Lisa Jewell’s Watching You was an engaging read. It was an interesting mystery. A quick, easy read; I loved the short chapters. A perfect selection to read during these extraordinary times of COVID.
I'm a fan of other books by Lisa Jewell but not this one. It's very slow paced. All the characters are a bit dull and one dimensional. I found myself not caring what the big twist would be towards the end of who the murderer was. DNF at around 50%
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for this reader's copy. In exchange, I am providing an honest review.
"Oh what a web we weave when we practice to decieve." This phrase comes to mind as I finish this title. And for the first time I have thought about it in slightly different ways. For example, sometimes we practice to decieve to protect someone else - not just ourselves. A web is still erected that people will get caught in.
The main character in this story is Melville Heights, located in Bristol, England. It's an upscale neighborhood with colorful homes and high-end professionals. Two of the homes are inhabited by the Fitzwilliam's and the Mullen's respectively. They live two doors away from one another and live mostly separate lives. Joey Mullen and her husband are living temperarily with her brother Jack and his wife Rebecca. Tom Fitzwilliam, the local superheadmaster, has caught Joey's eye. He has a magnetisim that she is drawn to. It's unsettling but she can't stop thinking about him and looking for him. Meanwhile, Tom's son Freddie sits in his attic bedroom and practices his spy skills. He takes copious notes on the comings and goings of Melville, he has special interest in a couple of teenage girls and watches them constantly. Down below the Heights, in the village lives Jenna Tripp and her best friend, Bess. Mr. Fitzwilliam is their headmaster and according to Bess, swoon worthy. Jenna isn't so sure.
All of these lives begin to intersect and entwine themselves through the beginning of a new year. There's an air of mystery that accompanies Mr. Fitzwilliam and while Bess and Joey are drawn to him because of it, Jenna is repelled and suspicious. Her mom is also suspicious of him and unabashedly plants herself outside of the Fitzwilliam home to keep an eye on their comings and goings. Everyone has their eye on someone it seems. Something is "off", nothing seems as it is and as time goes on Jenna begins to ask more questions, including Freddie Fitzwilliam who also doesn't just think but knows something is wrong.
I don't like to spoil storylines or hint too much toward outcomes so I can't really say anything more about the premise of the story or even the residents of Melville. It was a great story, very engaging. Using Melville Heights as the main character really worked because it provided so much for the people in the story to use as their covers, their reasons, their motivations. The friendship between Jenna and Bess really reminded me of the one between Missy and Nasreen on Ackley Bridge (a great show if you haven't yet seen it) which is 100% a compliment. Freddie's part of the story was interesting to read and follow, by the end I was cheering for him because Jewell really brought the puzzle pieces of him together. This was a great read that would be perfect for a book club because it ends well but leaves, in my opinion, readers with so many discussion points.
Creepy, creepy, creepy! When you compare being watched or being the watcher, you realize that there is so much more to the story. I loved that there were short chapters! (One of my favorite things about books and makes them speed along as you are reading!) The one negative thought is there are so many characters, that if you spread out your reading of the book, you can get lost and confused. But though lots of characters, they are well developed and keep your interest. And can you figure out who is the killer? See if you can put together the pieces and solve the mystery!
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
This is my third Lisa Jewell book and it is another win. I love how she always keeps me guessing and the I did not see the big reveal at the end coming.
Highly recommend this book.
Sarah Jane Mullen has died. She had two children Jack and Josephine. I like the author and the cover . I was bored by the dialogue and descriptions.
Jewell is a master at the kind of domestic suspense that has you reading "one more chapter" till 2 a.m. In her latest, Jewell combines two of my favorite things: a robust psychological thriller with a campus setting. Riveting.
This review was done on goodreads, I have attached the link https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38355282
This was a bit of a creeper story but if anyone can pull it off, Jewell certainly can..loved all of it and would recommend.
I completely regret not reading this title sooner. This was my second title by Lisa Jewell, and I will be picking up more of her books from now on. I loved the multiple POVs for this story and found the ending to be very satisfying and a bit chilling! I don't have any major issues with the book. I read reviews that stated there were too many characters and it was confusing, but I did not find this to be the case at all because the main POVs we read from are all very different. Overall, I recommend this for a quick read. You won't want to put it down!
