Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for letting me read Taking A Shot by Taryn Leigh Taylor for an honest review. All opinions are my own!
My first time reading that author.
3.5 stars because it was good but not great. Nothing new.
A good girl wants to go wild for one night... She wants a one-night stand... Throw in a hot hockey star... and it gets hot and steamy and what was supposed to be for one night only isn't...

This book has both cussing (including f-bombs) and open-door sex. If those things will make you leave a bad review, this isn't the book for you. But you're going to be missing on one heck of a book. Although this is a part of a larger series, you do not have to have read the other books to enjoy this one.
This is one of my favorite books of 2018 so far!
Taryn Leigh Taylor is quickly becoming a one-click author for me because her books just never disappoint. I don't enjoy hockey in real life, but holy cow do I love her hockey books and heroes! I read a lot (and I mean a LOT) of romance novels, and Ms. Taylor's books stand out to me as always being funny, realistic, and heartfelt; they never feel cheesy or forced like some books in the genre can be. And whoa baby can she write some sexy, sexy love scenes. Sex in books is a take-or-leave thing for me these days because all of the scenes are pretty much the same thing, so I find myself skimming over them, but not so with her books - even Ms. Taylor's kissing scenes make my pulse pound, she's that good at writing them. Another thing she does well is sprinkle humor – both the laugh out loud and the subtle kind – throughout her books. I highlighted at least 25 parts that I wanted to go back and re-visit once I'd finished and even on a third go-through while trying to write this review, they still crack me up.
Chelsea is my favorite kind of romance heroine. She is a total hot mess at times as she tries to figure herself out in her personal life, but she's also completely capable and competent when it comes to her job. I know that sounds like it shouldn't make sense, that it shouldn't work, but it does and it makes her realistic, relatable, and so incredibly likable that you can't help but root for her. I just adored her from the moment we heard about her checklist. Watching her trying to be brave and different was both fun and awkward because I identified with her so much and I found myself just rooting for her to get it all right. Thankfully, Brett Sillinger is a heck of a fabulous book hero and he sees and likes Chelsea for who she is, not who she is trying (and sort of failing) to be. I also love that, even though they have crazy hot sex, they also build a relationship – a solid friendship – along the way. They don't go from sexy to love, and I so appreciate that.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is new to Ms. Taylor's writing because this showcases her writing talents beautifully. I would also recommend this to anyone who likes a spunky heroine, a hero in need of redemption, and/or an unlikely pairing that you can't help but love from the very start.
A great start to what I hope will be a upcoming series. Brett has been traded to a hockey team in Montana. He's not thrilled but he's happy his career isn't over, thanks to really bad press and a really crazy ex wife. This is his first move away from the only team he ever played for, he lives and breathes hockey. He knows he needs to keep his nose clean and focus. No crazy business. No women. He thinks he's safe in the hotel bar, having a drink. Chelsea is out to have a good time, angry at being passed over for a job she worked hard for, tired of being the girl who's always reliable and out to prove to herself that she can pick up a man and have a one nighter. No names, no anything. She picks a hotel bar. Being dropped off by her best friend who is truly annoying as hell, she's determined. There's a business convention at the bar, but it's full of middle aged men, she can't even get a drink. She spots an opening at the bar right there next to... the broad shoulders of a man who grabs her a seat. All he sees is the red lace of her bra peeking out of her sweater. No names, he calls her Red. No names only go upstairs to his room and enjoy the night together. Chelsea leaves before he wakes up, leaving her bra under the pillow. Her decision making process on that one is a hoot. He wakes up alone, knowing he has to be at a team meeting, practice, then a fund raising gala that night he's not really happy she skipped out. But she did. His first day is a little rough, between the coach, the new teammates, some he's known from the past, last thing he wants to do is go the the fund raiser but he does and there is all her red glory is Chelsea, the team owners daughter. She's the event coordinator. The one who is practical, organized and keeps things moving. So why did her father give her brother the lead to the franchise. The brother is a spoiled little weasel with a snarky attitude toward Chelsea.
And there to help her pull things off is that annoying bestie. Seriously, take her out and I would have liked this book ten times better. It's a great story, the growing relationship between Chelsea and Brett. I liked the two of them a lot and also the teammates. Nicely written and great flow. I love a good hockey story. Brett and Chelsea are flying under the radar. What happens if they get caught?
Or will they? Will one of them back out? Lots of questions in this one. Lastly, Brett is a stand up man. Big thumbs up on that one.

4.5-5 Stars!! Great book right here! I loved these main characters! I really need to look into reading more Taryn Leigh Taylor books! This is the first time I’ve had the pleasure of reading her books! I definitely recommend reading this one! I just wish there was an epilogue. I’m dying to know what happens with Chelsea & Brett!!
*I received this book at no charge from the publisher.*
This is my first book by the author and I'm now excited to go back and read her other books. Both characters were vulnerable, funny, and absolutely likable. The pace of the story was perfect and I liked how it all came together in the end.
