Y'all, I pretty much read this in a day. I could not put it down. I ignored life for a full 24-hours and it was great. I regret nothing. If you are looking for an page-turner, this is the one.
It is hard to talk about the plot without sharing too much, but essentially this book is about a girl who signs up to do a scientific study on ethics and ends up being caught up in a whole lot more than she had bargained for. The plot twists and turns throughout and I was constantly trying to wrap my head around it all.
I thought this book did an excellent job with its pacing. It always revealed just enough to answer one of your questions, but kept you turning the page to find out more. The characters in this novel hold several layers and, as the novel goes on, the layers are peeled back. Most of the time it was surprising. I did not know who to trust in this novel.
I was often frustrated with the choices that the characters made, but that is part of the entire plot and what drove it forward. I was frustrated, but not in a way that I wanted to stop reading and not in a way that did not feel realistic. This novel embraces the very human traits of these characters. Which leads into another intriguing aspect of this novel, it is built around the idea of ethics. This topic forced the characters to explore what it meant to be ethical. It still leaves me thinking about their choices now that I have finished the book. In fact, I cannot wait until others read this because this is the kind of book I would love to discuss with others. It would be a perfect book club read.
Overall, this is the best kind of thriller. The one that you cannot put down, leaves you guessing every page, and keeps you thinking about it after you finished.
As a follow up to "The Wife Between Us", this book is just so-so. I raced through that book like I raced through this, but that story was much more compelling. In general, I like stories set in Manhattan and I did enjoy Jessica as a character since she made rational choices most of the time. I also enjoyed that this story wasn't trying to be extra twist-y and was more of a straight up thriller (though I'm not sure that was the authors' goal). Dr. Shields teeters on the edge of being interesting, she just needs a little more depth so she doesn't seem so Lifetime Movie meanie..
It was a serviceable beach read and will make a solid movie, but is otherwise forgettable.
Twisty, turny thrills! Difficult to state anything more than the website description provides without creating a spoiler. Both Jessica and Dr. Shields are very clever and manipulative characters and quite well matched adversaries. While there is another pivotal player, I chose to not reveal this character’s identity. You will just need to read the book to figure it out. Enjoy!
Did not want to put this one down. It's full of twists and turns. I loved The Wife Between Us, so wasn't sure if the next title by these authors would grab me as much, but it did.
The premise of this book really drew me in - who wouldn't want to earn $500 for answering questions anonymously?
The story is told from 2 points of view - Dr. Shields, the very upper class psychologist who, on the outside, just wants to conduct a blind study on ethics and morality. And Jessica - the normal, working girl who is just trying to make ends meet and take care of her disabled sister.
I found the switching back and forth between 2 people a little confusing at times. Sometimes, I just wasn't quite sure who was who at first. The more into the book I got, the clearer it became.
This book was very intense and was a really good, quick read.
The downside, is that it was almost too predictable.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC - it is definitely a great read.
This is a great psychological thriller! I did not want to put it down. It is full of twists and turns, and I couldn't wait to get to the end!.
"When money and morality intersect the results can illuminate intriguing truths about human nature."
-Dr. Lydia Shields
Money is what motivates Jessica (aka Subject 52) to join Dr. Shields' study on morality and ethics. It seemed pretty simple. Answer a few questions, collect a check and walk away.
But what happens when you can't walk away?
A novel of lies, secrets and deception will draw you in from the first page.
After reading The Wife Between Us earlier this year I jumped at the chance to read Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's second novel An Anonymous Girl.
Thank you to St Martins Press and NetGalley for making this e-ARC available to me.
Also
Thank you Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen for continuing to write together. I look forward to reading anything you ladies decide to collaborate on in the future.
The Reasoning Behind My 5 Stars:
* The Setting- I simply love anything set in New York City. I live in a small town. I love the energy and fast pace of NYC. The time of year that this book takes place is perfect. I love the holidays and cool weather that accompany November and December.
* The Characters- All of the characters are well established. They seem real and they are flawed. You'll find yourself rooting for them, hating them and doubting them. I especially found Jessica relatable. She may not have always made the right decisions but she had a huge heart when it came to her family and the people she cared about.
* The Writing Style- This novel is very easy to read and fast paced. I never found myself bored or skimming pages. It kept me up late at night turning pages. It is told in dual perspective. You not only get Jessica's point of view but the doctor's as well.
* The Ending- That's all I'm going to say. I do not believe in spoilers. Please just see this novel through to the end and you will not be disappointed.
I am still thinking about this book and will be for quite a while!
