An interesting mystery that moves along at a good pace. Enjoyed the character of Hillary Greene and looking forward to getting stuck into the series as a whole now. Good twist towards the end, didn't guess that one until it was revealed.
Detective Hillary Greene has returned to the police after retirement as a consultant on cold cases. She is given two new young colleagues to watch and recommend for the police. They have reasons for joining through the cold case unit and Hillary is suspicious. They are given the case of Felix Olliphant killed on New Year’s Eve of the millennium. At a party he knew only the hostess. Over the limit though he never drank. A man everyone liked so who would kill him. You are enthralled by Hillary and her following the trail of the original suspects and witnesses. She is a very engaging detective that keeps the story moving alone nicely.
I was given an ARC of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Top-notch British procedural with a solid protagonist in Hillary Greene. Even though this was #15 in the series, the backstory was kept to what was needed to move the story along now. Hillary Greene has had a stellar career solving crimes and even though she officially retired, she acts as a consultant on a cold case department. The case assigned to her now is interesting enough of a young successful interior designer killed at a new years eve party. What is the most intriguing is Hillary's management of the clues and her brand new assisstants. I will definitely be reading many more of th his series.
Thankyou to NetGalley, Joffe Booksand the author, Faith Martin, for the opportunity to read a digital copy of Murder At Midnight in exchange for an honest, unbiased opinion.
I enjoyed reading this book. The storyline was well written with plenty of twsts to keep you hooked. Ms Martin certainly knows ow to engage with her readers.
Worth a read.
Having only read this one in the series, I have to say I really impressed with it.
The plot was well written and the back story has you guessing. I genuinely had no idea who the killer was til the author told us.
Excellent mystery, well worth a read.
My first Hilary Green adventure, I enjoyed cover to cover. Not exactly compelling but an enjoyable read throughout. I'm looking forward to being able to sample more...
This is the fiftienth book in the long running Detective Hillary Greene series - all enjoyable murder mysteries and very much character driven. Hillary gets another cold case to solve in a well rounded and engaging read. Whilst there is a timeline, I feel that each of these books can easily be read as a standalone should you so wish. Recommended.
A little romance, baffling mystery and Detective Hilary at the head of the cold case team. Complex plot, Wondering what motive the billionaire has for joining the team. Looking forward to reading the next book. Well written and enjoyable characters.
This time Hillary has two new members of her cold case unit, Wendy who dresses like a teenager and wealthy Jake who seems a bit too good to be true.
Felix was murdered on New Years Eve and as a popular man who would have wanted to kill him? There's also Hillary's progressing romance with her superior officer Stephen.
The characters are all very likeable and the plot moves along nicely. It does help to have read the previous books but it can also be read as a stand alone novel. It's a thoroughly enjoyable series so it's worth reading them anyway.
Thank you Net galley. I have read most of the Hillary Greene books. I enjoyed them the first time around and am enjoying them again now on my kindle. I love the portability!
DI Hillary Greene, is back from a short vacation. She meets her two new team members, Wendy Turnbull and John "Jake" Barnes. Wendy is dressed in goth and looks like a teenager. John is a millionaire and wants to help do his part to give back to society. Hillary doesn't trust him, she gets strange vibes from him. Together they are looking into an old cold case of Felix Edward Olliphant. 32 yrs old at time of death, at a New Year's Eve party at the end of 1999 or early 2000. As they go through the witness list from the original officer, they find it is incomplete. Conflicting information about the deceased. Then there is Hillary and Steven, her direct boss at work. They are in a relationship. Everyone knows it, and he is offered a new job away from Hillary. She is sure this is the end of their being together. Hillary does find something that points her into the direction she feels she needs to solve this case. What is it? Not telling. What happens with her and Steven? My lips are sealed tighter than an evidence locker. What about her new help? Strange things going on there too. You will need to read the book to find the answers. I would like to thank Net Galley for a copy of this book for me to review.
Great addition to a good series featuring an interesting character with a storyline that develops from book to book. Always enjoy reading her books
This is now book 15 in the long running Hilary Greene Series, which has seen her progress from being investigated in connection with her ex-husband's fraud case to being a brilliant Detective through retirement to where we find her now, working cold cases with a small team back at her old police station.
This time Hilary has just returned from a break and is given what looks like an impossible cold case to solve, involving a man who was murdered on New's Years Eve/New Year's Day 2000.
The case is quite complex as all of the witnesses were drunk the night in question so have hazy memories of the event in the first place, let alone all this time later.
Not only does Hilary have to solve this case she also has to deal with her boss and lover being transferred to another job and a new member of the team being very elusive and Hilary having to find out what he is hiding and what his objectives really are within the team.
The book progresses brilliantly and had me hooked as I spent the time trying to work out who could have killed him and why as there really didn't appear to be any motive for this murder.
I really like this book and the way the series has progressed has made me want to read more about Hilary, so I can't wait to have the question from the end of this one hopefully answered in the next book.
This was my first novel by Faith Martin and my introduction to DI Hillary Greene. Since Hillary is working on a cold case, the investigation centres around re-interviewing a string of witnesses and potential suspects. The case involves the murder of a man at a party on New Year’s Eve. The murder took place some nineteen years previously.
Mixed in with the suspect interviews, we get details of Hillary’s life. Hillary is in a relationship with her boss which has taken a more serious turn, but is the boss as interested in her as she is in him? They both have their insecurities.
There are also two new, volunteer members of Hillary’s team who are keen to learn from her, though one of them is not as straightforward as they seem.