Brett was not my favorite in his sister’s book, but I loved him in this book with Chelsea. Sexy, romantic, and fun. Cannot wait for more books from this author!
Taking a Shot is the first book I’ve read by this author but apparently, reading more information about the series, I’ve found Brett was one of the most requested characters fans asked to get his own book. And I can definitely see why. Brett and Chelsea have undeniable chemistry that you can almost feel popping off the page. As a first read, it caught my attention and held it for the entire read.
Brett Sillinger is a hockey player that is on the back end of a very illustrious career. After a few bad choices, including a disastrous marriage, he is starting over at a franchise in Montanta. After landing in his new “hometown” he makes his way to the hotel bar to relax and unwind thinking he’d find himself alone. Too bad a marketing convention had just let out and the men hightailed it to the hotel bar. He was starting to use that “cursed” word again when a gorgeous woman bumped into him spilling his drink. Well, this could change things.
Chelsea London was tired of being the good girl. Tired of having lists and clipboards and doing or saying the right thing all the time. After her ex broke up with her for being to “boring” she finds herself on a mission. A one night stand kinda mission. It goes against everything she feels right down deep in her soul but she needs to try something wild for once. She picks the perfect spot, a hotel bar with lonely men attending a marketing conference and away she goes. Too bad these men are totally not doing anything for her libido. She wants fire, she wants spark, instant attraction that happens once in a lifetime. Bump And there he is.
Brett and Chelsea, though seemingly opposite on paper, find themselves in all too familiar surroundings and expectations. They both fight the attraction they have for one another tooth and nail but realize in the end, they are who they both want and need in their life. Fairytales and clipboards, who knew they made they best combinations.
4.5 star read for Taking a Shot (Montana Wolfpack series) from this reader. I received a copy without expectation for review that I enjoyed very much. I will be adding this author to my go to list of authors for the future. Any and all opinions expressed above are my own.
Hockey star Brett Sillinger's never been afraid of a little trouble. But when his personal life ends up in the tabloids, he knows his career is on thin ice. Luckily, a new team decides to take a chance on him.Hockey star Brett Sillinger's never been afraid of a little trouble. Chelsea London is looking to misbehave. What's being good ever gotten her, besides getting dumped and passed over for a big promotion at work? But her one delicious night of rebellion has unexpected consequences--her hot one-night stand is the latest addition to her father's hockey team. When I started reading I couldn't put it down.Taryn is magnifysent writer.I cannot wait to read more of there books.Keep up the great work. You should definitely read this book. Can't wait for the next book.
A hockey romance between a new player on the team, and the team owners daughter. Chelsea is looking for a one night stand. She is tired of being the good girl. On a night out, she meets Brett. They don't change names, or info. Just one night. That is until the next day when they run into each other at a work function.
I enjoyed this story. Hockey romance done right!
4.25 “Sounds like my kind of fairy tale.” Stars
I kid you not my iPad was at risk over overheating here as Taryn Leigh Taylor combines light and easy romance with hot and steamy sexy-times between a couple whose chemistry blazes bright from the moment they set eyes on one another.
“Better hold on tight, Red. I’m about to blow the house down.”
What starts out as a good-girl-bad-boy one night tryst involving no names is soon tipped on it’s head when Chelsea London, the Montana Wolfpack’s events director realises the man who showed her the very best of times is the teams newest signing, Brett Silllinger. He needs to keep his head down and his focus on the game, she wants to rebel a little having being recently dumped and neither can stay away from the other.
“I’m just your typical cursed prince, doomed to wander the earth alone until I locate the pair of boobs that fit this magic bra I found after the best missionary sex of my life.”
There’s no getting away from the fact that this did come with an air of predictability, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that Taking a Shot delivers a little bit of everything and I devoured it. Taryn Leigh Taylor is a new-to-me-author and having discovered this is a spin-off from her HarlequinBetween the Books series, I’ve already been on a one-click spree, ready to dive in for more sexy hockey player action and I’m hoping we’re treated for more from the Montana Wolfpack in the future—there’s definitely a wealth of possibility.
“I promise to give you multiple happy endings first.”
4 - "Sometimes you have to follow your heart..." Stars!
Taking a Shot is the first book I have read by Taryn Leigh Taylor, I love a good romance based around sports men and/or women, and the Montana Wolfpack ice hockey team offers up plenty of potential for future books (here’s hoping).
One night with a handsome stranger…
No Names.
No commitments.
No regrets…
Bad Boy of Ice Hockey Brett Sillinger has been traded to the Wolfpack and the message is clear upon his arrival, in that any erroneous drama, screw-ups or tabloid scandals will potentially mean the end of his career.
He wasn’t in Montana to get laid… He needed to keep his head in the game…
So finding out the woman he had a no-strings ONS with on his first night in town is the team owner’s daughter, does not get him off to the stay-under-the-radar start he was hoping for.
