Mackenzie is in love with her best friend, Hunter but he doesn’t seem to return her feelings and is marrying someone else. So she walks away from his life. Of course she also has a health issue that cements the decision for her.
3 years later Hunter is divorced and back in her life. And soon they are back to being a lot more than just beat friends.
Promise me you is a beautiful heartwarming read that left me with dewy eyes. It is an intense read that packs an emotional punch. I loved Mackenzie and Hunter, they are such intense and strong characters that you can’t help but love them. A fantastic read that leaves you with hope and appreciation for all things.
I have a short list of authors who no matter what they publish I pick their books up without even having to read the blurb because they are just that good. Marina Adair is on that list and Promise Me You didn't disappoint.
My heart broke for Mackenzie having to watch the guy she loved go marry someone else and then to have to face the trials life throws at her on top of that to boot. I don't want to spoil what happens to her but I really admire her strength and that she still goes on to have a very successful career. I do have to admit I had a harder time with Hunter's character and he was the main reason I gave this one a 4 instead of 5 stars. His character is portrayed as pretty self-centered and even after his divorce and his meeting Mackenzie once again I felt like he didn't have much character growth. While you can't deny he loved Mackenzie I felt like often his own desires and needs came first to him even if it was couched in terms of him wanting to help Mackenzie. Despite that I did enjoy watching the journey of Mackenzie and Hunter getting to know each other again. Marina Adair just has a way of tugging at your heartstrings and falling in love with the community she builds.
Promise Me You by Marina Adair was an enjoyable book that had just the right mix of romance that was both heartfelt and sweet and sexy. It was a well written developed story that flowed smoothly and was hard to put down. The main characters were Hunter and Mackenzie and their story was not a smooth easy road. They started years ago as friends, lost touch, faced challenges, and then met up again years later. They faced many obstacles that they worked through, but the hard road was worth the struggle as they found each other and welcomed sharing their life together. A very good story that I highly recommend.
I am such a sucker for second chance romances. It is like my catnip. I also love Marina Adair's work so I was excited to get my hands on this ARC.
Mackenzie and Hunter have been friends for several years, writing hit songs for his band. Mackenzie has struggled with her feelings for Hunter and decides it is time to step away when he gets married. Hunter has no idea what he did wrong to end their friendship. He searches for her but she disappeared without a trace.
Three years later they are thrown back together by Mackenzie's manager. They start a tenuous friendship while working on his new album. Mackenzie is learning how to deal with major changes in her life and Hunter, now divorced, wants to be there for her in a way he couldn't before.
This was a beautiful story and my heart ached for Mackenzie's struggles. I could feel her pain and uncertainty but I kept cheering her on for trying to rise above her issues. I had a bit of a hard time believing that Hunter was in it for the long haul. The first half of the book made me question his motives but the last half showed his true character.
I really did enjoy this book and I was very interested in the way the author portrayed Mackenzie's new life. I know I will read more of Ms. Adair's books because they are always a solid comfort read.
**3.5-4 stars** It’s always a wonderful treat to read a book by Marina Adair! Her books always draw me right into the story and Promise Me You did just that.
Mackenzie Hart has been in love with Singer/Song Writer Hunter Kane for years. As his writing partner and best friend, the music they write together top the charts. Problem is they’ve always been in the friend zone and Hunter would never cross that line. When Hunter ends up marrying another woman, Mackenzie can’t bear the pain and skips town right before the “I do’s” She’s determined to make a life for herself and her song writing, even if it’s without Hunter in her life. When something major happens in Mackenzie’s life that alters her life forever, she hides away even more from her former life.
Hunter Kane has never gotten over his best friend being out of his life. Its 3 years later and he’s now divorced and struggling to find/write the right music for his band’s newest album. He’s desperate to reconnect with Mackenzie. He never allowed himself to cross the line with her in the past, but that’s all about to change. Reconnecting with her changes everything for him.
It’s not going to be an easy road for these two. There are many obstacles they will have to work through, but it’s worth it when you know you’ve found the one you were meant to be with.
Sweet, Sexy, Heartfelt and Emotional, Promise Me You had it all.
I have read several books my Mrs Adair and this one was different to me than her other series. I would say this book was serious compared to her other books. Hunter and Mackenzie’s story is one of friends that worked together becoming lovers.
This book starts with Mackenzie attending Hunters rehearsal dinner. Hunter is the lead singer of a band and Mackenzie is the song writer. Mackenzie is also in love with Hunter and he is marrying his girlfriend. Mackenzie is also dealing with the fact that she inherited her mothers rare eye condition that will make her loose her eye sight. Hunter questions Mackenzie as to what is wrong with her and she want so badly to tell him she is in love with him and about her eye sight. However it’s the night before his wedding so she doesn’t and she leaves.
Three years later Hunter is divorced and hasn’t spoken or seen Mackenzie since the night before his wedding. Mackenzie has been MIA and Hunters band is about to tank. Hunter believes if can meet the mysterious new song writer named Mack and Mutley he can change things.
