This book was heartbreaking. What Olivia goes through and her mom is devastating, but everything is redeemed at the end
My friend told me about this book and said I had to read it! She was not wrong!!! I am so glad I did. it was one I could not put down!
I was starting to feel like I lost my mind looking at reviews of this after reading it, but luckily I saw a few expressing my sentiments... Did I read the same book as everyone else???
I wanted to love this book. I admired Abi and her dedication to her daughter. I enjoyed some suspenseful moments here and there. But I just kept feeling as if this was a story I had read before with characters I have seen before. Maybe it reminded me of a Dateline or Law and Order episode? My point being, I didn't find any originality in the characters or plot and unfortunately, found most events extremely predictable.
I will give Christina McDonald another try with her next novel, but this one did not impress.
*Thanks to NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Wow! This book was a roller coaster ride. I don't want to give any spoilers, but this is a wonderful and real story about family and love and the things we do for and because of that love, It is also a mystery, as you try to figure out what happened to Olivia. This book kept me up late!
Abi Knight thought her daughter was asleep in her bed when she got the phone call that no parent ever wants to get. Her daughter, Olivia, fell off of a local bridge and the prognosis is grim. Abi raced to the hospital to find out that Olivia was pregnant. She realized that for all of her rules and regulations, her daughter did follow in her footsteps and she knew nothing about her at all. But worst of all, those rules couldn't keep her daughter safe.
For her whole life it had just been Olivia and her mother. She never knew her father, in fact, her mother told her that he had died. But when Olivia has a chance meeting with a girl who looks exactly like her she starts to wonder if her mother has been lying to her. But she has been keeping her own lives. She has a boyfriend who is devoted to her, but it is a boy from her past that truly has her heart. She has to tell them the truth, but at what cost?
The Night Olivia Fell is told from alternating perspectives. Abi and Olivia. Past and present. Abi was obviously shattered at Olivia's accident but left speechless by the news that there was a baby. She assumed that Olivia's boyfriend, Tyler, was the baby's father. But he was adamant that the baby was not his. As the reader, you get the luxury of reading Olivia's side of the story, but Abi does not get that luxury, but she is desperate to know. Even if it means digging up her own painful past, which was the reason why she was so strict with Olivia. She didn't want Olivia to go down the same road that she did. She wanted better for Olivia. For a good chunk of the book, I almost wondered if we were being "parent trapped" because Olivia had a drastic appearance change in the hours before the accident. The author keeps you guessing about the culprit. It could be any number of people, so I wasn't all that surprised when we found out who did it, but I didn't know for sure. -- CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS -- I really liked the way the book ended. There was true closure and I finished the book feeling like all of the characters, including the baby, were going to be okay.
Bottom Line - I really enjoyed The Night Olivia Fell. I thought I had figured out the big twist and was almost smug about it. Instead, the author went a different way and kept me guessing until the end. Because of that, I will be looking forward to more books by Christina McDonald!

What a fantastic book! Very suspenseful. I read it in just a few days! Abi’s teenage daughter is pregnant and brain dead. Olivia is on life support to keep her baby alive. Abi goes to any length to find out what happed the night Olivia fell off the bridge. The police rule it as an accident but Abi is sure it wasn’t.
This book will hit you right in the heart. The Night Olivia Fell is a great book with in depth characters. I was kept guessing until towards the end of the book. The end was in equal parts heart breaking and heart warming at the same time. I really felt for Abi and her pursuit of justice for Olivia. This is a suspenseful book woven with tension, a mother's love and mystery. The Night Olivia Fell will stick with you long after you're done reading it.
Thank you Netgalley and Gallery Books for this ARC!
I was super lucky to receive this #arc of #thenightoliviafell by @christinamac79 last winter from @netgalley and @gallerybooks ! It was such a heart wrenching, page-turner for me! I absolutely loved it and couldn’t put it down! Which makes me super excited for my next arc to read, #behindeverylie !! Starting now... stay tuned!!!
Entertaining and creepy. A very intriguing cover which was what initially piqued my interest I jumped right in to it. Not only is the cover art strangely mesmerising and a little bit creepy, but the story contained within its pages is even more compelling. For once in a long time, the artwork reflects or hints towards the ominous atmosphere that builds up and surrounds you with each new turning of the page. Looking forward to more from Christina McDonald.
I received a Digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I had high hopes for this book, but honestly it felt like a lesser version of Reconstructing Amelia. I was interested but the story was too drawn out, as thought the author wanted to add in side plots just to keep the reader guessing. The characters were too thinly drawn as well, so many of their choices seemed ridiculous or just random. I enjoyed the writing style and would read this author again, but this book was just ok.
This book sucked me in within the first few pages. I love the way the story is told with Abby's point of view as the present and Olivia's point of view in the past leading up to the horrible night. This story pulled at my heart strings and kept me thoroughly engaged throughout the story. I'm looking forward to seeing what this author comes out with next.
