Deranged is the 3rd book in the Jessie Cole series. I loved the first 2 book so I was excited to have the opportunity to read this one. I definitely recommend reading the previous books before reading this one.
This book was well-written but I felt it was missing a wow factor that the 2 previous books had. This was a quick read with a lot going on in it. I look forward to reading the next one in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for giving me a copy of T.R. Ragan's "Deranged" in exchange of an honest review.
Good story, have been a fan of T.R. Ragan for a while and look forward to each release! Great plot and characters!!
There is a serial killer on the loose and they have P.I. Jessie Cole in their crosshairs.
T.R. Ragan is back with her third installment in the Jessie Cole series. Building on the characters from previous books, Cole is still helping car accident/amnesia victim reclaim his past. The son of a convicted murderer, Ben Morrison desperately is seeking to know more about the tragic night when his girlfriend was murdered by his father. As bits and pieces of his memories begin to resurface, he is more confused than ever about the role he may have played in her death. Cole also has been hired to follow a cheating wife but when she is found stabbed to death, the evidence suggests that she is another victim of the killer who is on the loose. How do all of the murders tie together and what do they have to do with Morrison? Cole wants to know, but knowing may cost her own life or the lives of those she dearly loves.
Deranged is solidly written murder mystery/thriller. It will keep you interested and reading to the end. It's actually a very quick read, lots of dialogue makes it so. Because it is the third in the series, there are multiple throwbacks to past events and characters, things that I should have known but didn't because this was my first book. Some books in a series work fine as a stand alone, you get enough information woven into the back story that you don't notice that you've not read the previous books. Deranged is not one of those books. I suggest that you go back and read the first two Jessie Cole books if you are interested in this one. Conversely, there are enough spoilers in this one that you should not read it before the others.
If you are a fan of Ragan and this series then I'm certain that you will enjoy Deranged.
*I received an egalley from #Netgalley and #Thomas&Mercer in exchange for this review.
Jessie is a Private investigator working in Sacramento barely making ends meet. She's raising her niece, Olivia who is about to turn 16 and wants more independence. Jessie finds herself at odds with this because she is well aware of the dangers that await a young girl out by herself.
She's also helping her good friend, Ben Morrison out who was in a car accident several years ago and suffers from a form of amnesia that has blocked his childhood memories out. Ben's starting to have terrible flashbacks and suffers from extreme emotions that are not in his character. He's moved out of his family home until he can be sure that he isn't a danger to his family. Ben's a crime reporter, so he's seen some pretty awful things. These feelings are way too intense, and the flashbacks are very vivid. Could they be from something Ben's reported or could it be more sinister? Meanwhile, Jessie Boyfriend, Colin Grayson is a homicide detective with the Sacramento P.D. He's chasing down what looks to be a serial killer.
This book has several different plots going, and it will keep you in reading until you get to the end. I haven't read the first two books in this series, but I will be that's a given. I would have enjoyed it more if I had a little more information on how all these different characters' fit together but I found, but it didn't take away from the book at all. It looks like she's having another book released in 2019, I'll be looking forward to it for sure. Disclosure: I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book for my honest opinion, the opinions I expressed above are my own.
Great third book in the series
This is the third book in the Jessie Cole series, after HER LAST DAY and DEADLY RECALL. I've enjoyed this author's writing for years, both under the name of T. R. Reagan and Theresa Ragan.
Private investigator Jessie Cole continues to delve into journalist Ben Morrison's past (at his request). He's had amnesia since a terrible car crash ten years ago and things that are turning up about his past seem to be pretty damning, showing a dark side to Ben.
Also, there's a serial killer on the loose and people are getting killed right and left.
If you haven't read the first two books in the series, you really should. All the books have been exceptional so far.
I received this book from Amazon Publishing through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
Ever since an accident left him with retrograde amnesia, Ben Morrison has worked to rebuild his life and to put together the pieces of his past. Private investigator Jessie Cole is helping him, but the people who remember Ben’s troubled childhood are reluctant to talk to either of them. And the few who will discuss Ben’s early years have disturbing things to say.
