I couldn't stand one of the characters because they annoyed me since I don't like their personality. I thought the world was a bit confusing, and I wasn't sure what was going on. I found the book a bit slow for me to read. I wish there are more to story for me to enjoy, and it didn't live up to my expectations.

This was an interesting and different take on the myth of Jack Frost. The snow globe concept is different than anything I have read before. How scary would it be to not be sure what season it would be the next time you woke up! Genesis is a smart character who starts to question some of the odd things that are going on around her and figures out about Morozoko’s involvement.

As much as we learned in this story, there are still so many questions left. I hope we get a sequel to see what happens with the Globe going forward and the people inside. I would also like to learn more about the real world and how the Globe is going to help.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes distopians and retellings.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

I could not finish this book. The writing was not to my taste at all and I just couldn't force myself through it.

Hey book slayers!

Jana here with yet another review. This time, I was sent an ARC through NetGalley by Xpresso Book Tours of KM Robinson‘s The Revolution of Jack Frost in exchange for an honest review. The book is set to release of near the beginning of November.

My Rating: 2 / 5

First let me say – I don’t really think I was in the mind-set for this style of book at the exact moment, and it very well could have affected my review. I found this book very hard to get in to, and after the wild adventure I went on in the last book I read, I felt this to be slow and drawn out, it actually took quite a bit of will not to DNF it. I do plan to purchase the book when it is released, and re-read and re-review when I am in a better mindset, but I have a funny feeling it may fall flat again.

I don’t know what it was, but between the cheesy romance, the strange concept, the less than convincing character development, and the expectation from when I read the title and saw the cover, to when I read the actual book, I just wasn’t thrilled. I was expecting a lot more out of this and it fell really flat for me. The concept is interesting; living in a snow globe, the weather being controlled by a big brother sort of character, pushing them to survive, to be stronger. But the execution didn’t draw me in, which is a shame. The characters didn’t draw me in at all, there wasn’t one character I felt any real attachment or feeling for. I didn’t really care what happened to any of them, and that is a first for me in a book.

I can’t say I would rush out and recommend this to my family or friends, but, I will eventually make a purchase, if not only for the sake of having this stunning cover on my shelves.

Until next review; may your coffee be strong, and your books be magical!

Happy reading!

Jana

I didnt enjoyed this book. I didnt even finish it. I DNF it after about 70 pages. It was predictable and slow for me. Im not trying to knock the book but, it needed something more.

I ended up DNF-ing this about 50 pages in. It wasn’t a horrible book by any means, I just wasn’t in the mood for this type of story.

Maybe I’ll revisit it in the future.

You know those books that are so generic that it's clear the author just wanted to have a book written but didn't care what it was about as long as it sold? Well, this is the opposite. It's an author who really wanted to tell a story but had no idea how to actually write a book.

Obligatory Summary

Genesis and her band of faceless masses all live in a world with unpredictable weather, left there by some unseen entity to fight for their survival.

Our world runs in cycles that change like a person shaking one of the snow globes we found in the storage room in the bunker when we were kids. Two days of Spring, a week of Summer, four days of Fall, followed by a month of Winter. Most days, I wouldn't mind if our world fell off whatever shelf it is sitting on, smashing the cycle.

She and her boyfriend, Jack, as well as some of her close friends all know that things are changing--Winter is getting longer, Summer shorter, and things are even more unpredictable than ever. But what if they have a spy, secretly relaying information back to whatever force put them there? And what if it's someone Genesis loves?

The Writing and Worldbuilding

Sounds kinda cool, right?

Wrong.

The book is so nonsensical that most of that was taken from the book's description. It isn't that it's a terrible story--it's far too simple to be truly bad--but it is poorly executed, with dismal pacing and utterly dreadful syntax. The verb tense constantly changed, the sentences were run-ons and awkward. Dialogue was...okay, but only for a few characters. Time passing was imperceptible (apparently the book takes place over a few days but it felt like a month at least) and the number of people in the bunker was apparently over 200 but it felt like there was 20 people max. And the retroactive exposition. Like suddenly introducing things 90 pages in that were supposed to be present since the very beginning.

"It crashes into the wall making Jack jump as high as the water in the river over the rocks in the waterfall in Spring right after the snow melts."

There is a certain beauty to how bad it is.

The world itself made absolutely no sense. How on earth was anything able to survive with enough seasons in a year to equal 8 years? Plants don't just grow overnight. Animals require gestation (which takes time) to have offspring. There's a reason why ecosystems are a thing and why they're fragile. It is literally impossible for the entire premise of this book to exist.

It really just felt like I was reading a first draft that had never been presented to an editor or beta-readers. It had potential to not be terrible, but unfortunately, it was terrible.

"He comes to me, quickly and slowly all at once."

The Characters

Honestly, Genesis is super bland. Like, extremely bland. And she is obsessed with Jack in the weirdest way. Like, thinking that his constant evasiveness is "adorable".

