Actually 3.5 stars. I was greatly anticipating this book as I love the last one by the same authors. It didn't pan out the way I'd hoped, but I still really enjoyed it and will definitely recommend to my friends who like this genre.
The book bounces back and forth between Dr. Shields - the psychologist and Jess - the "study subject". I always enjoy books where you get to "hear" from multiple characters. Dr. Shields was never very enduring and I really went back and forth throughout the book on my feelings for Jess.
The book brings up many ethical dilemmas and it really adds to the characters and storyline.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martins Press for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I love what these two authors create! The stories wrap me in and I can't stop reading! The ending was a little "blah", but I didn't mind as much since the journey to the end was so great.I can't wait to read their next novel!
From the start, I was pulled in and found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what the next twists and turns would be. I could not put this down!
Thanks so much to St. Martin's Griffin and Netgalley for providing me with an early copy for honest review.
An Anonymous Girl was Very Good! Very Good I say. I had already read and really enjoyed The Wife Between Us, so I was excited to see what Hendricks and Pekkanen brought to the table next. An Anonymous Girl did not disappoint.
I was gripped throughout the whole book. I just needed to know what was going to happen. I was hooked. There was so much suspense, so much craziness.
There were a lot of small twists in An Anonymous Girl instead of one big, shocking one, which is pretty much the complete opposite of how their The Wife Between Us was. It contained characters that were very compelling to read about. I feel like I can't say much because I don't want to spoil anything at all. I want every reader to experience this for themselves without knowing too much about it. I think that would be the most fun way to read it.
I'm still unsure of how I feel about the ending. There was so much build up, so much tension, so much crazy, that when the ending came, it just seemed kind of tame. I mean, I liked the ending, I guess I was just expecting a great big, mighty, not-what-I-was-expecting shock, and that didn't really happen. I think the ending did fit the story though.
An Anonymous Girl was very, very good and I definitely recommend it. I felt like I couldn't look away while reading it. I'm definitely excited to see what Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen come out with next. Read It!!
BOOKCITEMENT LEVEL 4.3/5
Note to Self: Be Very Wary of Morality Studies
I'm not really a fan of epistolary. In fact, I hate epistolaries. And because of that very reason, this was a little put off for me at the start.
But the twists in the story kept me bringing back to it. A perfect psychological thriller for a weekend read, I would recommend it to anyone, whether he likes diary entry format or not.
Engaging read!! A very unique concept, with unpredictable twists and turns! Every question you have is answered in this well written thriller!
I liked this book okay, but didn't think that it lived up to all that I expected. It wasn't too difficult to figure out who the real "bad guy" was, and other parts were too predictable at times, too. I felt like Jess's character wasn't always written consistently - here she is, barely making it, struggling as this web tightens around her, and then all of a sudden she is into point/counterpoint with Dr. Shields. And although the epilogue was my favorite part, again, Jess had changed too much to make it believable. Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
Wow this book was so good it kept me on my toes and it was such a unique plot line seriously I finish this book in today and rolling took me two days because I had to work. Main character was such a relatable girl that really this could have been any of us we can wait for solving her work she’s trying to support her family and her younger sister so she signs up no steal another girl in play Khalid another girl spot in a psychology study. What she doesn’t know is that the psychologist put it on the study becomes infatuated and almost obsessed with her and then puts her through a weird series of tests. This book kept me on my toes the entire time I was so stressed out while reading it but oh man I was so into it it was the perfect park.

This book was a little like a roller coaster ride in that just when you think it's about to be over or you have everything figured out, the ride jerks you in a different direction! After reading Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's first book The Wife Between Us and enjoying it, I was very excited to read this book. It is definitely not like any other book I've read - in a good way. I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen, which happens often when I'm reading books, but this book definitely had me guessing the whole time and trying to figure out how it was going to end. I was a tiny bit disappointed with the ending of the book but overall it was an enjoyable read and kept me engaged the whole time I was reading it. I can't wait for their next book!
Another home run from Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. They know how to write together so that the story stays compelling and keeps you guessing on every level. I'll read anything these two put out -- no doubt.
I really enjoyed this thriller. It was female focused with a unique plot, both things that I gravitate towards. It got me out of a reading slump and I have already recommended it to friends.
A story that kept your reading in hopes that something would happen. I am still not sure who the title is referring to. However, the story of deceit, cheating and gullibility is what keeps you going. How can some be so manipulative? How can someone be so naive?
I was a bit worried that this second thriller by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen would be a let down because of all the hype but it did not disappoint. I was drawn in from the very start as the two main characters and narrators were complex and it was so fun to watch their interactions and interwoven stories unfold. The introduction Dr. Shields’ husband provided more depth and tension and left me questioning some of my initial assumptions.
I am not sure this had as many twists and turns as The Wife Between Us but it was just as good and for me maybe even slightly better.
