Wow could not put this book down. Slowed a bit in the middle but great carefully drawn characters. Thrilling read.
This was a good read. I enjoyed the plot twists and turns. The beginning of the book was a bit slow but it really picked up toward the middle. You didn't know who to believe!
This book grabs you from the get go! I love the POV from Dr. Shields, I hadn't seen this style of writing in many books and it really works here!
An interesting, original premise. I originally got this on netgalley but ended up listening to the audiobook. The use of passive voice for one of character's POV lended to the character's creepiness, but I grew weary of it by the end. Not sure I could have made it through if I had read the ebook instead. The narrators did a good job bringing it to life.
Thanks to the authors, publisher, and netgalley for a copy of the ARC.
I loved the premise of this book: Jessica learns about a research study that pays well and finds a way to participate for the money. Things immediately get interesting when it turns out to be a study about morality. How deep will she have to dig? What will she discover about herself in the process? And who is this mysterious doctor observing her and delving into her psyche? The book alternates between Jessica's point of view, showing her uncertainly about what's going on, and the pain of view of the researcher watching her. I thought it was an interesting choice to allow the reader to be both the observed and the observer, increasing the tension in the plot.
This book was provided as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you are a psychological thriller fan, this book just might be for you. The central story revolves around a psychological study where the focus is morality. The dual perspective of Jess and Dr. Shields provides a unique look into psych studies, motivation, and the role of lies in relationships.
I liked this one. I think the things that worked for me – the consistent pace, the point of view and character changes – helped keep me interested through the slower parts. The main reasons I liked this book were the main character, Jess, and the psychological thriller components. I felt invested in the character, both wanting to see her solve the mystery and come out alive with her family in tact.
I enjoy psychological thrillers, those mysteries that mess with a character’s mind, because they’re like layered puzzles. I enjoy trying to piece together the main mystery along with how the characters are being manipulated and where the truth lies. This story delivered in those areas. I was interested in both Jess and Dr. Shields, as well as the secondary characters like Thomas.
omgeeze this book had me going back and forth about who the real bad person was the whole time. I absolutely loved it! I loved the characters, all of them which is rare I know but the authors have a way with words that just make you cave in. I am so glad to have been able to read this book!
I read The Wide Between Us a while back and loved it, so of course I had to pick this one up too. It turned out to be one serious twisted tale of obsession and manipulation.
Jessica is a young woman who is just trying to make it in the world when a situation presented itself for her to make some extra money. She just had to answer some morality questions as part of a study. The study is being conducted by a Dr. Shields. Jessica believes this is simple enough, until the questions become much more invasive and personal and it isn't until she becomes more involved with Dr. Sheilds that things get more disturbing but Jessica just keeps going.
The story is told fro Jessica and Dr. Shields. It is pretty clear early on that Dr. Shields is a master manipulator and Jessica is non the wiser. But she does become a little suspicious but there was no turning back. With such unrealiable characters and the way they story is told, it just sucked me in and I couldn't stop reading. And I was kicking myself for not reading this one earlier.
When I saw that Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen, the authors behind The Wife Between Us, had released a new book, I was anxious to get my hands on it. An Anonymous Girl begins with Jess, a makeup artist struggling to make ends meet in New York City. When a pampered client blithely mentions a psychological study that pays big bucks, Jess finds away to sneak in to the study. It is during this study that she meets Dr. Shields who then offers her the opportunity to extend the study for even greater compensation. Jess is enthusiastic at first, but when things stop adding up she becomes worried. Is she just paranoid or is something really as wrong as it feels?
Just like with The Wife Between Us, I could not put this book down. I didn't have nearly the reading time I would have liked and I was always regretful every time I had to put it away to do something else. Last night I stayed up well past my bed time just to finish and find out what would happen. Jess is kind of a mess with regrets that go back more than a decade, but Dr. Shields seems to want to help. It isn't long before Jess realizes everything isn't as it seems and that's when it gets really interesting.
This book is the perfect summer read- the chapters are short and quick and the plot is fast moving.
I think you'll really like it.
Fast-paced. Twisty. Suspenseful. Page-turner. This story really held my interest. Dr. Shields is a bit “out there” but I supose that’s what made it twisty and suspenseful. Looking forward to reading the authors’ newest book.
Suspense and twists is what this story is full of. Great story line that provides you with a sense of fear thinking such things can actually take place.
I was a psychology major in college and did a lot of research studies, worked in a lab all the things so this book was right up my alley. I can't recommend it enough, I enjoyed how as a reader we were kept in the loop of what we thought was happening while in the background the happenings kept getting more intense as you turn the pages. Such a page turner. I felt so on edge after finishing it was an intense read. Definitely recommend.
