you fulfilled and yet sad that like all good books, it ended.
The story starts out with a mothers worst nightmare as Abi Knight gets a call from the hospital that her 17 year old daughter, Olivia, has fallen off a bridge. Single mom, Abi, races to the hospital and rushes to see her daughter, knowing that Olivia will be fine, she just needs to see her and Abi will make it alright. But she can't. After the doctor gives her the most gut-wrenching and tragic news possible, Olivia is brain dead, the doctor then drops the bombshell that Olivia is pregnant and will be kept alive due to state law until the baby can be born. What? How can my beautiful virgin daughter be pregnant is what goes through Abi's "thousand thoughts a minute" mind? How did she fall off the bridge and not survive since Olivia was a champion high school swimmer? What was Olivia doing out so late when she always came home on time? As Abi deals with the grief of losing her daughter when the baby comes, she seeks answers to all of her immediate questions and as the story unfolds, there are more and more questions that will be asked and ultimately answered about that night and the months before Olivia's fateful fall. The characters in this story are realistic and believable although not all are likable. While no one is perfect, a mother's love is. Read this book and you will feel the gamut of emotions. So curl up in your favorite chair with the beverage of your choosing for a great read. Just make sure to have tissues handy. Christina McDonald's book was one of the first books I've read this year and other books will have a tough act to follow. Thank you to Netgalley and Galley Books for an advance copy of this book. #NetGalley #TheNightOliviaFell
This novel was a slow burn. The alternating timelines and somewhat unreliable narrators were reminiscent of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. However, throughout the story, you can’t help but become invested in these characters and their well-being. Although some situations and decision were frustrating and seemed to lack common sense, one could identify with the multiple roles and characters found in this book. At times I was the mother, the impatient and emotional teenager, the wronged boyfriend, the insecure best friend, the admirer, and many more. The need and desire to find out what happened will resonate with everyone and, in the end, the story will be just as satisfying as it was heartbreaking.
At 4:30 in the morning, Abi Knight’s phone rings. That is never a good thing. They say something has happened to her daughter Olivia. She needs to get to the hospital. She is shocked awake, thinking her daughter was still in her bed, but no, they are right. Olivia has fallen off a bridge and is officially brain dead. Abi is in shock but as she prepares to have her daughter become a organ donor, she is hit again with another shock, Olivia is pregnant. They cannot unhook her and will do whatever it takes to make sure the baby survives. Abi struggles with the fact that she had no idea what was going on in her daughter’s life. She thought she did. She has done her best to raise her alone, keeping her secrets tucked away. And she did, until Olivia accidentally sees a girl who looks exactly like her.
Abi is determined to find out just what happened the night Olivia fell. Abi knows this was no accident. She will go through hell and high water to get justice for her baby. She will also have to come to terms to a life without Olivia and a life with this little baby.
I loved this book! It was one that I picked up and in no way was going to put down until I found out what happened. My husband was sitting there talking to me but I honestly couldn’t tell you what he was talking about. I think I said “yeah” a few times. (FYI, I think it was about football) I loved Abi’s progression throughout the story. She was so shut off from a lot of emotions and it truly makes sense when you read her backstory but watching her open up was wonderful. The story is both sad and uplifting. I was sobbing at the end. (Which I am sure surprises no one) You can’t help but put yourself in her shoes if you are a mother.
There are many twists and turns, a few I had worked out, but the ultimate mystery, the who did it, was a surprise and yet it was hard to find a villain.
Thanks to Netgalley and Gallery for a copy of this wonderful book.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for this ARC.
I had to give myself a few minutes after I finished this book. It was truly just sad. Even in the most harrowing thriller, the victim makes it. And from the get-go, you're set up with the knowledge that she won't. Throughout the whole book, I kept thinking, Well, she'll come around. Something will happen and she'll come around. The book and the writing itself were good, but not to the caliber I anticipated. I heard a lot about this book and I watched week after week as it sat pending in my requested titles. I wasn't entirely disappointed, honestly, just sad. Even with the happiest ending that you could imagine, it was sad. Maybe don't read if you're PMSing or super sensitive because it will make you cry.
I truly wish I could give this more than 5 stars. The storyline was addictive, suspenseful and written beautifully. The characters well developed with effortless interactions. Abi receives the most terrifying phone call no parent wants regarding her daughter Olivia. There are twists and turns throughout the story that will have you on the edge. A must read that will keep you guessing. This will definitely be one of the best books I read in 2019. Phenomenal.
This was a quick and engaging read. It has been compared to Reconstructing Amelia and I would agree. Both have a grief stricken mother trying to figure out what happened to and make sense of the tragedy that has happened to their daughter. In both novels, I was overcome with the thoughts of what each mother must be going through to find justice for their daughters.
