A good book. Well written with great characters and a good plot. The storyline flows and the mystery is enjoyable. I highly recommend.,
Jaine Austen is a freelance author who is looking forward to spending Christmas at an amazing Bel Air mansion with her cat, Prozac, and best friend, Lance. Of course, Jaine finds herself in the middle of a murder. She's got some serious detecting to do or she might find herself in jail. This was a delightful cozy murder mystery, which will have you laughing out loud. It was a fun read!
A light and fast cozy mystery to add to the collection! A setting that makes you want to pack up and move there (yep, even with MURDER!). Great plot, atmosphere and fantastic characters- everything that gives a cozy the charm we love! Another GREAT book!
I love the e-mails between Janie and parents. So funny! This book had a lot of great parts. Scotty was a piece of work. I loved all the things Janie wanted to say but actually didn't. A must read!
I have read every book in the Jaine Austen series and they are all funny, light and easy reading cozy mysteries where the murder victims are always evil villians, and it's standard procedure for the protagonist to enjoy a Twinkee or three before the day is out.
Fun to read and there's a cat!
Holiday books are a weakness for me during the late fall into early winter. There is something about good will towards men that warms the heart.
If you read this title and think it is tied to A Christmas Carol, think again. Instead, it is a mystery where the deceased is a penny pinching former child star who many disliked.
While I found some aspects of the title quirky and neat, overall it was not a book that drew me in and had me wanting more.
I was a little disappointed in this latest installment. While I adore this series, there was just something too unlikable in too many of the characters here that made it hard to get through. I do hope the next one is more like the earlier books in this series.
A silly, humorous cozy, best if previous entries in the series have been read.
This was the first book that I read in the Jaine Austen series. My first thought about Death of a Neighborhood Scrooge is that while it's a stand alone mystery, it would have been much, much more enjoyable if I had read previous books in the series. The asides, for example, where what Jaine is thinking is written as if she'd said, kept throwing me for the first half of the book or so. I think I would have enjoyed the character interactions as well if I had read previous books and knew more of their history.
My second thought is how plausible and well plotted parts of this book were! Getting Jaine involved with the Scotty the Scrooge was so seamless, I didn't even blink, and usually, if something is so outrageous, it throws me out of the book, at least for a movement or two.
So my recommendation: If you've read the series before and enjoyed it, you'll enjoy this one. Otherwise, if you're a newbie, I recommend starting with an earlier book. And to that end, I've added the first book, This Pen for Hire to my TBR pile.
Another fun, silly installment to this series! This series makes me laugh with the humorous exchanges between the parents emails. Figuring out the mystery sometimes becomes less important to me because the antics and humorous interacts are so light hearted. Anytime I need a good laugh and want to spend time relaxing. I turn to a Laura Levine book.
These books never cease to amaze me with their wit and humor. I’ve loved these books since the very beginning and I’m always excited to see what crazy stuff Prozac is going to do next! I never want these books to end!
Jaine Austen is spending Christmas in Bel Air thanks to her friend and neighbor Lance. She and her cat Prozac move in and discover anti Christmas Scotty living next door. Jaine reluctantly helps him edit a tv script that he hopes will relaunch his acting career. Everyone in the neighborhood has reason to hate Scotty and Jaine is on the suspect list when he is found dead bashed in the head with a frozen yule log cake. Jaine does a good investigation to clear her name and the mystery is pretty well written. It's funny and an easy read for a busy Christmas season. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Jaine Austen and her friend Lance have a fun friendship. When they housesit for the Christmas holidays, and find a former child actor next door, there are a lot of moments of levity in this mystery.
This is a great series. I love Laura Levine!!! This was Christmasy without Christmas overload. Really good and Jaine, as always, is very likeable. Can’t wait for more from this series.
This is part of a long running series, I hadn't read any of the other books but that wasn't a problem.
There's a murder of an unpopular man and plenty of suspects. Jaine's parents emails are quite funny and the best part of the book. It was an okay and easy read but it wouldn't encourage me to buy any of the other books in the series.
Laura LeVine is one of my favorite authors. I love getting to see Jaine, Prozac, and lance again. This is a great book and took about a day to read because I couldn’t put it down. I recommend this series to everyone and will continue to do so with this latest addition.
Laura Levine is at the top of her game in Death of a Neighborhood Scrooge, the 16th installment in the Jaine Austen series. Levine is amazingly funny, and readers will find themselves laughing throughout. There is, however, mystery and suspense; readers will be unable to put the book down, not only because of the humor, but because Jaine is losing Prosac’s (her cat) loyalty to a neighbor whose husband has just been murdered. Jaine, of course, investigates the murder, and keeps readers guessing who-done-it.
This is one of the most delightful series out there, and is suitable for all ages. Most readers will seek out all the books in the series because this one is so enjoyable.
Death of a Neighborhood Scrooge by Laura Levine is the 16th book in the Jaine Austen cozy mystery series. I used to devour these books, but much like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, the repetition of the various gags have become stale and I found the last book so offensive that I toyed with the idea of quitting cold turkey. But, a series you've been invested in for 15 books is not a habit that's easy to break, and I got an ARC for this one so...
This time out Jaine and Lance are Christmas house-sitting in fabulous Bel Air, next door to a sour, cheap-skate former child star who turns up dead. There's no lack of suspects, but the cops seem to be zeroing in on Jaine. While the gags have grown stale, Levine returns to form with this book crafting a good mystery with plenty of suspects to choose from. There's a backhanded slap to the romance genre here (because, of course there is - what the actual hell?!) that annoyed me and the ending is pretty abrupt, but it didn't make me frothing at the mouth angry like the last book, so win? I guess? Also, the final chapter is extremely intriguing but my gut tells me Levine will self-destruct the development off page when the next book comes out. Which, mores the pity. If she sees it through it may spice up the next entry past the usual, quickly growing tired, gags. For fans only. I'm waffling between a C+ and B-.
When Jaine Austen and her cat, Prozac, head off to Bel Air to house sit during the holidays with her bff, Lance, she expects a quiet holiday full of upscale shopping and helping Lance get over his latest broken heart with lots and lots of chocolate. When their next door neighbour, a one-time child actor and full-time curmudgeon, is murdered, Jaine becomes the main suspect but there are plenty of people who despised him including both his present and ex wife. Jaine decides the only way to prove her innocence is to unmask the culprit herself. Unfortunately, her sleuthing skills are a bit off, what with Prozac deciding to transfer his affections elsewhere and Lance's efforts to find her a date, not to mention the emails her parents are sending her about their adventures on their holiday cruise.
Death of a Neighborhood Scrooge by Laura Levine is, for the most part, a fun, fast, and humorous holiday cosy. At times, it did seem to drag and the humour was sort of hit and miss for me but, overall, I did enjoy it especially her parents' emails - easily the funniest part of the book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review</i>
This latest Jaine Austen caper was hysterical! I laughed out loud quite alot and cringed with how bad the neighborhood Scrooge was. Jaine and her bestie Lance are house sitting for a client over the holidays and wouldn't you know it? Her feline troublemaker gets loose and hijinks ensue as they meet the neighbors where the story takes place. Along the adventure, Jaine's kitty Prozac, has taken up with the neighbor, Lance has put her profile on the internet to get her holiday dates, and those attempts at dieting go out the window as Jaine seems to eat her way through the holidays.
Oh, and there's a murder. A great read for a chilly fall day curled up in the recliner.
A copy of this was given to me by NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts.
