This book is utterly hilarious with heavy sprinkles of sarcasm. At times, I have to smh thinking it’s fake, but unbelievably there’s such a president who ppl voluntarily voted for. Only in America.
Unfortunately the once estimable G.B. Trudeau has come down with a case of T.D.S. (Trump Derangement Syndrome). In his collection of comic strips #Sad! Doonesbury in the Time of Trump, he covers the months leading up to Trump's election and the first year or so of his presidency. Like virtually every American comedian, Trudeau has given up humor in favor of bashing Trump.
Occasionally some of the strips poke fun at things like the PC culture, and Trudeau's characters go on with their lives. So if you're a fan of Doonesbury, this collection might be just the thing for you to enjoy. But if you're tired of the "Trump is stupid and evil" narrative being passed off as humor, don't waste your time with this book. Let Trudeau write himself into obscurity.

Fans of G. B. Trudeau's Doonesbury will find some comedic relief in these hard times in #SAD! DOONESBURY IN THE TIME OF TRUMP. This compilation of political cartoons will, if nothing else, remind people that we are not alone in our waking up every day still a bit shell shocked and more than a little traumatized by the state of our country at the moment.
To be honest, I had already started wording the beginning of the review for this book before even opening it to the first page (which is, of course, silly, stupid, predjudiced,....)
I wanted to comment on how sad it was, that so much merchandise appears about the current POTUS, because a lot of the stuff out there, be it books, caps, shirts, ... and in support or potesting against, most of it feels like people wanting to make a quick buck out of the misery.
AND THEN I READ THE PREFACE. And I must say, to some extend, the author has a valid point. "Satire... to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.... Satire rarely changes minds... doesn´t mean [we] should forgo the comfort of laughter":
Maybe we do need all this, to numb the pain....
That being said, the cartoons in this collection are witty and clever, and (despite the subject) a fun read.
Garry Trudeau is one of my favorite satirists. His Doonesbury comics have been politically on point for decades, and now he takes on the Trump presidency with good humor and sarcasm. I loved the pages wherein Trump is quoted in his non-grammatical splendor. Trudeau is able to evoke the doubletalk and non sequitors so espoused by the Donald. He makes this book sing with tongue in cheek tweets by Roland, a familiar character. If you are as chagrined as I am by the ultimate non presidential president, you will love this newest offering from Garry Trudeau.
What can I say? It’s Doonseybury on Trump. I enjoyed it. I’d recommend it to friend and family. Thank you for the opportunity to read it
I liked it......typical Doonesbury commentary on the current sad state of political affairs! I like Doonesbury! Typical good Doonesbury cartoon drawings. There were several pages that I chuckled out loud!
I received this e-ARC from NetGalley, in exchange for my own fair & honest opinion/review.
I,ve been a Doonesbury fan for a long tme and I know there’s no such thing as bad Trudeau strip.
This book is brilliant as usual, and it makes you laugh and think at the same time.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC
Trudeau's amassed a biting selection of his strips showcasing the sheer buffoonery and embarrassment of Trump and his administration along with the rippling effects rained down upon our culture; for example, our attitudes toward the sea of contradictions, the attempted gaslighting, and the abandonment of common sense. There are many more, obviously.
The satirical collection calls it like it is, and you'll laugh, but there may very well be a sigh of acknowledgement (or a single tear of recognition) following it. At just over a hundred pages, it's a jewel of a read and, while familiarity with the characters going in helps amplify the humor, I don't think it's necessary for complete enjoyment.
The art's as snappy as it ever was, the presentation and structure of the book makes it a good page-turner. I imagine any fan of the series will really dig on this.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the advance read.
LOL!!!! I loved this book. Very nice comic book about Trump. I am sure some will not be happy with it, but I for one, will be gifting this book for Christmas gifts. LOL....Little Donny.....priceless.Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book. Although I received the book in this manner, it did not affect my opinion of this book nor my review
I enjoyed the subject, as I have the same political leaning as the artist. However, think you should consider a design that makes it clear that each page is an independent cartoon and they are not related. maybe the pdf format was tripping me up and the hardcopy would be more intuitive.
Hilarious!!!
Didn’t always “get” some of the character references because it’s been some years since I have read Doonesbury regularly. But this hit the spot... helped relieve some of the severe angst I have with the current president, #SAD.
A Brilliant book about a super smart man. He is the greatest man. Out of the great men I know, I have to say he is the best. He has the greatest ideas in the world. And they're all in this book.
#SAD!
Unlike the Mad Magazine series of "funny" strips about Trump, that I could not read a year later, these strips, unfortunately are still talking about the big problem the US is facing with the current president.
This is a collection of Trudeau's strips, he is only doing Sunday ones these days, from the lead up to the election, to Spring of 2018. The strips are funny, but not outrageously funny. It is hard to make fun of this man in the white house, because each time you think you have come up with an outrageous thing to make fun of, he does another thing.
The two strips below, though funny, are only funny because they are actually what it feels like is going on now.

