Thanks for the early review copy!
I recommend this novel to fans of mystery fiction. It was a interesting thriller.
This was a fantastic read, slow to start with, although the prologue was enough to draw me in wanting to know more, but very soon you get a picture of what is happening, and not all is what it seems between Marianne and her husband Simon. There is a great twist as well.
Highly recommended, hope there are more from this author.
This is the first novel I have read by this author and I sincerely hope that she writes more in this genre. I could not put it down. I was drawn in from the first page.
Marianne is married to Simon, a successful surgeon. They have twin boys together and Simon’s daughter, Sophie, from his first marriage, also lives with them in a beautiful house, which is the envy of all around. There is nothing perfect about the present or the past.
Marianne becomes obsessed with Caroline, a work colleague of Simon’s, when he utters her name one morning. She has to find out if he is having an affair with her.
As the storyline progresses I was left wondering who was mad, who was sane and what was the real truth. I found the party scene was almost unbearable to read but amazingly clever and I picked up one or two of the twists as it progressed.
The ending was brilliant.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and Sue Watson for my ARC in return for my honest review.
Excellent, highly recommended.
5 Stars. I found Our Little Lies to be a mostly accurate portrayal of marriage to a narcissist. There were parts that had me in tears, and this was an extremely emotional read for me.
I am glad I gave this thriller a chance. The author doesn’t normally write books in genres that appeal to me, so I was nervous at the start. I’m glad she branched out into thrillers because she has quite the knack for it, and this one was good.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy of this ebook in exchange for an unbiased review.
Avid readers of psychological thrillers know that just because a family seems to be perfect it doesn't mean that everything is awesome. So it came as no surprise that Marianne's life has challenges that go beyond finding the perfect shade of paint or cooking lamb per Julia Child's recipes. What was surprising is that Ms. Watson is a rom-com author, which makes this dark novel very remarkable indeed. The plot is as far off from fluffy cake as it's possible to get. The nightmare that Marianne has to live through is unbearable but it also may be self-inflicted. Could it all be in her mind or is her perfect doctor hubby having an affair? I went from being positive that he was to thinking that maybe she was a looney who should not have access to sharp objects around her own children. What I didn't even consider was what ended up happening. The story kept me reading and invested in Marianne's plight. And the ending was so surprising that it left me breathless. I hope Ms. Watson keeps writing these darker books along with her lighter fare because she knows how to keep the pages turning.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/Bookouture!
A well written, if uncomfortable at times (understandably) book about relationships and how abuse can be subtle and build up over time so eventually it is not even recognised. I could see how this happened and became frustrated for Marianne - which I can see was a transference of her emotions even though she is a character in the book! I did see some of the twists coming apart from one right at the end which (without naming any spoilers) I found a bit hard to believe given what we had learnt about that character throughout the book. However, this did not detract from overall enjoyment of the book.
This book seemed a little slow at first, but it really picked up the pace the more I read. Marianne is married to a heart surgeon who is physically and psychologically abusive. She constantly thinks he is cheating on her. Is he, or is it all in her head. This book keeps you on your toes and you are constantly wondering what is really going on here. The ending is explosive and caught me completely by surprise. I never would have guessed it. This book is well written and the characters are extremely well developed and believable. I felt Marianne's pain and heartache. I felt her husband's rage. It is vividly descriptive and I was in that house watching things unfold. This is a book worth reading. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this book to provide my honest feedback.
I am a huge fan of this authors books. She writes the most fabulous stories and I know I am always guaranteed the best reading experience. When I saw that she had written a book outside of her usual genre and one of my favourite genres, well I was beyond excited. There is always that little niggle though at the back of your mind as to whether they can carry it off or not. Well shame on me for even having that little niggle as she well and truly nailed it!
This is very much a mix of dark domestic noir whilst also being a psychological thriller. Marianne I didn't envy at all. From the outside she looks like she has it all. On the inside though things are sadly very different. She is someone who just wants the best for her family. Nothing she does though seems to please her husband.
