How does one review the end of an era? I can't believe there aren't any more Charley books to go. I just hope Darynda is able to bring back our supporting cast with books on Beep! I don't want to give any spoilers here.
Summoned to Thirteenth Grave, the finale in the Charley Davidson saga, is the end of an era. Having loved the series, but not every book, I was hesitantly excited about this final book. But it blew me out of the water. Jones was able to wrap up all the loose ends, balance the mythology, include a healthy dose of mystery and a very healthy dose of romance (my two favorite aspects of the series), and give us every moment we could want with this beloved cast of characters all in one final showdown and goodbye. I loved that each character, pair of friends, and group as a whole got their time to shine and chance to wrap things up, and I really loved that Charley and Reyes spent so much of the final book on the page together—kudos! There's one small aspect of the very end that I'm not sure about, and even though it's the last book, this one still ends in a cliffhanger (tease for the spin-off), but even so, this is a full-on five-star read, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey with Ms. Charley Davidson.
Incredible ending to the series. I was reluctant to read this book because I did not want the series to end but once I started I could not put it down.
Even though it is the last book from a series, for me it was the first book read. I enjoy the adventures of Charley Davidson, but I need to catch up with the rest of the books.
Thank you Netgalley for this paranormal adventure.
Some series are special, with characters who sneak in and become part of the family over the years—in this case, the members are a kaleidoscope of eccentricity and they are the creation of the very talented, Darynda Jones.
Grim Reaper, Charley Davidson, has gotten herself deported, but it’s not as simple as that. She made a choice and they have consequences: she’s now serving a hundred-year time-out off the earthly plane. Life on Earth, however, must go on and that’s what Charley is worried about while she toils and tracks the years as they slip by. Will she ever see her daughter again? What about Uncle Bob and Cookie and the rest of her loved ones?
When she’s thrust back to Earth, Charley’s got a few questions and she’s being tracked by the very man with those answers—her husband, Reyes. Is everyone alive? Safe? Just how long has she been away exactly? And what the hell has happened?
Albuquerque is now ground zero for demons pouring into our world. A hell dimension was opened—Reyes really didn’t mean to do it—and they’re definitely going to have to close the opening up regardless of the cost. Long-time fans may want to have a box of Kleenex nearby. Showdowns between good and evil aren’t for the faint of heart and characters you love will be lost. I’m one who is definitely sad to see them go.
I will always love this series for its powerful originality and humor, and will continue to recommend it for a good long time. As a fan from the start, I’ll be looking forward to whatever Darynda puts next on paper. Do yourself a huge favor, start your journey with Charley in book one and follow through to the explosive finale.

A good ending to a great series. I'm sad that the series is over, but I am impressed that it was a good ending at a logical point in the story.
The Charley Davidson Series has been a fave of mine since its inception. After First Grave on the Right, I was addicted. There was just something about a smart-ass, wise-cracking, grim reaper who named her boobs Danger and Will Robinson that just pulled me in. Throw in her relationship with Reyes –the hotter than hell god/demon and the heat between those two??? Just take my money already! There was so much that I got from this series that I forgave some of the stumbles in the later books. For instance, Charley and Reyes having to give Beep away to be raised by someone else, that entire book where Reyes was in the hell dimension, and Charley losing her memory, etc. I knew the series had to come to an end at some point, and I geared myself up for the final countdown. I expected an epic ending that I’d reminisce about for months, even years after. What I got was a feeling of disappointment that has me still wondering WTH just happened. There were a lot of goodbyes in this book with no emotion behind them. We find out some facts about those closest to Charley, which made no sense at all. An angel? Really? It felt like the latter part of the book was rushed in order to get to the big showdown…which kind of fizzled out like a bad firework. The “ending” of this was so unexpected (I’m still shaking my head over it) and lackluster that I seriously thought more was coming. I’m guessing Beep and Osh will have their stories, and I will be there for them. But damn I still feel like Charley, Reyes and the Scooby Doo Crew deserved a better send off than this.
*Note I received a copy of this book from Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for an honest review. I also purchased the Audible copy as well.*
This is book 13 in the Charley Davidson series and it appears to be the last installment according to Goodreads. This series has been around since 2011 and many of the older stories have been re-released with new covers. This series is a great one for paranormal fans as it deals with Charley being the Grim Reaper, her husband Reyes being a God and her Uncle being an angel. This book does tie up a lot of loose ends that I've been wondering about. It's not really a standalone book but I'm thinking a new reader could catch on pretty quickly. I hope Darynda Jones starts a new series soon, she's a talented writer and I'll look for her in the future. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Summoned to the Thirteenth Grave is the final installment in this series and it did not disappoint. Fabulous writing and as always fabulous characters.