Jack is a creep with a lot of issues but I did appreciate the small degree of depth he brought.

Nathaniel, though, is apparently Jack's best friend even though he's consistently death glaring him, and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he had murdered Jack.

Azra was really the only character I genuinely liked! She should have been the main character. She actually has a personality.

Eustace was introduced more than halfway through as if I already knew who he was and then wasn't really ever explained.

Conclusion

Just read Maze Runner. It isn't good but at least it's coherent.

Yeahnah, I must confess my self disappointed in this book :(

I was ready for a fantasy Jack Frost story retelling, but turns out it's kinda more like a Maze Runner ripoff?? In the dystopian genre??

BUT WHY DOES THE TITLE SOUND SO FANTASY IF IT'S NOT?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!

Also, there is a Jack in this story, but I feel like the Frost bit is kinda hmmmmmmmmmm

The romance was sweet... and so sO SO cringyyyyyyyyyyy
But I mean... At lease there was no love triangle ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And the main character was BLANDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!! Was not a fan... Also, the name Genesis threw me off. Not sure why, just felt really weird...

Plot was predictable...

BUT I did finish the book, so I guess some small part of me enjoyed it. I have about 10 Netgalley titles atm, and haven't been able to finish any, so finishing this was a big deal!

I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE THIS, Jack Frost is SO underdone, but it just didn't work for me D:

I tried reading this book but found the writing style just wasn't something I could enjoy and the overall plot was rather confusing. It is a shame as I was really looking forward to it.

So I had one main problem throughout the beginning of the book was the seasons; two days of Spring, a week of Summer, four days of Fall and a month of Winter. It literally makes no sense, even when you find out that they're basically in a snow globe where the weather is being controlled. Does it mean their years are only 2 months long? Or do they have multiple of each season in each normal year? IT MAKES NO SENSE!

Throughout the whole book the main character, Genesis gets on my nerves so much so that I almost stopped reading the book on more than one occasion. Yes girl, we get your boyfriend is super hot and you love him, but I'm so done with teenage girls being written this way in books. Actual real life girls need characters to look up to who are badass, not brainless girls swooning over guys 24/7. Secondly, even when she finds out that he has been lying to her practically her whole life, she only takes like three days to forgive him???

I have many questions that weren't answered in this book but my brain can only pull two out right now;
- What has gone on outside the globe? I mean okay this one is pretty obvious in a sense because we know there's war and blah blah blah, but what has actually happened outside to lead to this place happening?
- Why is everyone so blase when they find out Jack has been lying and going behind their backs controlling the weather all these years? If I had just found out something like that I'd go full physco  on him.

It's safe to say I don't think I would recommend this to anyone, however if there was a sequel I would need to read it just to see if I got answers.

I wish I had have enjoyed this as the premise sounded amazing.

Alas the narrative was lacklustre and moved extremely slowly, at points I skipped whole chapters and still managed to be on top of the story.

I found myself failing to connect with any character involved. I also found that main love interest between Genesis and Jack felt very Stockholm Syndrome-esque for the majority of the novel.

While the novel had great potential, I felt it completely missed the mark

3.5 Stars

So this was an ok read for me. The plot was interesting but I didn’t really connect with the characters.

The plot was really well executed to me with some good plot twists and this was a really well-written novel. The main character is called Genesis. this is a world where the seasons last for a set amount of days. However the weather then starts to become unpredictable and they discover a tablet. Genesis then discovers that her boyfriend Jack is the one controlling the weather and they are inside a globe as an experiment as the outside world has become too dangerous. Therefore Jack has been lying to everyone including his girlfriend Genesis. When the weather machine breaks Jack , Genesis and the other characters travel to a mountain where Jack gets trapped and it is assumed he died trying to turn the weather machine off. However in the epilogue it is revealed that Jack is alive. There were a lot of characters in this book- sometimes I was confused about who was who. I really liked Genesis as a character however I would loved to have known more about her backstory like why her parents put her in the experiment. Personally I didn’t like Jack – I didn’t like that he lied to Genesis and everyone.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing a arc for review.

“He was a force of nature. He could warm your soul like the sun and then bury you in ice the next second.”

First off I love Jack Frost stories and there are far too few of them in the world. This was delightful, albeit confusing origin story for Jack Frost. I’m not going to lie I was massively confused for far too much of the story. There are a lot of characters, but most of them don’t really matter. I hadn’t read any synopsis of the story so the whole snow globe thing was really confusing, as was the ridiculous weather patterns.

Jack and Genesis live in a “snow globe” in a bunker with a whole, whole lot of other people. They get their seasons in weeks, or days, not months. The weather can abruptly change from summer like conditions to a full on blizzard by the afternoon. The adults of the bunker do the best they can given the conditions. Children appear out of nowhere and they are brought into bunker life with the rest. They have no technology, or running water. They really have no sense that technology exists. Not a single person can recall life outside of the bunker.....or do they?

