Yikes! When I started to read this book, I honestly had no idea that it was based on the actual happenings in a home lived in by the author. That being said....after the first few things that happened to the author, I would have left as fast as I could and never looked back. This book is written with details of Davies life inside a haunted home. It also recounts the stories of two previous tenets as well. Obviously, the other two give credence to his story. The evil in that home was beyond anything that my mind could comprehend. I did not really believe in the paranormal much but I will say that after reading three accounts by different people who stayed at different time frames certainly Has me questioning my beliefs. The author does an amazing job at giving details as well as time sequencing. I believed everything he wrote mainly because he seemed so honest but also because there were others who witnessed the evil. If you want to read a great scary “true” story, this is one you will want to read.
Thank you to netgalley as well as the author/publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
A gripping, no nonsense account of activity experienced by a young couple. Compelling reading that had me hooked from start to finish. Read in one sitting.
Thanks to Netgalley and GL Davies for the e book copy.
I don’t know if I can put my finger on why this book wasn’t for me. I love a good haunted house story. I love creep. However, something just felt disjointed.
Unfortunately I read this book a while ago and seem to have missed it when writing reviews. - sadly I cant remember enough detail to give a full review.
However, thanks to NetGalley for the ARC :-)
Imagine. You and your partner have just bought your first house together, you move in excited for your future life ahead with all the hopes and dreams that all young couples have at the beginning of their relationship. The dream of a happy family life, maybe a kitten or a puppy too and loving, homely Christmas’s. Then imagine being terrified beyond anything you’ve ever comprehended. Scared to death twenty fours a day with no hope of ever escaping the pure hell that’s unleashing itself within your house. This is that story.
I’m a big fan of horror and ghost stories, I’ve been reading them since I was about eleven years old, so it takes something pretty horrific to creep me out. This creeped me out.
The writer has succeeded in writing a well researched, genuine story involving real people who experienced the horror firsthand. It is, in parts, unsettling and skin crawling but, in my opinion, one of the best factual haunting stories I’ve read.
Huge thanks to John Hunt Publishing Ltd, 6th Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fun read for the upcoming spooky season! The story follows a young couple and their life after they purchase what turns out to be a haunted house. This was a very gripping tale full of ghosts and scary moments!
Fab read. Could not put down. Highly recommended to all. Believable characters. Great author. Will be watching out for more titles.
I don't feel right giving this book a star rating as I DNF'd it at 13%. I was really looking forward to this as I LOVE a good, scary haunted house story, and the fact that this was based off the author's own experiences and that of those who also resided in the house made me even more excited. However, I found that I just could not get into it at all. The format was probably my biggest issue, it read more like an unedited screenplay than anything else. I found the interview part of it to be an interesting way to tell the story, but it also felt very disjointed and made the flow non-existent. I'm happy that I'm in the minority on this one as I feel that there are a lot of people out there who will sincerely enjoy it, it was not for me though.
Haunted Horror of Haverfordwest
G. L. Davies
Haunted Horror of Haverfordwest is a book about the haunting of a seemingly “normal” home located in Haverfordwest, Wales. The author also wrote A Most Haunted House, which was about his experience living in the Haverfordwest home.
The book confused me. The introduction, written by the author, describes how a home should be a refuge but that sometimes “the home will betray us.” He acknowledges that it is usually because of the people we love and trust, that the sanctuary is broken, but sometimes it is the house that “thrives on our misery” – with a destructive and malevolent force. Over the ten years after living in the house, alcoholism plagued him, and he suffered a nervous breakdown. He admits that some may think his experience in the house was merely a manifestation of his depression and personal demons.
The book switches into an interview-style narrative where the author discovers a couple who lived in the house before him, or more precisely, they found him – and he explores the events they experienced while living in the house. This part of the book was fascinating, and I wanted to discover everything that happened to this couple while living in the house. It was compelling – although some attention-grabbing parts were never explained or fully developed. At the beginning of Anne and Dai’s time in the house – Dai found what seemed to be a pet cemetery – lots of animal bones in the back yard with no valid explanation of why they were there. Even though it was creepy, it didn’t seem to find its place with the rest of the things that happened in the house.
Once you have heard the story from Anne and Dai’s perspective, the author attempts to offer various suggestions for the unexplainable things that happened. I don’t know whether the author believed or disbelieved the alleged happenings in the house – but the attempt to offer options took away from the storyline.