This is the first book I have read by Darynda Jones. I got the ebook from NetGalley for an honest review and I am glad I did. The plot was well written and the characters were very interesting. I had very little problem catching on to the story. I liked this book so much I got the other 12. After I read them I think I will read this one again.
The series is over but what a fantastic book. Just like all the previous books I just couldn't (and didn't want to ) put it down.
I love the story and I love Charlie and all the other characters in the series.
This is a series I will be reading again in the future because I have loved every book..
This is another greataddition to this paranormal/ shifter series. If you like paranormal with some PI work and sass thrown in this is the series for you. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after reading this arc.
Well, here we are. Unfortunately, it’s time to say goodbye to Charley Davidson, but has it ever been an incredible ride!
This series has remained solid since the beginning and introduced me to some of my favorite characters. And Summoned to Thirteenth Grave had everything I love about the series.
Ahhh that ending, though!! <3
I almost didn’t read this book. Despite the love I had for the 12 books that came before it, the line in the blurb about 100 years passing was almost enough to make me skip this final book in the Charley Davidson series. And that would have been such a huge mistake. I don’t want to spoil the plot for you, but if this set-up is what’s holding you back, don’t let it.
Aw hell, I don’t know how I can talk about this book at all without at least a little bit of spoilage –at least on that front—so read at your own risk.
You still there? OK. The book does not jump 100 years in the future. It just feels that way to Charley. Instead, she lands back on earth a mere 10 days after she left. Of course, her sacrifice and the repercussions still had a dramatic effect. For Charley, of course, because she HAS lived a hundred years without her loved ones… and for everyone else because they thought they would never see her again. So this was like a homecoming in more ways than one.
Remember when Charley broke Reyes out of the God glass? This book is about facing the consequence of those actions. Demons are infecting the living and an area of infection is growing from Charley’s apartment outward. Charley and Reyes must figure out not only how to fight the demons, but to contain the encroaching dimension before it takes over the world. To do that, they have to rally the troops.
Big hats off to Darynda Jones, because she brought back just about every living side character (and a couple of dead ones) we’ve met over the course of this series. Not only do we get to spend time with them, Jones gives them a resolution. Of course, she sets many of them up for the Beep spinoff books: the bikers, Amber and Quenton, Osh. (I’ll come back to him in a minute.) But also, we learn more about Rocket and his sister and Strawberry –and their stories are resolved. Gemma. Uncle Bob. Remember that warning about him a few books back? We finally understand it. And wow… I didn’t see that one coming.
At the center of it all is the deep and abiding love Charley and Reyes share for each other and their daughter. It drives everything they do. And even after all this time, these books are so funny and sexy, I didn’t want to put this down.
Then, there’s the ending. It’s so bittersweet. I can’t tell you more and I’m not sure how I feel about it. But knowing a Beep series is ahead, it was probably the best resolution I could hope for. I’ve got to say, I am so intrigued about Osh… about what happened to him… and the role he will play in the future. Jones knows how to whet the appetite, I’ll tell you that.
Obviously, this book is not a starting point for a new reader, but it is an ending worthy of the series. Longtime readers don’t want to miss it. And new readers… go back to the beginning and check out First Grave on Right. Prepare for one hell of a ride.
An amazing ending to a spectacular series. This series is always in high demand at my library, and I know my readers will be both elated by this final chapter, as well as devastated that it's over.
Overall I enjoyed this final installment of Charlie & Reyes. The signature humour and snark was there, and several plot lines wrapped up satisfactorily. The only negative for me, was the cliff hanger ending, which appears to be a setup for future books featuring Beep.
can not believe that this will be the last installment of this series with which I have laughed, cried, sighed so much. Charley and Reyes will own a piece of my heart forever. They are one of my favorite couples of all time. What am I going to do with me now? I will miss them so much.
Over the years, this series has made me feel so many feelings and this time was no exception. As always Charley gives us her good dose of sarcasm that made me laugh out loud and her concern for her friends and loved ones goes beyond logic, she sacrifices her own happiness for others. Gahhh, she is my animal spirit.
And Reyes, Oh my God, will be one of my favorite book boyfriends of all time, sexy, sweet, hoooot, and his way of loving Charley so sweet, so disinterested, never ceases to amaze me, and melts my heart always, even made me spill a few tears.
As always the explosive chemistry between them is out charts, their love exceeds all limits, and they had me blushing, sighing and I caused a swarm of butterflies with their tenderness and scenes so sexy and erotic.
This last installment is full of twists and surprises, wow, my heart accelerated a thousand times and had me with my heart in my mouth. Situations that I never saw coming, ufff, the last chapters almost provoke a heart attack of so many emotions and action.
