I remember watching Bob Ross on public television in amazement with how a blank canvas could become a stunning painting in the space of 30 minutes. There was no magic to it. It was just a matter of seeing the possibilities and following the instructions. Over the years, although I have become busy with raising children, going to work and the myriad other things that take over a person’s time, one thing remains clear to me. Creating art is one of the best therapies that can be found, and this book can help you create some beautiful artwork. The instructions are simple, plain, and clear. The illustrations alongside the instructions are the same. Step by step, you will use simple motions and see them resulting in skies, waves, trees, mountains, etc. to produce breathtaking scenery. Interspersed throughout the book are some of the comments Bob would make on his show. So, it is like hearing his voice encouraging you and giving pointers. Whether you are a budding artist or looking to enhance your skills, you will enjoy using this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book that was provided by the publisher through Net Galley. However, the thoughts presented here are my own.
I have loved Bob Ross’ paintings and calming personality for years, so was excited to review this book. Apart from step by step instructions on how to paint several of Bob’s paintings, scattered throughout the book are some of the positive sayings he used in his tv show. I don’t know if there is a book of these available but if not there should be. The painting themselves are very typical Bob Ross, and if you are a fan of this style you will enjoy learning how to produce these yourself. This book could be used in conjunction with the appropriate episode of The Joy of Painting so that you can have everything you need ready beforehand, and to follow along and make sure you don’t miss anything. I have always wanted to try painting, and now can’t wait to get some Titanium White on a brush and give it a go.
I grew up watching The Joy of Painting. Bob Ross made oil painting look so magical. His encouraging words have stuck with me. He's the reason that I started painting (though not just oil painting) as an adult. I'd highly recommend his videos, though I'll mention his system requires that you buy his brand of paint and tools if you want to follow his methods exactly.
Painting with Bob Ross shows how to paint 16 of Bob Ross' paintings. The book started by describing the basic techniques of how to load the brush and such and then how to paint a basic tree, mountain, etc. This section was clearly explained, though it's even easier to follow if you can watch Bob Ross do it on a video. The 16 paintings are signed Bob Ross paintings, which suggested to me that there might be videos showing Ross painting them. Yup, there are PBS videos showing Bob Ross painting these scenes. You can watch every step fully explained and demonstrated in real time on the video. Happiness!
So is the book still useful? It tended to have steps like, "Use these colors to make a dark green and follow the tree technique to create a line of trees at the base of the mountain." The accompanying illustration showed what the end result should approximately look like. Basically, if you're familiar with Bob Ross' method, this book should be fairly easy to follow and will help you produce a wide variety of landscapes. If you're a complete beginner or have no idea who Bob Ross is, you might be better off watching the videos.
Bob Ross made some of the most beautiful and colorful paintings. His wet on wet technique has been used by many to create lovely artwork. I've used it myself several times and it was very helpful learning this style of painting.
This book explains all the tools and techniques that he uses including many colorful photos. If you want to paint lovely paintings like Bob then you need this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Quarto Publishing Group- Walter Foster Publishing through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Who doesn't know Bob Ross and his landscape paintings? I was fascinated by his technique and the resulting paintings.
With this book you can learn his technique step by step and recreate some of the landscape paintings and, of course, learn how to make your own.
I loved how the paintings are broken down into each part that builds the big picture. Bob Ross is such an amazing artist. I watch reruns of his painting shows to help with my anxiety. He is so calming.
Painting with Bob Ross Learn to paint in oil step by step! by Bob Ross Inc is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. I have watched Bob Ross videos all my life and have many of his books. I watched his videos just because he was fascinating and calming to watch! Because I did watch so much, I can read between the lines in this book. This has 16 projects in step by step picture/info steps but because these projects are so advanced, I think a total beginner would not be able to do manage without watching his videos prior to reading this book. Having an idea of what he does would help. Anyone that has watched his videos and has some art behind them, this would be great! A beginner that has watched Bob would probably do alright too.
In the book, he gives the tools and what paints you will need for each project. Lovely art, different places and landscapes. Miss him so much..:(
Having watched MANY a Bob Ross video on you tube I wondered if a book would have quite the same charm. I shouldn't have been concerned.
Each project is broken down into clearly pictured and described sections, each explaining why this step is done and what tools to use.