Could this have been a great horror story? Yes. If told from the first-person point of view, it would have been fantastic. Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, for Anne and Dai – the story was authentic. The author’s explanations and ponderings after the interview section completely took away the scary factor. For it to be a true story of a haunting – there were no credible, fact-based substantiations made – only generalizations. I think the book could have been so much better written as a novel, based on a true story, where the author could take liberties to substantiate storyline items and tie the random things together to make a terrifying story.
Blissful beginnings for a young couple turn into a nightmare after purchasing their dream home in Wales in 1989. Their love and their resolve are torn apart by an indescribable entity that pushes paranormal activity to the limit. Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest is the prequel to the bestselling A Most Haunted House.

I love a real life story! This is the combination of the original book and a new section based on the testimony of another couple that also lived in this house. The events are truly terrifying!
It is this part that I found quite disturbing and much more spooky - if even a small part of what they experienced is true then crikey! Given this forms the first half of the book, I was then slightly disappointed to read the original tale that the author himself experienced. That is not to diminish what he experienced, it was just the order for me was an anti-climax having not read the author's story before.
I liked the way that the author tried to explain what could be called the unexplainable - he is not simply asking us to believe without question, he tries to apply rational thought.
A good read for fans of real life ghosts stories.
Thank you to Netgalley for the advance copy.
I enjoyed this read to a certain extent as it is set in my home town, however the written format didn't agree with me well. The content was interesting but I just couldn't get fully into it and had to force my way through. Again this is just from personal preference as I can see others enjoying this read with little to no issues.
I would recommend this read for any avid ghost / haunting fan.
Anyone who is a fan of ghost stories based on real events is going to love this book. It’s not really a fictional narrative…more like interviews with actual previous residents of a haunted home in Wales. The second part is the actual story A Most Haunted House, which is sort of written as a fictional interview with 2 previous residents, but the author admitted later on that it was a true story he had lived through with names and details changed to keep it anonymous. The first part is an interview with a couple who contacted him later after realizing the story was about the house they had trouble with years ago. I liked the first part better, just because they lived in the house the longest and had so much more happen to them, although I can’t imagine going through what they did. The last section of the book is a collection of theories the author has researched on what could be causing what is happening at the house. I ended up reading most of this in a day, just unable to stop until I found out how they all got out of this terrible situation. Well worth the read.

Having not read A Most Haunted House, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this horror novel, I also didn’t realise it was non fiction.
I was surprisingly captivated by this story, enjoying the self conflicted way the author wrote, as though even now he was finding the horrors of this house to be natural rather than supernatural.
To me, everything rang true, it was unnerving in some places and opened my eyes to the possibility that there is more in this world than people choose to believe.
Interesting outlooks on the various natural explanations for the phenomena were refreshing but didn’t fit my idea of what was happening in the spooky dwelling, I will be reading the sequel to this story and find this subject enthralling.
So sorry for not reviewing this, I didn't realise it was a prequel! I won't be reading it as I can't get ahold of the first book!
Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest is honestly a difficult book to throw a rating on (especially a low rating –). When it comes to non-fiction, I typically rate it 3 or up — depending on my interest in the text. & another reason as to why it’s difficult to rate Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest is because I do not like to undermine what other people believe. When it comes to the paranormal, I am definitely not a skeptic. I love hearing about true haunts & love (also am terrified??) when experiencing my own paranormal occurrences.
With that being said, I had some issues with Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest.
Haunted: Horror of Haverfordwest is an account of a true haunt, with several people telling what happened to them during their stay in the house. A majority of the text is written in interview-format, which may give the account more credibility, but for some reason, fell completely flat for me. I understand why G.L. Davies kept it in this format — but, I just couldn’t get into it.
What happened to these couples in the house is absolutely terrifying, I will admit. The spirits who are possibly haunting this home aren’t the nicest bunch — that’s for damn sure. Yet, with the consistent, “people are probably laughing at us…” “what would you say to the skeptics?” & “people might not believe us” really does kind of.. well.. make me a skeptic.
There were multiple times where I would put the book down, and not even feel bad for not picking it back up quickly. Note: I started this book on December 9th, and didn’t finish it until December 26th.
I would like to say that I did enjoy G.L. Davies providing a list of theories as to what could have happened in the house, ranging from mold to psychological to psychedelics & to, of course, aliens. I felt like this was an episode of Buzzfeed: Unsolved. He really did put time and research into understanding the possible haunt, and for that, I say good job.