Secondary characters as always complement the story very well, and to my surprise the secondary stories of the book almost all are focused on them, which makes you discover secrets that I never expected.
If you are a fan of this series and you love Reyes and Charley as much as I do, you will not want to miss this last installment and live with one of the best couples their last adventure. I NEED BEEP'S HISTORY. Please Mrs. Jones, do not leave us like this.
Thank you for your review.
5 stars!!!
My rating scale:
5☆ - I loved this book and it brought out true emotion in me (laughter, anger, a good cry, etc)
4☆ - I loved this book.
3☆ - I liked this book.
2☆ - I didn't really care for this book.
1☆ - I did not like this book at all and probably did not finish it.
Summoned to Thirteenth Grave was a long awaited installment. I was torn between wanting to gobble it up or read it slowly and savor every moment. That was answered when I got wrapped up in the story and flipped through the pages like I always do a Charley Davidson novel.
We always get our overall adventure, but get treated with little mini adventures. I loved that despite how enormous Charley & Reyes’s job was in this book, they still took the time to help out a little boy and his family.
Summoned to Thirteenth Grave read as most of the series books did. Then surprises kept popping up. Big surprises that blew me away. One after another I was stunned by the revelations. Charley didn’t let on anything as the story goes on.
I enjoyed the ride of our final installment, until we started to wound down to the end. The revelations were startling, and were coming one after another, then it was time for the final showdown. There seemed to be a lot of prep for how quickly Charley and Reyes were able to accomplish their goal. It left me a bit dissatisfied. The world was saved but the consequences and rewards had to be paid. This was where I started to get irritated.
I had a loosely plotted ending to this series. The way I wanted to see the characters end up. This was nowhere close. I was terribly disappointed in how our favorite couple were left. The choice they made for the remainder of their time on earth. I don’t know how permanent this is, or if things will change for them when Beep’s series starts. This was a very unexpected ending, and after a lot of thought, all I can say is that I’m really disappointed. I feel dissatisfied.
It is sad to see the end of this series, but hopefully it is just a lead in for Beep. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll finally get the satisfaction I need from this in her series. I enjoyed the ride, the adventure was a lot of fun. I hate ending this on a disappointing note, but I have hope that my excitement will be rekindled.
Four and a half stars: A fitting ending to a favorite series.
Charley is in exile for eternity. It has been a hundred years since she saw the faces of those she loved, and she is certain that her friends are likely deceased. Then a miracle happens, Charley finds herself back on earth in with Reyes. Only a short amount of time has passed, but in that time a hell dimension opened up in New Mexico and it is up to Charley and Reyes to fix it before it destroys the world. In order to do that, Charley must solve a few mysteries such as what happened to her mother? Will Charley be able to save the world and her friends?
What I Liked:
*After thirteen books in the Charley Davidson Series, I probably have run out of things to say about this delightful series, so I am going to keep this review brief. This is the final book in this series and it was wonderful. I loved all the surprises, catching up with all the characters and learning some earth shattering information. This one didn’t disappoint. Once again, if you haven’t read this series, what is wrong with you?
*I was flabbergasted at the startling secrets that came forth in this one. There were some totally jaw dropping moments regarding many of the characters. I gasped in surprise a time or two. Darynda really threw out some punches with this one, and I loved all the surprises. I wouldn’t have guessed some of them in a million years!
*I adore the characters in this series. I have loved watching them grow and evolve. This book revisited all of the favorites, and many of them revealed some new information. I couldn’t get enough of the gang. I am going to miss these characters.
*This one has lots of action, romance, danger and all that you love in a Charley book. You won’t be bored.
*The ending was interesting to say the last. I wish I could say more, but I won’t. Most of the questions are answered, it stops in a good spot, but it left me eager for the spin off series. I really hated to say goodbye!
And The Not So Much:
*I am not going to lie, I felt this one got a little scattered and messy. There was so much going on and so many revelations that it didn’t read neatly.
*The secondary mystery featuring a ghost boy looking to reunite with his mother and sister felt thrown in there. Then when that story line culminates it isn’t finished off, I was left wondering about why the boy and his mother ended up where they did. This part of the story missed the mark.
*There has been all this buildup over the last few books about Beep saving the world and an impending war. That is left unfinished to be continued in the next series, which is a disappointment considering all the time invested in that story line, still I have something to look forward to.
Summoned To Thirteenth Grave is a fitting end to a fantastic series. I loved the journey, the characters, the story and all the laughs. Big props to Darynda Jones for creating such enjoyable characters. Even though I am remiss to say goodbye, I am eager to see what happens in the next series. If you are looking for an entertaining UF series, this is one to read!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for this review.