That’s all I can say plot wise without spoilers so let’s move on. I really started to get intrigued as to where this was going about half way through the book. The characters weren’t the most fleshed out or complex, except for Jack and Gen. I honestly think that what really caught my attention with this book was just the unique set up for an origin story. Jack tries to protect all these people to the best of his abilities. Things get wonky, and the part where things fall apart could have been explained a touch better. I enjoyed the last half though. Characters seem to become a bit more real, the conflict was tense and it was the perfect ending for a Jack Frost origin. 3.5/5

This book was highly entertaining, mainly because the main character was--unfortunately--quite a joke. I was very much looking forward to this wintery book. However, I was disappointed by the writing. The premise of the book is more-or-less government control of the winter in a snow globe (obviously its supposed to be cold and snowy in a snow globe). One also can't take the concept of living in an actual snow globe too seriously. If the weather gets too warm, won't the water boil? How do they breathe in there? You know, the science of the whole thing. This is a MAJOR fantasy world. Its a FUN concept. But MAJOR fantasy. So if you're excited about this one, stay WAY open-minded and you just might enjoy it.

Rating 3.5/5

A "Maze Runner" with seasons, this dystopian novel. took on a very interesting aspect for the plot which unfortunately fell through but was still pleasing and the characters were delightful. I think the story could have done without the romance as Jack was the focal point and not "Jack and Gen". In fact, if the romance was taken out completely I would have rated it higher. The plot definitely had its flaws and could have expanded on a lot more if the author chose to do a duology or even series of this. But I liked the twist on a Maze Runner concept, but I feel if you're going to copy another storyline, you need to work hard at making it really your own so the readers will be able to enjoy an entirely new world. It was there but wasn't done in a way that would have made more sense for us. I still really enjoyed this and recommend it.

I struggled a lot with this book because the writing was good but there wasn't a story. It took me a little bit to figure out what was going on, which is fine, but it would have been faster if Gen and Jack weren't all over each other every other paragraph. I love Jack Frost, and this book had potential, but the characters were just flat.

A futuristic, dystopian retelling of Jack Frost with more than a hint of the Maze Runner, this was a difficult one to pin down. The idea behind the book was good, but it took far too long for it to be revealed to the reader, meaning the first half of the book made little sense, and didn't really engage me. I didn't mind at all the idea of an enclosed world where the weather was controlled as an experiment but I felt it should have been made clearer much earlier in the book. I also struggled to care about the characters , and never really bought the romance between the two main characters, Genesis and Jack , it seemed to be a matter of convenience, both in terms of the limited options available to the characters, and in terms of giving the author something to write about when nothing else was happening.
I struggled more with the writing style and execution than with the central premise , and I found the second half of the book much more interesting. That , combined with the clever epilogue, might be enough to entice me to read the next book.
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.

There was quite awhile between me requesting this book and actually reading it. Which meant I had no idea what the book was about when I actually started reading it.

The story started of really vague, there were a lot of characters and really weird circumstances (which maybe would have been less weird if I had read the back..). Nevertheless these weird circumstances really intrigued me, and I really wanted to know what was going to happen!

I slowly started to understand the world around chapter 5.

In this world there is a company which  is testing the weather on human in small ‘snow globes’, to find the strongest race. This concept is really interesting, and that’s also the main reason for me requesting this book!

I do think the idea could have been executed better. The book was a bit too short for the story that was being told. If it would have been longer, more of the world could have been explored, since it was really interesting. Also in the book the figure things out unrealistically quick, I think with more pages this could have been done better as well. Since than the characters would have more time the figure things out, and it would feel more realistic! Also at the end we see about the world outside of their ‘snow globe’ but I’m really sad that they did not really explain what was going on. I mean you know something bad is happening, that’s why they have these ‘snow globes’, but they never say what.. And now I really want to know.

Another big complaint is that the main character was making really stupid decision. Too stupid to feel ‘real’.

I ended up giving this book 2.5 stars, because I think the idea of the book was really original, and that the story was going in the correct direction. But I think the author should have expanded a little bit more.

This is the story of how Jack became known as Jack Frost.Imagine a world where there are 2 days of Spring,a week of Summer,4 days of Fall and a month of Winter continuously. That is what life is like inside the globe ,only the people there(mainly younger folks) don’t know they are living in a controlled environment and are being tested on how one copes with such harsh continuous conditions and preparedness for the changing seasons facing frostbite, starvation and survival during the cold bitter winter. Then things start happening which cause even the controlled conditions to change. The main characters of this story are Jack and Genesis and they are very much in love but Jack has secrets that Genesis has yet to discover. A very engaging read that kept me flipping the pages.

I couldn't connect with the characters, the storyline was hard to follow, and the writing was horrible. It was not what I was expecting from the synopsis.
Needless to say, I abandoned the story after trying for 45 pages to get into it and failing.