This was a sweet book of Mac over coming her disabilityand Hunter realizing what he had the entire time. This is a dual POV with a lot of heart.
I received an advanced copy for an honest review.
I am a Marina Adair fan, so I was excited to read Promise Me You, and I wasn't disappointed!
This is the story of MacKenzie and Hunter. They co-write songs. Songs that Hunter sings and songs that have made him a pop megastar. MacKenzie loves him secretly from the beginning but she is only 19 years old and Hunter friend zones her because of that. Hunter falls in love and marries another. This is too much for MacKenzie, so she disappears from his life. Three years later, his career struggling and his marriage over, he reconnects with MacKenzie, but something tragic has happened in her life making it impossible to have a relationship with Hunter. The ensuing struggles make for a wonderful story with all the feels. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to Marina's next one.
3.5 stars - Promise Me You is a second-chance friends to lovers romance. Mackenzie and Hunter had some great chemistry making music together. I was heartbroken with Mackenzie’s situation and I felt her struggle. At the beginning, I wasn’t convinced Hunter’s romantic feelings for Mackenzie. There was no indication of him treating her more than friends in the past, I’m not sure how romantic feelings would pop up after 3 years apart. I was so grateful that they both learned to love each other by listening to each other rather than by what they think it's the best for the other person. Overall, I liked and enjoyed this entertaining read.
MacKenzie is a song writer and has been in love with Hunter since she met him. Hunter is a singer/songwriter and lead of the Hunter Kane Band. Before she gets to tell Hunter her feelings, he’s getting married. Now three years later, divorced and in a slump, Hunter tries to get Mackenzie back. But when they lives start going in different directions, can they compromise and live happily ever after?
Great story. Steamy. A little bit of a tear jerker. Second chance at love and best friends fall in love.

3.5/5. My first time trying out this author, and it's not a bad one. Heroine, in love with hero but friend-zoned as they wrote beautiful award-winning music together, he being the front man of a band and she a highly talented composer and lyricist. Mackenzie left the day before Hunter's wedding and reappears 3 years later. He is now a divorced man with his band struggling to get itself out of it's current slump after tasting sweet success previously when they had preferential access to Mackenzie's songs. She in the meantime has succumbed to the same hereditary blindness as her mother did and is very hesitantly negotiating the challenging and fearsome waters brought about by her visual impairment.
The writing was quite nice and the characters quite likeable. There were a few holes in the story, but overall, a very pleasant read.
I had an epiphany while reading Promise Me You. A lot of authors do their best to make a story sexy, when I really wish they’d just stick to telling a story first. I’m all for the sexy parts, but first and foremost I want good storytelling. And this book could have been so much better if there was more to the plot and less about pecs...if there was more discussing heartfelt emotions instead of hardening nipples and, uhm, other things.
Anyway…
Mackenzie and Hunter met when Mac was hired to work in Hunter’s Uncle’s bar. When Hunter, an up-and-coming musician, discovers she’s a talented musician and songwriter, they begin collaborating and end up with a number one song. Mackenzie had strong feelings for Hunter though, ones that weren’t returned. And when the book opens, Mackenzie is ditching out early from the rehearsal dinner for Hunter’s wedding. She’s heartbroken that Hunter is marrying someone else, and Hunter seems oblivious to her feelings.
Fast forward three years, and Hunter is now divorced, and hasn’t heard from Mac since his rehearsal dinner. She completely disappeared on him.
And here is where I had the first of many issues with this book. It didn’t appear that Hunter gave all that much thought to Mackenzie once she was gone. He’s a famous musician - if he’d wanted to find her, he had the means to do so. Also, he may have had some stronger feelings for Mackenzie at one point, but didn’t act on them - first because she was young and a lot younger than him, and then because she was dealing with a health issue with her mother that completely consumed her life. But instead of waiting those issues out, he decides to marry someone else??? That’s not very hero-like behavior.
For Mackenzie’s part, I actually didn’t have any issue with her reasoning for disappearing. She had recently learned the health issue her mother had was hereditary, and that she too would succumb to the disease. It would cause a complete change of her life - one that was not compatible with life on the road. Rather than risk Hunter sacrificing his career (and that of his band’s), and with Hunter marrying someone else, she decided to start fresh and learn to live on her own two feet. The first several chapters of this book were SO good and I was looking forward to seeing how things would play out.
But then Mac and Hunter are reunited. And instead of talking about their thoughts and feelings, all we read about is their chemistry. Don’t get me wrong. Chemistry is great. But this could have been such a heartfelt and compelling story, but all we got was heavy breathing and hot touches.