Simon, my dislike for him grew throughout the novel. Straight off you can see what he is. I felt sorry for Marianne and the children as they are just like some little trinkets, there for the purpose of being on show. He had me question if he actually loved anyone other than himself.
Our Little Lies drew me in and the further I got into it the harder it got for me to put it down. I had no clue as to what to expect with this being so unlike the authors other novels so just had to buckle up and see where she was going to take me. There is a gripping tension that builds and builds so that I ended up racing though the pages to see how things were going to end for Marianne. I kept thinking I knew where she was going only to be knocked side ways and eagerly reading more to so see what other shocks and surprises were in store for me. An absolute page turner of a read that sent my heart racing. Bravo to the new queen of psychological thrillers.
Wow, wow and wow, absolutely brilliant book, couldn't put it down and an excellent page turner.
Not read any from Sue Watson before but I hope she writes more psychological thrillers, a very talented author. She drew me into the storyline straight away and then I felt as though I was in a spin dryer, I cannot praise this book enough. The only thing was I was annoyed with myself for reading it so quickly.
A very worthy five stars, ten if I could so will have to stick with five. Well done Sue and can't wait for your next masterpiece.
I have to say when started to read this book I almost gave up and didn’t finish it. Books that portray woman as needy and inferior are just not what I enjoy to read about. I am so glad I continued with it! It was a little slow to the build up but halfway through I just could not wait to see how it all ended. Love how Marianne gets courageous and realizes all is not what it seems. Would definitely recommend this book...
I absolutely LOVED this book! It drew me in from the first few pages and never let me go. As we are drawn further and further into the storyline, you're in for a rollercoaster of a book. Without giving too much away, you see that everything is not as perfect in this marriage, this family, as everyone on the outside thinks. And you begin to question who is the sane one.
Our Little Lies is very well written book, with detailed and complicated characters. The storyline is intense and moves along quickly. I had a difficult time putting this book down.
*I would like to thank the author/publisher/Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.*
I was intrigued to read this book as the author has previously written in a very different genre ( comedy/woman’s )........this book proves she has many talents!
Marianne, poor Marianne has a fabulous life with her debonair Cardiac surgeon husband Simon....
Marianne also has an unseen shockingly scary life with her bullying manipulative monster husband Simon
Simon does as he wants, with who he wants and then accuses Marianne of ‘imagining everything’ and abuses her in every way for even daring to question him
Simon is scary, very scary and very believable, he made me angry whilst reading the book and his quiet evilness made me shudder ( fantastic character writing )
As the story evolves you find out why Marianne is so reluctant to stop him.....but then she snaps and with a real buzz ( for me ) confronts him about his latest affair at a party she is throwing....to say it is a wonderful scene is not exaggerating, I read it twice as Simons fury at her fighting back is so good ( he can do nothing either as surrounded by colleagues)
The book then changes direction and shocked me again and well delivers an ending that will make you go WOW but you need to read it to see why 😃
Straight into my Top 10 of the year and a really great read, dark, disturbing and just everything you want from a psychological thriller and more
I hope the author writes more in this genre, awesome book
10/10 5 stars
Marianne and Simon have a picture perfect life. Simon a distinguished heart surgeon and Marianne the stay at home wife in their perfect house, their daughter and twin sons. All perfect when you look in the windows but looking out it couldn’t be further from the truth. Marianne knew that Simon had some indiscretions in the past but when he mentions Caroline she knows this is different and Caroline has to go! How far will Marianne go to keep her husband.
What a read this was, reminiscent of BA Paris behind closed doors, with the twists of a Claire Macintosh book, this was such a good read and just as I thought I had worked it out I was wrong!
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Marianne appears to be SO happy. She is a stay-at-home mom, married to a cardiac surgeon and lives in a beautiful house. Married 10 years to Simon - but one morning her husband says - "Caroline". Caroline is a junior surgeon who works with Marianne's husband.
