"The Dysasters" by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast introduces Foster Stewart and Tate Taylor, two teenagers with extraordinary abilities thrust into a world of danger and mystery. With compelling characters and a thrilling plot, this paranormal fantasy captivates from the start. Foster's control over cloud formations and Tate's night vision are just the beginning of their powers, leading to a fateful collision that awakens their shared ability to control air. As they grapple with loss, they discover their true origins and face relentless pursuit. Fast-paced and full of twists, "The Dysasters" is a gripping start to a new series that leaves readers eagerly anticipating more.
The Dysasters is a great fit for young adult readers who enjoy fast-paced stories about teenagers discovering their unique superhero-like abilities tied to the elements, as they navigate an exciting and dangerous world.
Not the best work from these two authors. You would expect them to grow after years of putting out several Marked series books but nope. Even PC Cast's previous trilogy with two spin offs were better. I should have DNFed this but I didn't. I found the book entirely lack luster from the prints to the world to the characters. Kuddos for keeping the voice consistent though.
Having read P.C and Kristin's Casts first series, I wanted to give this a try. Sadly I could not finish and I think thier writing ,since the tail end of the House of Night series, has really failed to engage me.
Truly wonderful, it brought all the feels. Once again, I find myself swept away by the writing team P.C. and Kristin Cast. I couldn’t put the book down. The plot was well-paced. The dialogue flowed naturally. The characters were well-rounded. It was so good, it left me with a book hangover.
Thank you so much to NetGalley, P.C. & Kristin Cast, and St. Martin’s Press for giving me the opportunity to read and share my honest thoughts and opinions with others.
So first off, when I first heard that P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast were co-writing a brand new series for us I was over the moon. I absolutely adore the books these ladies write together. In case you don't know, the mother/daughter author duo wrote The House of Night series which was a wildly popular vampire/paranormal series in the early 2000's when vampires were all the rage and I devoured every single book and novella in that series. I own them all and have them displayed proudly on my shelves. So when I saw Dystasters, I was excited to dive into a new series from two authors I was familiar with and loved back in the day. The concept of this book was EXTREMELY intriguing to me. A group of teens that were genetically modified are able to control the weather and elements, it's something that is 100% up my alley. Majority of this book is told through dialogue or the characters talking out loud to themselves and sometimes those conversations were cringe-worthy for lack of a better word, but I still overall enjoyed the concept of spoken inner monologues as I have them with myself often. The characters themselves fell relatively flat for me, their growth is pretty minimal in this, but I have hope we will get to know the characters more in the following books. This book felt a lot more juvenile than I think I was hoping for, so I definitely think it will appeal to the younger side of YA readers. As for what I did enjoy, besides liking the overall concept of the book, this book definitely has all the trope-y superhero vibes. I don't read books like this very often so it was a nice change of pace. Plus, this book includes illustrations so it gives it a nice graphic novel touch without being overpowering if graphic novels are not your thing. It was definitely super cool to be able to see the characters brought to life in that way since the writing kind of stunted them. The pacing throughout this story was also done very well. There weren't really any parts of the story that dragged and once the action started it was so easy to fly through the rest of the book. As for the ending, I was pretty happy with it as well. I think it leaves a great setup for the next book without having too much of cliffhanger, I don't know how many more major cliffhangers my heart can take! All in all, although I did struggle with the writing and liking the characters, the concept and plot of this book was definitely enough to keep me intrigued to see where the characters will end up next!
I did not like this and would not recommend it, I quit reading about 15% in because the plot was incredibly boring
What an epic story!!!!!! What can I say about this story? The characters are amazing! Dynamic. Realistic. And relatable. The plot was absolutely amazing! My attention was held the entire time. Twists. Turns. Suspense. I love the entire story!!!! I was sad when I finished. Amparo has an amazing story!!!!
This is a YA fantasy featuring teenagers who were genetically altered as embryos to have special powers . The main characters of this book in the series are Foster , a very independent ,smart young woman and Tate , a brawny football player who both were bonded to Air . The teenagers are unaware of their powers and are being pursued by the genius who created them.
The book started out with a bang!!! Loved the premise . It was quite exciting and got me hooked . Once that first exciting part happened it started to be very predicable and the dialogue was unrealistic in places . I would read the second book as the premise is quite unique . The ending seemed a little rushed and seemed to be tied up a little too neatly.
