You invited him into your life. And now you can never go back…
Pippa can tell truth from lies. And she’d know if she were in danger. Wouldn’t she?
This was a very fast paced read for me, it had the right amount of mystery and suspense that I crave in a book! The two different understandings between the two main characters made for an interesting read. I often found myself nervous for Pippa and wondering who she really is. An all around excellent book!
#TheProposal #NetGalley
The first line of the The Proposal made me want to read more. Pippa meets Ryan and makes a proposal to pay him for his life story. The buildup. The sense of doom. All the makings of a good thriller. Thank you Netgalley for this read.
The first thing you should know, dear reader, is that I am dead.
And so The Proposal begins. The book is set out in a series of blog posts and diary entries written by author, and lead character, Pippa Gates. After an encounter with a door-to-door salesman who sells her his life story for £200. Intrigued yet?
Lynes keeps you on your toes throughout the book, leading you in different directions away from your assumptions. Just over half way through, the twist comes and, boy, is it a good’un! From there, the story descends into organised chaos (in a good way!) until the dark and foreshadowed ending.
This book is a masterpiece in suspense. As a murder/thriller junkie, I didn’t see the twist coming. I was delighted when my assumed twist was completely wrong! It shocked me, made me scroll back to an earlier chapter to find the clues, and then smile like an idiot when I realised I’d been played. Honestly, such a good twist!
The writing style is fantastic. There’s a clear difference between the diary entries and the blog posts. There’s a narrative being played out here. The overly happy, perfect life portrayed in the blog posts is beautifully contrasted by the dark, twisted reality portrayed in the diary
The Proposal....excellent book by an author I hadn’t read before but definitely will read again. A fast paced read that did not disappoint.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. Gripping form. Get go and a fab thriller. Couldn't put it down and glad I was able to read it first will recommend
This book lost me about half way through, what started out as an intriguing premise, albeit unbelievable, turned into a somewhat predictable non-page turner. I wanted more of a twist, or something less expected. Had to give up reading, and did not finish.
AMAZING!!!
First read by s e lynes and what a fantastic start! Hooked and couldn’t put down at all! I felt a little slow to start but Stuck to it and so so glad I did! Everything made sense at the end, I found myself arggghhhhh’ing a few times. Brilliant brilliant brilliant!
I have loved this authors other books but am sorry to say this one just didn’t so it for me. I found it quite boring and very confusing. Disappointed but will still read more by her in the future and hope this was just a one off
Unfortunately, this book couldn’t draw me in, it wasn’t for me I think I have been reading too many psychological thrillers lately. Also, I had little time to read and had to put the book down often. It may have been a better read without the interruptions and delays. I would recommend this to people who are really into psychological thrillers with twists. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read the book!
"The first thing you should know, dear reader, is that I am dead…..."
Bam! That's the opening line of the book and I'm hooked immediately.
What you need to know is that this isn't a pretty story. The main characters I can only describe as raw, unfiltered, selfish and manipulative.
How they meet and what transpires after their first encounter is nothing less than a game of cat and mouse...only which one is which?
This is where the author shines. The relationship that ensues kept me off balance the entire read, waiting for the next shoe to drop. What is innocent versus intentional? Who is innocent versus victim?
I highly recommend this off-kilter thriller, and can't wait to see what this author comes up with next!

Oh my word what an amazing book! SE Lynes continues to thrill, excite and astonish me with her novels, I cannot believe she is able to come up with such thrilling and twisted, or rather, seriously warped, plots! 😬
Pippa is a thrill seeker, but will Ryan prove too much to handle even for her? Why on earth does Pippa invite into her house a door-to-door salesman, a confessed criminal, she has just met? 🤔 Is Pippa insane, has she never ever seen a horror movie?
Although Pippa makes questionable decisions, the writing is utterly believable. The style of novel, divided into Pippa’s journal, blog extracts and Ryan’s audio recordings work really well together to make the book compelling and I was unable to put it down.
All in all an excellent well deserved 5🌟. Cannot recommend highly enough - a must read.
Thanks to NetGalley for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really wanted to like The Proposal. It received rave reviews and as a result, I was left wondering what I was missing. Like most thrillers, the twist finally happened in the last third of the novel. But by then, I was dragging through the chapters. It was predicable and uninspiring.
Firstly I would like to thank Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this read in exchange for a honest review.
This book follows teacher Pippa who wants a second chance. Recently divorced and unhappy at work, she uproots her life and moves to the countryside, determined to make a fresh start. But Pippa soon realizes: your troubles are never far behind. When Pippa meets blue-eyed Ryan Marks, he is funny and charming. He is haunted by his past - but insists he is a changed man. He might just be the answer to all her problems. But Pippa can tell the truth from lies. She'd know if she were in danger. Wouldn't she?
Right from the very first sentence I was hooked! This is definitely a read that you won't be able to stop reading once you've started! While I did suspect what was gonna happen from the get-go, the whole book was still very enjoyable and thrilling!
