I would have loved this as a kid. This is a great way to learn more about greek mythology. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
Mortals and Immortals of Greek Mythology is a nice addition to the world of Greek Myths for kids. It is an impossible task to make these stories family friendly without having changes or euphemisms or glaring omissions and Rachmuhl does better than most at making the stories flow smoothly and stay engaging! At first I was uncertain about the art style but it really grew on me--it felt entirely modern and kid-friendly while still visually drawing on Greek art, especially drawings on vessels. A good choice for an older elementary or middle school reader who wants to know more about Greek myths!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC! This is great for young readers who are fans of Percy Jackson and want to know more mythology.
I was so excited to read this because of the illustrations and the fact that it's about Greek mythology. But then the book left out Hades as a main story and got a lot of mythological details wrong. I'm so disappointed. At least the artwork was nice.
The Good Things:
-- The illustrations were brilliant - vivid and beautiful!
The Bad Things:
-- The portrayal of the gods wasn't accurate; I understand it's a children's book but you can't make the darker aspects of the myths flowery
-- Repetitive writing - kids are not dumb, stop treating them like they are!
-- Glorification of the gods and no nuance for the goddesses
I didnt get to download this book but managed to read it somewhere else and its so good for children and telling her the gods and goddesses of Greece. The Gods and Goddesses always intrigued me as well as all of the beautiful names.
Greek mythology is one of my favorite topics since I was a kid and I couldn't skip this one when I saw it. As a Greek myself, I am very sensitive when it comes to Greek mythology and by that I mean strict.
First the good news. I loved the illustrations! So vivid and fresh! I also liked the variety of characters. However, (and that brings me to the bad news), I wasn't satisfied with how all of them were portrayed (some of them weren't even portrayed at all...). I understand that it targets a younger audience and there is a lot of sex and blood in the original stories to include, but I expected some of the darker aspects. That's the beauty of myths.
I was very interested to see how these myths might be drawn and rewritten for the intended audience... I enjoyed the pictures a lot and thought the drawings were detailed and also furthered the story. In fact the beautiful illustration was the main reason I wanted to review this book.
The stories were "cleaned up" from the original, which made for accessiblity for the younger audience. I like that kids would enjoy this (and I did too) but there's a part of me that keeps thinking 'that wasn't the whole story'.
And where is Hades? My two young nephews recently saw and enjoyed the Disney Hercules movie (another retelling!) And Hades was a big favorite so I was hoping to find him in this book.

I must say the artwork is simply gorgeous. About the story, even though I didn't love it I thought really interesting and great for kids who want to know more about Greek mythology.
Thank you Netgalley for providing the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked this one!
I learnt so many things about greek mythology that I should have learnt at school(but sadly my teacher wasn't interested in teaching all about greek history). Sooo, this was interesting!!!
I finally understood the references, I only knew about Medusa, Zeus and Aphrodite and a few others. I would probably buy it, the illustrations were awesome and I took some notes about the book.
My ten year old is very interested in history and is starting to enjoy mythology so we were excited to go through this together. A lot of good basic information and illustrations, good for kids to read on their own without adult guidance.
I was happy to review this after receiving an ebook from Netgalley but think this would be even better to experience in hard copy.
5 stars
I always enjoy Greek mythology and this book provides both stories I am familiar with and lesser known myths. Illustrations are beautiful. Would highly recommend this to anyone interested in a collection that covers both known and lesser known tales.
Thank you NetGalley and publishers, Diamond Book Distributors with Lion Forge, for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I received this ARC on I greatly enjoyed reading a version of famous Greek Gods and persons aimed at younger audiences. The art was really interesting and gave off a fun feel when exploring certain scenes for the stories contained within the collection. The biographies of each Greek character was pretty inclusive and cute. I felt read this to my 9 year old nephew and he understood and grasped the stories easily. I'm hoping the author does a collection with monsters from Greek myths or even monsters from around the world in this art style and writing. It is a neat refresher on the basics of Greek mythological characters, and I recommend it for people of all ages.
I got about halfway through this book before it was archived and I can no longer access it, I was really enjoying it, so I will find a copy and continue reading!
This is a beautiful take on Greek myths. The book brings us through multiple Greek tales and is accompanied by beautiful illustrations on every page. I was unfortunately expecting more of a retelling, than just restated mythology. But if it had been my first time reading the great tales of the Greek heroes and gods, I’m sure I would have really enjoyed it. As it is though, there wasn’t any new information, which made it drag a little bit. On the other had this book had gorgeous illustrations on every page, which I really did enjoy.
I received an ARC of this from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book! I've read so many versions of Greek myths and I thought there was nothing new to learn but lo and behold...every story taught me something that I didn't know before. The description of the Gods and Goddesses and the other major players flowed very smoothly. This was such an easy and enjoyable read. Not to mention, the illustrations were fantastic. I think I chuckled almost every time I turned the page. Some of the jokes were subtle but they were there.
I'd highly recommend this one for people that are fans of the Greek myths and legends.
I thought this book was fascinating! It had so much good information, and I loved all of the pictures. This is an awesome introduction for children/younger readers to mythology.
I received an #arc of this novel from #netgalley in exchange for a fair review.
This is a beautiful story book for children that is most like meant to be a beginner’s guide to Greek mythology. The artwork illustrations are beautiful and the narrative is engaging. I believe this is a book meant to entice the reader to keep reading more about the Greek gods and learning more about them.
This is a fantastic book to give to a middle-schooler, interested in Greek mythology. It is easy, accessible reading with beautiful illustrations. Great job!
This book was an excellent introduction to the vast world of Greek mythology and folklore. It was nice to see that with all of the information given about each god and goddess there was also a small story to help flesh out the personalities and background of each.
This book is by no means a comprehensive look at Greek mythology, but it is extremely eye-catching, and the passages are written in such a way that it’s difficult to drag yourself away from such a rich collection. The art in the book was gorgeous, and it really helped to give an image to something otherwise difficult to imagine, such as angry goddesses and mythical heroes and beasts.