I would continue the series as I want to see where the authors are going with the plot line .

This book sounded really cool with the premise of people with special abilities, I am always a sucker for those kinds of dystopians. This book was just way too full of typical YA tropes and I did not want to waste my time on it when I could be reading something better.
I am giving it two stars because the illustrations were really cool though.
This was an interesting read. I really want to give a 3.75 star rating, but 4 stars it'll get on Goodreads. This was definitely an action packed YA sci-fi story. It was definitely fast paced, but that meant there wasn't much for character development, especially with so many different characters to follow. The writing was pretty awesome, I really enjoyed the drama and action scenes.
The story follows 2 main characters and several other characters. I enjoyed each character for this being the first novel, but I wished there was more to knowing each character. Hopefully that comes as the story progresses.
The first book focuses on Foster and Tate who have the power of air. They were both spunky and butt-heads. I enjoyed their romance, but wish there was more to them growing as characters and a couple. However, considering this was fast paced, it flowed pretty well.
The addition of Charlotte and Bastien towards the end was cool. Especially with their element. I'm excited to see more of them in the sequel.
The Core Four: Eve, Matthew, Mark and Luke seemed to have been separate characters. They all seemed to work well with their given elements, but they each are insane. I do however like Matthew and Mark. Luke is just too hot tempered and Eve needs to start coming to terms with things.
Dr. Rick is a disgusting man. The way he did his wife and how he does his children all for science is crazy. I really hope he gets what he deserves by the hands of Foster.
Overall, for a first book it's pretty okay. Will continue reading on because there is definitely potential.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have read other books by this mother and daughter duo before and I was so not ready for this book. It is the first in a new series. Tate and Foster are fun and amazing characters. They have to go through a lot to try and stop Dr. Steward. They are just the first set of group of those who have changed before birth to have a connection to element. This book made me feeling a little strange at times. What is something like this was actually possible. That is kind of scary.
Not what I expected. I found it a bit slow but the writing is really good. This is probably a case of me not being in the proper mindset for this particular storyline. I am sure fans of the authors will enjoy it.

I have only read PC Cast's Tales of a New World Series, so I wasn't sure how I would like this one. I am going to DNF this for now because I'm not feeling too involved in the story or the characters. Right now they just seem annoying and I don't feel invested in finding out what will happen.
I may come back to this one day, but for now it's a DNF. The storyline has promise and is a great idea, it's just not for me right now.
I usually like all the P C Cast characters. This particular book was not the one that I would immediately like and put to my shelf. The writing here appears to be more of Kristin Cast than the mother, the mother has a bit different style and sense of humor. However, it is possible that for the audience it is intended * young adult' or even younger it might appeal more than to the adult readers. Believable characters acting irrationally definitely for teenagers!
I was already hooked with the synopsis, It’s action-pacted, and all the characters are essential to the story. One night, a deadly Tornado hits at a ball game and Foster and Tate are thrown into chaos together. This is the storm that will change both their lives for good. They quickly find out that a crazy scientist is after them for their " abilities." Foster and Tate must stop Dr. Stewart and his minions before he destroys their lives and the world!!The concept of this book was intriguing. The writing felt a little bit rushed but overall it was a great read!
DNF -- The Dystasters was my first book by this writing duo and I was so very excited to read it as I had heard so many great things about their stories. Sadly, I wasn't able to get into it when I first attempted so I put it down and tried again a bit later with no success. I cannot pinpoint a reason why I was unable to get into the story or the characters other than their writing just not being for me. I would like to try them again sometime in the future, but unfortunately this title wasn't for me.

Not gonna lie, but I spent a majority of the time for the first half of the book being super confused and having no idea what is going on. The reader is dropped into the story (which is usually exciting), basically in the middle of the action and with no description or real known plot. I really really tried to connect to the story and the characters but it was super hard. Even by the time I was 75% through with the story, I still was not completely certain what was going on or the overall point. A good majority of the book, the two main characters are hiding away...doing something...maybe researching (for something?)...dating(?)...which felt a little like the book was at a standstill- except for some random bursts of interesting elemental magic usage. Two secondary characters were introduced near the end and they were incredibly interesting, pulling me in the way the previous characters could not so I would love to find out what comes for them next.