Unfortunately, I did not read this title before the ePub expiration. Having read reviews and other works by Jewell it would seem that "Watching You" remains true to Jewell's oeuvre. Readers of domestic suspense and thrillers would likely devour this title. A great recommendation for fans of Greer Hendricks or Ruth Ware.
"Watching You" is a thriller that's a little hard to explain in a brief synopsis. There are a ton of main characters (which Jewell actually pulls off quite successfully) that are all involved in separate plots and mysteries - or so the reader is left to believe. They all end up tieing together in a fast-paced and suspenseful read. I did guess a few of the twists ahead of time but overall, Jewell still wrote an incredibly satisfying book with an ending that addressed all of the red herrings and tied up all loose ends. I haven't read any other books by Jewell yet but I"ll definitely be checking out more of her titles. Any book that can totally keep my interest during quarantine is well worth a recommendation!
I gave up on this one. I just do not like the subject matter enough to finish it. I tried much longer than I usually would because it is an ARC & I wanted to be able to finish & review. But I just can't do it.
Update (Dec 2018) - so I first tried this book in September, as an ARC, and I couldn't finish it. But then it's been recently released, and I've seen so much hype and glowing reviews about the book, I decided to try again. Maybe it picked up after I gave up? Something, I don't know. Although I'm not yet finished, I am nearing the end, and my first impression hasn't changed. It's a terribly slow moving book, with too many characters and I have zero interest at all in the outcome. But in chapter 52, the author did something unforgivable to me, and something I find offensive - she randomly diagnosed a character with Asperger's syndrome, and I can't think of a reason for her to do that other than to add the catch phrase in the book. Now I'm anticipating the ending, and honestly, if it ends the way I now feel that it will.... I'll cross this author off my list forever.
My original rating was 2 stars - "it was ok". Right now, I'm leaning toward changing the rating to a 1 - "did not like it".
Lisa Jewell gives us another story with twists and turns - everything you think you know, changes as you go deeper. All of the characters are watching each other, yet not seeing what they each are hiding. Definitely another good read.
Somehow I'd missed reading this until now. Now that I have a lot of reading time! This novel was a perfect page-turner. Now I'll go look for the rest of her books. Thanks, NetGalley!
The more I read this book, the more I got into it and really liked it. It proves once again that Lisa Jewell is a master at her craft. Do NOT hesitate in picking up one of her thrillers. I love how everything comes together at the end!
Thank you, Netgalley, for this arc.
Although I read this book ages ago, I never submitted a review. I will read anything by Lisa Jewell -- she is one of my favorite authors and this book was amazing. It was a fast-paced read and I have recommended this book to many others. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
After living a carefree island life, Joey has returned to the UK along with her brand new husband. Since money is tight for the newlyweds, they are living with her brother and his wife in their fancy house in a very posh area of town. Although the book focus is primarily from Joey’s perspective, we get some insights into other people living in the area, especially when it comes to the very handsome neighbor (Tom) who has just moved to town, along with his wife and teen-aged son. The fact that Tom is also the headmaster at the nearby school for girls ensures that he is the topic of conversation for most of the females in town (at least for the female members), including Joey. Just like all of Jewell’s books, this one doesn’t disappoint when it comes to twists and surprise endings. Although it’s not my favorite one by her, I still enjoyed it quite a bit.
Special thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The neighborhoods in these books always sound like the small town I grew up in. Everyone knows everyone's business and everyone has their secrets. Most of those secrets are harmless, but there are those that will threaten the quiet that surrounds everyday life.
When someone is murdered in Melville Heights nobody is safe from suspicion. With the police constantly around each neighbor is starting to get scared that their secret will accidently be revealed.
A twisting and turning story that will have you realizing you never really knew who someone was. The masks and secrets that are with each person slowly begin to fall. Revealing their true nature to those that thought they knew them so well.
Normally I love Lisa Jewell. This one just wasn't working for me. But other reviewers liked it so give it a chance. I mean its Lisa Jewell.
Thanks Netgalley for this arc.
