This book was a trip - a women decides to make some extra money and ends up a pawn in a therapists evil scheme to mess with her husband. This thriller will have you up all night!
A complex thriller the likes of which I have never come across. So many twists and turns that I never guessed the ending. This book was graciously provided in exchange for an honest review.
I know I am in the minority here and I am glad. This book started out better than I expected since it was labeled a slow burner. But half way I stated losing interest. I have to say I thought it was better than The Wife Between us but not a "OMG you have to read this book" type of book for me. There were some twists and turns but no shockers, not enough for me anyway.
I was provided an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Expected publication January 8th, 2019!
After reading and absolutely loving The Wife Between Us earlier this year written by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, I was sooooo excited to read An Anonymous Girl. The Wife Between Us was quite possibly one of the top 3 thrillers I read this year, and I couldn't wait to see what this author duo had in store for their next book.
Unfortunately, it fell a little bit flat for me. It was just "okay" which is definitely NOT how I felt after reading The Wife Between Us. I was expecting to be absolutely blown away. I wasn't.
The concept of this book was intriguing. Jess is a struggling makeup artist in New York City. When she stumbles upon a research study about morality and ethics that pays a pretty penny to participants, she is all in. However, things start to get a little strange when Jess meets Dr. Shields, the primary investigator for the study. Dr. Shields is beautiful, elegant, well-spoken, and Jess finds herself completely under her spell. But, everything is not as it seems. What follows is a game of cat and mouse. Who can Jess trust? Who is telling the truth? Who is lying?
Okay, so the first 40% of this book was fabulous. I was roped in immediately. Loved the concept of the research study and couldn't wait to see what happened. However, right around the halfway point, I found myself having a hard time with the "believability factor." The story started to get a little bit far-fetched and extravagant. Some of the decisions that the main characters made were outlandish, and I felt like the plot got a little convoluted. I waited painstakingly for a shocking twist or some sort of climax to compliment the slow burn that ensued, but unfortunately it just kind of fizzled out. I didn't find the ending all that shocking. Definitely didn't have the same "feels" that I had with The Wife Between Us where my jaw was literally on the floor on multiple occasions.
All of that being said, it was still a good book. It just wasn't mind blowing. And with the saturation of the mystery/thriller genre, a book really has to have a knock-out plot to stand out. I think this one will unfortunately be a little bit forgettable.
I still have mad love for Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, and will read their books in the future. I wish I could have given this book a better review, but just can't.
-I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley, Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen, and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to review.-
5 magical stars! This is the type of book that drew me to thrillers. Full of twist and turns, but noting too outrageous. It never had the feeling of being rushed and never drug on. This was a page turner that had me flying through the pages trying to figure out who to trust and where the story was going to go. This book comes out in January and definitely a great way to start the new year!
I loved this book! From the very beginning I was drawn into trying to figure out what the point was of Dr Shields study and as the book went on I was desperately trying to figure out how her mind worked. It kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.
Hendricks and Pekkanen wrote a fabulous book in The Wife Between us. I was wondering if this book would be as amazing and I can say that it truly is! This story hooked me from the beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat turning the paged anxiously waiting to see what was coming next. The story is written from two different perspectives, the protagonist and antagist. Very exciting and the storyline is so very unique. Yes it's about infidelity but more involved than that . Very complicated and creative. Highly recommended! Go pre order it now.
I want to thank Netgalley and Martin Press for the opportunity to give an honest review for an advanced copy.
This book has an original plot. I loved that it gave a twist to a sort of overused storyline. The story is definitely a slow burn and a buildup. Slow enough in fact that I set it down several times but good enough that I picked it back up each time. The characters are few in this book so you get to know them well and while I saw the end coming, I was certain that I couldn’t have figured it out completely. There was a tiny twist at the end that kind of help redeem the simplistic conclusion for me. Overall an enjoyable read.
When makeup artist Jess, strapped for cash, pretends she's one of her clients and participates in a research project probing ethical dilemmas, she thought she had serendipitously found a great way to earn some good money. But she soon learns she is a pawn in a very serious game, and has put herself and her career in deep jeopardy. A tense psychological thriller with vividly drawn characters and plot surprises to the very end, An Anonymous Girl is a compelling read.
I do not understand all of the 5 star reviews! This book had an interesting, original premise, but I actually found it slow and a bit draggy. The story is told from two points of view . . . Dr. Shields, a manipulative therapist, and Jess, an unlucky participant in a supposed morality study. It tries to build up to an intense psychological thriller but never quite gets there. Maybe too much of a cat and mouse game with all of the back and forth between the two women characters. I found myself putting it down for days at a time and forcing myself to finish it in order to give an honest review. I thought the authors’ “The Wife Between Us” was much better and hope that any future endeavor will, at least, live up to that one.
An Anonymous Girl ~ whoa! wham! I loved this book and could not put it down. Cat and Mouse? One twist and turn after the other. It all relates around an academic study, a young girl poses a spot and suddenly caught up in a dangerous, scary and sort of pycho game. So intriging and mysterious, I 'm picturing a movie with Glenn Close!