After reading this whole book, I have so many more questions than I have answers. We never learn anything about Hunter and the girl he married - not why they married, not why they divorced. Mackenzie never expresses to Hunter how hurt she was when he asked another woman to marry him, nor does Hunter acknowledge that his actions hurt her. Did he even know Mackenzie loved him? At what point did Hunter decide Mackenzie was the one he was meant to be with, and why? And finally, the big, HUGE missed opportunity here...Mackenzie states she knows Hunter would be a great dad (not sure how she knows this since this is just one of the many things we as readers are told instead of shown), but because of her genetics and the potential for her to pass on this life-altering disease to her children, anyone she gets involved with would need to have lengthy and serious discussions about their future family. This could have been a great, angsty situation for them to deal with. And there’s nothing.
So, I started out with great expectations for this book, and things just went downhill fast. I wanted so much more from this story - more plot development, more character development - and it failed to deliver. But the good thing about being disappointed about a book, is that tomorrow is a new day, and the chance for a better story is just a page away.

Loved this book! Hunter and McKenzies story warmed my heart. I really like McKenzie in the other books and insight to her in this book made me like her even more. Friends to lover romances can be tricky but this one flowed easily and touches the heart exceptionally!
Thanks to Marina Adair & Netgalley for this advanced copy. I really enjoyed this book. It gave me a lot to think about. What if I could see and then lost my eyesight? I was a cute love story between Mackenzie & Hunter. Another fun book by Marina Adair. She doesn’t disappoint.
Definitely not,one of my favorites. I felt like there was way too much leading up to Hunter and Machenzie reconnecting. And I didn't feel their relationship. Maybe the problem was that I didn't really connect to either character. I found both of them to be off putting. The sex scene left me cringing. Who refers to breasts as cupcakes? Repeatedly? Regardless, this book did not work for me.
This looked like a book that should have been a "sure thing" for me. So much about it - the second chance, the "wounded" characters, and the set-up that seemed like it would deliver a deeply emotional story seemed like it was going to be a complete knock-out for me.
But...I couldn't connect with it. I felt like there was a lot of exposition. A lot of information that didn't necessarily move the love story forward. And I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about either the heroine or the hero. I found myself skimming and eventually decided that the storytelling here just didn't work for me. I'm so disappointed, but so thankful for the opportunity to check it out! Ultimately, a DNF for me at 30%.
When a book starts with the male lead marrying another women, I kinda know, this is not really a book for me. I am a happy and one women man kinda girl. That being said, it was an ok read for me. Just wished the plot was a little different.
You know a book is going to be good when you're crying at the end of the first chapter! Mack was resilient but too hard on herself for retreating into her safe zone. Hunter was amazing, as soon as he figured it out! Brody and the rest of the secondary characters were awesome! Can't wait to see if there will be more stories...
3.5 stars
I’ve been a fan of Marina’s books for a while and I was absolutely here for a second chance, BFF to more type of story.
I liked Mackenzie and Hunter well enough. They’re both stubborn and loyal, but genuinely good people who always want the best for those they care about. Brody was probably the best part of the story. I love how he handled things and was supportive, even if it meant giving someone a kick in the ass.
Plot wise it was okay. The slice of time felt forced and because everything was either focused on Hunter’s songs or Mackenzie’s situation {no spoilers}, I didn’t see their relationship grow. The actual conversations felt few and far between and for me, the chemistry was all tell, not show. And I did struggle a bit on believing Hunter wanted anything more than a record from her.
Overall, it was interesting enough to keep me reading and I did like this cast of cousins. I’m definitely interested in more books if this becomes a series.
**Huge thanks to Montlake for providing the arc free of charge**
3.5 stars. Solid second chance story from an author I really like.
Mackenzie has harbored feelings for her best friend and writing partner, Hunter, for a long time but they fell into the friend zone. Three years ago she decided to walk away from Hunter in order to save them from what she assumed would be a lifetime of heartbreak. Brought back together in order to write a new song together, Hunter and Mack realize that those feeling they pushed down aren't so easy to hide anymore. I don't want to spoil any of the plot by giving away big details but it's a story about overcoming physical limitations, connecting with others, and two people realizing they are it for each other. It is a good read. I felt there were a few plot holes and sometimes the characters didn't resinate with me. Which is the reason for my 3.5 stars. Overall I think it is a good story with a strong message.
I've read several of Marina Adair's books and am always impressed by her style and writing. This book is no exception. It is well written and the characters were relatable. I will say that was not one of my favorite books from this author but I will still continue to purchase her books in the future.
I received a copy of this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions here are 100% my own.
A friends with hopes of more. Mackenzie is one of the strongest female leads I've read in awhile. She has had a thing for her best friend Hunter for years and it takes a strong person to walk away like she did. Mackenzie is very independent and some what stubborn. I love how she takes what could be a greatest challenge in life and does not let it stop her from living her dream even if she is in somewhat of hiding. Hunter has done nothing but think of his friend since she left even as he is recovering from a failed marriage. You can't help but love Hunters determination when it comes to Mackenzie. He doesn't see what she has gone through as a game changer at all. If anything you will love how he tries everything he could think of to show her how they can work. I love them together. This is an amazing read.