If you love Doonesberry, and have been following it since Nixon, as I have, this would be a good book to add to your collection.
But if you are tried of all things Trump, I would stere away from this, as it will only remind you how crazy things are, still.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
Entertaining political satire with graphics.
Some of the ilustrations about Trump were really subtle and I dont think I fully appreciated those but on the whole this is an entertaining graphic novel and well developed political satire.
Some of the comics portray Trump quite clearly but others provide a commentary about the Trump administration through the lives of ordinary people. This is the first Doonesbury comic that I have read and it has left me wanting to read more.
If you enjoy political satire then you will find this intriguing.

As a non-American some of the scripts/characters went over my head. When the man himself appears the satire is at its best. Some of the pages were a bit flat and lacked the tangy controversy of Doonesbury's earlier works. Still its a reflection of life in the USA of today - unfortunately only the fans will read this book.
Funny....Sad!!
I remember reading Doonesbury in the 70's. Vietnam, campus unrest, changing sexual mores, the counter culture, grass, the silent majority, Nixon. The strips were pointed and controversial. Debate raged over whether the strips should appear in the comics section or on editorial pages. Sometimes strips were censored or storylines were dropped from the papers, (depending on the papers' ideological bents), because they were too pointed or disrespectful. My how times have changed.
Now the president and the political process are beyond parody. These strips are funny, insightful, and arresting, but there are only so many ways you can point out the obvious. Trudeau is still wise and calm, and his characters are still thoughtful and surprising, but it's all in the service of things we already know. In the 70's Trudeau spoke truth to power, and the truth would set us free. Today, Trudeau speaks truth to power, and power doesn't seem to notice or care.
I get that. Parody and satire, no matter how edgy or apt, can only go so far. Even Trudeau addresses that in his rather wistful preface. So, take comfort. Appreciate the skill and style and near perfect timing and structure of these strips.
That said, and to be fair, Trudeau tiptoes around the harder truths. We get Trump's narcissism and childishness and general obtuse incompetence and all of that. But there is nothing about racist dog whistles or about the callous manipulation of immigration or black athletes or gun control or evangelicals in order to firm up the political base. The subtitle of this book is "Doonesbury in the Time of Trump", and that title may be more telling than might have been intended. At bottom, this is more about Doonesbury than about Trump, and maybe more about us.

This wasn’t humorous or even particularly well drawn. Just a long rambling, most slanderous, tirade against Trump. Totally falls flat. Unreadable.
To be published on the release date.
We all know that Donald Trump is throwback to the days of Mussolini, Hitler, and Stalin. We all know he is an outspoken misogynist, proud racist, enthusiastic supporter of murderous butcher Vladimir Putin – and an idiot to boot.
Well-known American cartoonist G. B. Trudeau has covered Trump for years. As he writes in this book: Trump is severely sensitive to ridicule. Anything anti-Trump isn’t going to change the minds of his cultists, but it is a surefire way to get to him when nothing else ever will.
Unfortunately, the review copy I had of #SAD! was nearly inaccessible (I got mostly scrambled pages with a bit of text), but Trudeau’s work can be widely found, and is worth seeking out.