A husband requesting surveillance of his wife sidetracks Jessie’s investigation. But her vigil comes to an abrupt end when tragedy strikes and a young detective draws a connection with other murder cases. Without warning, in her search for the truth, everything Jessie values is suddenly at risk.
Strong character development, an intriguing plot, and unexpected twists keep the tension mounting as the disparate plotlines come together in an exciting denouement. Readers new to the series will find enough information to enjoy the story as a standalone, but checking out the two previous books will provide some enriching background for the narrative.
Astute readers may identify the murderer before the reveal late in the story, but the unfolding story surrounding the deranged killer will keep the pages turning. The only unfortunate thing about this book is the excessive, unnecessary use of offensive and coarse language. It is a blight in the otherwise wonderful telling of the tale.
Recommended.
I received an advance copy of this e-book from Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley.
#Deranged #NetGalley
Is Ben a good guy, loving family man plagued with amnesia? Or is he’d a heartless killer, fooling all those who love him? It’s up the Jessie to figure out and you’re kept in the dark as to which personality will win out. T. R. Reagan writes books that leave the reader satisfied in the end.
Deranged by author T.R. Reagan is a breathtaking novel with intense suspense that builds around one man accident. Twist and turns everywhere with a plot thick and smooth makes the characters in this book pop. I would absolutely recommend this book.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of Deranged in exchange for an honest review.
I'm such a fan of this series. I love Ben. I love how the author is slowly revealing Ben’s sordid past a little bit at a time. When I finished Deranged, I was so invested in the story I found it hard to sleep. I couldn’t stop thinking about how wonderful Ben is, and trying to figure out how each damning piece of information could possibly be inaccurate.
I’m still a little lukewarm about Jessie and Colin’s relationship. We’re three books in and I’m waiting for a little something deeper. There’s only one book left to convince me, and I have a feeling the series will end with that one pretty large flaw. Makes me a little sad. It’s very nearly perfect.
Ben doesn't know if he's a murderer, but Jessie is sure he's not and is doing everything to prove it. But when more and more is unraveled Jessie isn't so sure anymore.
Fast paced and well written, "Deranged" kept my interest from start to finish and I really enjoyed the book. Well done and highly recommended!
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer!
Third installment of PI Jessie Cole. If you’re following the series, you should read this one asap! Jessie is still on the journey to help Ben recover his past. As she collects more pieces of his past she will find herself doubting if Ben is actually what she’s afraid of: a cold killer. Meanwhile, another serial killer will hit close to Jessie: Olivia her niece. Better than the 2nd in my opinion, this is a fast pace, heart-racing all the way to the end. It amaze me the way she brings to life ruthless serial killers and their backstory. I can’t wait for the next one.
Deranged by T.R. Ragan is the highly recommended third book featuring private investigator Jessie Cole.
Jessie has been trying to help crime reporter Ben Morrison investigate his past. After an accident left him with amnesia, he can't remember who he was before the accident, but from what he does know, he had a troubled childhood. His father is in prison and his sister wants nothing to do with him. He has also been having troubling memories or are they flashbacks of him acting violently. Compounding Ben's emotional turmoil, he has temporarily left his family because he does not trust his daughter's soccer coach. Jessie and her assistant Zee have been trying to help Ben, when they also take on a domestic surveillance case from a man who wants his wife watched.
The action moves quickly in the story and a serial killer on the loose adds a great deal of trepidation since you know he will obviously be continuing his crimes. Jessie's boyfriend Colin Grayson, a local homicide detective, is on the cases along with a rookie he is mentoring. Jessie's niece, Olivia, 15, is also adding some stress to Jessie's life because she is starting to take on babysitting and dog walking jobs in an attempt to earn money for her own car someday.
The chapters alternate between the various characters point-of-view - including Jessie, Ben, Colin, the killer, as well as others. You can follow along along with the different perspectives and discoveries as they happen through the eyes of the characters involved. Ultimately, this will allow you to put the pieces together and figure out some of the answers before the end. Many readers will figure out who the killer is, but the real point is cheering on the characters as they uncover clues.