My mind is a sieve these days. I really need to be better about writing my reviews immediately instead of 6 weeks (or more) later! What I can tell you is that I found this to be quite the page turner. The concept is pretty unbelievable, and yet I was able to suspend disbelief pretty easily. The dual narrator things works pretty well here, and I love the use of an actual psychologist and psychological issues for a psychological suspense novel - it definitely adds to that whole narrator reliability things that's so popular. It also added an element of complexity and insightfulness to a usually plot-heavy genre. To be honest, I can't remember how the book ended, though I have a vague memory of it being weaker than the rest of the book, but I do know I loved the ride. Sorry I don't have more!
An Anonymous Girl is an intriguing psychological thriller that had me hooked from the start. Told from the point of view of the main character, Jessica, AND her psychiatrist Dr. Shields which brought a new level to psychological drama.
When tested on reactions for real life ethical situations, Dr. Shields decides to set up a case study which quickly turns into manipulation before Jessica can even figure out what is going on. But who is really playing who here? Jessica wasn't even originally supposed to be part of this study. Funny how a story about ethical dilemmas starts off with a deceptive decision.
I did find myself getting distracted and losing interest a bit through the last half of the book. Just because someone is an expert in human actions/psychology doesn't mean they can properly assume someone's future actions. Although the parts of the book discussing Dr. Shields were captivating at first and she is clearly intelligent, her overconfidence in her subject matter turned into monotonous ramblings at time. Enough that I started to mistrust her. So bravo to the authors but I'm not sure that was exactly the effect they were going for.
Go into this book knowing that real psychology is at play here and come out of it wondering who can you really trust.
An excellent second novel from the author duo of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. While the twists were not quite as shocking and unpredictable as The Wife Between Us, I thoroughly enjoyed An Anonymous Girl and would definitely recommend it. I will be looking forward to what’s next from these brilliant ladies.
Like the first book, this story was enthralling and provoking- my favorite. The alternating POV really added to the mystery and the thrill making it an even funner read that I was hesitant to put down. Though I enjoyed this one immensely, I have the same complaint I had with the other book. The twists fell kind of flat to me. Maybe because there was so much going on and I was really expecting to be blown out of the water that when the twists came they were just ....meh. Otherwise a fantastic read.
I decided to give Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen a second chance, after their debut, The Wife Between Us left me disappointed earlier this month. Fortunately, I enjoyed An Anonymous Girl much more than its predecessor. It follows 28-year-old Jess, a makeup artist in NYC struggling to make ends meet, who is dealing with a few heavy secrets from her past. When she learns about an ethics and morality study which provides participants with a generous compensation for their time, she jumps at the opportunity to make some easy money. Soon though, Jess’s participation moves beyond the structured questions, as she is selected by the researching psychologist, Dr. Lydia Shields, to engage in a more in-depth study. It soon becomes obvious that something more than a simple study is underway, and Jess is tangled in a web of manipulation and deceit.
This was an entertaining read, and while I did have to suspend my disbelief a few times, I was fully engaged in this game of cat and mouse, and finding out the truth. I had a love/hate relationship with the characters, especially Dr. Shields, and while her sections read as a bit robotic and distant, it fit perfectly with her cool and calculated demeanor. I predicted some of the twists, but that did not take away from my overall enjoyment of this psychological thriller.
4 stars for this highly addictive, un-put-down-able book.
The magic between Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen is real. Believe in it, embrace it and look for it everywhere. I devoured this book in 2 sittings, I couldn’t get enough and it is easy to see why this seems to be the “It” book of 2019.
However… This book didn’t fully hit the mark. Before you start thinking that this is not a positive review, I’m going to stop you right there. I loved this book and I highly recommend it. But, I read a lot of books in this genre, and I mean A LOT. So while this book had me enraptured, the writing flawless, there were just some things that kept it from being a “knock my socks off” kind of book.
With that said, Part One was off the chains. I read Part One in a complete sitting. I was so engrossed in this story and what was really going on with Dr. Shields and what Jessica’s part was. But once you get a sense of what is going on, there isn’t any surprises and it really was what you thought. There were a few “oh” moments, but the most part the story unfolded exactly like you were thinking it would.
And while it is definitely not fair to compare books, I am going to anyway. Because The Wife Between Us was just as addicting but had that major “holy crap” moment (you know the one!) and even the ending had that satisfying little twist. There really wasn’t anything happening in An Anonymous Girl that you didn’t already figure out on your own. And because of that, this book was 4 stars for me.

This was an excellent read. Really unique story with lots of twists and turns. Jessica is a young struggling make-up artist, who comes across an opportunity to make some quick cash- entering a psychology study at the local college. What she doesn't realize is exactly what she is signing up for. Entering into a twisted and complicated relationship with Dr. Shields. A woman who is on a mission to find out if her husband cheated on her, and if he is willing to do it again....
