I has happy to receive an ARC of Cut and Run by Mary Burton. This is my fifth book I have read by Mary Burton and I think one of her best in the romance/thriller/suspense genre. Cut and Run will have you hooked at the prologue and you will not want to put it down until the very last word. This book was lighter on the romance side, but the plot twists and turns kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had figured out the killer, another plot twist surprised me. I hope Mary Burton continues with these great characters. Thank you to Mary Burton, Netgalley, and the Publisher for an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
Thanks to Netgalley, Mary Burton, and Montlake Romance for this Digital ARC! I LOVE Mary Burton but honestly, the Texas Rangers series is my least favorite. I was disappointed to hear that an addition to that series would be next. I have changed my mind!! Cut and Run is great!! I was very happy with the characters of Faith and Michael and I really like my romantic suspense to center more on the suspense, rather than the romance. This one definitely does that. Fast-paced and difficult to figure out the culprit. Keep 'em coming Mary!!
DNF @ 20% - This was my second read by this author! I really enjoyed my first read by her so I chose to read this one as well but unfortunately, this one didn't work out for me! The writing didn't work out for me! But as you see its high ratings, I think it was just me not the book! So read it and hope you enjoy it! Thanks to Mary Burton, Netgalley and Montlake Romance for the advanced digital copy in exchange an honest review.
A spine-tingling read. I enjoyed how the author kept me on the edge of my seat. Good solid writing. A+
Will you die like the others? Paige is still hoping that someone will find her before it is too late but her last escape attempt ended badly. And she fears that she will die after the baby is born. She found the magazines that the other girls had hidden and she knows that things didn't end well for them. Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden has just gotten a new case and the victim was tortured before he was killed. Hayden knows that old man Crow had enemies he always did things different to others. But who would have done this to him? Dr Faith McIntyre is the local medical examiner and it is her job to find some peace for Jack Crow's family but she isn't expecting her to dig further into her adoption. Faith is hoping that when she meets Crow's daughter Macy that things will start to make sense but this is just the beginning of a really sad story. Macy knows that her father Jack was up to something and he has left her some clues but they don't make sense until she goes to the abandoned farmhouse and ultimately it might cost her life. The more Hayden & Faith deep the more they realize that the missing girl Paige could still be alive and that they are running out of time. They will need to continue to dig into the girls that they have found and they need to get justice for them and there missing babies. They have stumbled upon someone that would do anything for a child and they will need to stop it from continuing. Will Faith & Macy be able to find out about their mother and why she died? Will Hayden actually make a honest woman out of Faith as he has already lost one woman that he loved? Can Faith continue to pretend that Hayden doesn't mean more to her? A great read keeps you on your seat. Liked Macy the most as she never would have given up and she was loved by her parents even though she lost touch with her old man she did everything she could to find his killer and if not for her they would never have found Paige and gotten justice for the other women. I was lucky enough to receive a copy via netgalley & the publishing house in exchange for my honest review.
Anyone who has picked up a novel by Mary Burton knows she does romantic suspense and does it very well and Cut and Run is no exception. This novel is a bit more on the thriller side than the romance but there’s still that relationship between the characters that fans want to see.
When a body of a man is found Faith McIntyre is the active medical examiner on the case and after her examination she tries to make contact with the victim’s daughter, Macy Crow. What Faith doesn’t know is that Macy does make her way to town and begins looking into her father’s murder herself being an FBI agent.
Macy however makes the mistake of catching the attention of the wrong person and is run down by a truck. Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden shows up at the scene of the accident to find the injured woman looks exactly like Faith whom he has been seeing. This leads Faith and Hayden to begin looking further into the case.
Cut and Run of course is one that changes the point of view along the way mostly being the two main characters but also a few other views mixed in. The story however is one that is easy to follow as secrets of the past came hauntingly back to mix in with the intensity of the current time. Some may want to see a bit more romance but I rather enjoyed this one for the thrilling ride that is was and would definitely recommend checking it out.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via Netgalley.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The murder mystery was intriguing.
I received an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.
Cut and Run by Mary Burton
WOW! Another wonderful book by Mary Burton ~ One I absolutely could not put down!
Evil lurks here and there and everywhere…and…there are surprises around every corner…especially in this book!
This book…not sure what to say since I do not want to give the plot away so…
What I liked:
* Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden – quiet in some ways but definitely smart, smooth and just what the doctor ordered.
* Faith McIntyre – medical examiner and in a physical relationship with Hayden – adopted, a twin and waiting to unravel clues that will come her way
* Macy Crow – FBI agent, Faith’s twin, also adopted, hit by a truck when following clues. She is strong, smart and hopefully will get a book of her own in the future.
* Paige and Kat – pregnant teenagers who were feisty, strong and tenacious…definitely tough cookies and they needed to be in this story.
* The way the story was gold and how it unraveled a bit at a time.
What I didn’t like:
* The bad guys. I know I was supposed to dislike them but it was definitely easy to do so since they were BAD to the bone.
* The blindness to evil and wrongdoing shown by one character at the end of the book.
Did I like this book? Yes indeed!
Will I read more by this author? Without a doubt!
