I got a lot out of this sweet little devotional. Each day starts with a snippet from one of Jane Austen's, has some of Rachel Dodge's thoughts on the prayer as well as some scripture that goes along with it, then ends with a prayer you can make personal. I enjoyed getting to know beloved author Austen's serious and spiritual side. I like to read more Bible than people's thoughts during my quiet time, but this is a good little addition to reading scripture.
This book was such a lovely way to gain more insight into Jane Austen's private life, specifically her faith. I loved the way it was set up with a few days meditating on each of the prayers, along with guided devotional reading.
Absolutely adored this book. The perfect read for Jane Austen fans. So sweet and well written. The author did an amazing job of presenting a carefully crafted book with the wise words from a well respected writer in the book community.
Praying with Jane: 31 Days through the Prayers of Jane Austen by Rachel Dodge is a charming book and idea. Devotions surround Austen's life in faith and prayer. You learn a little more about this fascinating writer while also getting Bible verses that go along with this. You will have time for devotion and thought while "Praying with Jane" as you learn more about her. This is done through prayer, excerpts from family letters, biographical information and elements of her novels. The scriptures chosen help give more details about Austen's thought. Any fan of Austen will enjoy this book and different approach to devotionals. If you aren't a fan of Austen then this book might not be for you, but if you'd like to learn more you will. This is so much more than a devotional book and I liked how you learn more with the depth of Austen. It is provoking and informational helping bring more thoughts to devotional time as if a friend is there with you -- a classic writer. It is interesting to learn and study the Bible through the prayers of Jane Austen.
This book is different than what I was expecting. It centers on three preserved prayers of Jane's and reveals a lot of her spiritual history and raising. I'm not sure I like the way this is all presented--expecting a more succinct and to the point devotion for each day - but nevertheless, I learned a lot about Jane and do like that readers are directed toward Jesus. (Love the cover art.)
If you are a fan of classic literature--- and more specifically Jane Austen, this is most certainly the devotional for YOU! In Praying with Jane, Rachel Dodge introduced us to three fantastic prayers written by Jane Austen, each with a section of their own. Each day we look at a few lines from that prayer and really take the time to dive deeper into her words, her life and her faith... and how we can apply these prayers into our lives too.
I must admit, I didn't really know all that much about Jane Austen's life before picking up this devotional. I found that not only did this devotional introduce us to her prayers, but it really did give us a great glimpse at Jane's life too. Those who aren't as familiar with Jane will love learning more about her, and those longtime fans will certainly love this chance to break down her prayers and focus on her faith a bit more.
While I must admit that I have not read through all 31 days at the time of this review, I am really enjoying what I have read so far. This is truly a very unique devotional that I think classic literature fans are certainly going to enjoy!
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.
I don't know much about Jane Austen as a historical figure and I enjoyed reading these prayers that she wrote. I didn't find the devotional format of this book all that compelling; I would prefer to read a collection of Jane's prayers and writings, perhaps with some historical commentary, and then ponder them on my own.
So this is not exactly what I was expecting. I was expecting more of a just simple daily prayer, but this book has much more than that. I learned more about Jane and her time. Good overall. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A lovely devotional for Jane fans, beautifully executed and designed. 5 of 5 Stars.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine. Pub Date 02 Oct 2018.

We live in such a fast paced world that even our spiritual habits can be fast-tracked. With online bible studies and podcasts from our favorite church sermons we can fit in our spiritual needs on the go. Or so it would seem. Are we better off in such a manner?
Jane Austen is more famous now than she would have considered possible. Imagine the quiet society the author lived in and compare it with our lives today. Imagine her sitting at her desk writing in her journal or perhaps outdoors on a blanket reading her bible. I can imagine her carving time in her day for reading her bible, writing her thoughts or discussing her thoughts on a verse with her beloved sister, Cassandra. Many today find it difficult to find time to simply sit and reset their minds on their spiritual needs. I find myself seemingly running out of time when I know I have the same 24 hours every day, just as those who went before me. Our lives today truly are busy, but we simply use our time differently.
Slowing time down can be done but it takes practice. It also takes practice to ignore our phones in order to breathe deep and get into quiet times of reflection. We still have sixty minutes to the hour, that will not change. I find that for myself, reading books like Praying with Jane help me slow down and pause for much needed spiritual boost. Every care in the world still awaits but I am better equipped to manage them. Less stress is one of my goals for the new year so relaxing with Jane came at a very good time for me.