I enjoyed the banter sprinkled throughout the writing as Hillary jokes with her police colleagues. Hillary is also highly competitive and competent, and is keen to keep up her impeccable reputation. The jokes kept the story moving along nicely.
In all this was a nice, well written murder mystery.
Another gripping read from Faith Martin , the cold case team have 2 new members and one of these has a secret that hopefully we will discover in the next instalment
5 stars and a must read for all fans
Another good story in this series. Although by now I'm getting used to the way the plot is build, so there are not many suprises anymore, I still like the series a lot. In this book a new second storyline is started, and even a third, so I'm looking forward to the next book.
I do not have to repeat here what happens in the story, because you can read that in the reviews that were posted earlier. I would like to say that I'm very happy to have 'discovered' this author. This series is a bit addictive, I think. I haven't read all the other books yet but I will surely do so in the future.
Thank you Netgalley and Joffe Books - for sending me this book and thus giving me a few pleasant reading days.
I have loved each and every book in the series featuring Hilary Greene. Each time Faith brings out another Hilary Greene book, I drop everything to read it and devour the book within a couple of hours. I am a Hilary Greene groupie. I eagerly picked up a copy of Faith’s new book ‘Murder At Midnight’ and began to read. Oh my giddy aunt, I absolutely, totally, utterly and bloody well adored reading ‘Murder At Midnight’ but more about that in a bit.
Hilary Greene is no longer a police officer in the strict sense of the word. She retired from the force a short while ago. Her superior officer knew that she wouldn’t be able to stay away though and he employed her as a civilian to work on the Cold Case quad. Hilary is a woman of a certain age, who isn’t particularly ambitious any more but she finds an enormous sense of job satisfaction from the fact that she helps to solve cold cases and achieves justice for the victims of such crimes and their families. Hilary has carved out a new life for herself in that she has lost a considerable amount of weight and this has led to more attention from the opposite sex and occasionally from her own sex. At the beginning of this book, we learn that Hilary is still in a relationship with her immediate superior, although the relationship seems a bit rocky. They both know that they can’t have a relationship and expect to work as they have been working. Hilary works well on her own but equally she works well as part of a team. Hilary wouldn’t ask anybody to do anything that she wouldn’t be willing to do herself. This book sees Hilary’s team gain 2 new members. Hilary isn’t exactly sure what to make of them and to start with she holds them at arms length until she susses out what’s what etc. It’s fair to say that Hilary is one feisty, strong, stubborn and determined woman. I certainly wouldn’t want to come up against her. Hilary on the rampage frightens colleagues and criminals alike.
Oh my days, I was addicted to this book from the moment I picked it up and began to read. It didn’t take me too long to get into the story and reading this book felt like reuniting with old friends. The more I read, the more I got into the story and the more I had to read. The pages and time flew past in a blur and in next to no time I had finished reading ‘Murder At Midnight’ which I was gutted about. I enjoyed everything about the book so much that I just wanted it to continue. As usual I took to Hilary from the start and I naturally felt protective towards her. To borrow a phrase from a television programme ‘you mess with her, you mess with me’ or at least that’s how I felt. The author’s writing style and well thought out plots are so convincing that I really did feel as though I was an invisible member of Hilary’s team. I found myself interacting with the book. Yes, before everybody shouts, I know this is a work of fiction but if I really enjoy a book, I tend to live the story. There were times during this book where I found myself tutting, shouting and so on as if the various characters could hear me.
To conclude, I absolutely adored reading ‘Murder At Midnight’ and I would definitely recommend it to other series. The series featuring Hilary Greene just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait for the next book. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a well deserved 5* out of 5*.
What a tangled web to sort out for Hillary and her new recruits in the cold case team, a murder that took place at midnight at the turn of the new century. How could someone stab a person to death at a party then vanish into thin air without anyone seeing anything? The initial enquiry hit a dead end, will they be able to do any better. Hillary is professional as always even though deep down she is worried about her relationship with Steven now his bid for promotion has been confirmed. She can't see how he will still be able to make the effort to see her when they will soon be working miles apart. I love this series thank you Joffee Books for the ARC.
One thing about author Faith Martin, she always leaves you hanging & waiting eagerly for the next installment of her Hillary Greene series. I can't wait for the last 2 books in this series....hoping that Hillary will get her happy ending! There were some new characters in Murder at Midnight, and I look forward to their return in the next book.
Hillary is back off a two week holiday and faced with two new recruits. The first is Wendy Turnbull, a friendly, if not overenthusiastic woman with a style that could only be described as Gothic. Then there’s Jake Barnes, a millionaire wonder kid, nicknamed The Boy Wonder, who claims that he wants to give back to his community but he seems to be hiding something.
Wary of both her new recruits, she given the task of solving the stabbing of Felix Olliphant, during a New Years Eve party at the turn of the Millennium, a case with no usable DNA or accurate witness statements.
Her love life seems to be hotting up with her boss Steven Crayle but he’s offered another job, what does the future hold for them?
Another intriguing cosy mystery from Faith Martin! It’s nice to be back with Hillary Greene for another book. This is a series I’ve consistently dipped in and out of over the past year and while I will suggest this could be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend that you’d read a few of the previous books first.
The case is a particularly tough one with a lack of eye witnesses and forensic evidence and I have to say I didn’t see the ending coming at all!
The introduction of new characters Wendy and Jake was a great idea too, giving a little more depth to the story and introducing a slightly more varied cast.
Also if like me you are enjoying the perpetually single Hillary’s new love life, the ending will have you dancing with excitement.
Overall Murder At Midnight is an intriguing cosy mystery that has left me very excited for the next book.