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
Cut and Run was an incredibly enjoyable read with a fantastic suspense plot and an amazing set of characters.
Medical examiner Faith McIntyre is no stranger to death, but the torture and murder of Jack Crow feels different. After contacting his daughter FBI agent Macy Crow, Faith is awaiting the woman’s arrival when she receives word that Macy was the victim of a hit and run and is barely clinging to life in the hospital. The mystery of what she was doing in Austin after midnight is puzzling. Even more bizarre is the fact Macy is Faith’s mirror image, the twin sister she never knew she had. While following clues Macy left behind, three unmarked graves are discovered on an abandoned ranch containing the remains of women missing for thirty years. With bodies new and old piling up, it becomes clear someone is willing to kill to keep these secrets buried.
Faith always knew she was adopted growing up but she hit roadblocks every time she tried to discover more information. While Faith is secure in who she is, she can’t help but wonder about her past. Faith devotes herself to helping kids without families and spends much of her time helping at a children’s shelter in town. Faith has formed a connection with one of the teenagers there Kat and I really enjoyed their relationship.
Mitchell, the Texas Ranger Faith works with, is the brother of Kate Hayden the female main character of The Last Move which was a nice little bonus for those who’ve read that book. Faith and Mitchell’s relationship is already in place when the book starts although it is a physical only one at first. I enjoyed how much these two understood each other plus the physical scenes were very well done. My only issue with the relationship was that it felt like one minute they were no strings and the next they loved each other.
As to the plot, the connection between Faith and Macy added a neat layer to the story and I found myself really invested in finding out their history. The parts dealing with the three women found buried at the abandoned ranch was also a really good storyline. This author is amazing at weaving together different plots to create an interesting mystery and this book was no exception. There was the perfect amount of suspense and a solid payoff when it came to the big reveal.
Cut and Run was a phenomenal read in terms of the suspense side, I was just hoping for a little more in terms of the romance. Overall though it was an amazing read and I definitely recommend the book if you’re looking for a book with a great suspense plot.
An exciting and fast paced thriller with good characters and lots of twists and turns. A very descriptive and realistic writer.
Intense and intriguing mystery with lots of twists and turns. Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden and Medical examiner Faith McIntyre team up to find the killer and the missing girls when they come across an unconscious FBI agent Macy Crow who looks like a twin to Faith.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the eARC
Mary Burton has done it again. She is an author who takes the reader on a roller coaster ride leaving you guessing until the very end. CUT AND RUN is a fun, suspenseful read with characters who capture your interest immediately. I had a hard time putting the book down.
Medical examiner Faith McIntyre is supposed to meet the daughter of a homicide victim when she is shocked to discover the woman in question, Macy Crow, has been critically injured in a hit and run. She is totally floored to discover Macy looks exactly like her. She knows she was adopted, but is I possible she has a twin.
Texas Ranger, Mitchell Haden, is investigating what happened to Macy as well as the murder of her father. As Mitch and Faith follow the puzzle pieces they uncover, they discover a dark secret that directly impacts Faith. Unraveling this secret might even cost Faith her life.
A great story. A great read.
I was given this book to read in exchange for an honest review.
This book captures your attention from the get go. So many twist and turns but at the end it all comes together. I am really liking Mary thriller books.
Salvage yard owner Jack Crow is tortured and murdered shortly after calling old friend and Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden asking to see him. Hayden arrives at the Yard in time to find Jack's dead body and asks Medical Examiner Faith McIntyre - colleague and romantic interest - to carry out the autopsy on Jack. Meanwhile Jack's daughter, Macy Crow - an FBI Agent - has been contacted regarding her father's murder and immediately decides to do what she can to investigate the matter herself. Very soon after arriving however Macy is left fighting for her life in hospital following a deliberate hit and run. It also becomes clear to Hayden upon arriving at the scene that Macy Crow is identical in looks to Dr Faith McIntyre which leads them both on a breath taking investigation connecting missing pregnant teenagers and gruesome torture and murders whilst trying to find the links with this to Faith and Macy's birth and subsequent adoptions.
I genuinely was surprised by the climax as I had not guessed the final twist and unmasking of the killer.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and think it would appeal greatly to fans of Karen Rose (also a favourite author of mine). I would love to see a follow up or series with the characters of Hayden, Faith and Macy as I think there is great scope within them.
Many thanks to Netgalley and publishers for the ARC - 4.5 stars from me!
Really good!
This was a good mystery from the start. I am still in shock of the Mastermind! I liked the relationship of Faith and Hayden. I want to thank the author, Mary Burton, for this arc copy!
Mary Burton has become one of my favorite authors. She writes with details and facts and never leaves you hanging. Some of her writing is a little gruesome but never to much.
First Thoughts:
I just became aware of this author just a couple of months ago and I am officially addicted to her writing. I always like a good mystery with romance thrown into the thick of it. This has the right amount of action and suspense. Plenty of moments of surprise. If you're into diverging yourself in a world of solving crimes and finding time to find the good in life this is the book for you!