3.5 stars!. Fun but dark and twisty read. These two ladies writing together are quickly becoming my favorites, a dynamic that I didn't think would work well, but it does! This one kept you guessing back and forth till the end and still managed to surprise me!
This psychological thriller is about a young woman named Jess who volunteers to be the subject of a psychological study on ethics and morality, and is told in alternating chapters by Jess and by the psychiatrist running the study, and of course before long things take a turn for the weird with lots of secrets and bonkers plot twists. Apparently I am just not in the mainstream when it comes to Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's joint books - I found their first book, "The Wife Between Us," entertaining but also preposterous, and I found this book even more preposterous and somewhat less entertaining. Yes, it was suspenseful and did keep me reading, but there was just nothing remotely believable about anything that happened in the book. 2.5 stars.
I loved the previous book from these authors, The Wife Between Us. So much so that I recommended it to my kids and anyone who asked for recommendations. I’m afraid I wasn’t as big a fan of this one although it did keep me interested. I find it difficult when I can’t understand a characters actions and that was a problem here. A young women needs money so she pretends to be a college student whose makeup she did the previous night in order to participate in a paid clinical study. So far, no problem, but then she keeps making choices that Get progressively worse. I was interested in seeing how it all played out and I did find the ending satisfying. I will be waiting for the aauthors’ next one for sure.
Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is the one book this year you just cannot miss. This is it. This is the one that will stand out from all the other novels you are thinking of reading. If you are one of those people who read only one book this year...this is that book.
"...I need an escape from my thoughts. If I did drugs, now is when I'd be reaching for a joint. But I don't lose control that way. There's another outlet I crave when the pressure gets to be too much.
Noah thinks I'm the kind of girl you cook for and only kiss on the first date. But that's not who I am anymore, ever since that night with Gene French. Maybe because I trusted him so much, now it's hard to be emotionally vulnerable with men. Even if Noah were in town, he's not what I'm looking for right now.
I think instead about the guy who just texted, and how he stared after me when I walked toward the museum. With him, I can just be an anonymous girl..."
Jessica Farris is a make-up artist. But after a stint working with actors she is now working as a make-up artist for people who simply want to look good for any occasion. She works for a company that sends her on house calls to do a professional make up job. On one such job she learns of a study conducted at the local university that is seeking women, ages 18-32 to participate in a study on ethics and morality. It pays well and her identity would be kept confidential. Jessica sees this as a way to make some quick cash and decides to be a part of it.
Question #1: Could you tell a lie without feeling guilt?
The study is conducted by the beautiful and mysterious Dr. Shields and Jess thinks she will just answer a few questions, collect her money and leave. That is until she is called back for a second session. Jessica is hesitant but she cannot turn the extra money down. Her father and mother are caring for her special needs sister and they need all the help they can get. Jessica's make-up job only goes so far and the extra cash is needed. Jessica agrees to continue the ethics and morality study with Dr. Shields.
Question #2: Have you ever deeply hurt someone you care about?
The questions become more and more personal and soon Jessica is telling Dr. Shields secrets about herself she has never shared. But as she begins to dig deeper into Shields and the study, Jessica is beginning to think there is more going on than what she has been told. What is this study really about and why is she now the only participant. It grows even darker when she learns that there had been another study and another participant like her. A participant who is now dead.
"...Thomas is a cheater and a liar; a strange combination for someone married to a woman who is obsessed with morality.
He says he wants out of the marriage. Who's to say he won't sacrifice me to do it?
I know three things happened last spring: April served as Subject 5 in Dr. Shields's study. April slept with Thomas. April died.
What I need to do now is find out which one of them, Dr. Shields or Thomas, first drew April into their warped triangle.
Because I'm not entirely convinced her death was a suicide..."
This book is one of those that in finishing it, you will sit there, somewhat dumbstruck and wonder just what the hell just happened. It is not so much the twists and turns that come around but just how twisted those turns are. An Anonymous Girl is one of those intricate layered puzzles that when it unfolds seems so obvious, the clues really are all there but the reader finds themselves hopeless in the midst of them.
The team of Hendricks and Pekkanen have written a book that other books pretend to be.
Yes, it really is that damn good. Pick it up and enjoy.
This was a great thriller with a twist. I definitely recommend reading this one.
You can see what is happening but you are not prepared for how it ends.
These writers bring it again! Fantastic novel! This is a gripping, well paced novel that is also well written, of the moment, and a fun twisty read.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fast paced and kept me engaged. Lots of twists and turns before it's over. I'd think I had it figured out, but in the end I didn't.
Thank you so much for the review copy of this book. I think my own educational background in clinical mental health was just too much to accompany the story line. I was intrigued in the beginning but ultimately I just couldn't buy in. My own clinical experiences with patients just made me too squirmy despite the positive reviews from other readers! I did really enjoy the first book by these authors and would definitely read another in the future.