I really enjoyed this book and it kept me guessing until the end. The characters were well thought out and believable. The plot was unique and different than anything else I have read. I also loved that it was written from two POVs. If you like psychological thrillers then you will like this book. The Wife Between Us is immediately going on my TBR list.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press for sending me an e-ARC of An Anonymous Girl through Netgalley.
I was so excited to see An Anonymous Girl, the new release by the authors of The Wife Between Us! This story is centered on Jessica, needing a little extra money, answers an ad to be a test subject in a psych study on morality and ethics. Jessica answers the questions openly and honestly - and before long takes note of her responses and opens up more and more to the director, Dr Shields. But this psychological study is more involved and complex than she thought... The beautiful and mysterious Dr. Shields knows so much about Jessica, but what does she know about the doctor and her study? Is it okay for a victim to seek their own retribution? This is an intelligent, gripping psychological thriller and I loved it! I will recommend it to everyone I know! I received an ARC, but all opinions are my own.
I was super excited to read an advanced reader copy through Netgalley for review purposes. I bought The Wife Between Us for my Book of the Month last December and gave it 4 stars because I enjoyed the twists and the ending was satisfying. An Anonymous Girl was told present day from mid-November to Christmas in two alternating POVs: Jessica, the anonymous girl, and Dr. Shields, a professor conducting an ethics and morality study. Jess has a long time secret that she is literally making regular payments for which leads her to con herself into a study to make some quick cash. Dr. Shields' chapters are her musings directed towards or about Jessica. Since we know from the beginning a morality study is underway Jess' observations and doubts go well with adding a psychological element to the story. The study started off as a questionnaire being told there are no right or wrong answers, she just needs to be completely open and honest. The questions are personal and trigger emotional responses. Jess' candid responses makes her the perfect subject for continuing the study in a real life scenario project which offers a lot more money.
Knowing there is an ethics and morality study adds to the suspense of the project. What is real and what is actually the study, and how is this information being used? A lot of the questions were thought provoking which made me sit down the book and consider my own responses.
Either the foreshadowing was too blatant or I've read too many suspense thrillers lately but there weren't any twists in the book I didn't see coming or already predicting. I would rather watch this as a movie because much of the dialogue would be left unsaid lending more to the mystery I think the book is lacking.
All things considered the book is ok. If you are new to suspense thrillers, sure pick it up. If its a regular genre you frequent, you will be disappointed in how predictable it is.
Seeking women ages 18–32 to participate in a study on ethics and morality. Generous compensation. Anonymity guaranteed.
Jessica Farris is a make-up artist. Not a lucrative job when you are just starting out. But her fate changes the day she goes to make up a girl named Taylor. Taylor has signed up for a study. That pays a lot! When she can't be bothered to show up, Jess takes advantage and slides her way into the study.
Morals and Ethics questions force her to face some of her past behavior and then it's over. Until the psychiatrist running the study decides to offer her a job testing the fidelity of men basically. The money is great but something isn't adding up and she is starting to feel that this could end badly.
This is one of those books that you need to read yourself. It jumped to the top of my list as soon as it landed in my inbox! If you are a fan of The Wife Between Us by these authors you will really enjoy this one.
Never has the phrase Not What I Signed Up For been more appropriate! But this was manipulation at its finest!
Well Done! Netgalley/January 8th 2019 by St. Martin's Press
I could NOT put this book down -- I devoured it. There are so many twists and turns, it kept me on my toes the whole book! Just when you think you have a character figured out, something changes. I NEEDED to find out how it ended. A must read!
This book hooked me in from the beginning. This was a fast paced and compelling suspense book revolving around Jess, who signs up to be part of a psychology study and the psychiatrist running the study. While I was engaged and hooked throughout, I did find a few parts predictable and the main character not entirely likeable. But I will definitely be reading more from these two!
Jessica Farris finds herself entering a psychology study on ethics and morality conducted by Dr. Shields that promises generous compensation as a reward for participation. But, upon advancing beyond the INTENSE questionnaire portion she begins to wonder how far she is willing to go. Is the manipulative nature of her tasks too much? What are the ethical and moral issues Dr. Shields is working to uncover?
When a duo of authors such as Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen combine to create a book like the masterpiece that was The Wife Between Us one can’t help but assume “maybe it was a one hit wonder.” But then, you find yourself engrossed in their upcoming An Anonymous Girl and you can’t help but KNOW you may have stumbled upon a pair of super heroes better than even Batman and Robin. These two are clearly unstoppable as they create another sure hit in this one!

I read the first book by these authors and loved it. Now I’ve had the chance to read this one, and I wasn’t disappointed. An Anonymous Girl keeps you on the edge of your seat and guessing the whole time. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, I was surprised. I can’t wait for more!
