I absolutely love these authors work. I knew after reading "The Wife Between Us" that this book is a must read. It absolutely did not disappoint. It was very suspenseful and kept you guessing. I cannot wait to read more from these two! 5 stars!
What a suspenseful read! Jess is a character we can all relate too. She sees the opportunity to get some extra cash, and she takes it. Little does she know what’s at stake. Dr. Shields is a character that intrigues us and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Great story!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of An Anonymous Girl (from NetGalley). All thoughts and opinions are my own.
PHENOMENAL!!! One of my favorites by far! After a chapter or two, I had a hunch that I knew where this morality study was heading... I was not always right, but I was hooked to the point that I wanted to keep reading until I finished it. Reading this novel became an interactive experience for me. I found myself actually TALKING OUT LOUD--trying to give advice to Jess! This was an intellectual drama of the best kind, and I think it could easily translate into a very successful motion picture. (One that would grab the attention of everyone--not just lovers of reading. Please give that some thought!)
A BIG thank you to NetGalley and Greer Hendricks an Sarah Pekkanen for the ARC!
Thank You @netgalley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Jessica starts out as just another girl trying to get by in New York City and has found a way to earn a little extra money to help her Mom and Dad and little sister out. Sure answering a few questions "anonymously" on a computer seems like a great idea, but that's where and how it All begins to turn sideways!!!! This book will suck you in, so enjoy it! I look forward to reading a lot more by Greer Hendricks!
I had higher expectations for this book after The Couple Next Door. I loved the beginning and middl, but thought the end was weak. A very average thriller.
What started strong ended flat with a "twist" revealing itself earlier than expected. I enjoyed the dual perspectives of Jessica and Dr. Shields as the tension heightened, and it's worth a read because of that aspect.
However, as aforementioned, the "twist" revealed itself earlier than the author intended, which created some eye-rolling worthy moments.
I still recommend a read.
3.5/5trong ended flat with a "twist" revealing itself earlier than expected.
Suspenseful, captivating, impossible to put down. I loved this book. The characters stayed with me long after I turned the last page. Totally a book I can see myself reading for a second time!
Chilling! Makes me watch my back. You just never know! Was surprised by twists and turns. Their second novel didn't disappoint!!
I loved this book! I had just finished reading The Wife Between Us by the same authors, and enjoyed An Anonymous Girl even more. It was a little creepy in the very best way, and I was hooked from the first page. The main character was very likable, and the story kept me guessing the entire time. I highly recommend this book!
This a very exciting book to read. I thoroughly enjoy it. It's a psychological thriller. It also has threaded throughout the story line concerning morality. What would you do and how far would you go, and could you live with yourself. Whether it concerns money, or lack there of, adult, secrets, hurting other, there are so many thing that we have to take into consideration for chosing the right way. Jessica lies her way into a test study give by a Psychiatrist. The study is about morality. The Doctor had decided to do the case study because her husband had cheated on her. Jessica of course doesn't know this, she believes it was a legitimate study. The tests and questions she has to answer are unbelievable.
Great storyline, amazing characters! Definitely worth reading.
Get ready for an experience like no other. You will feel like you are Jess the character in this story that comes to life. From the start it is a page turner that sucks you in and will keep you reading late into the night. There are many twists and an ending you don't expect. I based my review on the ARC I received.
After reading THE WIFE BETWEEN US, I knew I had to read this book and asap. If you haven't read either book, put them on your list.
Jessica Farris, a makeup artist, is just about making ends meet financially. While at a client's home, she overhears her say that she has an appointment the following day for a survey being conducted by a psychiatrist at NYU, which is paying $500, but the client states she is not showing up. Jessica, in an impulse decision, checks the client's phone for the information to take her place. But what ends up being a generic survey turns into so much.
Jessica ends up being Subject 52 but soon learns that she is the sole focus that the psychiatrist wants for her Morality and Ethics study. What ensues is more than Jess has bargained for. Did she just sell her life and soul for financial gain?
An intricate, complex and profound psychological thriller that will leave you breathless. A chilling white-knuckle read!
Highly recommend!
They've done it again. Hendricks & Pekkanen knocked it out of the park with The Wife Between Us and sometimes I'm hesitant to read more of the same author(s) because I worry subsequent books won't live up to the reputation. THIS ONE DID! It took me a bit to get used to the alternating chapters, but that was mostly because the style of writing and points of view were totally different than the previous chapter. Once it sunk in that I was SUPPOSED to feel differently than the previous chapter, I was entranced and couldn't stop reading this. It'll make you think about all the "anonymous" surveys you take; it'll make you think about your own morality; it'll keep you turning the pages, anxious to see how it all wraps up...or doesn't.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press for an eARC and the opportunity to read and rate this book.
I was very excited to get my hands on the advanced copy of the new book from the authors of "The Wife Between Us". It was twisted and gripping - I didn't want to put it down! A very unique plot regarding a psychiatrist's research study and her main subject, Jess. A page turner for sure.
Thanks to St Martin's Press and Netgalley for this ARC!
Greer and Sarah, you hooked me in the first few pages and had me reeled in thru the entire series of events between Jessica and Dr. Shields. And my feelings for Thomas, Dr. Shields’ estranged husband, go from disgust to pity to hate to compassion as quickly as each page is turned.
Jessica is a struggling makeup artist, hoping to be discovered for that never-ending opportunity of movies and plays. In the interim, Jessica does at-home makeup sessions through a booking company. Her nosiness makes her privy to a golden opportunity to participate in a psychological study conducted by the elusive Dr. Shields. The compensation is unbelievable, so Jessica hangs in there even as each “test” becomes more complicated and dangerous.