I have always loved Bob Ross books. This one is for the oil painters out there. I never got to watch his television show but he has a lot of DVDs so you can follow along. Oil painting isn’t as difficult as it use to be, with the cleaners and other bad smelling chemicals. He has created specialty’s oil paints. With this book you can follow along step by step to creat beautiful landscapes in oil. Although I find it a very difficult medium to work with, but if you love Bob Ross’s paintings this is a great book.
I should preface this by saying I own no oils (or acrylics) which are the paints that will work best for Bob Ross tutorials. My art skills are stuck at perma newbie and I usually use pencils, pens, and watercolors and I tend to stick to not very realistic faces, flowers, and cats. Not the widest range but I enjoy it. I also want to improve, so Bob Ross landscapes? Yes, please.
I will say that this book is definitely 5 stars BUT with a caveat: if, like me, you haven't worked in oils I would highly recommend watching some of his videos (there's an official Bob Ross channel on YouTube) so that you get a feel for the different techniques used before you rely on the book alone, I understood intellectually most of the techniques in this book, but watching them in action helps me anyway.
If you've ever seen a "The Joys of Painting" episode, this book stays true to the show. Some of his better known sayings are here (Happy Little accidents, anyone?). The techniques are the same. It's just in book form. As I said, I do feel that watching some videos is important to truly understand how he paints. That said, I also feel like sometimes when you're working on anything artsy or craftsy, you don't really want to have a video that you have to keep pausing, rewinding, etc. That's where this books comes in. Once you know what you're doing, you can paint anywhere you want but still have a Bob Ross tutorial with you.
Even if you don't want to work in oils or have no interest in landscapes, I'd still recommend this book and/or his videos. It's very useful for understanding the layout of such things. I feel like that knowledge can be translated to other mediums, even if they work best for oils.
Thanks to Bob Ross, Quattro publishing and NetGalley for this pre publication copy. This is a nice book with some great ideas to try out. The style is not to my taste, the colours are a bit vivid for me. However, I could easily follow these instructions and paint a good picture.
Reading this wonderful book Painting with Bob Ross bought great memories came back with me and my mum watching Bob Ross when I was a teenager (blimey that was over 30 years ago!) on our old Television, and nagging her and my grandad to buy me art products, so Birthday and Christmas presents were easy for them to get me. Bob inspired me to pick up a paint brush and start to learn to paint etc. By watching these over and over, I created those lovely pictures. He made so easy to do. However, mine never looked like his but they were unique and painted by me.
Painting with Bob Ross book is crammed with so much information throughout this book. You will find 16 painting projects, each with a complete list of tools and materials needed. It has step-by-step illustrations on how to create some graceful mountains, ocean waves crashing onto rocks, a winter cabin, a lakeside path, a deep forest river, these illustrations are just Brilliant.
This is a joyful book and if you love Bob Ross you will love his new book written by Bob Ross Inc. You never get bored with his paintings and how he explains how to create them.
Well Done for a brilliant and colourful book. Plus highly recommended by Me.

Painting with Bob Ross: Learn to paint in oil step by step! by Bob Ross Inc. is everything you’re hoping it is. If you’re anything like me, you grew up with a love and admiration for the man behind the happy little clouds, Mr. Bob Ross.
This book starts with The Bob Ross story then dives into the best tools and materials to use at home. I really enjoy that this book cover some basic painting techniques before the book dives instructions on how to create some of Bob’s most notable works. The layout and design of this book make it feel like an art piece of its own.
I can not wait to buy this book and add it to my library! It will go right next to my Bob Ross Funko Pop.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster,
Walter Foster Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
My husband and stepdaughter used to watch Bob Ross all the time on PBS, so I was excited to discover “Painting with Bob Ross: Learn to paint in oil step by step!”
In 1982, The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross made its debut on public television. The unrehearsed, unedited show soon became a favorite among aspiring artists and painters. Almost 40 years and 403 episodes after his on-air debut, and decades after his untimely passing, Ross still has enormous popularity.
This joyful guide teaches artists the basics of painting landscapes with Ross’ specially formulated oil paints. Features his signature “happy accidents” approach that makes challenging subjects less formidable and more fun for artists at all levels. Also includes never-before-published art instruction and text by the beloved artist himself. Highly recommended!
