A good book and easy to follow with a lot of clear instructions. Even a beginner will learn a lot from it, but it is also great for any mixed media artist looking to expand their skills into watercolors.
The fact that no drawing is required was a huge boost for me. This helped me get more artistic without drawing and then critiquing it. I would highly recommend.
I enjoyed this adventurous look at watercolour painting. I've always dabbled in watercolours but am most at home with acrylics and oils. This book had a fresh approach, and including mixed media techniques made the practice much more lively than my usual hesitant dainty watercolour painting. It's good to loosen up and learn new techniques, and this book is great for those like me who have always thought watercolour involves drawing skills (which we don't all have!) - not here, it's more about colour and form, and experimenting. You might not have all the mixed media supplies listed, I know I certainly didn't, but if you haveat least a modicum of painting experience then you will learn something new.
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy.
I really enjoyed this book. Watercolor is my favorite medium and not being a trained artist, one that I frequently find intimidating! This book gives me the courage (and dare I say hope) to try watercolor once again. I loved the projects and look forward to trying them. Thanks for the read!
I loved this book. I especially liked the coverage of colour theory which is something I find my fibre art students struggle with the most. The step-by-step project really make you want to have a go. A tremendous resource and something i shall return to again and again.
I loved reading this fun book. The pictures are beautiful. I also enjoyed the nice quotes that enhanced the watercolors. Gina introduces many different watercolor and mixed media techniques. The step by step instructions are easy to follow. In addition to the main projects, there are lots of extra examples to see how each technique can be applied to different paintings.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book by artist @ginaleekim . I’m new to mixed media and use mostly watercolors, so this book is a great fit for me. Her instructions are clear and easy to follow with no drawing required. The final projects are not too daunting to try for beginners, but also offer new ideas to the more seasoned artists. .
She includes basic info about supplies, color theory, etc. She covers each color/color group with helpful notes and tips, then shows how the reader can put those into practice in the step by step project that follows.

I love that her art is inspired by nature. It’s light and happy. I also like that it’s not too busy and messy, as most mixed media artworks are. This is a book that I will go back to often for ideas and inspiration. Thank you to the publisher and #netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. #fastandfunwatercolor #ninabookreview
Because this book touts watercolor projects that don’t require drawing skills, I’d see this as a beginners book.
But having read it, I do feel like it might be a little much for beginners.
It reads partially like how to watercolor mixing with craftiness. I think if you’re just starting out with watercolors, adding different mediums and tools may confuse you and frustrate you more than if you just started and then graduated to a book like this. For example, I clicked on a random project, the supplies list: watercolors, watercolor paper, brushes, crayons, light pink oil pastel stick, palette knife, craft sheet, Golden crackle paste, walnut ink, Kurtake Zig 2 way glue pen (or any foil glue), light green foil sheet, Tonic Studios Nuvo gilding flakes (gold), Faber-Castell neon gel crayon (pink, optional), xtra fine Sharpie water-based paint marker (black). So do I think someone who doesn’t draw and wants to try some watercolor projects have all of that? Maybe if they’re crafty. And maybe they won’t buying the extra tools that you wouldn’t usually need when starting out in watercolors. Or maybe they’ll be overwhelmed.
Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a nice book, with good projects. I am just a bit confused about who they’re targeting with it. Is it a beginner book? Because I am a bit overwhelmed by all of the extra and have used watercolors before. If you’re beyond a beginner and maybe just don’t find drawing easy and have some other mediums and supplies laying around? I think you’re who would most benefit from this book and who will like it the most.
This is a great book for anyone wanting to explore or start out with watercolour. To me watercolour means a special skill with paper, water and colour - this book breaks down the barriers, and also adds new dimensions to painting with watercolour.
The book is broken up into two parts taking in materials, colour and painting method and more in part one, and artistic journey in part two.
I love the fact that this book incorporates watercolour with other mediums such as glue, oil crayons, mixed media elements, and the development of colour and effect in the works.
I really like this book and I am itching to get started on my journey into watercolour.
This is more than an art book, it is inspirational and uplifting, and a joy to browse through. I loved looking at the book, especially the multitude of pictures with quotes added to them. I probably wouldn't have a go at most of the projects as they were not really my style, but I absolutely loved looking at them. They gave me ideas for lots of other things. The whole book is bursting with colour and happiness. Overall a brilliant book full of inspiration and I loved the way the author added all the background information about vision boards and other positive self help methods she incorporated into her life. A book I would definitely keep on my coffee table. Thank You
this book, like other ones I have seen is under 150 pages so it can easily be quickly read through. She does use her own work as examples of things to do. The projects do involve mixed media into the painting. For me, it is not the top book for me. For some it is the book for them. She goes for colour based section to talk about painting - in the projects. There is information in it and the projects can be helpful.
Fast and Fun Watercolor is an art book about combining watercolor with mixed media elements. There are complete step by step guides with accompanying photos. The art projects themselves appear to be quite achievable. They also seem to elicit a sense of positivity and happiness, especially with the use of various colorful schemes. I think anyone who tries these fun projects will sense that as well.
This is the type of book that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
GN This was an excellent how-to-do book on watercolor, for the novice or experienced alike. Many hints and tips, as well as refreshing the basics. This is a book I will gift to my gifted nieces and nephews for Christmas this year. Thank you for sharing!
I received a free electronic copy of this excellent book on watercolor from Netgalley, Gina Lee Kim, and North Light Books in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.
This book is BIG and refreshing. I love Kim's art style and composition. Great tips, something new, even for advanced watercolor artists. This would make a great gift item for teens and older.
Visually appealing and full of ideas for projects based on watercolour with mixed-media, this beautiful book has an emphasis on colour rather than line, so is great for those who prefer painting to drawing.
Gina firstly guides us through her suggested art materials. Next is an interesting section on colour theory, including a useful pigment chart. She then talks about her own artistic practice, suggesting how to organise a calming working space and what to do if you get stuck for ideas. I thought the mindfulness headers in this section a bit baffling, until I read the accompanying text and understood Gina's thoughts behind them. Philosophical quotes from Mother Teresa to Matisse are included in many of Gina's paintings, giving them added spirituality.
The main part of the book is playtime; a series of 12 colourful, step-by-step projects based on the colour wheel that really make you want to have a go. Each project is followed by images of Gina's paintings in similar hues. Materials old and new, from liquid ceramic resist and clear tar gel to crackle paste and Neocolor crayons, are combined with stunning results.
Great for any artist looking for inspiration or unsure of how to use gels, pastes, watercolour pencils and crayons in paintings or art journals. May also interest people wanting a change from therapeutic adult colouring books to something more challenging, without having to worry about accurate drawing skills. A book to get your creative juices flowing!
The title of this book perfectly describes it! Fast and fun watercolor is exactly what this book has to offer. Author Gina Lee Kim does a superb job presenting creativity tips and color interpretation tips to create gorgeous water colors. It was a perfect guide for my nine-year-old who enjoys learning to paint to create beautiful hues and texture with minimum drawing required. The five-step no-drawing painting method was exactly what we were looking for!
I have always loved watercolor, but have never jumped in to give it a try. This book makes the art form much more approachable. Here we get an introduction to the tools needed, a lesson on color theory and a plethora of tips throughout. The lessons cover a range of techniques, utilizing mixed media to varying degrees. We also see a nice selection of the author's other watercolor and mixed media artwork, giving the reader inspiration for their next steps.
Thank you to NetGalley and F+W Media/North Light Books for the opportunity to read and review this beautiful book! All comments are my own, unbiased opinion.