With the story being told from the perspective of Pippa, and occasionally Ryan, S.E Lynes definitely delivered a read that sent chills down my spine, while also forcing me to guess and question everything that was happening.
The only reason that this book got 4 stars instead of 5 is because I honestly couldn't make up my mind on how I feel about the main character, Pippa. While I feel scared for her hoped for a happy ending; I also found myself shaking my head at the book a awful lot and wanting to scream, WHY?!?! You don't let a random guy into your house that jokes about being a murderer?!? You don't then give him lifts in your car even though you're incredibly creeped out by him?!? I spent most of the book wondering what the hell was wrong with her??
While I definitely wouldn't of even acknowledged Ryan if I was Pippa! He is terrifyingly creepy and I honestly just would of not answered the door!, I really enjoyed this read and would definitely recommend! Can't wait to read more from this author!
Unfortunately, this one just wasn't for me. I picked it up and put it down multiple times before finally forcing myself to stay with it ,and it bored me to tears. The story picked up a bit halfway through but it just wasn't enough.
This was an intriguing read by S.E. Lynes. I have to admit that I was drawn in immediately and wanted to know how it was all going to end for Pippa for sure. I thought the writing was unique in that it was depicted as Journal Entries and Blog Posts done by Pippa herself.
Pippa is teacher that had recently divorced and decided to up and move to the country. How bad can it be right? Pippa is trying to make a go at it being a romance author, but her ratings and reviews are showing that she is not doing too good. When she has to have an idea and first chapter of her new novel to her producer by midnight, she is lost as to what she is going to do even though she tells her producer she is almost done with it. As Pippa goes through people she knows in her head, no one is fitting the role she is wanting to create. Then there is a knock on the door!
When Pippa opens the door, Ryan Marks is standing there selling cleaning products. Pippa's gut is telling her that she should not even engage in a conversation with this guy because most of them are ex-cons that do this type of door to door selling. Pippa ignores all her gut feelings and talk to Ryan. When Ryan goes away, Pippa has a great idea to invite him in and get his story for her new character. Ryan is at the neighbors house and Pippa gets him to come back over. From the very beginning Ryan gave me a strange feeling the way that he sort of just made himself at home in Pippa's house.
Pippa now ends up with a stalker. In some strange way I feel that she sort of likes it though. My attention was caught by the way that S.E. Lynes wrote this story, but then towards the end when it gets even creepier, I had to hang on because this story just took a turn off the psycho exit. If you feel yourself getting into a lull towards the middle, keep going. It will be worth it for sure!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture as well as the author for providing me a copy of this one to read. All opinions are my own.
Had high expectations for this one ... it sounded really interesting when I requested it. What a let down. I try really hard to find something positive in everything I read and review, unfortunately, this book just didn't make the cut. I've had it for months and I kept picking it up and putting it down. I didn't connect with any of the characters. I also didn't like the writing style. I couldn't even finish it. This one just wasn't for me.
Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture for the eARC.
Pippa is an unhappy divorcee who works as a teacher by day and dreams of being a full time romance novel writer. Receiving an ultimatum from her editor and suffering from writer's block Pippa offers an excon Ryan money to share his story. But her inspiration becomes her nightmare as now Ryan is obsessed with her and Pippa has a full fledged stalker at hand
The Proposal is fast moving psychological thriller that sucked me in with the first sentence . Narrated via Pippa‘s journal entries and blog posts it’s an intriguing story that has me guessing till the end
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
Psychological thrillers can be rather predictable these days, so I'm always thrilled when I read one that makes me think, "Well...that was new!" And The Proposal certainly fell into that category. It starts out slowly and reasonably enough, as writer Pippa Gates, on the eve of a book proposal deadline for which she has no ideas, invites an oily door-to-door salesman into her home and offers to pay him for his life story, which she will use as inspiration for her book. And from there, it slowly and progressively gets TRULY BONKERS. I can't say much more about the plot without spoiling anything, but I was riveted. Truth be told, by the end it was so uncomfortably crazy that I almost took a star off, but the very last bit brought it together in a way that made some semblance of sense to me, and, well, it really was a wild ride. Would definitely recommend if you want to dive into something different and somewhat insane, but don't fixate on any expectations of how it will will turn out.

Pippa is a teacher and an author. She is looking to turn her life around. She wants a second chance. She is recently divorced and quite unhappy in her life. Then she meets Ryan a charming young man whom she considers the answer to all her current problems. Neither of the characters is very likable and you don't find yourself rooting for them.
The format of story and blog posts was quite jarring and difficult to follow.
I really struggled to get into this book unfortunately, and I’m still in two minds about it.
The main character seems a little too trusting and ends up in an extremely difficult situation. As I was reading I formed certain opinions of her which the author then well and truly kicked out the park at the very end.
The series of events which follow Pippa’s initial bad decision escalate pretty quickly and I found myself disbelieving the scale of it a lot of the time.
The story was written well, just not my kind of story I’m afraid.