Kudos to your in-depth revelations of Dr. Shields’ painstaking notes; her meticulous and analytical thought processes. These descriptive yet troublesome thoughts are what made the entire book a huge page-turner for me. There are so many statements written by this doctor in her notes that I would love to quote here, but shouldn’t (since we’re asked not to quote an ARC), but the scrutiny and method of thought Dr. Shields displays is just downright scary and troublesome.
As good as “The Wife Between Us”, which I absolutely LOVED, I anxiously await your next joint project. And Sarah, I plan to read your most recent novel “The Ever After”.

"An Anonymous Girl " is the second collaboration between Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. Seeking extra money to assist her family, make-up artist Jessica Farris, 28, responds to an ad posting for a psychological study on morality and ethics where she is introduced the study’s conductor and psychiatrist, Dr. Lydia Shields. Because of Jessica’s answers, Dr. Shields invites Jessica to continue with the study and has Jessica engage in a variety of assignments. At first, she agrees willingly, but as the amount of money she is paid increases, Jessica is forced to wrestle with how far she is willing to go and whether her moral compass will hold her back from getting what she wants.
The novel flips back and forth between Jessica and Dr. Shields’s perspectives. I am not sure if one author was solely responsible for each narrative, but the voices of each character are quite distinct. Though the reader gets to spend time in Dr. Shields’s point of view, you only learn additional information about what makes her tick as Jessica does. At the same time, the reader also learns about Jessica’s secrets as she begins to trust and becomes almost obsessed with Dr. Shields.
If you are expecting predictable, this novel is not it. I was kept guessing to the very last page and part of that was because of the brilliant pace and tone created by Hendricks and Pekkanen. I agree with the earlier reviews that you should not pick this novel up unless you have enough time to finish it in one sitting because with the way the authors hook you from the opening page, you will not be able to put this story down.
I'd like to thank NetGalley for providing me an advanced copy for my unbiased review. "An Anonymous Girl " is expected to be published by St. Martin’s Press on January 9, 2019.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Wife Between Us, the previous title by the tag-team of Hendricks and Pekkanen, and was eagerly awaiting their next foray into storytelling. They have a perfect blend of voices together; by shifting points of view between two main characters by chapter, the two women are able to capture the fascinating divergence of perspective that makes life - and thrillers - so engaging... It doesn't hurt that they come up with clever and damaged characters who offer a wealth of opportunities to explore morality, life, and social interactions in such a fascinating and nuanced way.
In this iteration, we're again dabbling in the psychological, taking on two women from wildly different backgrounds with wildly disparate lives - or are we? The tension and secrets and questions that hang in the air from page to page are a huge part of what make these women's books so successful I think. They have a marvelous knack for dangling the perfect blend of facts, fictions, and red herrings in front of their readers, and for keeping things taut and tense throughout the story. Even when you've been told what to expect, you don't *really* expect it. It makes for a very engaging read...
I will admit that I didn't find this book to be quite as surprising as the previous one. That's not at all to say that I didn't enjoy it - I did, quite a bit - but it felt a little less "ta-da!" when things were revealed in this one and I saw a lot more coming this time around. The characters were once again a nice meld of likeable and eminently dislikeable traits. I love that Hedricks and Pekkanen not only present but explore the uglier sides of human nature with such glee - their characters are always just this side of over-the-top in their highs and lows... It keeps them just relatable enough that you feel like you might even know them (or someone like them) even when they're at their worst and most fictionalized. By dancing on that line so deftly, the story can venture into places that might otherwise feel overdone or too unrealistic without ever shifting the tenor of the book out of the possible. It's no small feat that, and one of the things I most enjoy about the women's writing.
Here's hoping there are more books to come!
I received an e-copy of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I dabble in the thriller genre, but I'm not as obsessed as many - especially as thrillers seem to be en vogue lately (thanks, Gillian Flynn!). As far as they go, this one is a bit unique with a new and fresh plot. The first half of this book dragged for me. The author is busy setting up the scene and background, but I was anxious for something to happen already. I did like the alternating narrators, but especially at first, Dr. Shield's voice was jarring and not engaging (of course, it is intended to be that way).
Around the 50-60% mark, things started to pick up to a true thriller pace, and I finished that part quickly. I did enjoy the ending and didn't see it all coming, therefore I ended the book satisfied. If you're a big fan of thrillers I would recommend checking this out. If you're a casual fan, I would stick with another title.
Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review An anonymous Girl for my honest review. Lately I just can’t seem to find a good suspense/mystery book. While this book wasn’t boring, I liked the writing style and it kept my interest. But it never wowed me like I wanted.
First, I’d like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
Jessica Farris is a makeup artist in NYC. Struggling to pay the bills, she learns of an offer to participate in a psychological study for $500. Enticed by the thought of that much money, Jessica decides to sneak into the study, thinking it can’t be that bad. Little does she know how wrong she is.
The study is conducted by the beautiful Dr. Shields, a sophisticated woman Jessica thinks she aspires to be like. But Dr. Shields is conducting this study for her own very selfish reasons, and has drawn Jessica into her sick plot. Soon, Jessica’s career and relationships with her friends and family are at stake, and Jessica must figure a way out.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the alternating views of Jessica and Dr. Shields. I felt like I knew the characters; and that ending? Oh, boy! A definite must read. I look forward to more from these authors.