As the story continues, we find out that Marianne is sheltered, controlled and abused by her husband. She rarely is able to have coffee with her new best friend, Jen or attend any social events. "New", because Marianne's family has had to move three times. This, according to Simon, is all Marianne's fault. The reader soon learns the extent of Simon's meanness, cheating and abuse. Since Marianne has been on high doses of psychiatric drugs for years, she has allowed her husband to manipulate her to the point of her (almost total) submission.
But it is Caroline she is most worried about. Marianne reads e-mails about Simon and Caroline, stalks and even has lunch with Caroline. This, to plan a surprise party for Simon and her revenge on both of them. Marianne is obsessed with Caroline. When she discovers that Caroline is pregnant, Marianne pulls out all of the stops,
And, wouldn't you know- Caroline is murdered. Husband or wife or ???
Lots of suspense in this domestic thriller! Recommend!!!
Many Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a fine read!
If you are a fan of the book You, then this story is for you. Andi has a happy life in Cornwall with her husband and children, but her old friend from college, Camilla, is out to ruin all that. Once best friends, the two of them are now united only by the tragic events that occurred during their graduation party. Andi has pushed the incident to the back of her mind, but Camilla won’t let it stay there. A twisted tale of obsession and jealousy
Our Little Lies by Sue Watson is a psychological thriller that takes you on a roller coasters ride of lies, manipulation and paranoia.
Marianne is married to a successful heart surgeon and lives in a beautiful home with her husband and three children. She is unable to trust her husband and imagines that he is having an affair and is insanely jealous. Her husband Simon is very controlling and cruel to her and undermines her with the children.
At the start of the book I found Marianne to be a winger and very annoying but as the story unfolded I found myself to be in her corner and rooting for her character.
I enjoyed this book and read it in one day as I didn't want to put it down. I did not guess the twist until the end.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was super excited to learn that one of my favourite authors was mixing genres. Sue Watson has historically written VERY funny books that I am a huge fan of. To learn she was releasing a thriller made me kind of nervous..... Turns out I was worrying over nothing. So when I read the synopsis I admit I was surprised as it didn't sound that....you know...thrilling! Again turned out I was wrong and boy was I in for more than one surprise. First off Marianne is front and centre as the woman married to Simon who is a sucessful surgeon. They live in a beautiful house with beautiful children and as a woman who stays at home looking after her home and her children it seems she has the perfect life.
Well it becomes clear VERY quickly that she has nothing like the perfect life. In fact she has a weird, and horrendous life. The first few chapters made me feel strangely uncomfortable. Marianne seems like a woman who has it all but in fact is downtrodden and frankly living in any woman's worst nightmare. I think the reason this made me feel so uncomfortable is the reality of it. You read about stories like this, and people who behave in a certain way. However when it's news or something you see fleetingly you think no more of it. Reading the story literally made my skin crawl at times.
Caroline is a colleague of Simon's and one that Marianne soon becomes fixated on, however as the pages and chapters went by I began to feel all kinds of strange. Was Marianne a complete nut job, or was her husband. What was real and what was imagined? There were elements of this book I didn't like such as Marianne feeling too much of a victim BUT this book had a strange pull on me. It was weird, a little warped, most definitely a book that captures your imagination (in the worst way) and a book that I literally did not put down. I read it in two straight sittings and felt almost glad when it was all over (but in a good way). One huge brownie point for the ending. When I got to it, I was ready to start bitching about "what a ridiculous way to end it" and then she threw the curveball! Cracking end!
I have to say I was pretty blown away by this book. Coming from an author that can make me laugh like a 40 something child, the ability to produce something in this genre that is so gripping is a true testament to her skill. No it's not perfect, and there were elements I didn't like but DAMN...if this is her first in this genre...sign me up for all future thrillers. This was a cracking read and I think Sue Watson may well have just jumped ship from one genre to another with surprising ease. Roll on the next one!!!!