If you like Jane Austen and want to give your spiritual side a boost, pick up a copy Praying With Jane by Rachel Dodge. Rachel also has reading guides and discussions on her website. This book is on my Kindle app so it is easy to access on my phone or tablet. Just right for those times when I am waiting for an appointment or at the bus stop for my grand-kids. It is time well spent rather than watching the clock.
Looking for a special gift book? Whether to gift yourself or another, if you love Jane Austen, Praying With Jane offers that unique gift.
An opportunity to spend thirty one days of prayer and spiritual reflection with the much loved and renowned, Jane Austen. Not the usual contemporary slant of fan fiction or austenesque, we are treated to a look at the interior life of this honoured author. The strength of her spiritual perspectives. The stability of her faith. The sustenance of her prayer life. And, the resonating beauty that results.
The acknowledged qualities of her writing are equally expressed throughout her prayers, deepening our own reflections. Insights into use of the prayer book and Jane Austen's own recorded prayers reflects on the impact of prayer in her own and family life. An excellent reference and guide to the spiritual influences of Jane Austen's life.
Family letters and memoirs, personal anecdotes, recounting of scenes from her novels, all provide a personalized backdrop increasing our appreciation of this woman's faith and spiritual life.
Highly recommended. Whether for yourself or another!
Praying with Jane: 31 Days Through the Prayers of Jane Austen by Rachel Dodge is a beautifully written book which takes the reader through three prayers and includes devotions, Bible quotes, and historical information. If you are looking for a unique devotional, this will fit the bill. Even if you are not a huge fan of Jane Austen (I have read some of her works but not all of them), this will be a welcome addition to your bookshelf.
I love that “this book is designed to help you savor Jane’s prayers, to understand each one more fully, and to delve into the treasure trove of biblical and practical applications found in each line.” What a great way to approach a devotional!
Throughout the entire work, we get a glimpse into the life of Jane Austen, while reading her prayers and reflecting upon our own lives through the devotions. For example, we can learn from her light-hearted and content spirit and find a renewed belief in God’s “Fatherly goodness.”
I would recommend this book to fans of Austen, those needing a devotional, and those interested in Christian books. It would also make a great gift.
(full review will be live on my blog in late November/early December; I will then share on Goodreads and also through my social media for my blog)
If you are a Jane Austen fan, you will love Praying With Jane by Rachel Dodge.
Using Jane's prayers, we get an insightful look into the author's faith and how close her relationship was with the Lord. The author takes us through Jane's prayers line by line and has created a 31-day devotional that will refresh and revive your prayer life.
Along with Jane's prayers, the author has included examples from Jane's books that guide the reader to deeper introspection of not only their walk with God, but they get to see Jane's relationship with her Saviour as well. Each day is followed with a prayer that takes you right to the feet of Jesus to examine your own heart as Jane bares hers.
This is one of the best devotionals I've read in a long time, and if you are a Jane Austen fan, it is definitely one you want to add to your reading list.
This devotional book centers around prayers written by Jane Austen. Each devotion uses examples from what we know about her life, as well as using her books to illustrate various parts of the prayers.
A perfect gift for that Jane Austen fan!
What a one of a kind devotional! Part biography about Jane Austin's life but also including many prayers and a daily devotional breakdown to understand the depth of concept and language Jane Austin prays about! Delightful!
"Praying with Jane" is a devotional book based on Jane Austin's prayers. It is very personal and practical. There is a prayer first . Then the author explains how it is practical and then has a prayer. There are many topics Rachel reviews in this book. She says pride and vanity cause blindness. It is easy to lose sight of God when we are prideful. We need to look at life from God''s perspective. If we do not our pride can blind us to our weaknesses. Another example is Jane asked for the Lord's temperament to be infused into her. We often can be challenged by people around us and by having His temperament in us we can interact with His character around us and be more Christlike to others who challenge us. Another example is We are to commend ourselves to His goodness instead of worrying about our concerns. WE often obsess over situations we can not change. Proverbs 18:10 the name of the Lord is a strong tower. We are to go to the strong tower for strength and ask Him to be our strong tower. She also prayed that the joy of the Lord would be her strength. This book is deep , rich and personal. It takes passages of Jane Austen's prayers and ties them to our lives. I am thankful to have been able to review this book for Bethany publishers and the book was given to me by netgalley.
I absolutely adore Jane Austen and this was the perfect addition to my daily prayer. I loved how much insight one can gain from this book!