Abi Knight's daughter Olivia is brain dead and pregnant and now not only does she have to deal with becoming a grandmother caregiver for her unborn granddaughter but she has to figure out why her daughter is dead and pregnant.
"The Night Olivia Fell " gripped me right away. I had to keep reading... had to find out what happened.
Abi had only wanted the best for her daughter. It appears Olivia had a life her mother knew nothing about. What was Olivia doing up on that bridge in the middle of the night? Was it an accident or was it something else entirely?
This story is told from both Olivia and Abi’s point of view which I really liked. The relationship between mother and daughter was moving and believable. The characters were very well-developed, resulting in an engaging, easy to follow read.
“The Night Olivia Fell” was a well written and addictive suspense novel. I’m excited to read more from Christina McDonald.
The love I have for my daughters exceeds anything else found on this earth. If you ask Thing 1, she’d tell you I love my children more than most other parents love theirs… to the point that it gets annoying and suffocating at times!
Thing 1 and I are especially close and she knows my biggest fear is to get “the call.” Even if you’re the type of parent that spends 20 hours of your 24 hour day complaining about your teenager, you know and fear “the call.” It’s the one that causes your stomach to drop before you even pick up the line, the one that changes your life forever, the one where a complete stranger tells you your child is seriously injured — or dead.
It’s every parent’s worst fear.
Thanks to some past events in my life, I suffer from PTSD. My particular trauma involves harm to my children and so this fear is even more magnified for me (probably why I get all suffocate-y sometimes).
It’s probably also why The Night Olivia Fell was such an emotionally gut-wrenching, roller-coaster ride of a story for me!
Don’t get me wrong, I loved every minute of it… But it was hard to get through. I saw so many similarities between Olivia and Abi’s relationship to my relationship with Thing 1 that it all felt way too personal and real!
Abi and her daughter are obviously super close and Abi loves Olivia fiercely. But then comes the night Olivia falls… suddenly, Abi has to come to terms with the fact that maybe she didn’t really know her daughter at all.
Not only does she have to keep processing that bit of life-altering, earth-shattering news, but her daughter’s pregnant, the police refuse to believe the fall wasn’t an accident, and Abi’s life is just all around spinning out of control! She’s built her entire adult life around Olivia and now she’s gone. Even if she does find out what happened that night, how does she go on???
Final Thoughts:
I’ve got to tell you, this book gave me chills! (And nightmares.) I definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a good suspense novel featuring relatable characters and a totally believable plot!
This is my first but definitely not my last book but this author. I was completely hooked after the first chapter and it kept me guessing until the end. So many surprise twists and turns. I literally read it in less than two days. One of my favorite reads of the year.
I started this book on a Saturday night and finished it the next day. The first night of reading, I stayed up until 3:30 am. The next day, I had a deadline for work, and I really tried so hard to focus on that, but I couldn't help it. I couldn't focus on anything until I finished this book.
The premise is fabulous. A mother receives a call that her teenage daughter has fallen from a bridge, is essentially brain-dead, but they have to keep her on life support because she is pregnant. As the mother reels from this news and does what she can to try to figure out what happened, we flash back (in alternating chapters) and go back in time and hear about the last six months from the daughter's perspective. It's a wonderful structure for a psychological thriller, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
And then there's the ending. It's so wonderful, so full of heart, that I ended up in tears. I closed the book completely and utterly satisfied. An unputdownable thriller that will tug at your heart and move you. Go get this book right now!
Prety good! Wasnt too surprised at who did it but the ending did have some twists and the chase and other suspects etc werent boring like other books can be. Did get a kinda lowkey antichoice vibe but not enough to ruin the story just enough to think for a second.
What a great story! This kept me enthralled and guessing until the very end. Such a tragic story, with a bittersweet ending.
**I received this book from Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books via Netgalley for an honest review**
Olivia is your typical high school aged girl who keeps some secrets from her family and friends. Abi is her mother who is totally unaware of said secrets until the night of the call.
This story expertly intertwines the past and the present. I thought the author did an amazing job of keeping me in the moment while at the same time having me impatient for what happened before or what was going to happen next, I honestly couldn’t decide whose POV I looked forward to the most.
This book had so much. I was constantly frustrated with Olivia and her decision making. I had to keep reminding myself not to be so hard on her because of her age but I found it unfortunate that Olivia wasn’t as smart as she was desperate. I loved Abi’s will. Hate what she had to go through, but I hate that she kept secrets for so long as well. There were a lot of terrible characters throughout which made this story even messier.
Overall this was a book that I couldn’t wait to finish. I honestly didn’t trust anyone and wanted to see if my many guesses paid off. I really enjoyed the mystery throughout.