In The Night Olivia Fell, Abi Kinght is awakened by a call informing her that her daughter has fallen from a bridge and is in the hospital brain dead but also pregnant. Because of state law, the hospital must keep Olivia alive and try to deliver the baby when the pregnancy comes to term. Abi has time to try to investigate and find out why Olivia fell from the bridge. Did she fall, was she pushed or was it something even worse.
I would highly recommend this book!
Formulaic, with all the expected plot elements and twists. That's not a bad thing for light reading (and i read this in a day in January while heavy snow fell).
But for me, it was TOO formulaic for my usual tastes with too many elements of romance. However, as i read, i made a running list of my teen students who would love this book.
WOW! First, let me thank NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy.
Read this on a flight, and it's the first time I was thinking "five more minutes". Ha.
So well written, great suspense, loved the pace. Really, I can't wait to read more from this author. VERY pleased with this book. Would recommend to all.
When I started it I had a moment where I thought "Oh, no, not another twisty faux suspense female drama", but that went away pretty quickly. Really enjoyed this.
Even though I was a bit reluctant to read a novel where a teen child dies, I really enjoyed this story with its ultimately hopeful message about love and connection. Some parts of the plot seemed a bit clunky in the beginning. It could have been a bit more stream-lined in places and some events seemed a little confusing. For instance, later on I went looking back to try and find who had found Olivia after she’d fallen (or been pushed?) off the bridge but was unable to find that detail. Still, there was enough of a mystery about what had happened to overlook minor annoyances.
The characters were likable and drew me in emotionally. Some parts of the POV of 16-year-old Olivia seemed a bit too ‘adult’ to me, not the perspective of a teenager. Overall, though, the story kept me intrigued enough to keep reading to find out what happened. The relationships between the characters were complex and interesting. I don’t regret reading it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery Books for providing me with the ARC.
This book was very good. Told from both Olivia’s an her mother’s side, it tells the story of Olivia’s fall and what led up to it. A mystery - did Olivia fall or was she pushed, and if she was pushed, who pushed her? Captivating, I read this book in a little over a day...very good ending although not necessarily the way you want it to end.
Thank you to NetGalley for a Kindle ARC of The Night Olivia Fell.
No surprise that I'm one of the few readers who did not love this, nor can I say I liked it.
Told in two perspectives; the past from Olivia's voice, the teenage daughter of Abi, who in a fluke of fate, goes in search of her bio-dad; and the present from her mother, Abi's perspective, who investigates how her daughter ended up pregnant and in a coma in a hospital bed.
I felt the story kind of dragged and lacked suspense. It was typical Lifetime-y and there were certain moments when it was a little difficult to suspend disbelief.
First, I didn't like Abi. I understand she's a single parent of an only child but her hovering, her cloying, helicopter parenting was ingratiating and sad. She was one of those women who wanted to be her daughter's BFF.
This is so gross and not just because I was a psychology minor in college.
You are a parent. You are not a buddy. You establish rules and boundaries and offer comfort and support.
I realize Abi had a traumatic childhood with a mentally ill mother and that may have had something to do with her parenting methods but it still rubbed me the wrong way.
I also could not understand why Abi would choose to remain in the same state as her one night stand, considering what a bigwig he eventually became. Did a part of her hope that he would come to claim her as his wife or profess his love to her?
Call me a cynic but I also found it super difficult that Olivia and her baby daddy loved each other or believed they was true love.
I understand they had feelings for each other, had great sexual chemistry but I still have no idea why they got along. This felt more like a plot device intended to add just more drama and lurrvvee to the plot.
Lifetime would love this story; there's teen pregnancy, cyber bullying, a scheming BFF, an angry ex, a troubled half-sib, a bio-dad who is pseudo famous, a stalled police investigation, a secret boyfriend....so nothing new.
I found it hard to finish the last dozen chapters because something about the writing was tedious. Or maybe it was just the characters.
I remembered enjoying Deconstructing Amelia...this one not so much.
Olivia wasn't a bad character; she was kind and understanding, determined and loyal, and a good daughter and a good friend.
Overall, the writing was okay but the characters were annoying and one dimensional and the story lacked excitement, thrills and suspense.
I'm adding an extra star for the happy ending because I like happy endings. I'm not THAT cynical.
Alternating between the perspectives of Olivia, leading up to the night of her fall and Abi (her mother), in the aftermath of the fall, The Night Olivia Fell is a mystery at its core. The book does have suspense, and I wanted to know what happened. However, it was also predictable. I figured out most of it and it was just a matter of reading to see how it all came together.
Olivia's chapters read a little bit like young adult fiction, but they were from the perspective of a 16-year-old girl. Abi came across as desperate (which is to be expected) but also naive. It was frustrating to read her, running blindly trying to figure out what happened, trusting the wrong people.
The story starts with knowing that something happened to Olivia. She was in an "accident" which her mom believes was not an accident, but a deliberate action. Olivia was so severely injured she is brain-dead and would never wake up. However, then it is discovered that she's pregnant. It's pretty easy to figure out who the baby's father is (even though plenty of people Abi talks to lie to her). I enjoyed the book, I enjoyed the story; I just wish there was a little more suspense.
