Thanks to Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group for a digital ARC of this book.
4.5 rounded up to 5 stars.
This was a great read for me. The plot follows a group of friends, bouncing back and forth between the present and the past--a seemingly typical night of teen partying 30 years ago. Someone died that night in the 1980s and someone knows the truth.
I found this to be a great page-turner. While some reviewers said they figured out the killer early on, I thought the author did a great job of making everyone look guilty and, if I did fixate on the right friend for a period of time, I second guessed myself, thinking it might be a red herring. There is also a detective I assume will be back in further entries of what is to be a series. He has some appeal for me as well--there is something (or things) in his background that I think still need to be fleshed out, and this will give the author plenty of room for development as the series continues. All in all, I found this to be a character-driven novel as much as a plot-driven one.
A well-written and executed mystery novel that doesn't get you bogged down in the police procedural. Highly recommend.
I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.
Wow, this was a thrill ride from the first page till the end, I was on the edge of my seat. Loved it.
A masterful delight! I am in awe at Ms. Lodge's character development and suspenseful storyline. There is so much detail and so many different paths of lies and deceit that I felt as if I was one of the detectives on the case. (Actually, we find out that there is more than one case!)
7 teenage boys and girls go camping - only 6 return. The youngest, Aurora,14, goes missing. 30 years later, her skeleton is unearthed. (Along with a beer can testing positive for dexamphetamine). A lot of information has been lost or deemed unusable at the crime scene due to the 30 year interval. Did Aurora overdose? Was she killed? Or? Jonah is the main detective on this case - as a DCI he has three direct reports who all amplify his superb knowledge and experience. Unfortunately, Jonah knows a few of the campers because he was close in age to them and they all grew up in the area.
The case goes back and forth from each "suspect" (who was a camper with Aurora that night). Other suspects; an English teacher; drug dealers and family all come into play. .
Originally, the 30 year old case was overlooked by cadaver/drug-sniffing dogs. How can that be? How was it that it has been so long since Aurora's disappearance to having a little girl randomly find a bone in the woods?
As the characters are twisted around (they do use the fact that it was a long time ago to their advantage) they play on each other. Even after meeting with each other (to spread the blame out so there is only reasonable doubt?) the reader remains puzzled. Many times your mind changes back and forth as to who the perpetrator might be.
Suspicion ramps up throughout the entire book. But, this read does not disappoint ! One of the most thought-provoking books I have read this year! A MUST READ!!!
Many thanks to Random House Publishing Group - Random House and NetGalley for a great suspense story!
Trying to clear up a murder 30 years after the fact.
The same policemen that got involved in the missing girl investigation as a young cop dealing with a bunch of teenagers now tries the solve the murder case when the body is found. Instead of dealing with six teenagers he is now having to deal with the adult version 30 years later. On top of it he has some of his own memories that he is afraid will come to light. The author gave a very good character study both on the teenagers and the adults. How the original event has shaped their lives over the years. Both time lines are told as in present time so you get the feel of the teenagers including the murder victim as they were (in a lot of ways typical teenagers, maybe we can see a bit of ourselves at that time of our lives). The story is very believable with a lot of twist and turns. I hope to be able to read more about Jonah Sheens and his police force department in the future.
Thank you Random House Publishing Group and Netgalley for the ARC.
I loved this book! It drew me in and I read it in about a day and half. Probably would have been quicker if I didn't have things to do around the house.....
Definitely kept me guessing on how it would turn out. Each chapter, I think I changed my mind.
Cannot wait for more from this author.
Check it out....
A group of teens spends a night in the woods drinking and partying. The plot of this book shifts from this event to the current day, when 30 years later a police investigation is reopened when the murder of one of them is reopened and her remains are discovered. We get to know the investigating team and the now adults in deep detail, and the finely drawn characters are quite evocative and intriguing: several have married and all have become established members of society, yet there is something wrong with this picture and the shadow of their friend's death haunts everyone in different ways. It is an intriguing notion and well executed.
Six school friends go on a camping trip and after a night of partying, one is missing in the morning; the discovery of her body thirty years later reopens a cold case investigated by a former classmate who envied the group from afar in a gripping thriller for readers of The Woman in Cabin 10 and the Lynley series.
