The suspense in this book built the whole way through. I didn’t see the end coming however the end felt rushed.
*4.5 stars ✨
I was excited to see how I would like this since I’ve heard wonderful things about their first book. Spoiler alert: I liked it! When Jessica goes to a testing site that has questions about ethics and morality, she has no idea of what trouble she just stepped into. She goes again because the money is easy and she’s needing it. But soon the questions become harder and she meets the doctor that’s behind them. After meeting Dr. Shields she steps into a web that’s full of deceit, but who can she trust. Jessica’s life starts spinning out of control and she needs to get the answers to know the truth. This was highly entertaining and now I cannot wait to read The Wife Between Us. The only part that was a little less than good was the final standoff—I guess I wanted more than what happened but the story was.

I could not connect to this book at all. I made it to 36% before throwing in the towel. I wont force myself to finish a book.
This does not mean others won't love it. It just wasn't for me personally.
I read The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and really enjoyed it. An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks was very good as well, I would not say there was a huge plot twist during the book but small twists throughout. It was well written and the back and forth of point of views kept the book interesting. The plot to An Anonymous Girl is very different than many of the books in its genre, which is very refreshing. I loved the psychological and moral aspects of the book.
Cover art (design and how appropriate it is for the book): Great cover art, one of the things that drew me in, similar enough to The Wife Between Us to make it a "signature" for Greer Hendricks
Length (too short, too long, just right): Just right
Twist factor: Pretty good I did not expect it, I didn't get the chills during twist reveals but it was still interesting!
3.5 rounded up to 4

This book!!!!!!! If you thought they knocked it out the park with their first book then you will not be disappointed with their sophomore book. The authors wrote a book with a complex female protagonist and her subject. As with their first book, the plot twist will have you scouring the book to see where you missed the hints. Very well written and impeccable in execution. Would definitely recommend.
This book was such an addictive read. I loved the premise and twisty plot. I was drawn into the story from the beginning.
Jessica is a makeup artist struggling to make ends meet. She is coming up to the end of the month and is forced to decide whether to pay her rent or help with her sister’s medical bills that her parents are not aware even exist. She overhears her client talking about a study that will pay $500. Jessica finds out the information and the next day shows up at Dr. Shield’s study asking to join. It is a study on morality and the questions quickly become increasingly personal. Then Dr. Shield asks Jessica to begin participating in role playing activities. Red flags begin to wave, but Jessica needs to decide how much she will take for the money and when enough is enough. A really cool concept with alternating narratives. I loved the book, but was disappointed in the simplicity of the ending.

to me
Jessica Ferris has stumbled upon a new study being held at a nearby college campus through one of her customers a Beauty Buzz. The study is hosted by Dr. Shields, who Jessica has never met, but is willing to answer an assortment of ethics questions for in her study in exchange for generous compensation. Questions like, could you tell a lie without feeling guilty? The questions start here and build to a more invasive level of inquiry. Despite her initial hesitation, Jessica needs the money to support her sister’s treatment, so she carries on.
Soon Jessica finds herself growing closer to Dr. Shields than she ever imagined. Her every secret is revealed and the more she shares, the more her paranoia grows. Sessions of questions evolve into outings directed by Dr. Shields and before she knows it Jessica is in too deep. Can she escape the control that Dr. Shields has over her?
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have come together yet again to create a novel that will keep you on edge! There are twists and turns at every step of the way within AN ANONYMOUS GIRL, as we watch the relationship between Jessica Ferris and Dr. Shields evolve. This starts out innocently enough with Jessica participating in a survey type study, however, they soon evolve to Jessica being directed to go on outings by Dr. Shields. These outings and survey answers create a bond between the two that might not be for the better and Jessica finds herself stuck in a web of truth and lies.
I am yet again impressed by the way two authors can come together to create such a seamlessly told story. I was a huge fan of THE WIFE BETWEEN US and the magic that Hendricks and Pekkanen created in that book has easily come back again in AN ANONYMOUS GIRL. I was less shocked by some of the twists that the authors chose to throw into their latest book, but I was still left with a delightful read that kept me hooked. I was so entranced by this story that I ended up splitting my time between the audiobook and reading my physical copy. The audiobook is outstanding and truly set the stage for my love for this book! The narration is flawless and intoxicating. Once I picked up the physical copy outside of my commute I found myself reading in the narrators voices.
One of the things that makes this book such a great read, as both a physical book and an audiobook, is the dual narration. The book flips between Jessica and Dr. Shields, allowing the reader to gain insight to each of their points of view. If I was forced to pick a favorite, I would probably go with Dr. Shields’ sections simply because they are so devious. I loved getting both sides of this complicated story through the main players.
I highly recommend adding this book to your TBR if you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced thriller to keep you entertained and binge reading into the late hours of the night! Another successful release from Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen!