The story is narrated by Foster, Tate and then occasionally the evil adults searching for the teens. About half way through, a few other perspectives are added into the mix. Foster was spunky, quirky and full of attitude. She was also at times a little bit unnecessarily mean and aloof- most of the time not on purpose, maybe could be attributed to her lack of overall social skills and loner personality. Her voice was the most dominant in the story and she was hands down the most developed character. I actually liked Tate better though, with his sweet disposition, charm and easy way of accepting basically everything, but I do not feel like I really knew him under the surface.
Also there was a romantic relationship that occurred...somewhere off page... that I wish I got to see unfold. We meet the two characters in a hostile situation that becomes a dangerous, life changing situation where they basically hate each other. And then next you know they are "best friends" and then romantically linked, but we never get to see them develop a romantic relationship, it is kind of just assumed since they are single, heterosexual teens in close living quarters and a dangerous situation (and as per the movie Speed, romances made in high stress situations never last). I get why Foster likes Tate, he was pretty and sweet, but Foster was a prickly cactus generally.
I think this was one of the books I most anticipated being released this year so maybe my expectations were too high when I jumped into the story. My confusion over almost everything aside, I would read the next book to see if there is more coming because I think this is an interesting idea and there could be potential.
This got off to a really rough start for me. I'd almost say it was a slow start, except it launches into the story with multiple tornadoes tearing up a town, dozens of people dying, and an epic chase scene - so how do you really call that "slow"? And yet... There's a LOT of information dump happening in the first third to half of this book, and it sort of bogs it down. Then again, this is also the first book that sets up a greater duology/trilogy/series, so some of that is to be expected, and once the preliminaries were out of the way the rest of the book took off flying.
Foster is pretty abrasive and not the most pleasant person, so if your enjoyment of a book relies on you actually liking the main character from the get-go, The Dysasters might not be for you. I could see the vulnerable girl underneath the tough exterior, and she kind of grew on me. Then there's Tate, who has a very Clark Kent, corn-fed midwestern boy-next-door thing going on, and he's very sweet (if a little bland). They're the pair of kids associate with the air element, and the main focus of the majority of the book. Honestly, I probably wouldn't keep reading this series if it were just Foster and Tate, but in the final third (or so) of the book we're introduced to Charlotte and Bastien (the water kids), and OH, my swoon, I stan a cajun and a southern belle. *fans self* YES. I am 100% here for the next book in the series just to watch a romance blossom between Charlotte and Bastien, please and thank you. Just from the bits we've gotten from Charlotte and Bastien, I already like their characters so much more than Tate and Foster too, so I'm glad there are some main characters I can connect with (because I am one of those people who needs to like the MC's to truly enjoy a book!) I'm also interested to see where P.C. and Kristin Cast go with the fire and earth pairs, and I'm hoping for more diverse characters like Charlotte and Bastien (please please please).
A note: there is a LOT of swearing, which for a YA novel especially felt gratuitous and off-putting to me. Even if this hadn't been billed as YA, I wouldn't love the "F---tastic Four" (which I'm assuming is a clever play on the Fantastic Four, which I get, but maybe drop it once and laugh and then move on?) Tate also called Foster a b---- a lot, which made me immediately like him a lot less, so we had some hurdles to cross. Also, while G-Pa as a character rocks... "G-Pa"? Really? Who calls their grandpa that? I question some of the linguistic choices, but okay...
This is the first book in The Dysasters ... series? quartet? trilogy? I don't see that it's been announced yet. Originally I assumed it would be a quartet with each book focusing on an element, but that doesn't seem to be the route Cast and Cast are taking (which is awesome, because if we hadn't met Charlotte and Bastien in book 1 I might not have made it to meeting them...) Some story arcs are closed within this book and you could theoretically read it as a stand alone, but it also sets the stage and larger ongoing story arc for the rest of the series. I'll be sticking around to give book 2 a change (because I need me some more Charlotte and Bastien!!)
Thank you to Netgalley and St Martin’s Press for an advance copy for my honest review.
I love PC Cast so going in I knew I’d mostly love this just as much. I really enjoyed this book. The story plot is absolutely fantastic. I was hoping for a different ending but loved it none the less.