Totally recommending this! #netgalley.com #AnAnonymousGirl #St.MartinsPress
Ooh! So addictive! You will not be able to put this one down!
Moral choices. No definitive right or wrong, a grey area that’s never that simple. Choices we make everyday. Choices that effect not only ourselves but everyone around us.
Jessica is a struggling make-up artist in New York City. When a chance opportunity for quick cash falls in her lap she just can’t refuse!
She fibs (just a little bit) to be included in a University psychology study. Simple enough - answer a few questions and receive some quick, easy cash! Can’t be easier than that. But come on, we all know everything in life comes with a price.
Jessica is quickly in over her head and has no idea how to get herself away from the study or the psychiatrist who’s running this study.
This was a gripping read that I basically read in only a few sittings. I developed my own theory on what was going on, only to discover I was completely out in left field!
An entertaining thriller! I would recommend.
A buddy read with Susanne!
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen for an ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
This was an intense psychological thriller! It pulled me right away and kept me engrossed until I completed the story. I love finding a story that is based on a completely original concept in a genre that sometimes feels repetitive. I loved the book and highly recommend it to people who enjoy this genre.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is one creepy psychological thriller. I loved it. It kept me on th edge of my seat. Dr. Shields scared me! She is crazy. The best part is you keep second guessing who to believe. Love books like this.
This is a must read. Creepy. Paranoid. Suspenseful. You name it, this had it. Can;t wait to see what others they come up with if they are all like this!
I was so excited when I was granted this book through NetGalley! I had read their previous collaboration, The Wife Between Us, and loved it. So, to say I was thrilled to read this book is an understatement.
From the first to the last page I was drawn into the story. Truth be told, when I was 90% of the way through this book I took a day break from it because for one, I wanted to reflect and see if I could figure out the ending (which I couldn't ), and two, I just didn't want it to end.
I LOVED IT!
There are so many twists and turns in An Anonymous Girl, that it is the perfect read for anyone that loves mysteries and thrillers. Pre-Order it now. You will not be disappointed!
ANOTHER GREAT BOOK BY SARAH PEKKANEN AND GREER HENDRICKS!
I received a free ARC of An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen from NetGalley. This thriller novel had already been on my TBR list as I read the authors' first novel The Wife Between Us.
If you enjoyed Caroline Kepnes' You, you will undoubtedly enjoy this book as alternating chapters are written in second person. This writing device allows a separation between the character and the reader in a really unique way. The character of Dr Lydia Shields has a lot of control issues. It was exciting to have a female character who was written in 2nd person for a change.
An Anonymous Girl starts out at the gates very early as alternating between Jessica and Dr Shields. The morality tests used as the study by the professor are tests we must often ask ourselves. Jessica had no idea what she was getting into when she got herself into the study by deceptive means. Of course money is a huge motivator for most people who aren't born rich. As I got about a quarter into the novel, the pace really picked up. That's why I consider this book a quick read because all I wanted to do was find out what happened next. The characters were written as 3 dimensional and the plot was different than most of the thrillers and suspense novels I've read lately. This book sets itself out as one of a kind, unique and original stories. Even though I received a free copy, I would certainly buy a copy and reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers and suspense books.
Receiving this ARC for free did not alter my opinion in any way.
First question: Could you tell a lie without feeling guilt? The questionnaire is a morality test. Jess is participating in this study under false pretense, so how will she do on a test that is asking her to be honest, provide her first and instinctive response, and expand on her response thoroughly? She must have done well since Dr. Shields selects her for further testing which will provide her with some financial relief.
Jess is soon discovering that Dr. Lydia Shields is more than what meets the eyes and that this expanded experiment is becoming dangerous. There is much at stake and Jess is feeling trapped. How can she end this experiment without hurting those she loves?
I want to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy of An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. This nail-biting thriller will be available at your favourite bookstore on January 8, 2019.
This is the most twisted book of decet and manipulation that I have ever read! It was absolutely spell-binding and awesome! The reader is captured from the very beginning in the story of Jessica who needs money and Dr. Lydia Shields who will do anything to manipulate young females into her deadly spider web of lies and deceit. The other characters are important but none is more important at than Dr. Shields and the authors do an outstanding job of revealing her motivations little by little. The way her mind words is fascinating and very scary since she uses her brilliance to get Jessica into an impossible trap. What I really wanted to know was if Jessica would be smart enough to extricate herself or would die trying, so I was caught in the web too and just couldn’t stop reading. This is a wild ride that will lead you in one direction only to move off into a totally different direction. Fans of psychological thrillers will not be able to put this book down and even when you finish it, you will be questioning, “What just happened?” And then you will want to read it again, searching for al the clues you missed the first time.
I picked this up from Netgalley because it’s by the same two authors as The Wife Between Us, which I reviewed in October of last year. Like that book, this one is told from two different perspectives – Jessica and the psychologist running the ethics experiment that she stumbles into participating in. From the first chapter, I noticed that the writing style is great – lots of showing vs. telling, rich characters, just solid storytelling. It’s not as predictable as most books in this genre, and while it’s not a five star book, I’d give it a thumbs up as far as being worth reading.