A study on ethics and morality that will pay $500 for answering some questions, sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanan have crafted a suspenseful story between Jessica, a struggling makeup artist in NYC, and Dr. Shields, a sophisticated psychiatrist who is running the study.
While I enjoyed this book, it wasn't my favorite book of the summer. I typically love back and forth perspectives but this one left me wanting slightly more. It's definitely worth a read. I'm giving it 4 stars but I'd like to give 3.5.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is a MUST READ!!! I was hooked from page one. This book has everything - great characters, a compelling story, and a fun setting in NYC. Add this to your TBR shelf now - you want to read this one! I devoured it in one day on vacation!
Many thanks to the publisher who gifted an ebook version in exchange for an honest review.
If you’re looking for a suspenseful thriller that will grab ahold of you until the very end, this story is for you! This was an extremely addictive read full of obsession and betrayal. Jess is a makeup artist who needs some extra cash, so she sneaks into a psychological study about morality. Things start to spiral quickly and she’s not sure who she can trust. You feel like you’re right there experiencing it all with her, and every twist and turn makes you want to keep coming back for more. Great story.

Absolutely captivating! This tantalizing story will grab and hook you from the very beginning. The use of different points of view will provide additional insight into the characters.
Jessica Farris is a traveling makeup artist for BeautyBuzz. With the lure of a few hundred bucks, she falsely misrepresents herself in order to participate in a two-day compensated morality and ethics research study being conducted by Dr. Lydia Shields, a psychiatrist and author of THE MORALITY OF MARRIAGE, Can you appreciate the irony here?
As Subject 52, Jessica is bound by a confidentiality agreement. There are no right or wrong answers, and participants are encouraged to be honest and provide complete, first instinctive answers. Her answers are contemporaneously monitored because as she proceeds, instructions appear on the monitor to dig deeper and explain her answers in more detail. A sampling of the questions are as follows: Could you tell a lie without feeling guilt? Describe a time in your life when you cheated. Would you cancel plans with a friend for a better offer? Would you read a spouse's/significant other's text messages? Have you ever deeply hurt someone you care about?
Based upon Jessica's disclosures, uniqueness, and because she is the only other participant besides Subject 5 to directly address the questioner, Dr. Shields decides to continue the study with just her. From here things get very interesting as Dr. Shields uses her to test the fidelity of her husband.
Written by the authors of THE WIFE BETWEEN US, this book will be another best-seller, perhaps even surpassing its predecessor. I highly recommend this read!
I had read The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen and loved it. When I heard that the same authors were releasing another book, I became giddy and knew I had to read it. Luckily, An Anonymous Girl was a good read.
The pacing for An Anonymous Girl started off very fast which is what I like. I read a quarter of the book right before bed, and I only stopped because I had to go to sleep. I would have read more had I not been so tired. However, once I found out what the motive was behind Dr. Shield's study, the pacing slowed down, and I found myself not being drawn to the book as much although it still held my attention.
I started off enjoying the plot very much. I loved reading about Jess' participation in this strange study. However, like I felt about the pacing, once I learned the true motive behind the study, the plot wasn't as interesting. I don't want to elaborate on the plot because I don't want to give the motive behind the study away in my review. I will say the plot for An Anonymous Girl was well executed. It is an idea that's been written about so many times, but the way Hedricks and Pekkanen wrote about it was very original. There is one plot twists involving the study, but I felt like their aren't any more major plot twists. I kept waiting for more to happen, but they never came. I was left a little confused about the ending. I'm not sure if it was meant to be a plot twist or not.
The world building was written so amazingly! Everything about An Anonymous Girl felt real. It was obvious that the authors had done their research when it came to therapy and how a therapist would act. I felt as if I were watching everything unfold right in front of me. I was constantly worried for Jess, and I wanted to be her friend and help her with what she was going through.
I felt like the characters were very well written. I felt they were fleshed out enough to be enjoyable. It was hard to not like Jess and want to help her. She was an amazing character. Dr. Shields was also well written. As I've stated about the plot, it is obvious that Hendricks and Pekkanen had done their research on how a therapist might act by analyzing situations. I thoroughly enjoyed the character of Dr. Shields. I thought Thomas was well written. I kept wondering what Thomas' motives were, and I was constantly left guessing if he was bad or good. Luckily the ending of the book makes it clear.
Trigger warnings include possible suicide/murder, alcohol (the characters drink wine throughout the book), prescription drugs (Vicodin is mentioned), one count of sexual abuse, swearing, cheating, blackmail, and manipulation.
All in all, An Anonymous Girl is a good read. The plot takes an idea that's been done numerous times and changes it so it feels different. The characters are fleshed out, and the world building is amazing. I would definitely recommend An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen to those aged 16 and above.