I’m not saying that this account of a haunt is fictional — it’s not my place to say if what these people experienced happened or not. It just didn’t read well, in my opinion. If you’re interest in true haunts, give it a try! It might work out better for you than it did for me! Plus, there are some pretty scary scenes in the interviews.
Deliciously Creepy!
This is an intensely scary book about a haunting which is said to be true events surrounding a young couple which makes the story even more frightening if you are a believer!
A young couple move into their first home in a very nice neighborhood and have hopes of raising a family in this house. The first day after they unpack and get settled, the husband cleans up the back yard which is quite an overgrown mess and he comes upon a few old animal bones, so he keeps digging and finds a mass grave of animal bones in horrible condition. Quite shaken up he tells his wife and they rationalize why the bones would be there. That same night the husband sees a huge shadow out where the bones were discovered. There was noone out there!
..The wife starts having horrible nightmares that feel real to her and they shake her to her core. This is only the beginning of the of the horrific events that will plague this young couple and test the strength of their marriage and their sanity.I
I found this book to be so well-written and extremely satisfying. I normally do not get frightened when reading but this book gave me goose bumps and had me looking over my shoulder hoping nothing was there.
I enjoyed the dialogue style that Mr. Davies used to tell the story, it made the fear and creep factor resonate with me that these people really experienced this all consuming living nightmare.
Mr. Davies also includes a short book at the end about another couple who lived in that house and you discover that twelve individuals or families resided and moved from that house in fifteen years. That information really makes one ponder about the true nature of this property. The author also gives great factual information at the end, about how science could prove or disprove many of the events that take place in a haunting.I
I Highly recommend this book to all horror and paranormal lovers and I can't wait to read more of G.L. Davies
books about other stories of hauntings. Whether these hauntings are truth or fiction (you can decide yourself), this was one seriously spooky book!😊
I have given this book 5 Spooky 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!!
I want to thank Netgally and the.publisher and G.L. Davies for writing this terrific paranormal book!
The story of a couple who buy a haunted house in Wales is a chilling and creepy book. you believe in the paranormal or not you can’t help but be gripped by this story.
The owner interviews other couples who had previously lived in the house and had similar experiences to himself. Their experiences stayed with me long after I read this book!! I definitely would have moved out ASAP after the first experience and you would have found me running down the road in my pjs to get away!!!
If you want a chilling ghost story, perfect for a winters night that will make you’re spine tingle then this is ideal. Best to not read before bed!!
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
Paranormal/Supernatural books have been a favourite of mine for a year or so now, anytime I see one on NetGalley I have to request it and hope I get approved. I've never seen a ghost or knowingly experienced anything supernatural or paranormal and it's something that interests me.
After the authors own experiences at Haverfordwest, when he felt mentally and emotionally prepared, he released a book about the house, A Most Haunted House, and was surprised when it was a hit, while he was doing publicity for said book he received an email from someone who described the house in detail and exactly where it was and then said some of what happened to her while she lived there.
They eventually met up, interviews were agreed upon as long as the names of the people involved were changed, this is their story.
Dai and Anne had moved into the house in 1989 and left in 1991, small things happened at first and then things built up enough over time that it detrimentally affected their emotional and mental state so much that they had to leave. It's terrifying to image living through what they did and for staying in that environment for 3 years!
I read the authors first book when I was part way through this so I could get the complete picture of both couples and their experiences were very similar, Dai and Annes was much worse though as they stayed there longer. The woman in the first book 'Sarah' is a horrid person, cold, emotionless and a heartless bitch, when you read it, you'll know why I think that and it's because it's true, the only reason I bring it up in this review is because in the copy I received the first book is included in the back.
At the very end of the book the author gives various explanations as to what could cause the experiences both couples had, environmental and paranormal/supernatural, which I found refreshing in a book such as this.
*Huge thanks to G.L. Davis, John Hunt Publishing Ltd, 6th Books and NetGalley for this copy which I chose to read and all opinions are my own*
Three and a half star rating.
An ordinary house in an ordinary street in Haverfordwest, Wales? Well it is until someone makes the mistake of moving in! This is a chiller of a story if true and chilling even if it’s not. No one dares to stay in it for any length of time before they are terrified and just have to get out. Extremely atmospheric and perfect for anyone who loves anything creepy or evil, so if you are frightened of your own shadow, better give this one a wide berth! Great read for dark, winter nights.
This is an author I've never read or heard of, but I absolutely loved the writing style. The horror genre is one of my favourites to read. The plot was suspenseful and unique. Not a big fan of the cover, but amazing nonetheless! :)