The Night Olivia Fell was a page turner. This book had you guessing until the end. I loved the authors writing style, I definitely want to read more of this author.
Many thanks to Simon & Schuster and Netgalley for providing a copy of this book for review!
My first Netgalley read of the year was a hit! Going into this book, I knew it had great reviews, so my expectations were quite high. Luckily, The Night Olivia Fell mostly lived up to my expectations. Once I started reading, I didn't want to put the book down. It was quick and captured my attention from the very first page, with enough mystery to keep me excitedly reading more.
I'm noticing a bit of a trend I'm loving in modern Thrillers, and it's the addition of emotion! In the past, most of the Thrillers and Suspense novels I would read would mostly be guts, gore, and evil. Today, there are more realistic motives behind the things that happen in these stories, allowing them to hit home on a deeper level. Many new writers have an understanding of psychology, of humanity, that makes each story more fun to dissect. The Night Olivia Fell was the epitome of this trend, allowing me to be immersed in not only Abi's perspective, but Olivia's as well. I was able to get into Abi's shoes as a mother and Olivia's shoes by my past experience of being a teenager myself.
"To feel love was to feel fear -- you just couldn't let it dictate your life."
Though this book had this modern characteristic, it also featured something I love from older thrillers - constant guessing. I enjoy when there are many suspects in a story and I can't place my finger on who's motive seems most relevant. My mind went through a medley of wild ideas, only to have them crossed off the list as the story went on. I was impressed by this debut author's ability in filling those holes slowly and steadily, as this is something many seasoned authors struggle with.
"But being cool and detached were learned traits. Loss and life had taught me to contain my emotions, to stay away from things that could hurt."
In the end, I was impressed with this story's pacing and how well it kept my interest throughout while also making me relate to the characters. I only wished the ending had possibly been slightly more twisty. With the various options and gamut of suspects, I was sure the ending would surprise me. Instead, it was more of the easy path to take with the plot, at least in my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed reading well enough and decided to give this book 4 stars. I look forward to keeping up with Christina McDonald in the future! She has a promising career as a writer ahead of her.
The Night Olivia Fell releases February 5th.
I read a lot of books and give a lot of reviews and sometimes you have to give a review for a book that is so great that you have a hard time putting into words. This review doesn't do this book justice you will really have to read. The moment I started reading this book I was captivated . The story flips between Olivia and her mom Abi telling both sides of the night Olivia fell. The book sent me on an emotional roller coaster between all the mystery of what happened that night to the heartfelt story of a mother and daughter and what a mother will do for their daughter till the very end. I cried at the end of this book for Olivia and Abi. I loved trying to figure out what happened and why. I honestly would give this book 10 stars if I could if you don't read you will be missing out on a great suspenseful and heartfelt book. I look forward to reading anything in the future by this author the writing was perfect. Loved this book. I can't say enough good things about it except for I am very glad I read it!
At first it was a little hard for me to really get into this storyline and want to keep on reading. I finished it though! It was a good read and definitely had an air of mysteriousness to it which kept me wanting to finish the read. But I do love this novel! I would definitely share this with my friends.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy to review. There was I thought great potential for the book. The premise of having your teen daughter in an "accident" that is highly suspicious, find out she's pregnant and must be kept on life support because of far along in the pregnancy the daughter is, and try to find out the real truth of what happened on the bridge, had all kinds of opportunity to work with. The main character grew quite a bit during the story which was a relief because the beginning was so, so, SO focused on the fact that the mom was a single mom. It became annoying and took away from the story to hear over and over how hard and how much sacrificing has to be done in order to be a single mom. The poor me line was particularly irritating when it's revealed that they own and live in a "tiny, 3 bedroom, ranch" house that is in a good neighborhood with good schools. Pretty far away from reality from what most single mom's can afford. The flipping back and forth between sounding off about how hard life has been for a single mom and yet also showing movement and insight as a character was in the end not enough to give the book a higher rating.
Abi learns her daughter has fallen and is brain dead. Then she learns she was pregnant and will remain on life support until the baby is full term. When the police are not quick to investigate, she takes it upon herself to find out what happened the night Olivia fell.
I found the story riveting, emotional, and suspenseful. The writing was beautifully done. The premise heartbreaking. While I did suspect who was involved early on, the directions the writer took me during the novel were so well done that it didn't lessen the impact of the book. Truly a stellar debut and I look forward to reading even more from Christina McDonald in the future.
One of the best books I’ve read in the last several years! Suspenseful, poignant, the story of loss, forgiveness and forging ahead, even when the life you have isn’t what you wanted or expected.
The story of Olivia’s death, told from present day Abi (Olivia’s mother) and from the past Olivia as Abi works to learn the circumstances of Olivia’s fall. Masterfully written and impossible to put down!
Grateful to Gallery, Threshold and Pocket Books for the advanced copy.