Jessica Farris seizes on an opportunity to make a few hundred bucks by sneaking onto a psychology study about modern morality and ethics. (What could go wrong? 😉) What begins as a questionnaire morphs into an immersive experiment when Dr. Shields takes an extreme interest in Jess's (aka "Subject 52") candidness. As the study intensifies, Jess sees moral dilemmas in every decision she makes. All situations are potential tests. Jess's paranoia causes her to waver in her commitment to Dr. Shields's study, but she needs the cash and she sees a chance for absolution. Dr. Shields is always quick to ease Jess's concerns, but the doctor isn't being entirely honest about their motivations--perhaps Dr. Shields is looking for a form of absolution as well.
I have a tendency to agonize over every decision in life, so the premise immediately hooked me! I like how Hendricks and Pekkanen play with assumptions. It's amazing how the mind fills in the blanks and how one piece of information can completely alter the thought process. Like with their first joint novel The Wife Between Us, my favorite part was the protagonist. Jess is burdened by her secrets and she is desperately trying to make amends for past mistakes. The weight of her secrets and her desperation to unload all of her guilt makes her easy to manipulate, but perhaps she's harder on herself than anyone else would be. The antagonist didn't intrigue me as much. Dr. Shields was too robotic and all-knowing to be interesting for long.
I liked reading An Anonymous Girl, but it didn't excite me and it hasn't stuck with me over time. I didn't think of it as twisty at all, to the point that I thought overlooked something big. After reading a review that outlined each twist, I don't think I did. Maybe one character always being one step ahead weakened the reveals for me ("You think you're smart, but I already knew muhahaha." type stuff). I hit my deceit limit and lost interest. The focus on the character motivation I was most intrigued by <spoiler>(applying the scientific method on matters of the heart)</spoiler> shifted into something even more mundane by the end. <spoiler>One boring dude seemed to be able to attract every beautiful woman in his radius!</spoiler>
This story brings focus to the ramifications of the small moral choices we make all the time, sometimes without even thinking. Both Jess and Dr. Shields are proof that seemingly insignificant actions can have life-altering consequences. People will often make immoral concessions to protect themselves or the ones they love. Can an unethical choice sometimes be justified? An Anonymous Girl was not a page-turner for me, but it wasn't a bad way to spend a few hours.
I would like to thank the publisher, Martin's Press, and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I have to say wow!!!! I read the previous collaboration of authors, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, "The Wife Between Us" and I really liked it. But Wow, with this one the have outdone their selves.
The book is suspenseful and the change of narrators is very clever. This book will keep you up past your bedtime!
I highly recommend this Psychological Thriller! One desperate decision leads to a whole lot of trouble, anxiety, danger and an fierce will to survive and win!
5 stars! Thoroughly enjoyed this. A captivating psychological thriller with many heart pounding twists and turns. You won't know who to trust until the very end. Thanks for the opportunity to read this, Netgalley!
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read a copy of the book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I am wondering why I did not read their first book, definitely picking it up now. This was a great suspenseful book! I literally started it in the morning while having my coffee and then could not wait to get home from work to read it and then stayed up late to finish it. Loved it! A fresh take on the suspense genre, great characters and so many twists and turns.
Jessica is a make-up artist who earns a living doing make-up for people and knowing her client is the most important part of her job, when she overhears about a job that pays $500 for an interview she copies the info and goes in the place of the girl who planned on blowing it off anyway. She finds out it is a study on morality and thinks that this is going to be easy money. What ensues is a roller-coaster ride of events; from her first round of questions in the university to a heart-stopping conclusion, I was on the edge of my seat
If you enjoy a thriller, read this book. Cannot wait for the next book by these two authors!
I have mixed feelings about this one…
This isn’t your typical thriller but it is a predictable one. The story was definitely intriguing and I wanted to know more but mid way it fell flat and I was no longer entertained. The cat and mouse game between Jess and Shields was getting old. Dr. Shields’ agenda to uncover her husbands truth was pretty extreme to me. It showed her obsessiveness and her unstable mental health.
Jess’ naivety was infuriating and I wanted to reach into the book and shake her. Dr. Shields was a creep and needed some psych evaluation herself. Jess’ develops from a naive money hungry girl to a powerful woman who comes on top. I understand her motives and I admire that she continued the studies to get some cash for her future and her families. Personally, I would’ve nipped it in the bud long before Jess did it.
At first Dr. Shields’ craziness was intense but after a while it just got out of hand this lady was bat sh*t crazy. The ending was predictable and something I figured out long before. I didn't put Dr. Shields’ actions past her, honestly. This woman was devoted, determined, and had an agenda.
