Definitely a great book for Christians looking to explore their struggle with envy and jealousy. I was definitely struck by the chapter that dealt with art and jealousy cuz I don't typically think of the two as being as overlapping as the book clearly shine the light on.
This was an enlightening bible study book. It would work well for a group bible study because there are questions at the end of each chapter to recap and encourage conversation.
The author explains the difference between jealousy and envy. I never thought of myself as an envious person, but when I learned what the bible has to say about envy I realized I was struggling with it. The author also points out how raging against inequality is a form of envy. After reading this book I can understand the selfish aspect of feelings I did not previously realize were envious.
I have read many Bible study books on joy and being content. However, this book listed seven sources of envy and explained how they can be stealing your joy. This was a unique point of view in comparison to other books I have read. I would recommend this book for an individual or group bible study.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What’s the difference between jealousy, covetousness, and envy? You may be surprised to realize that you experience all three. In Seeing Green: Don't Let Envy Color Your Joy, Tilly Dillehay explores the different forms that envy can take and the sneaky ways they get into our hearts. Speaking as someone who envied her sisters for many years, Tilly uncovers seven kinds of envy and shows us how to combat it with God’s word.
Know God – The best way to cure envy is to gaze at Someone who transcends all earthly glory. As we gaze at Jesus and spend time in God’s word, we learn how to rejoice with those who possess great talents and gifts instead of envying them for it.
Know yourself – It takes guts to look at the insidious mess of unknown emotion that dwell deep in the heart and call it what it is: envy. When we know the forms of envy we are prone to, we can focus on Scripture and godly training to help us manage our envy.
Run your race – Each of us were given specific gifts and talents to use in this life. We need to focus on developing our skill and using them for the glory of God instead of envying our neighbor for what they have or how they use their gifts.

"Seeing Green" takes you on a journey through the many faces of envy that steals our joy and our identity. Tilly Dillehay first explains what borrowed glory is and how Envy relates to glory. She almost seemingly proposes one of the most heart-cutting definitions of envy. She talks about seven specific ways we struggle with Envy: Body, Charm and influence, Intellect, options, creativity, competence and control, and relationship. Seeing Green is changed my point of view of Envy, DIllehay gives practical tools on how to overcome many of the envy struggles we have. This book is not like many other books in that 1.) it talks extensively about envy and the dangers of envy in a relatable and reliable manner. I would recommend this book to any and everyone. Dillehay's writing skills remind me of the great C.S Lewis. She paints pictures with mere words in ways that only a handful of people in the world can. In my top 20 reads of 2018 for sure.
Envy is something that most people wouldn't want to admit to themselves, let alone another person, that they battle with. It's ugly and no good can come from it, yet throughout our lives it's hard to deny that at times we see green when instead we should feel love and joy for the successes and blessings gifted to those around us.
Not being familiar with Tilly Dillehay before reading her book I have been blown away by the way this book is written and structured. Many Christian books tip too heavily to one side; either too much anecdote and not enough scripture, or a flood of scripture with only scraps of the author's voice and realistic stories to help the reader relate. Tilly balances this well, her voice is strong and her knowledge of scripture and the way it's used to strengthen her in-depth exploration of envy, why we feel it, what forms it takes, and what we can do to combat it make this an extremely convicting, useful and engrossing read.
I was so excited when I spotted "Seeing Green" by Tilly Dillehay. I'm a spiritual person but I'm not religious. However, there are important people in my life who are extremely religious and I respect their faith. When I read that "Seeing Green" was a book that is interwoven with religious tenets, I didn't let that stop me. Moreover, I had a strong feeling "Seeing Green" would help me and it has.
It's powerful and healing to read about another person's experience with envy and how to cope with it. I found the references to Scripture to be interesting and I can discuss them with my close friend, a lay minister. Envy diminishes the soul and affects our ability to serve others. I'm grateful to Ms. Dillehay for writing about such an important topic that rarely gets the attention it's most worthy of receiving. This book will be of enormous, uplifting help to readers. It's a literary balm to the spirit. Highly recommended.