The writing is good and the cases and characters are an interesting mix. I did notice a few instances of repeated phrases ("sooner rather than later" being one) that occurred a bit too close together in the text so the repetition was obvious. Setting that aside, however, the fast paced action and discoveries moved the novel along quickly to a satisfying conclusion. This was my first book in the series and I didn't feel I missed much by not reading the first two.

Deranged – T.R. Ragan
I was fortunate to receive this novel from Netgalley.com as an Advance Reader Copy, in exchange for an objective review.
Jessie Cole is a ‘kick-ass’ private investigator who manages her own business. Presently, she is attempting to assist a friend in regaining his memory by researching his past. Along with her office manager, the hyperactive Zee, she scratches out a living doing what she loves, occasionally accompanied by boyfriend Colin Grayson, a detective.
Ben Morrison, presently estranged from his wife, is using her office as a place to bed down as he searches for his elusive memories. Injured in a motor vehicle accident years ago, Ben struggles with amnesia, and still has no idea of the kind of person he was ten years ago. Together, he and Jessie have learned some disconcerting facts that suggest a highly dysfunctional home environment, with a parent in jail.
Meanwhile, a serial killer has come to town, and begins leaving victims in his wake – young women with dubious backgrounds – along with a telltale sign. As Jessie attempts to help Colin with this newest problem, a killer sets his sights on Jessie…
This was the first book I’ve read by TJ Ragan, but it will not be my last, and I cannot wait for the next one! This is the third in a series, and as it leaves some cliffhangers, I am going to presume that they should be read in order. Fabulous read, genuine in-depth characters, and more than enough intrigue to keep you reading well into the night!
4.5 Stars!
Deranged was a phenomenal read featuring a fantastic storyline that sheds some light on a character’s mysterious past.
For the last ten years, reporter Ben Morrison has attempted to piece together his past after a car accident left him with amnesia. After Ben hits in a wall in his search, he turns to his friend PI Jessie Cole for help. Upon agreeing to help Ben with his search, Jessie is sidetracked by a client requesting surveillance on his wife whom he believes is cheating. When the client’s wife and her lover are found murdered with evidence linking an elusive serial killer, Jessie is pulled into the deranged killer’s game which is twisting ever closer to Ben’s forgotten past.
The characters in this series are all so fantastic and I love how well the author interconnects everyone’s stories. Jessie continues to be a complete badass while still having vulnerable moments making her very relatable. Ben is back and still focused on learning more about his past and how it’s affecting who he is now. Jessie’s niece Olivia is wonderful and I loved how resourceful she is. Olivia’s dog Higgins continues to be adorable and I’m always happy to see him. Colin, Jessie’s homicide detective boyfriend returns with a new rookie partner who isn’t as dumb as he was originally made out to be. Zee, Jessie’s kickass assistant returns and provides some great insight into the cases. Ben’s family make numerous appearances and I was happy with the way things turned out in their storyline.
This book provides a lot of answers about Ben’s past and I’m interested to see where things will go from here with the information we now know about him. What was interesting about this book was that Jessie wasn’t as directly involved in the murder investigations like she was in previous books. This time around she stuck more to trying to figure out Ben’s past and we instead got chapters from Colin’s point of view showing him and his partner working the murders. I found this to be a good choice and I liked getting to see Colin’s side of things and how they’d overlap with Jessie or Ben’s points of view. Ultimately I did end up guessing the killer’s identity early on but the build up to the final reveal was well done and I liked how the story wrapped up.
Deranged is definitely my favorite book in the Jessie Cole series thus far and I’m excited to see what future installments hold.
Deranged is Book 3 in the PI Jessie Cole series and my favourite so far. I highly recommend that you read these books in series order because there is a lot of background history on the characters that you will miss if you read this as a stand alone. Their histories are quite detailed and in depth and I feel that you will enjoy the book more if you read from book 1.