Summary:
Faith is a medical examiner who finds herself immersed in a world of crime that is tightly connected to her life in more ways than one. She soon embarks not only on a journey of trying to solve a crime but unraveling her lineage.
Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden is a hard-edge man who is hell bent on decoding clues until he solves the crime. He's all about his job and he's not looking for love. But this latest crime has him in the sights of a beautiful woman named Faith.
Soon the two join forces together trying to not only solve the hit and run of Faith's possible twin sister FBI agent Macy Crow but the trail she left behind before her hit and run.
The clock is ticking down and bodies are piling up, will these two decode the clues before the killer comes after them?
Plot:
I loved this story, it had a lot of ups and downs that left the reader reading late into the night. There were plenty of twists and surprises along the way to keep the reader entertained. There were scenes of crime and scenes of redemption. Lots of scrambling and a race against the clock. You can really get a sense of the urgency in each scene. There were parts where it allowed the reader to take a breather and have a little comic relief. If you're into murder mysteries excitement this is down your alley. There were a couple of predictable scenes, like I guessed some of the things from nearly the beginning of the book but the main mystery of all; the person who did it, was a surprise to me. So it didn't deter me from enjoying the book.
Romance:
Ahh, romance. There was some sexual tension between Faith and Hayden. They even had a interesting past and soon the two are fighting to keep things how they were before but love's cupid keeps drawing them closer. Though this wasn't the major part of the book, it was beautifully in-twined and created a great atmosphere for a mystery romance.
Characters:
Faith was an interesting character. It didn't take me long to get connected with her. Though she was a bit naive in some scenes. But she was strong emotionally in others. Hayden was a little cold to me in the beginning. It took me awhile to get connected to him; to even root for him. Which is a little odd because all of her previous books I've read from Ms.Burton I've always immediately or close to immediately connected with them. Macy Crow was a secondary character but she added texture to the story that allowed the main plot to flow. The serial killer was a great mystery and loved reading from his mind. *shiver*.
Transformation of the Character:
Faith in a way transformed but it wasn't as noticeable as others have been in the past. It was subtle and fluid. Hayden's transformation was more noticeable and I enjoyed seeing him grow into the man he was meant to be.
Description:
The information was well researched and though I'm no medical examiner or law enforcement officer it really rang true to me. The description of the autopsies and the way the clues were left really left a realistic feel to the story. The scenes of the crimes were tastefully done, done enough to get the point across but not too grisly. I just really enjoyed how each scene was described from the scenery down to the clues. They were all important factors to the story. The way the characters minds were described were well established too. It allowed the reader to understand what was happening and why it was happening. Just the description of the characters themselves allowed the reader to really picture how they appeared and identify them later on without a single name being uttered.
Style:
This was written in third person and multiple point of views. Being written in third person just allowed the reader to see a wider view of each scene and get to understand the information in a better perspective. And being written in multiple point of views allowed the reader to understand the story better. To get all the pieces of the story and put it together into a giant puzzle. Very well thought out. And Burton's writing is a real treat. Very easy to get lost in her writing and pass the hours. This book will be finished before you even really even grasped everything that was written in the story.
Quote of the Book:
"Two buzzards circled overhead...Like him, buzzards didn't have an elegant reason for being. Like him, they cleaned up mess death left behind."
Last Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book and will continue to look forward to other books written by Mary Burton. She has a way with mysteries that has really grabbed my attention. Totally recommend this to any reader in for a fast and unbelievable read! Highly recommend to go pre-order this book now!
Mary Burton is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors and Cut and Run was an awesome example of why. It is a great stand alone novel but you’ll see familiar characters from other novels and I really appreciate the continuity when I’m reading. If you’re looking for twists and turns with a great plot line you’ll find it here. Perfect novel for your first Mary Burton read. You’ll definitely come back for more. Thanks to the author and her publisher for letting me read the advanced reader copy of Cut and Run!
Mary Burton proves herself to be an author worth taking note of in her masterful suspense, Cut and Run. Medical examiner Faith McIntyre's world is shaken when she discovers the secrets her parents kept regarding her adoption lead to a twin sister who has just landed in the hospital as the victim of a hit and run. Macy and Faith's connection to another victim lead Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden deeper into a dark world of kidnapped women and hush-hush adoptions.
The story immediately draws readers into the mystery as a potential lead is found tortured and dead. Mitchell Hayden takes the reins and quickly and brings Faith into the investigation. Even though Faith has possible personal ties to the case she still makes it clear that once she's invested she's seeing it through to the end. I loved both Mitchell and Faith because they're driven and focused on the case, despite personal trauma. I thought it very interesting that they had a physical arrangement that didn't involve any labels and kept it professional around others. It was a positive change of pace from romantic suspense plagued with instant attraction story lines. There wasn't any angsty drama between the two struggling to figure out their relationship, so the plot was absolutely driven by suspense.
Cut and Run is a dark romantic suspense you just can't miss! Mary Burton guides readers through a plot that leads to a satisfying end that has just the right amount of closure and still allows the characters' futures to be left up to conjecture. It's perfect for fans of Rita Herron or Cynthia Eden! If any of her stories are like Cut and Run, I'm definitely looking forward to reading more!