"Being good all the time has gotten me nowhere."
Especially as the chemistry between them is off the charts, and they for some reason keep ending up in compromising positions, which often end up with them being naked with each other…
"It’s too late to change what happened, and now I don’t want to stay away…"
I really enjoyed this one, the only minor whinge I have about it is the fact it reminded me of so many other books I have read based on the same themes. Because of that there’s not much about the story-line that wasn’t easy to predict, but I really liked both of the characters, and the author keeps you interested and engaged in their story because of that, and the fact the plot was quick paced and everything moved along steadily. The drama was low-key levels, which is something else that I appreciate, but it was relevant but not overplayed when it did happen.
He’d spent so much time moving, he’d never realized the value of stillness before…
I am hoping that the publisher and the author have more ideas for the Wolfpack in the works, the basis for the Team has been well set with this one, as well as plenty of secondary single characters that could be paired off in future books.
I received a copy of Taking a Shot by Taryn Leigh Taylor from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I am a hockey fan so the summary initially intrigued me and overcame any apprehension jumping into what appeared to be an on-going series (rather than starting with the first book). Happily, it was easy enough to fall into the story (seems that it's only the second in this world) and pick up the characters and their relationships to one another.
I thought this novel was a fun read overall. Generally fast paced, likeable characters, some steamy scenes, and an interesting plot twist at the end. It was just an enjoyable way to pass a rainy summer day!
I would definitely be interested in reading the first novel by Taryn Leigh Taylor and would recommend this book without reservation.
This was a short and enjoyable book about a relationship between a newly traded hockey player who needs to prove himself to his team and the owner's daughter that does not skimp on the steam. It has a lot of familiar plot lines from the evil ex to the pressures of family roles but the story takes some new approaches to them. One I particularly loved involved the response to one of the the ploys made by the evil ex. I really love hockey romances and had never read any of the author's previous books so I am happy to have discovered someone with a backlist that I am eager to check out.

It is my first time reading anything by this author. This is a very sweet story. The bad boy and the good girl always makes for a good time. I found myself sighing from some of the absolutely sweet moments these two shared. Like the time in the alcove. ❤️ I recommend this to anyone who wants a cute love story.
3.5*
I'm a massive fan of Taylor's previous hockey books written for Harlequin Blaze so when that Harlequin category closed I didn't think I would get to enjoy any more in the series but thankfully we now get to enjoy Brett's story in a spinoff series.
Hope there are more books to come about the Montana Wolfpacks!
Fun, happy read. I love how they start off as strangers but then surprise! That part probably does require a bit of suspended disbelief, but whatever, I don’t care because I enjoyed myself throughly. :)
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled for the ARC!
Wow, just WOW. this book will have you hooked from page one. And let me tell you it did. It was paced out perfectly never did i feel rushed while reading this book. I finished this book in 2hrs, it was that good. Love love love.
This was a seriously HOT story. It features Brett, a hockey bad boy and Chelsea, a very good girl. They meet at a bar when C wants a one night stand after lsoing a big promotion at work to her bad biy brother. B is a new hockey player on her dads team and that is a big stumbling block between the two.
This story was very HOT and also very fun. I really love bad boys and good girl romances and this was a very fun and sweet one with lotsa hot scenes.
I have to say that this book really surprised me. I chose it because of the cover and because it was a hockey romance and that is my favorite kind of romance to read. The author did a really great job writing this book and getting the message out that it is not okay to cyber bully people in anyway. This book was about Chelsea and Brett. Both of them were a little broken inside because of things that happened in their pasts and also because of things that people said and did to them. Chelsea was a really great person. She was sweet and she really only wanted someone to love her but she didn't realize that is what she was really looking for. Brett was this hot hockey player that many people judge because of past mistakes he made. He was given a second chance in his hockey career and he was determined not to blow it this time. When Chelsea and Brett meant it was in a bar where Chelsea was looking for a guy to have a one night stand with. Fate took her to Brett. Chelsea got her one night stand and she left in the middle of the night without even exchanging names or phone numbers. The next night she ran into Brett and again and things really heated up. This book was just amazing from start to finish. It was a story about 2 people that were looking for something in life and ended up finding something that they really were not looking for and really didn't know they had. It is about these 2 people finding a peace of mind they didn't know was possible but fighting against it. It is about so many other things. So much miscommunication and misunderstandings that it leaves you reading and reading until you realize the book has ended and then you are just sad because there is no more to read. I really really hope that Taryn Leigh Taylor writes more books about the guys on this hockey team because I was left with the feeling of wanting more and that means it was an amazing book. Thanks NetGalley.I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange for an honest review.
In some ways this is like most sports romance novels that have the coaches/owners daughter falling in love with a player. Brett was truly a nice man, so that helped make, Taking a Shot, a little different.