This book is full of action from the get go, in this book Jessie is investigating her friend Ben’s past, is he a killer or a victim of an abusive dysfunctional family? Along the way a killer comes in to the mix to complicate matters. Ben is confused and conflicted, he has amnesia and doesn’t know where to go or who to turn to. Is he getting flashbacks or false memories? It’s tearing his family apart so he turns to his friend Jessie for help. Can she get to the bottom of this complicated case?
I really enjoyed this book, it was entertaining and kept me engaged and turning the pages late in to the night. I had a couple of OMG moments which I didn’t see coming and the action built up to a really explosive ending. This book certainly wasn’t boring, I liked the style of writing and the characters and I felt that T.R. Ragan did a good job of getting a sense of tension over, it was very suspenseful. Deranged was a great book and I look forward to the next one from T.R. Ragan.
I am going to give it a very well deserved 4 stars, I thoroughly enjoyed it, if you are fan of T.R. Ragan I think you will like it too.
Is Ben a murderer? Jessie doesn't think so and he doesn't know. Seriously, he's got amnesia. Luckily he's also got Jessie, who is one strong woman, who is helping him to sort things out. She's also got a business to run and oddly when two people she has been surveilling are found dead, there's a itchy feeling about identity of the murderer. There are good twists here but even better are the characters. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A fast paced, well done thriller.
This is the third book in this series. I did not read the first two so I had to figure out the back story. This is a romantic suspense= a little dark- with several different threads running through this book and it has lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed the characters and liked how it tied up all the story lines. I just wish the publishers would quit putting every thing in trade size

I’d like to thank Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Deranged’, third in the PI Jessie Cole series written by T R Ragan, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Following a car accident Ben Morrison is suffering from amnesia and his friend Jessie Cole is helping him delve into his past and find out whether he was responsible for the murders of his mother and friend Aly Scheer for which his father Lou Wheeler is currently serving time in prison. When Jessie starts getting phone calls from a stranger who knows her every move she becomes anxious that someone could be stalking her.
After reading the two previous novels in the series I’ve been looking forward to the third and I’m delighted to say that ‘Deranged’ has not disappointed me. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading more of Jessie and her romance with Detective Colin Grayson, her niece Olivia who’s fast growing up, colleague Zee, and what happened in Ben’s past that he can’t remember. There are several threads running through the story which all add to the excitement and make for a very gripping thriller. This is a thoroughly enjoyable novel with twists and turns, drama, action, suspense, and finally the conclusion which is nail-biting as Jessie isn’t the only one to face danger. I know this is the final part of the trilogy but I don’t want Jessie Cole to come to an end, so please can we have another?
Deranged by T.R. Ragan
Meet Jessie Cole. Private Investigator. AS she attempts to discover the hidden past of a man who has lost his memory, she finds that one answer opens more disturbing questions. To make matters worse, a serial killer is watching her every move.
There is a ton of suspense and danger in this story. A real run read. I’ll be looking for more from Ms. Ragan.
A little honesty on my part: When I picked up this book, I did not realize that it was the third Jessie Cole installment. I did have to put together a lot of the back story, but the author leaves enough clues that you are not totally left on your own. If anything, it has raised my interest towards her previous chapters. For transparency, I received an Advanced Reading Copy in return for an honest review.

Thank you NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer and T.R. Ragan for this incredible ride. Do yourself a favor and please read book 1 and 2 first. It lays the ground work and you can watch the incredible growth with all the main characters. Gut wrenching from chapter to chapter with little down time. Murder, suspense and you see the peices coming together. You are right there with them. I was dismayed with some of the past history brought up with Ben. I thought no, no. Actually I still don't really know, know. Yup waiting for more T R Ragan! Zee made me smile, a little snark and truth for you all, Zee has it in spade. And Izzie wow, she is really growing up fast, and more importantly, smart and strong. Higgins, my baby, 4 legged Higgins. Not enough Colin for me, and Jessie tied it all together. Jessie is the center of this story, holding everyone together,