This is my first read by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. I’m tempted to try out their first book ‘The Wife Between Us’ with the hopes that it is better than this one.
I debated between two and three stars on this one and went with 3 mainly bc I enjoyed the beginning and the ending...it was the middle that bogged me down to the point that I was tempted to not finish. The fact that it pulled me back in toward the end merited the extra star.
First off, the way the story was written, it jumped back and forth between points of view...Jessica for a chapter or two, then Dr. Shields for a chapter and so on. The authors could have easily defined each chapter as to who was doing the telling and it would’ve been much less confusing. There were chapters, especially at the beginning, that I would be a page in and have to re-read bc I would figure out it was the other person narrating.
Secondly, there was a lot of repetitiveness going on, especially with Dr. shields and it just got boring. It was a short book anyway but some of the rambling could’ve been cut out.
Thirdly, I just kept thinking how stupid Jessica must be just to follow blindly along doing anything she was told to do. I realize money was an issue for her but still, it seemed pretty unrealistic at times.
I did love the beginning of the book...the authors did a great job of drawing me in from the get-go. As the story unfolded, they also did a great job keeping me guessing. I would have liked for Ben to have a bigger part - I think he could’ve added to the storyline. I liked that Jane kept mustering the strength to keep trying to figure things out.
The ending was a bit contrived and predictable but I guess that needed to be. All in all, I’m glad I read it, but was just a bit disappointed and ready to move on.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book had so many twist and turns in it. I loved that it kept me guessing and wanting to read more so I would know what was going on with Jess, Thomas, and Dr. Lydia Shields. It starts out where Jess sneaks into a psychological study under the pretense of being someone else. The study is on Ethics and Morality and Jess just knows that it is a way to earn an easy $500. Upon entering the study, she has to give her real name and answer questions on a computer screen. As things progress she becomes the main subject of Dr. Shields' study and things progress from there. She meets Dr. Shields to find out she is a woman and is looking for more from Jess then just answering questions on a computer screen. Dr. Shields sets Jess up to meet with men and see if they will cheat on their wives with her but there is more to it then that. Dr. Shields is testing Jess and her husband Thomas at the same time but at first no one realizes this.
3.5 The book was a page turner and kept me interested. It’s all about mind games and manipulation of the therapist, her husband and the main character Jess. The book however did not shock me at all or have a suspenseful twist to it so I was a little let down. Overall it was a good read, but not mind blowing.
Another hit by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen! I loved this one even more than The Wife Between Us. An Anonymous girl was good on suspense and intrigue. Fast paced with enough tidbits throughout to keep to guessing as to the motives and intentions of the characters. It was a fun twist on the client-therapist theme. Highly recommend.
While doing makeup for a college student, Jessica Farris learns of a psychological study that is being conducted at the college. When she hears that they would be earning $500 and that the girl isn’t going to do it, Jessica sneaks the information off of her phone.
She shows up at the study as if she really is Subject 52. Ironically it is a study on ethics and morality. With probing questions, Jessica, opens up about herself and difficult decisions that she’s had to make. She feels connected to Dr. Shields and relishes the feedback she gets to her responses.
When Dr. Shields gives her the opportunity to take the experiment from the classroom to the real world with the promise of more money, Jessica agrees.
While we learn about Jessica through her answers to the questions, we also are treated to a narrative from Dr. Shields. Dr. Shields, who reveals a motive much more sinister than a study on morals and ethics.
This book draws you in from the very beginning and doesn’t let you go. I love books that dive deep into disturbed minds, and with the narrative from Dr. Shields, we get a glimpse into what happens when love becomes obsessive. When trust is broken.
This novel is a slow burn, slowly unfolding the story. If you’re looking for a fast paced, lots of action, then this book might not be for you. But if you like a steady psychological thriller, you will love this!
I received an ARC of the book.
This book blew me away from the very beginning!! There was absolutely NO WAY I could put it down once I started it, I needed to know what was going to happen. I found it equally character and plot driven. It was one of the most intriguing thrillers I have read it quite some time and would absolutely consider it a must read if you love this genre.
I love to read a psychological thriller with an unreliable narrator and side characters who are so questionable you can’t trust anyone. Jess was a great pick for the main character of this one. She really had me questioning her motives at first, but I saw myself reading through her pretty quickly, or so I thought. The scenes of her doing the research survey were awesome and helped you realize who she is as a person and exactly how she feels about herself.
This is by far the book you need in your life right now, I can exclaim it enough! The mysterious aspects of the story were right on par with the psychological aspects, which made it quite the thrilling read. My attention was solely focused on this book the whole time I was reading it (which is hard when you read multiple books at the same time haha).
This was just okay. It took way too long for it to get interesting and then the interesting part just dragged on. I really just wanted to finish it to see how it ended and the ending wasn't that great or satisfying.