One night during the scorching summer of 1983, a group of teenagers go camping in the forest. The evening starts like any other--they drink, they dance, they fight, they kiss. Some of them slip off into the woods in pairs, others are left jealous and heartbroken. But in the morning, the youngest in the group, Aurora, has disappeared. Her friends claim that she was safe the last time they saw her, right before she went to sleep. An exhaustive investigation is launched but no trace of the teenager is found. The search is eventually called off.
Thirty years later Aurora's body is unearthed and Jonah Sheens is the detective put in charge of solving the long-cold case. Back in 1983, he had played a part in the search as a young cop, and their small-town community meant he had known the teenagers--including Aurora--personally. Now, he's determined to finally get to the truth of what happened that night. His investigation brings the members of the camping party back to the forest, where they will be confronted once again with the events of that night--events that left one of them dead, and all of them profoundly and forever changed
my thoughts
wow just wow , i was up all night read it , just couldn't stop had to know what happened next.. And it didn'tlet me down ,not once , i can see why it might not be everyones pick or like but i loved it loved the story , loved how i was pulled into the story , loved how it kept me questioning everything i thought knew about what happened to Aurora,With that said i want to say thinks to Netgalley for letting me read it and review it can't wait for the next book in this series.
It took me quite awhile to finish this book, although that was not the fault of the book itself. I was immediately intrigued by the plot, and in times when I wasn’t able to read as much as I wanted, I found myself constantly thinking over the events of the book and puzzling over the characters. The author did a masterful job of provoking distrust of certain characters, while keeping the guilty party safe from suspicion. I read many thrillers and found this one to be unique and exciting up until the very end.
This book will grip you from the start and you'll have to keep reading in order to find out what happened! I both loved and hated this book because it was so hard to put down that when I had to, I kept thinking about how it was going to end and I couldn't wait to get back to it!
Holy Flashbacks, Batman!
Seriously, there are a lot of flashbacks here. I did my best in reading them, simply because they tended to be where most of our clues were. But I admit I got tired of them.
We do have a solid mystery here as we try to find out what happened to a young girl many years ago. There are quite a few suspects, but you’ll find that our *who* is pretty obvious from the start.
I did keep reading, mainly to see if I was right. I just wished the author had found a slightly different way to tell the story.

She Lies In Wait is a who done it story that keeps you guessing. I wanted to keep reading as much as I could at a time. someone in a camping group killed this young girl and reading about who she was and how she died is so heartbreaking. Even after finishing the book I feel angry and sorrow at the loss.
3.5/5 Overall, I enjoyed this novel, but I think it could have been punched up a little bit more. It read like a standard police procedural, which was fine, but I think with a little bit more plot and character development and some unexpected twists it could have been a lot better.
Great storyline. Lots of twists and turns. Got confused at one point so had to go back and read it but overall grear
The story was good. Well written with an air of mystery and angst as well. I think the characters were well developed and the story flowed very well. One doe st think of murder, lies and secrets within a group of teenage girls. I would read more from this author.
My review has been posted directly to goodreads. Please refer to the link below to see my review of this book on goodreads.com.
This was a good read. Although I did enjoy it, I couldn’t help feeling I’ve read it before. The storyline was much to familiar from many other books. I do recommend it, but not a stand out., stay with me kind of book. Thank you for the opportunity to read.
Interesting novel but def not a thriller--more of police procedural that tells the story of a 14 year old girl who had disappeared 30 years ago from the present day when her body is found. The chapters alternate between the present police investigation which is underway and the camp out in the woods of 7 teens thirty years prior when Aurora disappeared. There are many twists to the story. This book reminded me SO much of Final Girls and The Last Time I Lied both by Riley Sager, both of which followed the same type of thriller/murder in the past type of stories, that I had a hard time NOT comparing them. The story moves slowly as Det. Jonah Sheens attempts to piece together the events of Aurora's last night alive last seen with her sister and her sister's friends all partying out in the woods. I was not that crazy about any of the characters, all having little background info or depth, plus the alternating timelines made it hard for me to keep all the characters straight. I also figured out the story well before the ending so the suspense part was not there for me either. There have been many similar plot lines in books that I have recently read, so I was disappointed over all. Just not the book for me.
Very interesting book that kept me guessing the entire time... I much liked the interaction between all of the characters, present and past. Looking forward to reading more books in this series!
She lies in wait was a good easy read, like a beach or sick day read. A good debut novel, I look forward to watching Gytha Lodge grow as a writer!
I was very disappointed in this book. The plot was easy to figure out by 25% mark. The writing style was really good but the plot was lacking. Not very enjoyable on the whole.
